The comics were just fanfic sequel to their tales,. That's literally what's implied in the comics themselves. The comics coming out first were just meant to give the Illusion that it's more connected even though the episode was written and IDW was just given a synopsis as a base.

Can't we just adopt the old Star Wars canon system of different tiers of canon and end this autistic back and forth once and for all?
A-Canon for animation
B-Canon for books
C-Canon for comics
M-Canon for miscellaneous merchandise like cards or toy blurbs

If something of higher canon references an element from lower canon, then that element gets elevated to the higher canon status, but only that element and not necessarily the entire story surrounding the element in question.

But they threw out all the previous to 50 comics in canon before their big push.

I mean, we know they did, Accord is the breaking point where nothing in it could possibly still be canon after the events depicted in the show, and then they doubled down with Royal Problem rendering the entirety of the Luna micro completely incompatible. They took the reigns post 50 and said "No more going off, you're supplementary material to the show now."

Even then they could just throw out these comics too, since the collaboration not providing the boost they wanted. The pre-50 are already dead and they could pull the life support on this one at any moment.

Their ideal is a kid watches today's episode, really likes Rockhoof/Mistmane/Flash Magnus, and finds a comic that directly references the episode and then tells another story. Supplementary material for people who wanted more.

Comics will be canon once the show reference the events that ORIGINATED in the comics. The closest we ever got to it was Confalone referencing the D&D game from comics.

It was the only instance where comics invented some content for the show lore.
