There was some discussioni n one of the previous threads about when she got her scar, since there was no mention of that in the book when her horn broke. Some speculated that it may have happened when she was fighting the hippogriffs, but apparently not because we can see that she already has it before she meets the Storm King in the comics.

The comics are fucking worthless when it comes to proper representation though, and the comicverse differ drastically from the show's canon on many core concept. It's a strange world where tie-in books are better researched and have more validity than the official comics.
It would make more sense that she'd have gotten it from the hippogriffs, as they kick her around quite a bit and have suitable claws and talons, but I guess the Ursa Minor could have done it as well when it swiped her. Strange that no one mentions it though.

I like her tied tail in #3 because her bits are exposed for all to see, but I do think the design we ended up with is ultimately the best one.
Eyepatch tied around her horn is a clever little detail, but again, I think the broken horn she ended up with is a more interesting concept.

The Stormy Road to Canterlot book is non-canon.

In that book, Storm King already has his staff when Tempest meets him.

In a scene from the movie, Storm King is unimpressed with the staff and upset with Tempest, while Tempest calls it "Sacanas" and claims it will work once she gets the princesses. Implying that she gave it to him.

Makes sense. Magic is quite malleable. Luna uses dream magic with her horn, while Celestia uses her wings when banishing Daybreaker. Zecora even creates a potion that indirectly channels Twilight's alicorn magic, etc.

Then again, there are lots of genuinely good animated (adventure) movies that have very lackluster plots but are carried by it's characters.

I'm honestly not sure how the timeline is meant to add up. Stormy Road indirectly refers to Luna raising the moon, and Tempest's journey taking place over months or at most a few years, and takes her through Appleloosa (which was built in less than a year before S1). She also appears to be living on her own.
So by those numbers, she would have had to lose her horn at most 3-4 years ago.

But she also wanted to apply for Celestia's school for gifted unicorns, which Twilight did before she got her cutie mark, and now there's this as well.

The timeline is really, really tight, but it COULD add up if stretch the years slightly more. Say she's a very late bloomer cutie-mark wise, but big bodied (Fluttershy is our precedent, young Tempest obviously just has a lot more muscle), she just grew up very independently like Scootaloo, and she's very, very young. CMC+5 years if you're really stretching, with the mane6 being mid to late 20's now due to the passage of years between S1 and now.

I'm still leaning more towards some inaccuracy somewhere, it seems more likely than Tempest the Child Soldier. Maybe they just want ro keep her cutie mark a secret for now.

While there are clear and obvious similarities in that both lost their friends and that was the initial driving force, there are some core differences. Only if you're overly reductionist like you can you make the argument they're the same. I mean, fuck, except for the first line that applies to every villain that's been reformed.

I think the most important distinction to make between the two is this:
Starlight felt betrayed by The System, and created her own system that incidentally has her sitting at the top.
Tempest felt betrayed by The Community, and traveled until she found another that accepted her without drawing attention to her crippled horn.

Basically, Starlight built an ideology and had to be convinced her ideology is flawed, while Tempest has fallen in with a bad crowd and has to be convinced raping & pillaging is bad. Unlike Starlight, Tempest doesn't really have an endgame, her only "ideology" is every pony for themselves.

It's because the "edgelord supreme" was just a forced meme.
In reality, her "dark" color scheme is on par with many background pony (even identical to Fizzypop, a blindbag pony).
Her broken horn is nothing out of the ordinary, and we've seen characters with crippling injuries many times before.
etc. etc.

Only if you're coming straight from G3 or something could you make the argument she's edgy, she's very much in line with G4, for a G4 villain she's actually pretty tame. She doesn't even seem to have an evil laugh.
