Is it just me, or does the inscribing compass (the drawing tool, not the navigation one) and to a lesser degree the ink bottle look really, really flat in this image?

Like, for the compass: If it's laying flat on the map, we ought to be able to see its side, but we don't: We see the "top", which seems to indicate it's standing upright. If that's so, there's no depth relative to the map behind it. It literally looks like a 2d sprite that was slapped on without any thought.

Yeah, that's what it is. They built a 3D background and then just pasted 2D animation items in on top of it.

The map and ponies are at a different angle than the background makes the floor to be, and the objects on the map have even less depth.

This is going to be the thing that ruins the movie for me... I can't look at anything else. I get too distracted by the horrible, cataracts-esque translucent eye shines. Spike's is by FAR the worst for some reason but the others are still bad. Their eyes all look dried out and glazed over. IRL, matte finish things produce shines like these (translucent, blurred on the ege). Wet, shiny things otoh make hard-edged, near-opaque white shines. This is like babby's first flash project shines. (I know it's not flash).

I'm sure that was a committee decision to make them translucent ("so you can see more of their pretty colored irises") because the art director HAS to realize how much worse that looks than solid white. I'm at work now but when I get home I'll edit some of them to be solid white and you'll see how much less uncanny valley they look. (Or some anon do it for me pls)

One of the main reasons she looks "empty" is the fucking eyes. Look at this. The left pic is the official image. The shaded pupil and translucent eye sheen literally make her look like she has dead eyes like a dolls eyes...... By making the shines/sheens solid white (with a bluish outer glow since that's what they have in the official art, just worse) and darkening the pupils by 65%, I think it looks significantly better. (I found solid black pupils and no outer glow on the shines looked out of place because the rest of the art is shaded.)

My modification is not perfect but i'd say the eyes look quite a bit better. They "pop" better. I think that's a big problem with a lot of the movie art. Not enough contrast. All the "lighting" which is just ToonBoom's built-in shading makes everything kind of blended together and doesn't have nearly the same punch as the sharp lines and contrast from the show.
