All of the people saying "Glimmer repeatedly fucks up and is forgiven" get it from Glimmer's impulsive decisions from which she is free of consequence.

Twilight is not characterized by impulsive, rash decisions. She is characterized by careful checklists that she triple-checks. Glimmer is characterized by impulsiveness, and Glimmerhaters evince this with their hate of how Glimmer is always forgiven every time she impulsively fucks up.

Saying that the borderline-OCD triple-check checklist pony is characterized by impulsive decisions that fuck things up for which she is always forgiven is just grasping at straws.

Starlight's reformation was well-handled as a continuation of her character. They are the same character.

Starlight had been a villain for years, fanatic in her social philosophy. When she reformed, she regressed 5-10 years in age, because she had to discard all of the maturation she had undergone as a cult leader. She then had to learn and grow and deal with her inherent flaws and habits, namely borderline psychopathic disregard for others whom she instead treats as pawns to control as a means to an end (c.f. mind-controlling others repeatedly and not even being able to figure out why it was wrong). But she has steadily learned and grown in spite of her innately awry moral compass to mature past much of that and make friends, but realistically still struggles with the residues not of her villainy but the personality flaws that led to it.
