Twilight actually developed as a character, the MAIN character for 3 seasons before she got her wings, and even then it didn't change her all that much.
Starlight is a complete psycho gone good who's only real character traits are 'muh past' and 'but im good now tho lol' and also 'i like kites'.
She has done sweet fuck all compared to twilight to earn the right to be a ruler of equestria. What would she even rule over? redemption? Let her stay the way she is, for what it's worth I like her as she is now, but only if i forget about her past transgressions. If they ruin that by making her an alicorn I will quite literally hunt Jim down and fucking shoot him.

So my take on what to do with Glimmer is, the best and only way to salvage the situation the writers have made for themselves is to get glimmer to reinvigorate her friendship bond with Sunburst and make their relationship more important than a mere side addition. I feel this is crucial, and that once their relationship is reinvigorated, Starlight needs to take up residence with Sunburst in Canterlot and perhaps take up some form of royal magical duties of high or great importance, like a high mage position or something.

Her place of importance is secured, she's away from the Mane 6, and mostly everybody is happy.

Of course, the idea can be fleshed out and refined, but that's my take on it.

"A couple" doesn't necessarily mean "a pair". I liked 5 or 6 episodes in S6, for example.
As for my waifu, you're technically right, but it's more difficult than that. I have to be in the fandom to consume new art of her, to read new stories, I need to see how she's treated in the show and what she is up to. I can't simply not care, because the day I stop caring is the day I stop loving her.
And besides, hanging out on /mlp/ is fun sometimes, too, and I enjoy some of the things the fandom puts out. Might as well spend 20 minutes of my time watching a cartoon on Saturday, even if I get bored and lose focus during it.
