Why are the CMC written so much better than the mane 6?

I'd think it would be the other way around. Sure, there is a bit more leeway with how bad their behavior can be, but because of that, it is far easier to fall into the trap of writing children as complete dumb/obnoxious (staremaster is a good example of this). In later seasons, the CMC really aren't written obnoxiously at all and are even less obnoxious than some of the mane 6 (dash/AJ/rarara/pinkie).
