I'm catching up on MLP after a two year hiatus and just got to the episode where Thorax was introduced. I like the character but I really wish they spread it out over two episodes or ended on him saving Spike a second time then running again. I mean friendship is serious business in Equestria I know but Spike trusted him waaaaay too easily. I would have like to have seen him doubt his feelings for Thorax and question whether he was being manipulated, maybe after consulting with Shining Armor who shouldn't have been three brief cameos in that episode. The song and dance number was unnecessary but could still work I guess with the scenerio above.

Still got a shit ton of episodes to get through to get fully caught up but I will say is this knowing whats coming.

They tried that in the comics, I think the result would be the same on the show. Petrification maybe a long term solution which wouldn't kill Chrysalis and would remove her as a threat... but as Discord has shown its not an eternal solution and I doubt the Queen really cares what era she finds herself.

Shes been around since before Sombra, Tirak, Starswirl and maybe even before Celestia or Luna (but not Discord since hes eternal), shes weathered countless catastrophes that befell Equestria and survived along with her brood. If she were to die I highly suspect it'd be for the reason above: rejecting redemption, and probably out of spite. Lets face it though Hasbro won't go that route either cause its too dark for the actual target audience (ironically though not too dark for Disney)

I kind of feel like the "purification" route seems most likely, since I feel like Hasbro might see an opportunity to sell her new form as a toy (like they did with Twicorn), and she's too prominent to just forget about.

Anything but redemption, I am fucking sick of the show solving all its problems with the power of love. Love doesn't conquer all and not everybody wants or deserves to be redeemed. I mean Sombra was killed and even if he lived he probably would have scoffed at the idea of redemption.

Mind you I don't find killing her acceptable either since shes the closest thing on the show to a polar opposite to what the heros represent and stand for. Kill her or redeem her it leaves a vacuum which must be filled with something equally terrible or if shes redeemed moreso since that new enemy would have to be able to overpower her. It can be done but its fucking lame like with Tirek sapping an omnipotent being of his power and yet not becoming omnipotent himself. That is like an ant taking down an elephant, its fucking dumb.

Exhile or some sort of banishment from Equestria, it leaves the threat but diminishes it enough that the show can go on and it doesn't require fucking DBZ levels of power escalation to keep the narrative going which is where it will go if they redeem or kill her.

I'm certain it'll go this way, even if they writers do go ahead and fucking kill/reform her in the end. They'd make her wander the world all sad and lonely, and whatnot.

I wonder if the writers might try to expand outwards and dig into the origin of her evil (aside from being a bitch). The fact that all the changelings turned into gay moose shows thay they were freed from some kind of curse/blight, a blight they were liberated of once they lost connection with their Queen. Since Chrysalis appears physically decayed, the writers might go down the path and say that she acquired her corruption from an outside source, and it festered in her body for hundreds of years.
My prediction is after letting her wander around the revealing some crap about her and/or her race in a few flashbacks, the writers will then either let her die from some kind of illness/curse, or fucking tie-dye her. Then, if they're creative, they might expand on whatever kind of blight was supposed to infect her and maybe even chase that as "the source of evil". It wouldn't be unprecedented (see, even if it is fucking gay way to dispose of a perfect villain.

I seriously doubt anything good can come of more changeling episodes at this point. The core problem is that they're building on the rotten, nonsensical reformation the bugs got in the S6 finale.

You can't 'share love.' Love is not a commodity, it's an emotion you feel in relation to other things or people. Changelings may collect other ponies' love to feed, but the idea that they don't 'share' it with each other, and that this is the only thing holding them back from being 'good,' is nonsensical and ridiculous. They might as well have had Glimmer blast them with a generic magical spell to transform them into different creatures entirely.

It's so flimsy and shallow a resolution that it basically means Chrysalis and the changelings have no reason to exist other than anger/stupidity. They could transform themselves good at any moment with just a dash of self-reflection and therefore they can't really exist as bad guys anymore and are doomed to be transformed into rainbowdeer. Pharynx might be cool but I seriously doubt he can escape the reformation ray for more than a few minutes of screentime.

And of course the writers haven't backtracked on 'King' Thorax, who is now written to be a weak homosexual stereotype (all that's missing is a lisp). He has absolutely no right or reason to lead the nubugs but remains their impotent monarch essentially by writers' fiat. What an incredible waste of a character; it's like he exists only to be the useless foil to Chrysalis' cunning and competency.

Well I just got to the season six finale and this was my reaction

What the fuck was that? WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!

So Thorax giving all his love turned him into a nubug... okay. Lame but okay. But the other changlings doing the same thing WITHOUT HESITATION! What happened to their instincts? You know those same instincts which directed them to protect the queen when the hive was invaded, or the ones which made Thorax revert to his real self when in front of Flurryheart?

Thorax is an aboration, he was born different from the others so I could see him doing it but for the other Changlings i'd expect the decision to be being given the choice to do nothing or to slit their own wrists!

Love is their lifeblood, and sucking it up to survive is literally part of their very being. I'd expect the decision to give up love to be like deciding to amputate a limb or slice open ones stomach.

That 'finale' almost pissed me off as much as when Twilight became an Alicorn for something Starlight Glimmer did but got no recognition at all.

I'm done catching up for the night, I don't think I'd be able to take the clusterfuck todays episode was supposed to be not that I'd get to it for about six hours anyway.

Hes supposed to be a demi-god, someone so powerful that it took the elements of harmony to stop him. Hes a joke, you don't even need the elements anymore to beat him as apparently chaos magic is no different than pony magic. Just cast an anti-magic bubble or something and problem solved.

The whole cornering him with Fluttershy was what I was expecting, they didn't need to take away his magic to do it though or if they did they could have at least linked it to his feelings for Fluttershy saying it made him vunderable or something.

Welcome to the club senpai. I don't think any other episode has enraged me more than that one.

It really is baffling to me why the ending was written that way. I guess it was the only way they could think of to wrap the episode up as quickly as possible, but the decision to let Chrysalis go is really weird. I don't think the writers are thinking that far ahead that they wanted to keep using her as a recurring villain, so it's just strange that they let her go at the end, even though she's basically the only reason why the changelings are dangerous at all. IMO the easiest way to fix the ending would make the resolution that "love freely given" reforms the changelings, but in that case cheeselegs is the one that gets reformed first when Thorax surrenders his love to her.

I dunno, the whole changeling situation post-finale is a dumpster fire. I could think of a half dozen ways to write the episode better, to say nothing of their terrible new designs.

Just had a dumb idea for another way the changelings could have been reformed, taking advantage of another thing the writers forgot - the fact that Thorax created his own 'ponysona' of sorts.

Maybe during the finale Thorax could have revealed that under Chrysalis, no changeling is allowed to create their own disguise - they are only allowed to impersonate other ponies. Then during the episode climax, while cheeselegs is monologuing about taking over the world, Thorax and company tempt the other drones away with the promise that they can be creative and invent their own characters, to live and be loved by ponies without scaring the shit out of them. The drones all end up disobeying Chrysalis en masse, leaving her alone in the hive. Episode ends with changelings transforming into all manner of crazy OC characters and running around Ponyville meeting everyone.

No transformation needed, episode is resolved in a sensible way without obliterating a race, and has a resolution that fans would probably enjoy (everyone has an OC, right?).

Fuck the skittle commercial Changelings, she's the only one who matters at this point, and the only things they can do with her is permanently remove her (King Sombra style explosion or hell jail) or also fucking her design up. I'm almost certain she's going to be Starlight Glimmers final boss, which worries me that she's also going to be Starlight's "ultimate friendship lesson" point.
I'd honestly prefer death, but I don't think the odds are very high.

I had always assumed that any 'return of the changelings' episode would star Twilight or one of the princesses, since they have the most beef with Chrysalis. Well NOPE, the whole thing was a Glimmer episode and now she's enemy number one. Ever since S6 I assumed that Flurry Heart would also feature heavily in a changeling episode. After all, she's the daughter of Chrysalis' greatest enemy, and changelings were creatures known for stealing children in medieval lore. Well NOPE, Flurry is kidnapped along with the entire pony royal family and almost never mentioned in all of the finale.

If they do make Chrysalis a final boss for Glimmer, one that ends with reform, I think that will finally be enough to get me off the ride. Throwing old characters under the bus for the sake of new ones really rubs me the wrong way.

Honestly, I have no idea.

She won't die, since this is a Hasbro show and the only villain to die is Sombra, and he's as much of a non-entity as Sauron, maybe moreso.

She won't decided to become a sparkledeer after a speech about friendship because, well, if they wanted /that/, why did they have her reject it in the first place? Besides, it would make her character arc more-or-less a copy of Glim Glue Glam Glom.

She won't turn into Team Rocket since the show doesn't really do recurring villains. The comic, maybe, but the comic is noncanon shit anyway.

She won't get turned to stone since again, reusing villain defeat methods isn't really something the show does. Luna got her anger magically excised from her, Discord got turned to stone, Chrysalis V1 got blown away all the way to the Badlands by a Huey Lewis song, Sombra is fucking dead, Glim Glam Thank You Ma'am was ousted by a popular revolt and later got diplomanced, and Chrysalis V2 had to watch as her whole family got turned to a mockery of her race and ran away after a pony imperialist who knew nothing about changelings, their history, or their culture lectured her.

The most likely option is that she'll just be forgotten about by the creators and never seen again. The best option is that she'll get a Vegeta style redemption and she'll technically be a good guy but still hate everyone.

But who knows! Maybe she'll beat the heroes, get her hive back, and learn how to be sort of not evil I guess along the way.

TLDR
Radiance controlled all bugs in a hive mind before the king was born from a giant dragon wyrm and gave bugs the gift of SOUL and used that to seal her away and construct a large kingdom but radiance got pissed about being forgotten and unleashed a plague with the help of moth cultists that brought bugs back under 'her' control.
King dug deep and discovered VOID, which is essentially primordial ooze that can become anything, he uses this with SOUL to make a bunch of mechanisms and automatons in an effort to cure / stop / contain the plague which culminates in his hollow knights.
Each one has no identity of their own, so theres nothing for radience to corrupt. They all have their mission carved on the inside of their masks to give them purpose and their first task is to climb out of the pit they're born in.
The player character is the second to climb out, and for unexplaimed reasons is, for unknown reasons, outside of hollownest years after it was sealed and the game starts.

The plague was strong enough to control his body directly. Dont forget that in the final fight, despite the state he's in, he's STILL trying to help you by stabbing himself over and over. He just didnt have the same connection to the void that you did, nor the power to attack radience directly in the dream realm. Honestly he's not unnaturally big, a lot of other bosses and even NPC's are about the same size or bigger. One of the things I like about the characters being bugs, you really don't have many limits with their designs so they went all out in making all of them look unique yet simple.

I had been running. World after unsuitable world I crossed holding my breath and shielding my face through toxic winds, blazing heat, and bitter cold. I had encountered strings of bad worlds before but never like this. I had been running so long. I had struggled so hard to keep going even as I felt the magic draining from my body. But it had been worth it.

I now stood in a vast field of tall grass.The full moon lined the distant horizon in silver light and illuminated the ghostly outline of my breath in the cool autumn air. And standing no more than a hundred yards away was my love. My queen. Even at a distance I could see her cool playful smile. I chuckled slightly remembering how I had teased her before we were truly acquainted and wondered if I was due a round of taunting.

I began to move toward her and she called out “Where are you?”. I smiled and replied, “I'm right here”. Her expression turned to worry as she called out again, “Where did you go? Don't leave me!” I began to run as the urgency in her voice drove me. “I'm here! I'm right here!”

The howl of the wind filled my ears and the image vanished but the call came once again. “Where are you? Please answer!”

My heart jumped and I opened my eyes to blasting wind and sand. Shielding my face as best I could I slowly pushed my aching body up and got to my feet.

“Help me! Please anyone!”

Instinct guided me while my mind was still a blur. I stumbled blindly toward the cries for help just struggling to keep one foot in front of the other against the wind. I didn’t know what I was expecting or what I was planning on doing when I reached whoever it was. I was only focused on getting there.

Each step met the shifting sand with my full weight while I worked to pull my other foot free from desert’s grasp. My next step failed to find solid ground before I could react. Sharp rocks clawed at me down the shallow slope until I came to a harsh stop at the bottom greeted by a frightened squeal.

“V-Vis?! Is that you?”

I gave a pained groan in response before answering, “No”. In the dim light I could make out some movement. A shape moved over me and a light reached out from the top of the obscured form. In that moment of fleeting light I saw a face. It was a changeling. She screamed and shuffled back. Fearing she would disappear into the murky backdrop of the storm I reached out and grabbed her leg.

She cried out as she kicked wildly at me. Not knowing what else to do I quickly got to my hands and knees and crawled over to restrain the struggling creature.

“Stop! Stop fighting me! I’m not going to hurt you!”, I shouted over the roar of the wind.

“NO!” she cried back, “Let me go! Let me go, monster!”

I managed to get my weight over her and restrain her. Leaning closer I repeated firmly, “I’m not going to hurt you. My name is Anon. Where is the hive?”

She looked up at me and I could see it coming. Panic erupted from her. She screamed and struggled to get free.

A sharp kick just below the ribs knocked when wind out ot me. I gasped and struggled for breath as she squirmed away and began running with a noticeable limp.

I managed to get to my feet just as she vanished into the storm; her tracks eroding behind her. Still trying to catch my breath I moved in the direction she ran. Even with the way she was limping I knew I stood little chance of catching up to her in this storm. But I didn't know what else to do.

The vague imprints left in the sand soon diminished into nothing and again I was alone and hopelessly lost.

“Lene!” A distant call echoed through the wind. It was so faint that I couldn't be sure of the direction it came from.

“Vis?!” A much closer call came. One that I could follow.

“Lene! Where are you?!”

“Vis! I'm here! I'm coming!”

The two continued their exchange drawing me in close behind Lene. Little by little her tracks returned.

“Vis?! Vis?! I'm almost there!” Lene yelled out to no reply.

What light there was grew dimmer yet and the wind kept at my back. I was certain we were approaching something. Some kind of shelter.

The sand parted at the base of a sheer rock face. The wind blowing along the wall made it impossible to look in either direction. I felt along the rock surface hoping I hadn't overshot where I had last heard the calls from.

The wall edged back under an overhang then gave way entirely to a wide opening. It was dark but with what little light shone in I could make out three shapes huddled together. Three changelings staring back at me in terror.

I didn't even get a word out before I was struck in the side of the head. The blow was hard enough to topple me into the dirt. I groaned, my head spinning from the impact. I struggled to stay conscious but my senses began to slip away. As the darkness closed in around me I saw something massive loom over me.

I woke slowly feeling the warmth of the sun against the side of my face and the dry wind rushing over me. I felt my form dangling; suspended from under my arms.

As I lifted my chin from my chest and lazily opened my eyes I saw the world rushing by in a blur of sand and stone far below. Nervous tension filled me. Fear struggled to take my groggy mind driving shuttering electricity up my spine.

The instinct to struggle revealed to me that my arms were pinned by hard unyielding chitten. My eyes drifted up to the hulking black monstrosity that had me in its grip. It was only then that the deep rumble of it's wings dawned on me being as deep and loud as to be felt as much as heard.

Even in my dazed state I could see the familiarity in this creature. The impossible reality that this enormous beast was a changeling.

My eyes fell forward and fear finally took hold. In the amber glow of evenings light, standing in defiance of the low horizon a black tower reached to the sky. It was easily twice the height of the Crystal Empire and spread just as wide.

A second roar of monstrous wings drew my attention left, away from the setting sun. From the side I could have no doubt that as twisted and massive as these creatures were, they were indeed changelings.

Held pinned to its chest under its forelegs were the three changelings I had only caught a glimpse of before I was knocked unconscious. Two males faced each other, their expressions angry arguing in shouts that could not overcome the sound of our captors. As if sensing my gaze the female looked up with tear soaked eyes. She opened her mouth as if to speak when they suddenly shot away and I felt myself thrown to one side by an abrupt change in course.

I had barely regained my senses when I saw them again passing just below as we circled the black tower in opposite directions. Again and again they passed above and below as we gained altitude.

As we rose higher I could see the endless barren wasteland reach out to the horizon in every direction. This land was bleak and dead and in the middle of it stood the manifestation of sorrow and mourning.

Near the top I spotted only a few changelings working on the uneven surface of the tower, repairing damage of the storm that had first greeted my arrival to this world. One stopped for a moment and for that instant I saw defeat in his eyes.

My focus was again pulled away by a sudden shift in direction. My body was thrown up against the great beast that carried me as we rushed toward the ground. I can't recall if I screamed. I'm not even sure if I was capable of it at the time. The ground came at us and in an instant parted as we entered a tunnel just big enough for us to fit with little margin for error.

Throughout the cavern changelings numbering in the hundreds toiled by torchlight under watchful gaze of of beasts not unlike the one that carried me. Most seemed to keep to their work while a few turned a curious eye upward as we passed. Looking to me with the same broken resolve as the one at the top of the tower.

My head became heavy and my vision began to fade. My mind and body had endured all they could. The looking sense of danger was the last thing I was aware of as sounds grew muffled and distant. Then there was again only blackness.

Interesting premise, but format you use (Character:"Dialogue") is not a good choice in my opinion. Half of the story it was obvious who was talking, other half would be obvious with a single line of "Applebloom agreed begrudgingly" or "said Sweetie Belle". It makes for more vivid and enjoyable read.

The corridor was dark and seemingly endless. I was unsure as to how I came to be there or where I was trying to go. All I knew is that I had to keep moving.

The passage snaked back and forth at times seeming as though it might intersect with itself but the walls remained solid and constant, broken only by the occasional locked door. I had long since stopped checking them.

The monotonous sound of my own footfalls echoed away and back again. Each step became a hammer blow to my skull. I couldn't stop. I had to keep going but if I continued I was sure to go mad before I reached… wherever it was that I was going.

I slowed after a time. I began to question my motives. Why couldn't I stop? Why couldn't I just stop and rest a while?

The thrumming in my head pushed its way to the front of my mind. The unbearable drumming of my feet against the stone floor. I couldn't take it anymore. I curled my lips and growled a curse in defiance of my own mission.

I let one foot fall next to the other and I stopped. It was so wrong and yet it felt so good.

The silence was exquisite. Suddenly I could hear the sound of my own breathing. I could head low pulsing of my heart. And then I heard the whispers. Distant yet familiar, I recognized them as the ghostly voices of the Crystal Empire. The voices that had spoken to me all those months ago.

I listened carefully trying to make out what they were saying. I tried so hard to hear them but another sound drown them out. The sound of my footsteps.

I looked down to see my feet were still stationary but the sound continued. Again and again it beat through my head. It was so loud I could feel it in my chest.

Through the noise I could still hear them though. The whispers beckoning me forward with promises of relief from the endless drumming.

I ran. I ran forward in a desperate attempt to escape it all. Where was I? What was I doing? Where was I trying to go? These questions filtered through my breaking mind. I felt I was about to either snap or die. Clutching my head I screamed and then there was silence.

Slowly and cautiously I brought my arms down and looked around. I was now someplace different yet similar. It was the same stone wall and floor but the corridor had become a large open room lined on each side by stone pillars.

The whispers returned sounding much closer now. I looked around trying to find their source but it seemed to move from place to place.

“What do you want?” I shouted. “Why am I here?”

The whispers receded behind one of the pillars and from the other side stepped a pony. One I knew but only fleetingly.

“L-Luna?” I said recognizing her face.

Although familiar she was different somehow. Older… Ancient even. Her coat was pale; pulled tight over visible bones. And her mane hung to one side limp and lifeless.

She looked at to me and even with her eyes shut tight she seemed to look through me. It was as if we were in the same room but not in the same world.

“Y-you’re not Luna… are you.” I said more as a statement than a question.

Slowly… reluctantly her eyes opened showing featureless glowing orbs. Her mouth opened but didn't move to speak. The whispers flowed out from inside her.

“I don't understand.” I said in reply. “What am I supposed to do?”

She walked to a door that hadn't previously been there. It opened before her to a brightness that enveloped her as she walked through and I followed.

As my eyes adjusted I found that Luna had vanished as did the door behind me. I stood in room ringed with pillars. Wrapped around each one was one or more bright luminescent chains. From the pillars they all reached inward toward a point where their combined light was too bright to look at.

The thing in the middle of the room moved again; not violently but just enough to rattle its chains.

An uneasiness came over me quickly growing toward fear. I stepped back and instinctively reached back to find a pillar. My hand brushed one of the chains and from the point of contact the light of the chain faded and went dark.

One by one blackness crept across each link as it expanded toward the center. The light began to fade. Darkness fell. I heard the chains pull tight then snap. I opened my mouth to scream but it was too late. A great darkness rushed over me.

I think part of it is her character design. I can't recall who designed her but it WASN'T Lauren Faust. One of the other character designers on the show. I think she's a big horror manga fan and the character design was influenced by... dammit, I can't recall her name. There's a woman in Japan who draws horror manga in a creepy/cute style, and lots of the mutated creatures she draws have holes in their limbs. And the manga artist is a big H.R. Giger fan, which shows in some of her work.

Anyway, the original script supposedly just described Chrysalis as "a tall, lanky unicorn with a crooked horn" and left it to the art staff to work it out from there.

A lot of the character designs on the show are cute, but not many are beautiful. Celestia and Luna are beautiful. Chrysalis is beautiful, even with her ratty-looking mane and tail and the holes in her limbs and wings. And really that's about it.

Kathleen Barr's voice acting for Queen Chrysalis drips sex appeal, too. That's part of it for me. She voices Trixie also.

Rebecca Dart designed her, and I agree that she really does look beautiful.

I mention her episode reveal because I was watching it on stream with everyone else back in 2012, when the board was still young. At first everyone was skeptical because the episode premise was just a ripoff of the UK's recent royal wedding, and they essentially invented Cadance and Shining out of nowhere for it.

By the time the end of part one was over everyone was freaking about about evil Cadance. Then out of fucking nowhere, with no spoilers at all, comes this sexy bug villain and her army of minions, a bunch of fight scenes, and one of the best songs on the show. It was hands down the most fun FiM stream I've watched, and probably the most positive that /mlp/ has ever been after an episode.

Except maybe note it as a very minor criticism, "your language could be easier to follow if you're writing a fanfic rather than poetry", I guess.

I dunno about clumsy nerd girls, but her main traits are roleplaying/impersonating others and scheming about controlling the world. Chrysalis would make an excellent DM, and if the show wasn't just for little girls I could easily imagine an episode where she confesses her love of Ogres and Oubliettes or some other tabletop game.
