They screwed the pooch on this due to the first movie.
When they introduced Sci-twi they realized it was going to be an ongoing series, and took time to think about how they could make her different and distinct, and how her role would need to be different with 7 characters instead of 6 (sunset being there)

With the other 5, you can just tell how they slapped them off in a half assed manner and never thought this series would go on.

Well, think about it this way: Say you found a portal to an alien world full of sapient squid and found out they have domesticated and subjugated our primate cousins, the great apes (chimpanzees, gorrillas, orangutans, etc). Would you be outraged at the way they treat them or would you not care one way or the other because they are "not muh species"?

Real life non-sapient horses are to Equestrian ponies what the other ape species are to us.
