Ponyville's criticisms were valid from a story perspective, but from the characters perspective, that's just the way the world works. Sometimes ponies like fluttershy don't change on a dime the first time they learn a lesson. The clash of the idealized story with the "real life" characters = comedy. If you didn't know anything about the fandom, and this was your 20th episode, and just took the jokes at face value, you'd laugh.

Why would it have weight? You're probably basing it on the fact that some initial laws of physics and stuff like that are agreed on by many people and that's why they have weight.

But in reality, laws of physics and other objective truths have weight because they can be proven without bringing in subjective stuff. A majority agreeing with them is not the reason they are true, it's the result.

Fiction products are different. They are a product of one's mind, therefore, their quality can't be proven objectively without bringing in one's opinion. Therefore, there is no reason for the majority's opinion to have any actual weight.
