I don't think there's really much we can do for them before leaving. We only have about 10 days, or is it 9 now?, to travel on foot down a tall ass mountain, and then to some nearby settlement, and then find some way to convince someone in whatever settlement we reach to travel to canterlot and risk their lives to help some random ponies they don't know.
If we don't manage to get gud at transforming, we might also have to convince them we aren't a bad changeling too, if they don't shoot us first.
