They were on a really tight budget when they designed the original characters, Lauren wanted to have more varied body types but they couldn't afford it. Once FiM became super successful they started introducing a lot more body shapes and size, but they couldn't go back and change the Mane 6 for example because fans would get mad. It looks like for the movie they have *very* slightly different proportions, and alicorn twilight is taller... but overall yeah I agree with you it would have been cooler to have more variation/distinctiveness.

Some fluff for pegasi, some more classical, unicorn tails, on average more slender unicorn bodies (a little more in the direction of Fleur and Sassy), make the earth ponies more thicc, and acknowledge the alicorns' marecocks.
