I assume, that Spike is doing old chivalry shit in front of Rarity.
- It was shown twice at least, that Spike dreams himself as a knight in shining armor, trying to save a damsel in distress.
- That would be safe assumption that during his upbringing in Canterlot he would dwell into tales featuring chivalry.
- He obviously was fascinated with it, as he would few times show his bravado.

Rarity is the closest to "a lady" with nearly everything.

Well it makes sense really. Twilight was a complete shut in without friends back in Canterlot so it makes sense that Spike wouldn't have had many friends or even socialized with many ponies, let alone mares, on a regular basis. So he gets to Ponyville and sees an above average mare and he falls for her. We know that Rarity is considered an attractive mare based on the show and we've seen Spike ooze over her good traits while ignoring her worse ones so it's most likely that Spike simply has a very idealized perception of Rarity and, like most crushes, is infatuated with her to the point of blindness in objectively rating her compared to other mares. I mean everyone can probably relate to seeing someone they know crush over someone and completely fall for them; sweeping their bad traits under the rug and ignoring everyone else. Spike's like that. The only real problem with the crush is that it's gone on for so long at this point. Either stop mentioning it or specifically address Spike getting over it.

MA Larson was such a fucking tool for writing an episode centered around the stupid Sparity gag.
