It's based on mundane modern day Earth with one of the most boring and overused settings: high school.

EqG is boring because it's attached to FiM. As such it can't deviate much and also is constrained by the same rules set as FiM. Little to no violence, action must be mild so little girls can keep up with it, status quo must be maintained etc. It was supposed to be a one-time thing anyway. It's not viable and the staff has stopped even trying to explain where all the magic is coming from because they've written themselves in a corner.
The only way for EqG to really move forward is to build it's own identity. Become it's own thing.
If it were up to me, I'd make EqG a little more intense in the pacing, have a more active camera with more angles, and up the level of violence to TFA levels. Family friendly but not boring. I'd keep the show light-hearted, but I'd also make it a savage parody of the highschool, teen hero and magical girl genres like Megas did with anime.

Nah, no reason. They don't need to do anything more than an occasional comic or whatnot, they can easily just flash a new costume every so often and sell action toys without having any "actual" action. fans have shown they'll fill in the blanks themselves.
Like look at the movie; the mane six will probably dress up in their pirate outfits when they're on the Pirate's ship, but won't have anything past that (and tempest won't get a jet fighter), but it'll still sell just by association with "normal" MLP.
