I think he even made a blog clarifying his meaning that basically adds up to what you said. Just because it's a show for little girls, doesn't mean they don't put effort in what they're making.

And say what you will about the writing of the show which can vary widely, but the attention to detail in the animation, the visual gags, and the overall quality of movement and cinematography has remained consistent and has even improved as the show has continued.
And at the end of the day that's all he can control. He can throw out ideas, but he has no power to force his ideas on the writers.
