Recall that they both teleported to and from the big hive, so we really have no context for how far away. Still, I doubt the bugs teleported away the protags when they abducted them, so it must still be somewhat close, since they only had about as much time as a trip to Starlight's village and back requires.

One of the reasons I think people disregard the map for sweeping epics\ fanfics is because it makes the world seem so small. Like, even if this is just Equestria, I'm still only counting, like, 14-16 settlements.

I don't know, I haven't seen any of the previews for the next comics. But Storm King's map looks nothing at all like this, so IDW definitely got very few details about the movie.
