Well, in that scene that was shown at comicon, Storm King literally threatens to maim Tempest if she fails, in a serious tone of voice.

Storm Creatures will probably be shown fucking shit up, maybe even flashbacks of the stuff from the "prequels".

Also Tempest can fire unfocused magic from her horn that just burns everything the fuck down. Not to mention her physical combat skills. She's probably going to kick some major ass on screen.

I find it unexpected because MLP the tv show targets a very young audience, younger than what most people seem to realize. It's common knowledge at this point that Megan wasn't allowed to show Twilight punching Tirek, but did you notice how whenever two characters who aren't married are about to kiss on the lips the get interrupted, or the camera cuts away at the last second? That's something they're allowed to show in Disney Princess movies, but they can't on MLP.

Looking at October 6th, there's not much for kids coming out on that same day. We have Blade Runner 2049, The Mountain Between Us, and The Florida Project. The second is a romance/disaster film and the third is an independent film, so MLP and Blade Runner will essentially be the big names that opening weekend.

However, we'll also have The Lego Ninjago Movie still in theaters around that time. So part of the MLP Movie's success will be contingent on whether kids get burned out from Lego by the time MLP opens. Those will be the only two animated, made-specifically-for-kids films throughout October.

I've seen more than one cinemaphile go on a heated rant about how the PG rating has become absolutely worthless as even the hint of violence or death earns it these days, and films Like Lion King that once got a G would now get a PG. You have to be aimed at preschoolers now for a G, which is a worthless category for theater release. They also like to rant about PG-13 ruining the R rating, but that doesn't really apply here.
