"Mostly good timing." Joyride says with a grin, "She was up by the ocean trading when she came across a mayor of a city having negotiations with a merpony chieftan. Some sort of dispute between harvesting rights and the such. The whole thing seemed like it was going to come to blows, but she managed to talk them down by suggesting a mutual beneficial trade agreement. Something along the lines of harvesting the seaweed or whatever it was and trading it for things on land that the seaponies couldn't get."

Borba nods, and Joyride sits down next to the giraffe and continues, "Unfortunately one of the merchant families had been using the disagreements to try and force the merponies away, and when he learned that the agreement the mayor and the merponies made would cost him money he tried to get rid of them himself. Borba and some of the townspeople stepped up, won, and now Borba has become an honorary member of their tribe."

Joyride grins again and pats the statue she brought out of storage.

Emerald asks Joyride if she was there for all this.

"Nah, Borba explained it to me some time ago. Took forever too." Joyride says sighing up at the giraffe, who gives an apologetic smile.

Emerald asks if she has met anyone famous like royalty or anything.

The giraffe shakes her head, and Joyride says, "Most people don't like or trust giants enough to let them close to their royalty. Suits her just fine though. She has ins with a bunch of castle clerks though, I'm sure.

"That would have been cool if you had met like, Celestia and stuff." Ruby says, a little disappointed.

"She's never been to Equestria, as far as I know." Joyride says, looking up to the giraffe, who nods.

Emerald asks what she sells.

"She a fan of trade goods. Uncommon spices, raw metals, various kinds of cloth and canvas... Sometimes she'll even find buyers for the artisans she supplies." Joyride says.

"Yeah, she bought a bunch of tools from one of the goats we visited." Ruby says, "And he bought a bunch of weird bluish metal bars in return."

Emerald asks what the blue metal bars were.

"Blue Iron." Joyride says, "Goats are sort of perfectionists, and so prefer the highest quality materials they can get. For tools, blue iron would probably be pretty good. it wears slowly and is very hard."

Ruby asks if she can climb up on Borba, and when she nods in approval Emerald asks as well. She chuckles, and then nods her head again.

After climbing up atop her back the colt asks where Joyride and Ruby went.

"Gathering intelligence." Joyride says grinning, "For when the white deer comes down. I think I have a plan. It'll be you and me, lil' perv."

"Huh? Why can't I come?" Ruby says, glaring at Joyride.

"Because Emerald was raised in a castle and so probably has some sense of decorum, which is more than I can say for you." Joyride says, grinning at Ruby this time, who sticks her tongue out at the unicorn.

The mare goes on to say that it'll occur the day after tomorrow, and Emerald says that's good because he wants to try and get the etherlock. He asks if she wants to come.

"Eh, sure. The only thing I really have coming up is getting that deer horn anyway."

Emerald asks where Borba's been staying during the nights.

"Well, she obviously can't fit through my front door." Joyride says, "So I set up a place for her to stay in the cellar. It's still a little snug getting her in the doorway, but she can manage."

The colt sits up, and blushing slightly says she has a very pretty mane. He then asks if she wants it combed.

Borba chuckles at this, and nods graciously.

Joyride pulls a comb from under her mantle and levitates it up to the colt. Ruby gets pretty jealous at this, and so the pair take turns brushing the giraffes gigantic head and mane.

As he watches the filly brush Borba's hair, Emerald asks how she decided to become a merchant and travel so far and wide.

Borba smiles a bit sadly again, and Joyride says, "Kicked out of her herd, sort of. She can return there all she wants, but she's not allowed to stay with them."

"Huh? What happened?" Ruby says, stopping her brush and looking concerned up at the giraffe.

"Essentially fraternizing with the enemy, essentially." Joyride says shrugging, "In the area she lived the zebras and the giraffes didn't get along to well. Borba attempted to bind them together in an trade alliance, but the elder's of the herd shot it down. This didn't deter Borba however, and she invited the zebra's to discuss a possible economic solution."

Borba sighs, and lays her head down. Joyride continues though, and says, "The zebras used it as an excuse to get close and attack however. Even though Borba's herd fended them off, there were deaths on both sides and now the relations between the two species were worse than ever. For going against their wishes, the giraffe elders in Borba's herd essentially declared her not of their herd but still an ally. As such, she was allowed to visit them, but never to stay long term."

Emerald takes over the brushing again, and asks how long ago this happened.

"A few years, I think. She's been on the road for a while." Joyride says, looking up in thought.

Emerald says that he can't return to his home either, at least not yet. He says he understands how hard it is, and feels for her.

Borba gives a thankful nod to that comment.

The colt then asks if she is okay down in the cellar, and asks if she needs pillows or blankets or anything.

"You sayin' I can't provide? Look, I set her up nice." Joyride says with a fake pained voice. She walks over to the cellar and pulls out a key and opens the door.

It reveals a large, expensive looking circular couch with a few pillows on it. Underneath the couch is a nice red carpet, and hanging on the wall behind the makeshift bed is a red tapestry with gold trim.

Emerald kinda wants to do it too, but he's a little bit concerned at jumping up on someone's bed. The colt looks up at the giraffe, and she motions to go on.

Emerald rushes and jumps on the couch-like bed as well. It really is quite soft.

"Hey, there aren't blankets here." Ruby says looking around, "Thought you said you provided for her."

"She didn't want them." Joyride says, pointing up at the giraffe, who nods, "She is probably used to sleeping without them or something, I dunno. I can't imagine there are too many places that can accommodate her."

The unicorn rolls her eyes with a grin, and Borba nods in confirmation.

Emerald nods his head vigorously. Soon the pair are off to Emerald's flat and they grab some blankets and pillows from the bed and also a nearby closet. They then dash down back to the cellar. Joyride and Borba were talking, or at least Joyride was speaking to the giraffe, but she stops as soon as she sees the two.

"Ah, the shrimps are back. Guess I'll call it a day." Joyride says.

Emerald asks if she wants to join them as well.

I'm not a fan of the whole "them all being siblings" concept that's been hinted. Unless it's somehow imperative to the story, I wouldn't use it. It just seems incredibly contrived that Em would somehow have a chance meeting with his long-lost sister in a strange city he doesn't know. and then end up bonding with her before they even know they're related.

If there needs to be any relation that links the 3 of them, the fact that they've all been gem-bearers should be strong enough, in my opinion.

Emerald decides to ask Borba a bit about her past.

"Hey yeah! You ever seen any other giraffes in your travels? Like ones outside your herd?" Ruby says, propping herself on her pillow.

Borba nods and takes out a pencil and a notepad. When the other two gather closer she draws a small little comic. From what he can tell she met one out at a village somewhere to the northwest. She was apparently not a very nice giraffe, and had to be brought to justice.

"Ah, hmm... Well that... Sucks." Ruby says, clearly unsure how to answers.

Emerald asks what every ones favorite color is.

Ruby instantly responds red, and Borba thinks for a second, and then writes down "purple".

The colt then asks what Borba's favorite food is.

She draws what appears to be a cube, which she explains is made of mashed acacia leaves, sugar, spices, and gum arabic.

Emerald asks what the difference between zebra culture and giraffe culture, and if they have any religions like the zebras do.

She draws out some pictures that seem to indicate giraffes are tribal and somewhat nomadic. While they don't technically grow farms or anything, giraffes tend to take care of the trees and other food items in their territories. Unlike most other cultures, giraffe's go on hunts. They take and use the bones, hides, and whatever else they can from their kill. The meat is often used to barter, or simply left in a heap outside their camps. This has led to dangerous predators and opportunistic scavengers to tolerate a the herds presence. This, and the fact that they are rather brutish and territorial has led the most giraffes to be at odds with most "civilized" society", and on occasion, their own kind.

Giraffe worship is monotheistic, involving a god that Borba writes the name as "Xorolu", and draws his symbol. A rather stylized drawing of a giraffe head. In giraffe language Xorolu is apparently the same word as the earth beneath their hooves, since in their religion everything was created and walks upon the god's back. While he is the only true god in the pantheon, they have several revered bulls and cows among them.

Her favorite seems to be a giraffe by the name of "Mul the Talkative". This particular giraffe apparently found Xorolu's neck on her travels, and climbed for a thousand years to reach his head and ask him questions. She then came down and spread her knowledge to all giraffes, and that's how the written and (rarely spoken) giraffe language comes from.

Emerald asks how big the normal tribe is

Borba writes that they usually range from about fifty to 300 giraffes, but the latter number is a rare instance for just the largest areas where many giraffes come and go. Sort of a city where no one really lives permanently.

The colt then asks if she has met any other giraffe merchants.

"Nah, I already asked her that." Ruby says, curling up in her blankets, "Out when we were in the goat district. I thought maybe giraffes made it kind of a thing to be merchants."

Emerald then asks if she has anything with giraffe language in it.

She smiles,and reaches around where she left her leg-bags and pulls out a small (for her) book from them. It appears to be a sketchbook of some kind, but inside is what appears to be a giraffe to zebra dictionary. The scrawling nature of the writing makes Emerald think that she wrote the whole thing and asks.

Borba nods, smiling.

Emerald pops the book open and begins to read. To him, it seems like she wrote down words as she thought of them, as most of the start of the book is very conversational giraffe words converted to zebra language, such as "Good Morning!", "My name is ___", and "May I use the bathroom?"

He wished it went a bit more into the grammar of the Giraffe language since the sentence structure seems odd to him, but as he looks up he notices something.

Borba is resting on her pillow sound asleep. The colt then turns to Ruby, who also appears to be asleep, snoring slightly, her blanket seemingly left where she kicked it off herself during her rest.

Jeez, how long was he reading the dictionary? Emerald curls up with the book intending on reading more, but soon sleep catches up with him.

Emerald awakes the next day, still clutching the giraffe dictionary a bit uncomfortably. He thinks the books corners may have left bruises under his fur, in fact.

He looks around to see Ruby and Borba are apparently out of bed already, and walks out the cellar door.

It's early in the day still, and Borba and Ruby are sitting outside chatting.

Emerald bites down hard on the stinkhorn, looking Joyride straight in the eyes. It actually has a pleasant crunch, and tastes a bit like radishes.

The group heads over to the Goat district, which to Emerald seems an almost entirely different city. Unlike most of the other areas the buildings here are completely stone and brick. Even though there are addresses marked on the street, most of the buildings seem to link together, and the colt can even see some of the buildings go underground.

Borba leads them to a shop with a chiseled blackstone sign that says, "Kordemsky Supplies" in the Goat language.

"Borba and I are going to go check out something really quick while you guys figure this out. Hey, you know if you want the best price you gotta flirt a bit right?" Joyride says, waving as the pair walk away.

"I ain't flirting with an old goat." Ruby says, crossing her arms, seemingly mistaken who that comment was meant for.

The foals walk into the store, and Emerald feels like he walked straight into a machine instead. The inside is full of boilers, turning wheels and cogs, steam vents heavy wires.

Behind seemingly the only stationary object in the room, a counter, is a goat. He is quite old with a bushy beard that Emerald is worried might get caught in the whirring instruments around his head. He's colored almost entirely different shades of gray. The only thing colored on him is the gold trim around the cape he is wearing.

"Ah, you are that kind that came in with the giraffe." The goat says, "Is something the matter with my order?"

"Nah, Emerald here wanted to visit." Ruby says, pointing to the colt.

Emerald shakes his head, and then asks why the ammo is hard to get.

"Etherlock ammo was a combined effort of Goat ingenuity and pony magic. Very few people currently have the knowledge or the connections to be able to make them." The old goat says.

Emerald asks if there is a way to customize the thing so it could shoot bullets that burst on impact.

"The gun itself? No, but that's what the special shells are for, and yes, there is a bullet that causes firey explosions." The goat says with a grin not unlike his mentor's.

Emerald thinks about his current monetary situation. He is slightly short the 900. He may be able to haggle it down a bit, but he is pretty sure the goat won't go down a whole lot. Perhaps he can barter or offer "something" else?

It's well established that Joy is totally using us and not giving us anywhere near a fair share. There really isn't anything Emmy can do about it. We don't know how to maintain it, and we don't know if it's even customizable. Fic kinda rushed us through it. On top of that, we got screwed on price. Even assuming it was just like, a quickie and not Em's full rate, we still paid 450 in bits and 700 (1400 if you're including Joy's usual cut) in sex for a 900 bit pistol we *knew* was overpriced going in. Coulda used at least a strawpoll for haggle more vs lewd (no ruby).
