Welcome to /warpone/. Here, we appreciate historical horses and ponies in wartime.

Sgt. Reckless is currently the star of the show, but all warpones are welcome.

*giggles like a cretin*

But on a more serious note, that's a great suggestion. I was thinking that Bacephalus would be a good character for this thread: he was the most famous hoers in all of antiquity (the classical age).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_antiquity
There's also quite a few legends surrounding him:
>The Alexander Romance presents a mythic variant of Bucephalus's origin. In this tale, the colt, whose heroic attributes surpassed even those of Pegasus, is bred and presented to Philip on his own estates. The mythic attributes of the animal are further reinforced in the romance by the Delphic Oracle who tells Philip that the destined king of the world will be the one who rides Bucephalus, a horse with the mark of the ox's head on his haunch.
He even come with his own original cutie mark.

I've always adored wheelguns used in the second World War (but not necessarily 'WWII' pistols). The Nagant, the Webley, but most of all the M1917.

I always thought it looks a little oversized in video games, but I got to see when the operator/curator in a cool local military museum let me hold one, it's fucking huge.

He was cool, when I asked him to take a photo of me with my phone for my class I was there for, he brought me over to the WWII bolt actions and said "choose your weapon."

Support your local military museums. They've got some cool shit, and if you talk with them and show them you actually appreciate the artifacts and the history behind it...they might let you be a part of it.

Yes! World War 1 also had a bunch of unique service revolvers that unfortunately didn't see any more action afterwards. Like the Smith and Wesson No. 3 Revolver, the Italian Bodeo 1889, the Colt New Service (1898), the M1917 of course, the Nagant 1895, various British bulldog revolvers, and the Webley 1887.

I absolutely love WW1, because it's the visual, brutal transition into modern warfare. There are still 'old' weapons in service like revolvers and even lever-actions (The Russians ordered a bunch of modified Winchester Rifles to cope with not having enough Mosins, called the Winchester Model 1915) while the birth of legendary weapons still used today (Such as the Colt M1911 Pistol, Browning M1918 BAR, and the Madsen Light Machine Gun) is occurring simultaneously with new evolutions in weaponry (Like the beginning of the Light Machine Guns for Infantry trend with the Lewis Guns, the Hotchkiss and Benet-Mercie rifles, and the Chauchat LMG as well as the real start of self-loading rifles with the Mexican Mondragon and later the French Model 1917 RSC, not to mention the birth of the submachine gun with the famous German MP18, the Italian Beretta Model 1918, and the Russian Avtomat Federov 1916 and the French Ribeyrolles 1918 Carbine. Although unfortunately those last two never caught on) and the beginnings of long lines of guns continued to this day (Like the Beretta Modello 1915 Pistol, the first in a line of many well-known Beretta Pistols ultimately leading up the modern M9).

It's also the last large-scale war in which Cavalry was effectively used. As in Cavalry charges with swords and guns. Although Cavalry was fairly successful in the early days of the war on the Western Front, unfortunately the stalemate of trench warfare meant that Cavalry officers had to leave their horses pretty early on and enter the trenches with the other soldiers. But on the Eastern Front and the Arabian Front, Cavalry saw much more success

(Cont. Big History bump I guess)

The Russians used Cavalry somewhat effectively against the Germans since Trench Warfare wasn't as pronounced on the Eastern Front as it was on the Western. And in the Middle East, horses were essential. Arabian Rebels fought against the Ottoman Empire using Cavalry, and the Ottomans used them too in engagements with the Russians and then later with the British at the Third Battle of Gaza in 1917, where both sides used Cavalry extensively. The Aussies are also somewhat famous for their use of Cavalry. Although the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Divisions often fought dismounted, they times they did fight mounted made a noticeable difference. The Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade are famous for doing what's pretty much known as the last actually successful Cavalry charge in history, when they galloped into heavy machine gun fire with only their rifles and bayonets, jumped over the trenches into the enemy camp, and dismounted to fight in the trenches while others rode on to capture the essential town of Beersheba. This charge was pretty vital to securing Marshal Allenby's victory on the Palestinian Front. Props to the Aussies for being such horse-riding badasses.

Even the United States used Cavalry in the First World War. US Cavalry served as a scouting force during the St. Mihiel Offensive and later the infamous Meusse-Argonne Offensive of 1918. Pic related is a US Soldier putting a crude gasmask on a horse.

(Cont. again)

Unfortunately, with the developments of modern military tactics and technologies, Cavalry wasn't of substantial use anymore. You gotta remember that World War 1 was the birth of the tank, with the British Landship tanks and the various French tanks, including the Light Renault tank (which revolutionized tank development as it was the first tank with a swiveling turret) and their St. Chamond Moving Gun Assault Tanks (One of which still survives to this day. It was actually just at the Bastille Day Parade in France. I'll admit that I creamed my pants when I saw it). And a horse can't do too much against a tank, so gradually they got replaced. British Landships were vital at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and I hate to say it but a Cavalry charge couldn't have possibly have had the same amount of success. Even the Germans (Who really disliked and doubted tanks in WW1) had their own tank, the monstrous A7V Sturmpanzerwagen. Nicknamed the "Moving Fortress," this thing was a fucking beast, and although it serviced some 27 men per tank and weighed substantially more than any tank the Allies had, it was faster too. They also had cool nicknames, like Schnuck and Siegfried. The first ever tank-on-tank battle actually occurred between a German A7V (Christened "Nixe") and 3 Mark IV Landships at the battle of Villers-Bretonneux in 1918. The A7V ended up losing, but not by too much. Only one of these survives today, a captured one christened Mephisto. Truly legendary stuff. Pictured is the Mephisto in all it's glory

Sorry for the autism-tier history lesson, hopefully someone found all that useful. Anyways, I'd love to have a green about a Cavalry soldier in World War 1. Maybe the story of a British Cavalry Officer on the Western Front and his existential crisis and mental decline as he realizes that cavalry is quickly becoming irrelevant due to the stalemate, and his worries about what'll happen to his faithful steed as he's forced into the horrific trenches with his fellow soldiers. He might continue to attempt to live in the past while the world around him plunges head-first into the modern era of tanks, planes, and machine guns, or he might sadly come to terms with it and emotionally say goodbye to his beloved horse as he enters the trenches and the modern world.

Or maybe it could be about a jovial Aussie Light Horseman who's a part of the many famous battles on the Palestinian Front of the War

Or maybe even an Arabian Rebel and his horse in they're struggle against the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East.

Either way, I'd love to see any of it it and I'd love any Anon who wrote it.

Pictured are some Aussie Light Horsemen

I'd write it myself but just because I know a lot about history doesn't mean I can write a story worth half a (You).

The Charge of the Light Brigade
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
I
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Pretty tasteful to put that line right up in the second stanza. It's a subtle reference to the command fuck-up that ordered them to charge the enemy's artillery head-on.

I think that's mostly just because smaller hoers are easier to control, not because he wasn't tall enough to mount them: He wasn't exactly the best rider, per say.

>>
>>30641302
This.
Historic canon brands are a must. If people still wanna do the hat, it should be a hat with an "N" on it.
>>
>>30641493
It should be the N with crossed sabers behind it and maybe a French flag. He can wear the bicorn as an affectation.
>>
>>30623804
Fun Fact, Reckless's original name was "Ah-Chim-Hai," which translates into "Flame of the Morning"

Pretty cool name if you ask me
>>
>>30641831
>N with crossed sabers behind it and maybe a French flag
gross
the N is sufficient, although a bicorn would be more show-accurate, since Cutie Marks rarely-if-ever incorporate legible characters
>>
>>30641910
Personally I'm all for either just a bicorn or just a cavalry saber.
>>
>>30641910

I think a bicorn with an N would be good. I don't really like the N; it doesn't translate well to a cutie mark, but it's historic and must be included.

So maybe the hat in >>30628051 with an N on it?

Would Confederate pones be racist? Race in humans and in pones isn't really parallel.
>>
>>30645257
Most confederate soldiers didn't really fight for the sake of race relations. Sure, a lot of them were racist, most people were at the time, but that wasn't the purpose of their service.
>>
>>30645257
>>30645437
I can still see them treating Zebras and Donkeys as 2nd class citizens.
>>
>>30645437
Right, I know a lot of them were fighting for the sake of duty (to family, to the South, to their way of life, etc). But now that these horses are sentient as ponies, surely they have opinions about slavery. Were they supportive of their master? Or maybe if they had the choice, they'd have fought for the Union, or not at all?
>>
>>30645257
>>30645437
>>30645533
>>30645539
The simple answer is that any or all of them could be racist, but there's no need for all or any of them to be racist.

The real question is, "Does /warpone/ want five more Aryannes?"
>>
>>30645728
1800s racism isn't the same as "GAS THE KIKES RACE WAR NOW" racism, although obviously I don't expect /mlp/ to be able to consistently make the disticntion in their handling of the characters.
The pony equivalent of classical racism would be noticing that Zebras speak in rhymes, earth ponies are good at farming, griffons are greedy userers, etc., and being surprised if anyone made a big deal out of it (i.e., exactly what's depicted in the actual show).
>>
>>30645728
>More Aryannes
That's a good point, but I've always been wary of outright celebrating Confederates. I can appreciate a realistic, respectful introspection and look at their history, but someone who fights for slavers... I can't really honor that.

Of course, this isn't the horse's fault. So I'm trying to think of a way I can properly appreciate those pones. It's much easier when it's a clear hero like Reckless, but all the Confederate stuff makes it complicated.

That said, I'm definitely excited to see what this thread wants to do with those horses.

>>30645940
Separate the two.
You can respect the accomplishments of a person even if your views are diametrically opposed to their own.
>>
>>30646099
Yes, I respect Robert E. Lee's prowess, but I can't say I respect his accomplishments since they were in support of the Confederacy. It's those very accomplishments that I can't respect.
>>
>>30645940
slavery was part of it, but the real issue was the man keeping the little people down(irony)
slave states were chiefly rural, with less population and less political sway. Lincoln was anti slave, so when he became president the confederate states seceded from the union. The war was kind of a political protest that got way out of hand.

People like to demonize the Confederacy cause they had slaves, ignoring that neutral states had them too. Yeah, there's a lot of racism in the south today, but there's just as much everywhere else. New York has about as many racists as Mississippi.

>You take a step forward up towards the snowy hill.
>It looks like dusk, and the wind is howling just like it was when you were ambushed before
>The fog and blowing snow won't let you see more than a couple feet in front of you
>So you just keep walking up the hill
>Step by step, you inch closer towards the top
>After an eternity you reach it.
>The fog and wind and snow suddenly stop, and it's deathly quiet
>There's a man standing mournfully next to a lone tree atop the hill
>He's facing away from you, but you notice he has several holes in his torso and his uniform is bloodstained
"Hey!" you shout. "Are you alright?"
>He turns to face you
>His skin is deathly pale, and his narrowed eyes lack any spark of life
>Wait..
>The uniform, the holes in his chest..
>"You killed me."
>No..
"I.. I.. W-what-"
>As you struggle to find the right words to stay another man walks up the hill
>He's wearing the same uniform as the soldier by the tree, except instead of holes in his chest he has a knife embedded in his throat
>Blood is running down from his wound.
>"You killed me too, Private."
>"We had family."
>"We had friends."
>"We had comrades."
>As they speak they slowly shuffle towards you.
"No! S-stop! This is war, I had to!"
>"You shouldn't be here Private."
>"I bet you miss home."
>"You could have avoided us, Private."

>You're in a cold sweat and breathing heavily
>Holy shit..
>Reckless is fast asleep on top of you as usual
>The first rays of sunshine dimly illuminate the inside of the tent
>You try your best not to wake her with your sudden panic, but she stirs anyways
>"Private?" she asks sleepily
>"Are you okay?"
>...
"Uh.. yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Eeyup."
>"Are you sure? I thought I heard-"
>She's obviously not convinced.
"Y-yeah, never been better Sarge."
>Reckless eyes you suspiciously before standing up to stretch
>"Whatever. I suggest we get moving if you want that promotion, Private."
>Oh right!
>You reminisce on your dream a bit before standing up yourself
>As much as you hate to agree with those figures in your dream, they were right..
>You do miss home.
>A lot.
>Even if you can only remember it partially..
>You shake your head to clear your mind of those thoughts
>This was your home now.
>>
>>30646956
>You and Reckless exit the tent together
>The camp is quiet during the early hours, with a few soldiers congregating at the mess tent for breakfast
>You'd be joining them soon after your promotion
>The sunlight shimmers off the snow covering the camp
>All quiet.
>When you enter the Warrant Officer's tent you find him leaning back on his chair, dead asleep
"Uhh.. Sir? You good?"
>Was that a bottle next to him?
>He awakes with a start
>"W-what? Oh, hey Private."
>He rubs his eyes tiredly
>"I assume you're here for the promotion?"
"Yes sir."
>"Good. Uh, sorry if isn't as formal as you'd like, but I think we can both agree that there isn't much time for that in war."
>He gets up to shake your hand
>"Welcome to the rank of Lance Corporal, Anon. But if you don't mind I think I'll still call you Private." he says with a smirk
>Reckless stifles a laugh
>You fight the urge to kick her, and instead reach out to shake the Warrant Officer's hand
>"Thank you, Sir."
>The two of you shake hands, and McCain resumes his seat at his desk
>"Stay safe, alright Anon? And keep Reckless safe too."
>Reckless rolls her eyes
>She has 'I can keep myself safe.' written all over her
>You hold back a chuckle
"I'll try my best Sir."

>>30646963
>The next few months pass by uneventfully
>You at least make sure to trade the Arisaka rifle you picked up in for the rifle you're familiar with: The M14 Semi-Auto
>But after that, the mixture of repeatedly deflecting Reckless's romantic advances and all the menial tasks of winter all just blend together until you can't keep track of them anymore
>The only thing that really stands out are your dreams
>You keep returning to the snowy mountain, and conversing with the two soldiers you have killed
>Sometimes you'd talk about home.
>Sometimes you'd talk about the war.
>Sometimes you just wouldn't talk at all, simply sitting there in silence with them
>No matter what you did, there was something peaceful about the dreams
>But they always ended abrubtly, and it's beginning to get hard to differentiate the dream from reality
>You're convinced you're going insane.
>But you feel like you'd be better off not telling anyone
>You just hoped that eventually the dreams would end
>Even if they did feel peaceful.
>Soon enough the snow began to melt, and the early signs of spring began to show
>It was getting warmer by the day
>And the dreams were becoming less and less frequent
>And things were going somewhat well in the war too
>Actual peace talks had finally begun
>You might actually be home within a year or so
>If things keep up the way they're going, that is
>Late one spring night you and Reckless are talking in your tent over a game of cards
>>
>>30646971
>"Oh, I just love spring!" she says
"How come?"
>"It reminds me of when I was a foal. Back on this little racetrack.."
>You keep playing in silence for a few seconds
"Would you have stayed there if you had the chance?" you ask
>"Hell no! This is my life now. It's all I have. And even when the going get's tough.. we still have eachother."
"Do you think you'll go back when this is all over?"
>"I.. don't know." she says hesitantly
>"I know there were other horses.. and I had a different name. And there were some other people, but I can't remember much of it now. Only that they were nice. It was nice. But I still don't know if I'll go back.. I hardly know that place anymore."
"Maybe when this is all over I can take you back home with me," you suggest. "To the States."
>"I think I'd like that." Reckless says with a smile
>"I think I'd like that a lot."
>The two of you share a moment before you realize somethings off
"Wait a minute, where are my chips? Sarge, are you eating them again!?"
>"W-what? N-noo, I-"
>"Hey! Are you two awake?"
>Warrant Officer McCain pokes his head into your tent
>There's bags under his eyes, and he looks tired
>Really tired.
>"Something big just came up. The Chinese are trying to gain some leverage; there's just been a big attack on the Nevada Cities Outposts and firefights are still going on. I need you two ready in 10 minutes to bring them some support."
>You both nod and start scrambling to get your gear on
>M1 helmet, check.
>Bayonet, check.
>M14 Semi-automatic Rifle, check.
>M3A1 Grease Gun, check.
>Backpack and ammo, check.
>You're ready.
>>
>>30646979
>After hastily packing ammo and first aid onto Reckless and hastily getting ready yourself, the pair of you leave the base to join the battle
>The Nevada Cities Outposts wasn't terribly far from base
>Located on the front, it's been a suspected area of attack for a while now
>The longer you and Reckless walked, the louder the sounds of the fighting got
>You could hear artillery barrages in the distance and as you got closer to the hills you could hear small arms fire and shouting
"We better hurry up!" you say looking to Reckless
>The two of you reach the site some time after midnight.
>Looking up, you see a bunker engulfed in flames
>There's various firefights happening on the hill as well
>The fires and gunshots are the only things that illuminate the battlefield
>It looks like Outpost Vegas is lost.
>Along with Reno.
>But it seems that at least Carson was still in Marine hands
>"This isn't good." Reckless says, pausing to witness it all
"No, it really isn't." you say. "We should go. The other Marines need these supplies."
>And so you head to Outpost Carson
>The sounds of gunfire are unrelenting as you march
>When you arrive at Outpost Carson you find chaos
>Men are running around everywhere, checking on the wounded, asking for orders, helping wherever they can
>One of them runs up to you looking relieved
>It's a Gunnery Sergeant
>"Oh thank God! Are these the supplies from base camp?"
"Yes, sir. Ammunition and first aid."
>"Perfect! Now that we have this, Lance Corporal, I'm gonna need your help. We're launching a counter-attack with F Company and we need every man we can get."
"Sir, yes Sir!" you shout
>You leave Reckless with the group of soldiers remaining to safeguard Outpost Carson
>As tough as she is, she can't really do much in a firefight
>What with being a horse and all.
>"Hey!" she says before you leave
"Hmm?"
>"Don't get killed."
>>
>>30646987
>"Ready men!?"
>The CO stood in front of you, looking at his soldiers expectantly
>You were joining the lead platoon of the company at Reno Block in their effort to retake Outpost Vegas and Outpost Reno
>Multiple hours of fighting had allowed them to retake the blocking position at least, but not yet the Outposts
>You check your M14
>Loaded and ready.
>The CO nods after a couple seconds
>"Let's GO!"
>You and the other men of the Platoon move up from the blocking position, a dark mass in the night, rustling through the sparse shrubbery of the hillside
>It doesn't take long for the Chinese to respond to the movement with a hail of bullets
>A few men in front of you fall as bullets slice into them
>Some men take potshots towards the enemy-controlled Outposts as they run
>The ones who are armed with automatic weapons try to lay down some suppressive fire
>A man running alongside you falls with a sharp cry as a bullet tears into his torso, his face contorting in pain
>Shit!
>You need to find cover, and fast!
>But there is none on the incline.
>Lifting your M14, you fire as you move up in the hopes that it'd make enemy soldiers think twice about poking their heads up to shoot you
>Just keep running. Just keep running
>The sound of small arms fire around you is deafening
>You don't think it'll ever end
>But over it you can hear explosions beginning to land nearby
>Mortars!
>One lands to the right of you, engulfing at least 5 men in flames
"No!" you shout over their pained screams
>You jump into a recent crater for cover and quickly reload your M14
>Poking your head up, you fire a couple rounds before ducking again as enemy fire hits the dirt around you
>"Fall back!" a voice shouts over the chaos
>"Fall back!"
>"Retreat!"
>>
>>30646996
>No time to waste.
>Kicking off from the floor of the crater, you rush back towards the blocking position
>It's a race to reach the somewhat safe position before death can catch up.
>Just keep running.
>Don't look back.
>"Help!" a voice cries from the ground
>"Help me, please!"
>The pure fear in his voice is enough to make you look around for where it's coming from
>Scanning the area as you run, you see the source of the voice
>It's a wounded Marine lying amongst a couple dead bodies, waving his hand to grab anybody's attention
>It's hard to see him in the dead of night
>You probably wouldn't have if he hadn't raised his hand
>With bullets landing in the dirt at your heels, you sprint towards him to help
>Once you get closer you can see that theres more than one bullet hole in his chest
>After slinging your rifle over your shoulder you hook your arms under his armpits and drag him backwards towards safety
>"Oh thank God! You saved me!"
"Don't thank me yet!"
>>
>>30647004
>Other Marines run by you as you drag your comrade back towards safety
>You mentally tune out the sound of the Marine repeatedly thanking you, choosing to focus on getting you both out of this alive instead
>Mortar Fire continues to barrage you and the other retreating forces
>Some are blown to bits by the explosions, while others are more fortunate
>And there are far too many close calls.
>The sound of small arms fire hadn't paused once since the charge began
>You wouldn't last much longer out here
>And neither would any other soldier
>After what seems like an eternity of slow retreating and a hailfire of bullets, you finally near the relative safety of the blocking position
>"Hurry soldier, come on!"
"Hey!" you shout backwards. "We got wounded over here!"
>A cluster of soldiers holding first aid and treating other wounded respond by motioning for you to go to them
>You drag your wounded comrade to them and lay him out flat for them
>A few kneel down next to him, and you follow suit
>His breaths are coming short and raggedy
>And in the soft moonlight, you can see that he's pale.
>Deathly pale.
"Stay with me buddy! You're gonna make it through this!"
>But even as the words left your mouth, you knew.
>He was already gone.
>>
>>30647007
>You took part in 2 other offensives that night.
>All within an hour.
>They were all as effective as the first one was
>Which is to say, not at all
>And each one ended the same way
>With the attacking Marines being forced back by mortars and small-arms
>Each time was as horrific as the first
>But somehow, you made it back.
>You were throughouly shell-shocked by the end of it all, but at least you were alive
>It was announced that the third charge would be the last for now, and that casualties were high
>People were guessing that there were at least one hundred Marines dead.
>It's almost 3am when you're sent back to Outpost Carson
>Some soldiers stay to safeguard Reno Block, while others return with you
>Reckless is happy to see you once you return
>"You're alive! Err, I m-mean, I knew you'd be fine Anon."
>Even after your recent awful experience, you can't help but smile at her futile attempt to hide how much she cared about you
"Eeyup. I'm alright.."
>Your smile fades.
"But I can't say the same for a lot of other Marines."
>Reckless's ears droop
>"I figured as much.." she says
>The Gunnery Sergeant from earlier walks up to you two
>"Get some rest, both of you. We need Reckless ready by dawn as an ammo carrier. We cannot afford to lose here, so we need our boys as well supplied as possible."
>Better ammo-carrying than futile assaults, you guess
"Yes, Sir!" you say before sitting down next to Reckless
>This was gonna be a long day.
>>
>>30647015
>The sun just barely begins to poke over the horizon, shining a dim light on the hills of the area
>You're getting Reckless ready for a long day of ammunition hauling
>You didn't get much sleep in the few hours you had to rest
>But that was OK.
>Because you had a feeling that the man you failed to save last night would probably be paying you a visit in your next dream..
>You try not to think about it
>Don't think like that.
>There was nothing you could've done.
>After strapping various recoilless rifle shells to Reckless, and putting a few of them in your own backpack, you're ready to start things off
>You're mostly carrying these to the Recoilless Rifle Platoon as they fired down onto the enemy Chinese
>Each trip takes about 20 minutes, walking up and down the winding trail of the hillside
>Reckless has the trail memorized after just a few trips
>Up and down, up and down..
>The Recoilless Rifle Platoon is grateful for your help in keeping them supplied
"Kill as many Red Chinese bastards as you can with these." you say during one trip
>"Consider it done." a member of the gun crew replies with a tired grin
>>
>>30647019
>And so the cycle went on
>Until one time, on the trip to deliver more ammo, something catches you by surprise
>About halfway there you encounter a roadblock
>A tipped-over tree blocking the trail
>This certainly wasn't here before.
>And there's a small crater by where the base of the tree would have been
"What? When did this happe-"
>Suddenly over the background noise of far-out small arms fire you hear a barrage of louder bangs
>And the sound of splinters shooting off the tipped tree as bullets slam in to them
>Uh oh.
"Get down!" you shout, vaulting over the tree to take cover
>Reckless takes a few splinters as she jumps over the fallen tree herself
>"Shit!" she screams angrily. "What do we do?"
>Unslinging your rifle, you quickly poke over the tree to fire a few shots at the Chinese ambush
>You try to see how many there were before ducking back down but there's no way to know for sure
>All you know is that there's a lot of them.
>Damn it..
"Go!" you yell at Reckless
>"W-what!?"
"GO! The gun crews need this ammo!"
>Several more bullets slam into the tree and fly overhead
>"B-but what about you?" she cries desperately
"I'll keep them busy, Reckless, just GO!"
>She looks into your eyes
>You can see sadness and regret welling up in hers.
>She closes them before quickly giving you a surprise kiss
>Before you can say anything she pulls back and takes off along the trail
>The date is March 27th, 1953.
>This is the date when Sergeant Reckless became Marine legend by making 51 supply trips in one day
>But for you, Lance Corporal Anonymous, outcomes are looking very different..
>>
>>30647029
>With a deep breath, you bring your rifle back up onto the log
>Time seems to slow down as you take aim at the many Chinese troops moving up to overtake you.
>Each time you pull the trigger another soldier falls with a pained scream
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
>One after the other the advancing soldiers collapse as your bullets strike them
>Enemy bullets miss you by a hair, or hit the tree you're using as cover
>But eventually one finds it's mark.
>You let out a short yelp as one of their rounds digs itself into your left arm
>The enemy Chinese are angrily shouting to eachother
>"Shāle tā!"
>"Yǐjīng dédào tāle!"
>You can't shoot a rifle with only one hand
>So you stand and drop your M14 to reach for your Grease Gun
>After drawing it and taking aim, you let loose a storm of bullets onto the advancing ambushers
>The RATATAT of your little submachine gun fills your ears, drowning out the cries of your attackers
>The number of bodies on the trail in front of you grows as you hold down the trigger
>But all too soon you hear the CLICK! of an empty gun.
>It doesn't take long after that for two more enemy bullets to find new homes in your chest.
>The force of the impact sends you back down to one knee with another shout of pain
>In a final act of desperation you draw your Colt M1911, remembering how it helped you last time you were injured all those weeks ago
BANG! BANG!
>You fire off as many aimed rounds as you can while enemy shots slice through you
BANG! BANG!
>You fire off a few more, but
>A man can only take so much.
>As you loose off your last round a multitude of bullets punch through you
>You regretfully let out your last breath as you fall over sideways
>You're dead before you even hit the ground.
>>
>>30647039
>"S-stupid Lance Corporal!" Reckless mutters to herself as she runs
>"W-what was he thinking, staying behind like that!?"
>Suddenly she hears gunfire violently erupt behind her
>Tears start to well up in her eyes
>"He'll be fine though, r-right? H-he has to be!"
>But she already knows the answer to that.
>...
>Reckless is forced to take a different supply route coming back down so as to avoid another ambush
>The rest of her trips are done in a somber manner, but she completes them nonetheless
>At the end of the day once her work is done, she slips away from the other Marines to return to the felled tree on the trail.
>She's tired from all the work today
>But that doesn't stop her from looking for you.
>As she walks she maintains the little glint of hope that maybe, somehow, she wouldn't find you lying there
>That maybe you managed to slip away, or escape
>Or somehow not die.
>But as she reaches the site and sees your body, that hope diminishes completely.
>There you lie
>On the trail in a puddle of blood, with your guns and spent shell casings surrounding gun
>On the other side of the tree she sees the many bodies of the enemy men you held off, but she doesn't care about those
>She rushes towards you

>The Korean War would 'end' four months after the Battle for Outpost Vegas.
>Although technically the war is still ongoing, the fighting stopped on July 27th, 1953.
>The Korean War is often called the "Forgotten War," and for good reason.
>As it happened so soon after World War II, and didn't have nearly as much of an impact, few remember the soldiers of the Korean War.
>The first hot conflict in a long Cold War, the Korean War became more and more overshadowed as the years went on.
>Sergeant Reckless, after the war, would of course arrive at the United States as a hero and go down in history as the mare we all know and love.
>A permanent symbol and reminder of the US Marine' role and sacrifice in the Korean War.
>Warrant Officer Peter McCain would be driven mad after the war by the losses of 'his' troops such as the 4th Signal Construction Company and later the death Lance Corporal Anon so soon after his promotion.
>He committed suicide by gunshot in his Virginia home 2 years after the end of the war.
>As for Lance Corporal Anonymous, your story faded into obscurity after the war's end.
>Although your fellow Marines remembered you fondly, none mourned him more than Sergeant Reckless did.
>But as those who remembered your name passed on, Lance Corporal Anonymous would simply become just another name on the Memorial Wall.
>Another victim of the Forgotten War.
>Another reminder that Freedom Is Not Free.

Aaaand that's the end. I hope you guys enjoyed the ride, and I hope the ending wasn't too shite. I had a lot of fun writing this, so big thanks to everyone reading. /blog

>Reckless's entry into the United States was not without its challenges. The Customs Bureau was not much of a problem but the United States Department of Agriculture insisted a medical check and lab tests be completed before she disembarked from the ship once it reached San Francisco, which would make her late for the Marine banquet where she was to be the guest of honor. The Marines contacted Agriculture Department officials in Washington, D.C. who agreed to allow her off the ship after her blood was drawn for lab tests, with the understanding that if she had glanders or dourine, she would be destroyed or sent back to Japan. Many of the Marines who actually knew her were incensed at what they considered an affront to her honor when they learned that dourine was an equine sexually transmitted disease.[35]

Any drawfriends about? I think this would be pretty hilarious as a little comic, with Reckless being the one getting pissed off about the delays and the implications of the tests.

>Your 1911 still stays in your other hand, slide locked back and covered in blood.
>"A-Anonymous!"
>The familiar voice rings in your ears, and you're tackled onto your back by an even more familiar face.
>Noticing the lack of bitter cold and snow around, you look to your sides.
"Sarge? I... where are we?"
>A taller figure looms over you, practically making you jump out of your skin.
>It's a big white horse, with a... horn and wings.
>"Do not be alarmed, Sir Anonymous. You are in the land of Equestria, and you are safe."
>You spring back up again, clutching your pistol and holding Reckless close.
"Safe? Where are the damn chinks? Where the hell are we?!"
>Sarge gives you a soft, reassuring smile.
>With your heart pounding in your chest, her look does well to help calm you.
>That's when you notice she doesn't even have any of her gear on.
>Tears start to well in her eyes, and her smile grows.
>"Don't worry, Anon... we really are safe."
>She wraps her hooves around your neck and holds on, pressing against your body like you're going to disappear at any moment.
>The big horse just looks down on you with a smile.
"So who are you? How did I get here?"
>"I am Princess Celestia, co-ruler of this land. You are currently a guest at my castle, and you are here..."
>She nods over at Reckless.
>"At her request."
>Sarge pulls away, eyes brimming with tears and nose running.
>"Never leave me again. S-stupid Private..."
>She gives you a kiss on the lips, then goes back to hugging you, sobbing on your shoulder.
>Despite the blood literally on your hands, you can't feel any pain in your chest.
>You still have questions.
>But for now, Reckless is with you.
>And that's all you need to make sense of things.

Napoleon wasn't short. That was the result of a miscommunication/mistranslation from one set of measurement units to another in two different languages.

He was actually quite tall for his time.

Another historical horse to add to the ranks; Caligula's horse Incitatus
>Latin for Swift or Full Gallop
>stable made of marble
>trough made of ivory
>regal purple blankets
>collar set with precious stones
>had servants that fed him oats with gold flakes mixed in

Caligula even mused about making him a consul. "One suggestion is that the treatment of Incitatus by Caligula was an elaborate prank, intended to ridicule and provoke the senate, rather than a sign of insanity, or perhaps a form of satire, with the implication that a horse could perform a senator's duties."

Equestria follows NO horse rules at all.

No real hierachy.
No harems.
The only emotional response that is remotely accurate is poners run off when anything scary happens.

I can't believe that any sufficiently intelligent warpone would start a military campaign without investing intel into checking out the enemy forces' capacities first.

There's NO WAY they'd charge alicorns without a full understanding and appreciation for what they could do.

It'd be more like:

>hatch plans of conquest
>pool resources and funding
>hire spy to report back capabilities of Canterlotians
>reports back "there are four who are basically omnipotent gods of creation."
>plans of conquest end.
>>
>>30652812

I believe after the revolution Nelson retired to Mount Vernon with Washington while Blueskin was returned to his original owner a few years later with Washingtons thanks. It seems Nelson was Washington's favorite, and it was Nelson who accompanied him to accept Lord Cornwallis surrender. So I wouldn't feel too bad for him.

Blueskin was a half-Arabian whos father was reported to have been owned by the sultan of Morocco. I could easily see him being a large ham.

Nah. They are shit. Alicorns are arrogant to a fault and sent fucking Discord, of all people, to go and capture him instead of doing it themselves or sending the royal guard when Tirek couldn't actually handle ponies without sneak attacks.

Glimglam proved that Alicorns aren't all powerful and prone to being fucked over and the greatest casters have all been Unicorns.

I'm pretty sure the Warpones who are grand strategists would just trap them via a sneak attack. The real issue is that you have to deal with the Elements of Harmony returning since they are the defacto I WIN button.

Personally I don't consider revolvers a great option as a carry gun or HD gun, so they're purely fun and aesthetic guns.

Keeping that in mind, the 1860 army holds a special place in my heart. The fact that it basically has a reloading press built right into the gun is neat as fuck.
>>
>>30658786
I live in an urbanized area lacking places to shoot that aren't indoor pistol ranges, which frown on blackpowder. Otherwise I've been wanting a Remington 1858 clone for years. Lots of these old blackpowder designs had a bullet-seating lever built in under the barrel, yeah.

I can actually see a largish fullsize 4" to 6" revolver in a decently potent caliber being a valid choice for home defense or uniform carry. .357 Mag is as good a cartridge as it ever was and had a fearsome reputation as a manstopper for a reason:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJk_YHO6hDk

And most defensive uses of firearms end one way or the other with three shots or fewer being fired, unless we're talking about poorly-trained civil servants who close their eyes and yank on the trigger over and over until the slide locks back.

I will say that if your purpose is concealed carry, there is very little difference ballistically between .38 Special and .380, and the semiauto pistols using the latter round will be thinner and flatter than any revolver, as well as holding more rounds (the tiny Kahr .380 that's my EDC holds 7+1, compare 5 for J-frames), have better triggers that make them easier to shoot well under stress in a hurry, and reload much faster in the unlikely event that it proves necessary.

I own a 4" GP100 in .357 and would not have any issues using it as a secondary HD weapon (primary is a Romanian AK loaded with 8M3, with a Bushnell red dot on an RS Regulate mount, currently--everybody's using a long gun as primary because long guns are for fighting and handguns are emergency backup weapons, right?). That having been said I'm currently using an M&P .40 with the new green recoil spring and an Apex flat trigger in the sidearm role. I shoot it well and while I know, intellectually, that it doesn't much happen in the real world that there is a need for it, there is something comforting about having sixteen rounds of .40 Gold Dots on tap plus fifteen more in a spare mag.
>>
>>30659093
You have to consider that training can go right out the window when you're in a situation as stressful as a defensive shooting, your fine motor skills get fucked, your heart goes crazy and your hands shake, your vision gets fucked.
Having a 10-15 round capacity in that situation where you can get away with missing a few shots or not hitting any vitals can go a long way.

Of course training is still important so you're not just magdumping into the air but I'm just saying your average carrier doesn't really train with severe adrenaline rushes in mind, so any advantage you can get is a good one.

Basically, don't gamble with your life, anything you can have that boosts your chances of making it out of a lethal situation is good to have.
>>
>>30659506
That's true, but there is something to be said for going to the range more than once a year to fire 50 rounds to re-qual on a course that could be passed with five minutes familiarization by anyone whose daily attire doesn't include dark glasses and a white cane, too. Not that the current Big Army qual course is any better; shooting at the enormous, door-sized Type E silhouettes, mostly at 50 feet or less, and scoring them hit/miss only without even scoring rings to reward center-mass hits, seems to me to be a bit silly.

Prior to Obama's election and the subsequent .22 LR shortage, I was shooting 1000-1500 rounds a week through a beat-up old Ruger 22/45 target pistol that I still have, though I do most of my training with a stainless Mk. III now (how may cops fire a thousand rounds in an entire career? That's twenty years of once-a-year fifty-round quals). Smallbore pistol happens to be a hobby of mine--and I am very, very, very far from the most determined or devoted hobbyist out there.

It isn't really easy, nor especially safe, to simulate an adrenaline dump. I've heard of people going to a range with a buddy who sets off a string of firecrackers on the floor behind them and yells at them and shoves them while they're shooting. This tends to get them thrown out and banned from the premises.

I've shot a little competition, which is supposed to be helpful--if you're the sort of hypercompetitive individual whose heart races at the thought of getting a little brass trophy to put above the fireplace. I don't worry about that. I'm not good enough to be in the running for the prizes, though I place in the top half a little more often than not. So I concentrate on concentrating on the front sight, on my grip, on my stance, on trigger control and follow-through. I want to be able to do these things automatically, without thinking about them. I have not yet had to fight for my life with a pistol, and hope I never do, so I can't tell you how well it works.
>>
>>30660112
Shooting while exhausted might help simulate a stressful situation, a five to ten minute fast sprint with your holster on to the target. Though that kinda requires going innawoods to shoot.

Really, not much you can do to prepare for a legit shooting situation outside of just have the fundamentals down to muscle memory and hope you've beaten your skills hard enough into your brain that when the moment comes you'll do everything right.

>The enemy will soon breach the gates.
>Shining Armor is the closest thing to a commander in chief still active.
>In his desperation he has sought the counsel of less reputable wizards.
>They have told him of a spell.
>The kind of spell your mother warned you about.
>Several court mages have resigned in protest, choosing to die with a clean conscience.
>Even those who remain think it is a bad idea.
>Several beings from a world more accustomed to war will soon be brought here to fight for Equestria.
>If the world they came from was truly as violent as believed, these creatures might not be anything more than savage beasts.
>And if they are intelligent, there is still no guarantee these beings will aid Equestria, they may even join in it's conquest.
>The sound of a heavy battering ram against the palace gates makes it clear there is little left to lose.
>The spell is performed.
>A brilliant flash of light leaves everypony dazed for a moment.
>Then they notice the six new ponies standing in the center of the room looking confused.
>>
>>30671391
>Shining Armor approaches and begins informing them of the dire situation.
>But soon a large stallion named Bacephalus interrupts him.
>“Do you guys have any wine? It doesn't have to be good, it just has to get me drunk. Oh and mares, attractive breeding aged ones preferably.”
>Shining Armor is stunned silent for a second but before he can reply.
>“There is no time for this.” the imperious Marengo“I see there is an urgent need for strong dynamic leadership, naturally I nominate myself!”
>Sgt. Reckless challenged his nomination . . . by calling him a “cheese eating surrender monkey” and using broken English to express her belief that his parents were brothers.
>Completely unconcerned with the ongoing argument, the revolutionary warhorses Nelson and Blueskin have begun vying for the attention of the beautiful mare Laili.
>Laili blushes, flutters her eyelashes, and politely asks the stallions not to fight over her.
>in a tone that makes it very clear she wants them to continue fighting over her.
>Shining armor sighs and facehoofs.
>Turns out this was a very bad idea for completely different reasons than expected.
>At that moment the invaders breached the walls compromising the structural integrity of the palace.
>Rocks fall, everypone dies.

Had this idea for a day or two, couldn't really think of much to do with it though so I decided to make it short and funny. At least I tried to anyway.

its a play for dominance, poners do this all the time in real life, if they lose, they get a great leader, if they win, theyre a great leader. there's no reason to be afraid, if theyre young and reckless theyre gonna test the bossmare eventually to make sure that shes as on top of it as she thinks shes going to (in place of a boss stallion anyway)

Remember the 6000

>On Easter Monday, 13th April 1360, a freak hail storm broke over English troops as they were preparing for battle with the French during the Hundred Years’ War. So brutal was the storm that over 1,000 men and 6,000 horses lost their lives that night. Convinced it was a sign from God, King Edward rushed to pursue peace with the French, marking the end of the first phase of the Hundred Years’ War.

With 6000 horses dead but only 1000 men I assume those noble beasts gave their lives to save many men.

Not sure how meme/art worthy this can be.

Ok, so apparently the historical record of Red Hare says that it was an exceptional war horse owned by an exceptional general (Lu Bu) and little else.

More fictionalized accounts have the horse changing owners several times, since Lu Bu was kind of a dick. Eventually winding up with Guan Yu, who was much more likable. After Guan Yu died Red Hare loyally starved itself to join Guan Yu in death.

Bucephalus' is an ox head to match the Greek legend. I dunno about other ones...

George Washington's horses might have something American-themed. Or perhaps Blueskin would have something vain, since they often painted Washington riding him over Nelson due to his beauty, even though Nelson was Washington's true favorite.

>The enemy base commander entered the room smiling and holding his nose smugly in the air.
>Looking above more so than at the two ponies his troopers had taken captive.
>”Well well well.” he said as he finally deigned to look his captives in the eye. “What do we have here?”
>“At a glance, it would seem to be two of Equestria's elite special mission force! Here to destroy my heavily fortified base!” his words thick with feigned surprise.
>“But that just can't be,” his expression turned angry as he brought his face close to the nearest pony tied up before him “Given how easy it was to capture-”
>BLAMMO!!!
>“Ouf, ouch, ah, what the?! She headbutted me!”
>“That just sample, cockbreath!” the unmistakably P.O.'ed Sergeant Reckless shouted, “Next I gonna snap you dick off, break every bone in commie body, shove you head even farther up own ass, then I really gonna get mad!”
>Her words became a nearly indecipherable stream of obscenities and threats.
>“Ah fuck, what are you idiots waiting for?” the commander angrily berated his troopers “Gag her!”
>“Uh, we're a little scared to get too close to her teeth, boss”
>“I don't care just do it!”
>“Excuse me?”
>>
>>30725216
>“Huh?” the commander turned his attention to the other captured pony.
>And noticed the stunningly beautiful mare smiling pleasantly at him.
>“Oh my,” he quickly fixed his hair “and, uh, who might you be, my dear?”
“You may call me Laili” she said with a graceful bow before daintily trotting towards him“And I may assume you are the General in command here?”
>“Colonel actually, though I am in command.” he chuckled nervously “Wait, weren't my troopers instructed to tie you up?”
>“Oh they did, but the ropes chaffed ever so much that your troopers decided to loosen them,” she turned and waved to the troopers who smiled dopily and returned the wave.
>Even while they still tried to subdue Reckless.
>“I do hope you're not angry with them. Such sweethearts.”
>The commander might have pressed the issue further, but as she turned she flicked his nose with the tip of her tail.
>Suddenly, all thoughts of base security were banished from his mind.
>Although, thoughts of tieing this mare up certainly were not.
>“I simply must apologize for my colleague's behavior.” she practically cooed as she returned to him “It would be a shame to mark a face as handsome as yours, she didn't draw blood did she?”
>“Oh no, I'm quite alright, I assure you.”
>“Your face is oh so red, are you sure you're not injured or ill perhaps? I have half a mind to take you straight to bed.”
>She gasped and covered her mouth as though surprised at her own words “That came out all wrong, oh do forgive me, Colonel!”
>“Oh, uh” he pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the sweat from his brow “T-think nothing of it madame.”
>She giggled coquettishly.
>>
>>30725221
>“Cheap slut!” bellowed Reckless as she struggled against her bindings “No loyalty, you do anything with dick. Even enemy, even animal, even French pony, 'cept he no do you cause he too busy with stallions.”
>“Didn't I order you to gag her?” The Commander sneered at the troopers.
>“We did!” One of the troopers replied.
>”She just ate the gag is all. . .” Another trooper added.
>“Well, uh . . .” the commander mumbled for a moment “Gag her again, Gosh!”
>“Colonel?” Laili regained his attention by gently caressing his cheek sending shivers up his spine.
>“I do hate to be a bother but when your troops captured us it seems they accidentally ripped my dress.” she looked at him with gooey eyes and displayed the long tear running up the side of her dress.
> The Colonel felt the sweat returning to his brow as he admired her exposed leg and flank.
>“Not that I blame the darlings, of course, they were just doing their jobs, but I was hoping to have it stitched up.”
>“I got some needle and thread. I could fix it for you.”
>“Huh?” the colonel was snapped out of his trance-like state by the words of his trooper.
>>
>>30725223
>“Oh my, well aren't you handy.” Laili fluttered her eye lashes “And such a cutie too”
>“Aw, she thinks I'm cute and handy” the trooper blushed “My own Ma never said that about me.”
“Yeah and she was smart not to.” another of the troopers chimed in stepping between the first trooper and Laili.
>“Listen, he may have supplies but I think you want somebody who actually knows how to sew.” He stepped closer to her. “If you've got a needle, baby, I can thread it.”
>“Hey, buddy!” The other trooper stepped forward. “She was talking to me! I'm gonna help her!”
>“And how's a dumb ugly mook like you supposed to help her? With your 'unique personality'?”
>“Enough!” The beleaguered Colonel attempted to regain control over the situation. “A mere repair job will not do.”
>“Within this base,” He closed his eyes and smugly lifted his nose “there are many fine Equestrian dresses and jewelry. Spoils of war you see. I believe we may have one or two such dresses radiant enough to compliment your immense beauty.”
>He lifted her foreleg to kiss her hoof.
>>
>>30725226
>She blushed and giggled profusely. “Oh Colonel, I simply couldn't impose. A needle and thread will be fine.”
>“See, she does like me best!”
>“Aw, you're full of it!”
>“She likes me!”
>“No, She likes me!”
>“Hey what about me I'm the one who loosened her bindings?”
>“But I'm the one caught her.
>“That just means you're the one who tore her dress, dumbass!”
>“All of you shut up! I'm in charge here and if she likes anyone; it's me!”
>“Aw, shadup yerself! Only reason ya got this job was cause your uncle's a real General!”
>“Oh yeah?”
>“C'mere!”
>“I'll show you!”
>“And I've got a sparkling personality!”
> The shouts turned to shoves.
>The shoves turned to strikes.
>Weapons were drawn, bodies fell.
>Within minutes the entire base was consumed in a swirling confused melee.
>Mighty engines of war burned and walls crumbled as the entire base was swept up fighting over the heart of a mare.
> A mare who was no longer even on the base.
>Laili had scooped Sergeant Reckless onto her back and fled just as the fight began.
>With the enemy preoccupied fighting each other slipping out was no problem.
>In the morning the Equestrian regulars would have no trouble mopping up whatever was left of the once imposing base.
>Once safely away Laili untied Reckless.
>“I-I want apologize.” Reckless sheepishly admitted. “I always think you just dumb bimbo who use stallion to get what she want. Always think very little of you.”
>Reckless then gave Laili an enthusiastic smile. “After tonight, I see hidden depth in you. That was smart escape plan!”
>“Escape plan?” Laili paused and quirked her eyebrow in a genuinely puzzled manner. “What escape plan?”

As any majority-black city or country will show, blacks need adult supervision to function in civilization.
All high culture is dependent on slavery of one form or another.
Technological progress has greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but has destabilized society, has made life unfulfilling, has subjected human beings to indignities, has led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and has inflicted severe damage on the natural world.
The economic boom after WW2 probably would have fixed everything if the Boomers hadn't fucked everything up.
The bullshit that's fucking the economy now is the price of labor being permanently depressed by the presence of women in the workforce; there will never be enough jobs for all the men and women in the country, especially once automation starts causing huge swaths of jobs to permanently cease to exist.

I like the idea of using the shield as a starting point. Maybe add a feather quill for Nelson since he was first owned, and named for, one of the men who signed the declaration of independence.

I don't know what to use for Blueskin, he's described as being a great riding horse but easily spooked by the noise of battle. Can anyone think of a symbol that goes with that?

>Every pony makes mistakes.
>Some ponies forget their mothers birthday.
>Other ponies tear a hole in the fabric of space/time to summon warriors from another dimension.
>Shining Armor regrettably found himself among the latter.
>After the princesses escaped from the enemy and returned to lead Equestria, Shining Armor presented the warhorses to Celestia as prime candidates for her royal guard.
>He wasn't exactly sure whether he had truly convinced her of their value or if she simply realized what a bunch useless jackasses the warhorses really were and pawned them off on him.
>Either way, Shining Armor was stuck finding busy work to keep them occupied while he coordinated Equestria's defenses.
>Shining sat in his office going over requisition forms, coming to one in particular that caught his eye.
>”Miss Long,” he spoke into the intercom on his desk“could you arrange a meeting with the regimental band leader? I'd like to discuss the band's expenditures.”
>“Sure can, sugar.” Lucy Long had been one of the easier warhorses to work with, she paid attention, followed instructions, and had a pleasant disposition.
>Secretary work didn't exactly suit her but she was proving herself more useful than the problematic warhorses.
>“One more thing mister Armor . . .”
>>
>>30731914
>The door to Shining Armor's office loudly burst open with such force as to partially rip it from it's hinges.
>“General!” the booming voice of one such problematic warhorse named Bucephalus practically shook the room. “I would have an Audience with you! Now!”
>“I'll see him now. Thank you, Miss Long.” Shining spoke into the intercom, even though he could now clearly see Lucy through the doorway.
>“Am I not an exemplary war horse?” Bucephalus asked rhetorically. “And a seasoned veteran? Am I not a Hyperion among stallions?”
>>
>>30731917
>“I dunno, are you?” Shining Armor responded without missing a beat.
>Or even looking up from his paperwork.
>“Jest with me at your own peril! I have completed your task and found it was hardly the labor of Heracles you made it seem!”
>Bucephalus then dropped a book full of papers on Shining Armors desk.
> “Oh yeah, I see you finished coloring all the pictures, even stayed inside the lines.”
> “General there are enemies to crush, lands to conquer, and, not to mention, beautiful mares to woo.”
>“ . . .And?”
>“And you have me trifling with these idle diversions unworthy my greatness.”
>Shining armor Could have mentioned that while Bucephalus was unequaled physically he was easily outsmarted, or that he was hopelessly unfamiliar with Equestria and it's military technology,
>Not to mention all of his pick up lines were real duds.
>Seriously, just trying them on the mares two towns over won't fix Bucephalus's lack of female companionship.
>“Yep, there sure are.” Was his considerably more diplomatic rejoinder, while he continued leafing through documents “Wow, how does one regimental band go through so many sousaphones, anyway?” >“I warn you, my passion for battle is a burning flame, the likes of which this nation, nay, this world, has never before borne witness to!” Bucephalus seemed to be speaking more to himself for a moment before returning to Shining. “A flame which you may either bask in and be warmed by or be consumed and burned to a cinder!”
>>
>>30731923
>Bucephalus threatening to take over Equestria.
> Is it Tuesday already.
>Shining Armor always had to fight the urge to ask Bucephalus 'you and what army?'
>He was woefully ill-equipped and ill-tempered to lead ponies into battle and there were few who would really follow him should he rebel.
>All the same Shining had to placate him somehow.
>“Fair enough, I do have another assignment but . . .”
>“But what? Out with it!”
>“I'm just not sure that you're ready.” With that Shining glanced at a different book on his desk.
>“Bah! You'll find there is no trial for which I am unprepared!” Bucephalus defiantly grabbed the book and with a flourish opened it on the desk. “Now tell me what this is.”
“Well, it's something that comes from . . .” Shining paused dramatically.
>Those improv classes Cadence had dragged him to were actually paying off.
>>
>>30731925
>“From where? Tell me!”
>“The East.”
>“The mystic East?”
>“The same.”
>Apparently in Bucephalus's home the East was regarded as a strange and fearful place that even the mightiest king could not conquer.
>Mentioning it made it easier to goad Bucephalus to do something he didn't want to do.
>You don't want to peel potatoes? Well, I suppose that's to be expected they do come from the mystic East after all!
>Digging latrines is beneath you, you say? That's exactly what the mystic East wants you to think!
>You don't like playing the quiet game while the rest of us plan the battle? I guess that just means the mystic East wins after all.
>Shining Armor did worry that with time the ploy might lose it's effectiveness.
>He had a plan for that though.
>He'd just start referring to things coming from 'Beyond the mystic East'.
>The heavy silence that had fallen between the two was broken as Bucephalus reverently asked “What is it called?”
>“It's called” Shining paused for effect “Sudoku.”
>Bucephalus narrowed his eyes and repeated the word, soft yet fierce all at once, “Sudoku.”
>He suddenly reared up and found his roaring voice once more. “Then I vow, I shall conquer this Sudoku!”
>“And in so doing,” He struck an entirely unnecessary pose looking at and speaking to nobody in particular “I conquer the mystic East!”
>“Okie dokie.” Shinning absentmindedly replied while trying to find his pen “Let me know when you finish because I have yet another task for you every bit as fearful.”
>Shining also had a book of crossword puzzles lying around somewhere.
>“Ah, but there's the difference between you and I general! I know no fear!”
>He turned dramatically and left the room pausing only to frown while examining the damage he had caused to the door.
>A gentle prod from his hoof sent what was left of the door falling to the ground.
>He smiled and nodded, satisfied with his work.
>And with that he swiftly departed.
>>
>>30731930
>Shining Armor retrieved the extra strength antacid from his desk and reached for his intercom.
>“Miss long? Could you have some requisition forms for a new office door printed up and brought to my office?”

This one's a little shorter, a little rougher, and a little not as funny as the last one I did. I have an idea for a green I think is better, but I'm not going to have time to work on it for a while.

Did a little short about Incitatus out of boredom
>What..?
>Where were you?
>You get up to stretch and look around
>You coulda sworn you were just in your marble stable taking a nap.
>You are Incitatus. Caligula's one and only (in)famous horse
>Wherever you are now, it definitely isn't Rome anymore
>Even through your hazy morning eyes you can see that the architecture is completely different
>But the place is far from a dump
>From the inside it seems like a place a noble would live
>Well, at least you still have your regal purple blankets.
>Speaking of purple..
>Was that a.. a purple horse standing in front of you?
>With.. wings? And a horn? And a small crown?
>Oh mulum, did you eat the weird mushrooms out back again?
>You are not a clever horse.
>You focus your attention back on the purple pony standing before you
>She's a little shorter than you are, and she looks really, really excited
>Her smile stretches from ear to ear
"Ehm.. Ave?" you ask while standing up
>"OhmygoshIcantbelieveyoureawakeandthatthespellactuallyworked-"
"Quid dicis?" you ask, very confused.
>"What?" she asks in reply
>"Oh, that's right. I should've thought of this."
>Her horn lights up for a moment and she points it towards you
>"Hold still for a second, okay?"
>Oh nihil.
>A beam of light shoots from her horn right at you
>You feel something was over your brain, making you shudder a bit
>You feel different. Alien.
>But as suddenly as it started the feeling is gone, and everything seems back to normal
>"There. Can you understand me now?"
"I- what? What'd you just do to me?"
>"Simple translation spell. Don't worry about it."
>You have so many questions.
"What's happening? Where am I? Why are you purple? Why do you have wings? And a horn? How did you do that with your horn-"
>"I figured you might have questions, so I made a brochure!"
>>
>>30734366
"A.. a what?"
>She raises a booklet with her magic horn, opening it in front of you
>"It's like a little book that tells you all about a place!"
>Oh.
"Let's see it then."
>You begin to read through it
>"Welcome to the magical land of EQUESTRIA!" it reads
>"Home of the ponies, Equestria is a magical place filled with friendly faces! Ruled by our two great Princesses, we have.."
>It goes on to list the various attractions and places to visit there are, while not-subtly hinting that there's friendly faces *everywhere*
>The brochure even has paintings!
>Of friendly faces.
>Paintings of happy ponies smiling left and right
>The author was *really* trying to emphasize how friendly this place is
>But whoever painted this really had an eye for detail. You don't think you've ever seen so much in any painting in Rome
"Who painted this? The detail is impeccable!"
>"Painted? This is a picture, silly!"
"A what?"
>She brings a hoof to her face
>"There's a lot I'm gonna have to teach you. But I hope you like it here!"
"Yes, speaking of being here; why am I here again?"
>"Well, I found this old spell.. it said it would bring an ancient pony from a realm long forgotten to this one. Personally, I didn't think it would work."
"I'm here because of.. magicae, you said?"
>"Yep!"
>You're convinced you've gone mad.
"Yes, ehm.. if you'll excuse me for a moment.."
>You turn tail and run straight into the nearest wall headfirst in an attempt to wake up from this crazy dream
>>
>>30734372
>"Oh nononono, please don't be dead!"
>Though your vision is hazy, you can make out the panicked purple horse standing over you
>Wait a minute.
>The purple horse is still there..
>This isn't a dream!
"Ohh. agh.."
>"Oh thank Celestia! You're not dead." she says in a relieved voice
>"BUT WHY DID YOU DO THAT!?"
"Ehh.. I thought I was dreaming?"
>She shakes her head
>"Please don't do that again,.."
>Her eyes widen suddenly
>"I never asked you for your name, did I?" she asks sheepishly
>You quickly scurry to your feat and assume a thinking position like that statue you once saw
"Meum nomen est Incitatus. I am the favored horse of the powerful Roman Emperor!"
>You pause to look at the purple horse
"And you are..?"
>"Twilight Sparkle. Princess of Friendship." she says with a curt bow
>A Princess!
>..You probably should've guessed judging by her crown
>"I'm glad to have you here Incitatus!"
"This place is certainly nice, but.. how do I get home?"
>Twilight's ears flatten and she grins guiltily
>"Ehe.. About that.. I uh.. Kinda.. Don't know how to send you back."
>Great.
>"I'm sorry. But I'm sure you'll find yourself very comfortable here!
>Your aren't sure if anything will compare to your old marble stable, but what choice do you have?
>"If you don't mind me asking, what did you do back in your realm?"
>Hmm..
"Mostly I lounged around. But, I was on my way to becoming consul before coming here.."
>Twilight's eyes light up
>"Consul? Like a diplomat?"
"Uhm, certo. Yeah."
>It was more like chief magistrate of joint rule, but you didn't wanna shut this purple horse down
>"I think there might be something you can help me with.."
>Work!?
>Hmph.
"Bene, but I hope I get something out of this."
>"Oh you will. Trust me."

> Truth be told, the only reason you’re alone in this foxhole in the midst of a blizzard is because the sarn’t told you to proceed.
> You’re a good man, you follow orders.
> CRACK!
> It sounds like the skirmish is back on, and you heft your Garand back up to your shoulder and rest it on the line of the foxhole.
> You’ve seen weird enough shit to avoid getting too over your head int hought about this – like the sarn’t eating your helmet lining.
> A round hits home close to your foxhole, and you stagger back and drop your helmet. You still clutch your rifle, gunfire sounding off all about.
> You’re pretty sure you’re the only one without a black powder weapon.
>>
>>30738530

> An arabic-looking chestnut pygmy stallion drops into the foxhole beside you, holding his helmet on his head by biting on the bit.
> “Jolly good to see you!” Copenhagen – or by the terms of conscription, Warrant Officer Copenhagen – greets you, passing your helmet up to you. “Put on your bone dome, lad – can’t see anything of a reason not to protect yourself, now, can we? Awful sorts for us in this right old clusterfuck, ain’t it, now?”
> You ignore the rattling chatter coming from the low-brass to your right, putting your helmet back on and securing the strap as you ready your rifle again, waiting for the fire through the snow and blizzard to stall.
“Any news?”
> “Balbo’s too far out. No help coming for some time! We’re gonna be buddy-buddy in the bone ‘n’ up ‘til the gussie breaks formation.”
> You finally get a good glance at the opposition through the blizzard. Darker coloured pygmies wearing winter garb.
> You crack a shot off, and the first one drops. Copenhagen tips his head over the brim of the hole to look out.
> “A right clean one there! For a clusterfucked bundoo, it looks like we’re right well off!”
> The Warrant Officer checks their pocket watch.
> Another two shots through the blizzard, and your rifle pings. You go through the motions, pressing another strip into the Garand and sending her into battery.
> By the time you can raise it, you’ve had less than ample time to discover the impending bayonet charge from a group of ponies across the line.
> You manage to at least take a few shots into the incoming lance line of ponies with muskets and bayonets before fishing out your own bayonet to protect yourself.
>>
>>30738534

> With a glance to your right, you see that Copenhagen has procured a piping hot cup of tea out of whatever British pocket dimension's serving nowadays, balancing it in one hoof whilst you turn back to narrowly avoid a swinging rifle bayonet.
> “About right time for tea, it is! ‘pologies, dear ol’ chap, it’ll be just a moment. Care for a cup?”
> And so there you were, fighting a bunch of pygmy horses carrying muskets and bayonets with your own rifle and bayonet whilst your battle buddy drinks a cup of tea – all because the sarn’t told you to.
> Fuck this front in particular – you almost wish you were back to fighting through the landings.

So I noticed we don't have any Russian war horses, I've been able to find one named Lisette. She was owned by Peter the Great, the guy who turned Russia into an empire. and named after his favorite dog (who may have in turn been named for his favorite mistress).

Lisette saved Peter's life in a battle against Sweden when she was spooked by gunfire and moved suddenly causing the bullet to hit her saddle instead of Peter.

After that Peter cared for her the rest of her life and had her stuffed after she died.

I couldn't find any other notable Russian warhorses, although it seems that Czar Nicholas I actually had a royal horse cemetery.

Lisette reminds me a bit of Fluttershy. Timid, but has tons of patience for certain meanies.
>>
>>30730853
I suppose we could get away with that, but I contend it would work better to have similar, but not exactly the same, cutie marks. Sort of like the cmc's.

>>30738537
>>30732194
LOL, glad to see Copenhagen is getting greens. On the subject of cutie marks, I'd recommend something racing related for him, since he was a racehorse prior to military service. Maybe an old timey riding cap?

For Laili I'd recommend a golden apple for a cutie mark, that or a tub of popcorn.
>>
>>30740947
I agree, the cutie marks shouldn't be the exact same. I just wanted to mention that duplicate cutie marks exist.

Teddy Roosevelt's favorite horse, Bleistein

Can't confirm if it's the horse Roosevelt took to war, but it most likely was.

As far as the Czar's go, Peter the Great seems like one of better ones. Though it seems he had a pretty mean temper.

From what little I've been able to find about Lisette it seems Peter bought her knowing practically nothing about her because he thought she was pretty. She apparently gave her groomers a lot of trouble and would only eat if Peter himself fed her.

>Bleistein was gifted to Roosevelt by his friend George Bleistein. In gratitude, Roosevelt named the horse for his friend.

Huh, seems like this was a pretty common practice.

I just now saw this. That was great, I love that British nonsense.
>>
>Manehatten was already short on resources, the only thing keeping the city's manufacturing going was the rail line between it and Canterlot.
>And so the enemy drew up plans to sever that line.
>They marched for Hollow Shades, an otherwise unremarkable community near the midpoint of this line.
>Control of this town would allow the enemy to threaten Equestria's largest cities and it's most fertile farmlands.
>Equestria threw everything it could into the fight to hold this strategic location.
>It's best regiments.
>It's most advanced technology.
>It's wisest mages.
>It's fiercest warriors.
> . . .and the war horses also.
>The enemy was finally halted by a desperate defensive action on a hill just north of the rail line.
>The hill had no name before the war.
>Now it is known as Hill 509.
>>
>>30753188
>“I can't believe they not let us fight in battle!”
>The discontent obvious in Sergeant Reckless's tone as she, Nelson, and Brown Beauty found themselves on the road leading south to Hollow Shades and away from hill 509.
>Instead of taking part in the battle the three had been assigned to making supply runs between the hill and the Hollow Shades train station.
>“I think it was made fairly obvious that we need more time to acquaint ourselves with the equestrian military after our last bout of combat.” Brown Beauty replied from the front of their group.
>“We only burn off one of Shining Armor eyebrows, and it grow back.” Reckless sighed in frustration. “He should just get over, was long time ago.”
>“I thought it was three weeks ago.” Was Beauty's puzzled response. “But I never was good with time.”
>“I should be gutting commies at front line.”
>“I'm not entirely sure the enemy are communists, Sergeant.” Nelson politely chimed in.
>“Meh, they enemy, they commie.” reckless groused. “That not point. I marine, should be fighting, doing important thing, making difference!”
>>
>>30753195
>Nelson trotted up along side her and placed his foreleg on her withers and smiled at her reassuringly.
>He was completely oblivious to the way she was blushing.
>“Supply's are very important, Sergeant.” He said in a warm friendly voice. “Believe me we're making a big difference to the troops at that hill. We'll get the chance to prove ourselves in battle, just give it some time and I'm sure you'll be gutting enemies like fish soon enough.”
>Reckless laughed nervously “You always know right thing to say, Nelson.”
>Nelson gave her a friendly pat on the back before breaking contact.
>“The hill is under attack almost daily,” Nelson seemed to be thinking out loud “as such we may actually get the chance to fight on the next supply run. Hmm, we may be able to make one more supply run before the day is over.”
>He got quiet for a second.
>“Miss Beauty?” he spoke again “How long do you reason it will take us to return to the train station in Hollow Shades?”
>“Oh, are we going back to Hollow Shades?” Brown Beauty asked.
>“Eh, yes. Didn't you know that? You are leading the column after all.”
>“Oh, so I am.” she laughed in surprise before returning to the matter at hand “This road leads south and Hollow Shades is south of us so I suppose it stands to reason that we are headed to Hollow Shades.”
>“And, have you any idea how long we need to travel on it?”
>“Not a Clue.”
“Well,” Nelson's pleasant can-do attitude instantly returned to his voice “I suppose we'll arrive when we arrive.”
>>
>>30753202
>As they continued down the road Nelson and Brown Beauty began singing a song about a bold soldier getting married to a woman who's father did not approve.
>Sergeant Reckless, who didn't quite know the words, just hummed along with them.
>She found her mind drifting to Nelson.
>The way he seemed to have endless goodwill and patience even with the cruelest personalities.
>The way he met every challenge with optimism.
>The way he could overcome those challenges with such apparent ease and grace.
>The way his flanks looked so toned as he walked.
>Why was it so hard for her to approach him? She was a marine, she wasn't supposed to know the meaning of the word “fear”.
>When the song was finished Nelson suggested another song.
>Brown Beauty disliked that suggestion on account of the lyrics being “b-bawdy”.
>Nelson didn't understand why at first, but his eyes when wide as saucers once Beauty explained that the phrase “lied down” can have multiple meanings.
>>
>>30753208
>Reckless took a deep breath and collected her nerves.
>It was silly to be scared of talking to a stallion as non-threatening as Nelson.
>She was going to trot up to him and ask . . .
>No.
>She was going to tell that stallion that he was going to have dinner with her tonight.
>And he was gonna love it. End of story.
>She ran a hoof through her mane.
>She breathed into her hoof and smelled it.
>It smelled of moonshine and chili powder.
>Perfect!
>“Nelson, I want talk to you”
>“Yes Sergeant?”
>He turned to her with a warm smile.
>The very air around him seemed to sparkle for a moment.
>Nelson had done with two words and a smile what the entire communist army had failed to do.
>He had stopped Reckless in her tracks.
>“Are you alright Sergeant?” his face showing genuine concern for her.
>“Oh, yes I just . . .” she nervously tried to regain momentum.
>She couldn't chicken out now.
>“Wanted to ask about American revolution!”
>OK so she could chicken out now.
>Reckless tried to stitch together what she knew of American history from the marines into a sensible question.
>“What was it like when you face robot Hessian ninja army at battle of Little Bighorn?”
>To be fair, none of the marines in her unit were history professors.
>“Sergeant,” Nelson searched for a way to phrase his response, “I fear you may be suffering from some misconceptions about the revolution.”
>“I'll say” Brown Beauty interjected “She actually thinks I belonged to Paul Revere. Ha, Imagine that.”
>>
>>30753211
>There came an angry shout from up the road, “There you are!”
> They had arrived at the outskirts of Hollow Shades, and it seemed Shining Armor was there to personally welcome them back.
>“Hello, Shining armor.” Brown Beauty cheerfully answered, “And how are you?”
>“Do you know what you've done?” was all Shining could say as he closed the distance between them and himself.
>His uneven eyebrows furrowed.
>“We resupplied the troops on hill 509.” Brown Beauty answered without hesitation.
>“Oh you did, did you?” Shining said mirthlessly, “Tell me something, those troops, the ones you resupplied, were they at the bottom of the hill and did they have their artillery trained on the top of the hill?
>“They certainly did”
>“And were those troops, the ones you gave our supplies to that is, were they wearing black uniforms covered in spikes and scary gas masks?
>“Yes, a very peculiar regimental uniform, you should have a word with whoever is in command, it could cause confusion on the battlefield.”
>“Yeah, about the army you resupplied, did they happen to be marching under a banner that was black and red and had a mean looking skull on it,” Shining's eye twitched “A banner that looks nothing like the Equestrian flag!?”
>“Yeah, what point? You keep talking but don't make point.”
>“My point is” Shining lost all composure and yelled, “You idiots resupplied the enemy!”
>A moment passed.
>“You know,” Brown beauty mused pressing her hoof to her chin “I didn't think anything of it at the time but their commanding officer did speak with an accent I couldn't place.”
>>
>>30753218
>As Shining Armor prepared to further berate the three warhorses his attention was drawn to a courier galloping towards them.
>“Shining Armor,” the courier took a deep breath as he came to a halt next to the assembled ponies “hill 509 sends an urgent request for reinforcements.”
>“Oh let me guess,” Shining Armor could barely contain his anger “They're under attack from a freshly supplied enemy.”
>“The opposite, sir, they're on the offensive. Our forces noticed the enemy behaving weak and sickly as if they had been poisoned, we launched an attack to test them.”
>The courier seemed just as surprised to say it as the others were to hear it.
>“We've captured a portion of their army and whatever enemies are still fit enough to stand are in full retreat. If we commit our reserves to the fight we may be able to push the enemy all the way back to Neighagra Falls.”
>Shining Armor was dumbstruck for a moment before ordering the courier to relay the information to his command post with his orders to commit the reserves.
>After the courier had departed he returned his attention to the war horses.
>“What supplies were you carrying today?”
>“K-rations.”
>“K-rations? You were supposed to be carrying medical supplies, where'd you even get K-rations from? The Equestrian military hasn't used K-rations in years. If we had any they'd . . .”
>Shining Armor paused as he added it all up in his mind.
>“They'd be spoiled, and the supply depot would be throwing them out. Probably stacking them up near the train station you were supposed to get the medical supplies from. You delivered it to the enemy and gave them all food poisoning.”
>The war horses exchanged glances seemingly coming to the same conclusion all at once.
>“You can't prove we didn't plan it.”
>Shining Armor was ultimately forced award them medals for distinguished service.
>But it still didn't stop him from giving them three weeks KP duty.
