The show is like a case study in wasted potential and executive meddling. The massive fandom that existed from 2011-2013 built up a lot of hope for what the show could be, and with every subsequent episode their expectations were slowly chipped away. Every time a new story point that was a straightforward push for a new toy was introduced, people lost interest. Hasbro had gold in their hands and they gradually pissed it away. We finally got a pony movie coming out, and it's at least two years too late.

That's the thing that kills me, though. I work in marketing and one of the most important things you need to know is where your brand stands in regard to the public. Anyone with half a brain in 2012 should have been able to recognize that MLP was a phenomenon and to push for a movie based on the show (no, not EqG). Someone at Hasbro dropped the ball hard.

First it was Cadence and Shining armor coming out of literally nowhere with no prior explanation, but the wedding episode was at least good so it made up for it. Then it was Twilicorn, then EQG happened instead of a MLP movie, then it had 3 sequels, and Twilight lost Golden Oaks so toys could be sold. Then season 5 happened and it was more or less alright until the finale, then season 6 absolutely FUCKING SUCKED and now we're in season 7 waiting for the MLP movie while the shitty obnoxious Glimmer episodes remind me how far from the core of the show everything has drifted. Now I'm just sitting here wondering if I will ever be hyped for the show again.

When shows try to write out or hint at things with the plan of elaborating on it later it's very risky and can easily lead to the death of the show. Just look at what happened to adventure time. Also I can't really think of how they could really be introduced, An "I have a brother btw" would feel out-of-place and would ultimately have to lead no where unless it was the episode he was introduced... which was the exact way he was introduced.
