Show bombed in Japan. Not really much more to it. That they even do EQ for Netflix is bizarre, but they do those super cheap and don't even dub the songs.

Japan just has a surplus of cute media and MLP couldn't find a niche in any of it. Though the Tuesday at 7am timeslot on TV Tokyo probably didn't help them any. But if there WAS legit interest, the show would've found its way to satellite or Netflix or something. It just doesn't have a Japanese following.

And having Shigeru Chiba as Discord was pretty awesome to hear in MLP S2 in Japan.

Kinda sad it was literally left in a shit time slot to dry. And yeah,the songs not being translated and dubbed is pretty awful for EQG as I barely see any fan covers even for some songs like in Rainbow Rocks.

A Japanese Adagio singing some key songs would have made my day.

It honestly never should have been on TV Tokyo, a broadcast network. Western cartoons never get good coverage on broadcast networks and fair much better on satellite.

Transformers Prime and the Nick TMNT cartoon both aired on TV Tokyo/Aichi and got cancelled prematurely. But they managed to get satellite revivals where they've been treated much better (no time edits!).

MLP could find its audience if a Japanese satellite network picked them up, or even Japanese Netflix. But for some reason no one is biting beyond Equestria Girls. And even then, it doesn't look like the short film trilogy is going to get a Japanese release because it's not an actual movie like the others.

Yeah. I am not really all that knowledgable with Japanese broadcasting but having amazing timeslots can make or break any series. Even ones homemade in Japan.

Some franchises die because their time slot is competing with a much more popular show/product.

It's funny because they got Kemono Friends and that one positively exploded, MLP-style this year. Despite having a midnight time-slot.

There definitely was a massive audience waiting for MLP but they fucked something up along the way.

honestly all of my mental voices for the mane 6 are japanese except for twilight. not sure why. kyuubeishy is too perfect, and Chrysalis ends alot of her statements with sa at the end, which is perfect for her voice tone.

It depends what your standard is. Should a voice be translated into the most likely sort of a voice a character like that would have in that language OR should it be a direct analogue of the original voice? In Japanese Tara's deep-but-cute voice comes off as that of a school bully.
