If we go by general expectations, examples, and statistics, the majority of the userbase of /mlp/ as of now is composed of those whom joined or began watching the show during the 4th and 5th seasons and are therein caught by the similar allure of recent episodes.

In the same vein, oldfags are disillusioned by newer episodes due to both nostalgia and the understanding that the show has fallen in quality since the first and second seasons.

for example, i hopped on this ride while s2 was airing and i think s5 was the best overall season thus far. s7 has also been pretty damn strong.

See this is just shit brainlets regurgitate because they can't offer any substansitive reason as to why they like or dislike something. I'll grant you that there's a degree of subjectivity in the difference between a good episode and a very good episode but there are clear objective measures as to whether an episode, show, game or any piece of media is good or bad. Plot, tone, depth, soundtrack etc; all of this shit and others can be compared with one another to determine how episodes match up to one another. Basically all you're saying by claiming that everything is subjective between individual persons is that you literally cannot taste the difference between shit and sugar.

I think it's interesting what happened throughout the seasons. From season 2-5 we had a lot of passionate, experienced writers who knew what they were doing and they had just a bunch of randomly pitched ideas to write. It worked as a simple cartoon by good writers. After the obvious dip in season 6 where pretty much every veteran writer was gone, we now have season 7 which comparatively is doing much better.

The reason S7 is so good is because they seemed to mostly have done away with the idea that any random cartoon premise will work and instead have actually started asking the question "What episodes does the show actually need?" Almost every S7 premise expands upon something from the past and has a bunch of great continuity that makes the show progress in an interesting way. The unfortunate part is that we're still stuck with new writers so these great premises don't reach their full potential. In a way we're back to where we started on quality, but now we've got a different handicap than before.

when you make it clear its just your opinion then people are generally more receptive to discussions where they dont feel like they need to prove you wrong. when you make it sound like its an objective fact, then the discussion has that air of one of you has to be wrong.

ive seen plenty of discussions from people on either end go well as long as they both realize theyre arguing their own viewpoint rather than objectivity.
