Not necessarily a joke, just writers not getting Faust's vision.

And with later seasons, writers being influenced by fandom memes and opinions about the characters. For example, by some fans Pinkie Pie was regarded as a screaming retard. So after a few seasons she became nothing more than a screaming retard. While in the first season she was just hyper-active, there wasn't even much shouting or screeching. Also the cartoon physics were timed and used better, i.e. "only when it was funny".
