Old comic had multiple lawsuits brought up by the fact that Archie lost the contracts to a bunch of their staff, mixed with the fact that Archie pulled every non-Archie thing they had to get all hands on deck for CW's Riverdale, and it isn't a surprise at all that Sega was finally tired of their shit and wasn't happy that the comic they licensed out for some side money wasn't even on the market when it was time to renew.

They announced the end of 24 years with Archie and then almost instantly have IDW lined up and ready to print comics by next year. Sonic's getting his check cashed next year.

This can go two ways: one is IDW Sonic gets the same treatment as IDW MLP with B and C list writers, and little oversight and attention to cross-media continuity. SEGA puts up a veto against all the old Archie content and focuses on the games' main cast.

In a better timeline Ian Flynn and others will move from Archie to IDW, they get access to all characters SEGA holds copyright to, and the new influx of writers moves on to IDW MLP as a bonus.
