How does the feature system even work?
Is it view-based or is it rating-based?
>>
>>30561075
A story needs to get a secret amount of views and votes in an unknown amount of time for it to be featured.

The specifics have never been disclosed because then people would abuse the system.
>>
>>30561075

It's heat-based. Heat is a combination of upvotes and views, heavily weighted toward recently received ones. I don't know what the actual weightings are, though; knighty keeps that part hush-hush because he's afraid of people trying to game the system.

The system is also weighted against very short stories - I don't remember how short, but I want to say the penalty starts at 2 or 3 thousand words, and is greater the shorter the fic. This is to prevent people from shitting out a bunch of minimum-length stuff and clogging the feature box.

The bottom three slots are reserved for fanfics that have recently updated, and I think it uses a combination of total popularity and recency of update rather than heat.

Is there any excellent grimdark stories on Fimfiction about ponies falling into madness. But not Cupcakes or any same child fat shit.

Going through my bookshelves:

Probably some other Horse Voice stuff too, but that's the first one I see.

Not exactly "madness," but it hits the same buttons I think.

She does get better, though.

I was re-reading Audience of One last night and I had an idea for a Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon story.

Basically, the essence of Nightmare Moon comes back trying to tempt Luna into becoming one again. It tries to appeal to her insecurities, ego, and whatnot, but Luna puts her hoof down and resists her.

NMM, of course, doesn't give up, however she starts to get desperate, and it soon becomes obvious that she just wants to be one with Luna again. Cue romantic developments that end with Luna purifying the Nightmare through the power of love and maybe turning her into the Tantabus (only that this time it's not a dream being used to torment herself, but rather an assistant to protect the dreams that some stories seem to tackle)
>>
>>30561132
Read this one a while back and thought it was alright. It's written in the form of journal entries that follow Rarity as she tries to help Twilight uncover the nature of a weird object she found.

>But I want to ask the guy who has been slogging through the insanity: now that book 1 is done, what is by FAR your favorite part of the series thus far? And what is the most insane, if it's something completely different?
I flipped through the pastebin to make sure I wasn't missing anything important, but really nothing can top Star Swirl the Psycho and her Sweetie Belle sex golem.

Though, if you just want one thing to read, you should check out chapter 9 of Kind Hearts & Coronets
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/146048/9/kind-hearts-coronets/ix-just-an-illusion-we-believe
It's a fairly self-contained chapter from the side story about how Rarity and Silversteel first met.

>aag, chapter 26
NMM's host is dead, so she gets a new one. Also, the old host's identity is finally revealed: it's Orange Box. (Literally who?)

Spitfire is dead. There's a funeral and shit.

The Iranian fighter captain is not dead. He bitches at Mr. Taco for sending a bunch of untrained pepsis as pilots (they all got BTFO). By the way, the aircraft carrier they attacked is also not dead.

Lyra is almost dead. This is the most bullshit thing in the entire chapter because Lyra is cool and her near-fatal injury is 1000% contrived. During the battle, she hit the button for the orbital friendship cannon, and it worked but also electrocuted her for literally no reason. She's now in the hospital.

Non-Hitler Sunset (Champaigne's golem) is supposed to be dead, because Champaigne's worried about her getting out of control, but NHS resists because she's already turning into a real girl.

Chrysalis gets dead. Blood Armor takes over and all the changelings move to Saddle Arabia.

Luna fucks Robin. Celestia fucks Sam. Star Swirl fucks Rumble. Pip fucks Imago. Sweetie Belle is foreveralone but her friends (who are all married by the way) throw her a party to cheer her up.

I already talked about Luna and Robin's kid.

DJ and Rarity actually talk to each other, finally. Unfortunately Rarity is still fucking stupid. Among other things, she tries to insist that DJ send her kids to Not-Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, despite them obviously not being unicorns. Oh, and of course they'll have to adopt pony names, to fit in. DJ tells her to fuck off, obviously.

Equestria is part of NATO (despite not even being on the same planet as the North Atlantic), so Celestia requests help defending against future nightmare / changeling / taco attacks. They agree, but Megan Williams warns her that the secretary general of NATO is secretly part of an anti-pony group that was formed by a merger between the KKK and the Black Panthers.

IT'S FINALLY OVER for now at least
>>
>>30562272
>a merger between the KKK and the Black Panthers.
How is that supposed to have happened?
>>
>>30562178

Tyrant: (in ancient Greece) a ruler who seized power unconstitutionally or inherited such power.

I'd say that turning the current ruler of Equestria to stone and declaring oneself and one's sister supreme executive diarchs meets that definition, yes.
>>
>>30562766
That implies Equestria has a constitution. What if there's no legislature whatsoever, and Equestria is like a lion pack where the strongest, the alpha rules?
>>
>>30562461
>"Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because—what with trolls and dwarfs and so on—speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green." — Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad

>>
>>30562808
>Equestria is like a lion pack where the strongest, the alpha rules
I'm sure that must have been the case before the unification, but surely once the three tribes got together they must have figured out some sort of constitution to make things work between them before the sisters arrived.
>>
>>30562272
So, out of all of AAG thus far, what is your favorite scene, and what in your opinion is the most insane scene (if it's not the same as the first answer)?
>>
>>30563755
I think he already replied to that here: >>30562111
>>
>>30560415
>cause as much chaos as possible
What would be stopping Equestria from just kicking them out when it becomes clear they're only making the situation worse? Equestria holds pretty much all the cards when it comes to relations with the Empire (transportation, likely food imports, etc.) It certainly gives a big motivation for them to get a colonial empire going to break out from Equestria, but I feel like Cadance would be very careful about locking horns with the millenia old Principality with dozens of major industrial centers and a diarchy in control of the literal survival of the planet... at least until she had her colonies all in order.

>>30561075
It uses "heat," which is an algorithm that factors in likes/dislikes, comments, views, and the age of the story. The exact proportion those factors are used has not been revealed because of muh rigging.

One day I'll learn not to read spoilers when I haven't finished the fic in question..

I heard the movie wasn't as good as the book, so I haven't really given it a chance. Is it still worth watching even if it's worse?
>>
>>30568163
The movie is pretty good, even if the ending is different. The performances are great, off the top of my mind, the old man in the jail who teaches Desmond nails his part. It's been a while since I last re-watched it, but I think it's a pretty enjoyable movie nonetheless.

>>
>>30573294
Unless it has changed in the last few years, it's actually not a whole lot.
The bots usually just check it out right after it has been published, and you can get anywhere from twenty-five to around fifty views from them.
Or that's what I seem to remember, as I said it's been a while.

Posted one just now, and it got thirty-two hits after five minutes, and up to thirty-five after another five minutes. So the bot views drop off pretty quickly.

Hey, remember Not Twilight's Problem, that fic where everyone thinks Twilight is a stallion when she comes to Ponyville and where she's immediately shipped with Pinkie? It just updated and it's moving fast into the "so bad it's good" territory.

Twilight is frustrated that everybody still thinks she's a stallion even without her armor, telling Spike she tried "just about everything" (and no, I don't know how simply telling her friends wasn't the first thing on that list).

Then Twilight suffers a flashback to when Pinkie kissed her, Big Mac came around and wondered how come he can't see Twilight's dick ("When Ah kiss my fillyfriend, Ah can't help but go rock hard."), so he did the most reasonable thing - lifted her back leg to check out her nonexistant horsecock. He somehow missed her actual genitalia, but he didn't see a dangly thing so Mac assumedTwilight is using magic to hide it. End flashback.

Turns out Mac started telling every stallion he met about this spell. Cue another flashback. One day Twilight visited the hospital to give the sick foals some books when Doctor Horse called her into an empty office. He had a throbbing erection and wanted the spell from Twilight so he could walk around the hospital with it while checking out them hot nurse asses. Twilight did the most reasonable thing, and wrote down an illusion spell for him, even going as far as signing it. It also made Horse look a bit more feminine, but he liked that. End flashback.

Spike is having a rightful giggle. Twilight realizes that because the spell made Dr. Horse look more feminine, everyone is going to think that's the case with Twilight as well, so now nobody is going to believe her. Spike almost dies from laughing at this revelation.

I can't wait for the next chapter where Twilight starts flashing her horsepussy to everyone to prove she's a mare, because somehow someway, simply telling people and explaining the misunderstanding is still not an option.

Everyone's favorite author did a Q&A thing today. Here's the lineup for the next ~6 months:
>7DSJ, until the main series is done. This should be maybe 3-5 more chapters, by my estimate. WIZARD WAR SOON 30 AND A HORSE
>AAG side story #1: "The Breaking Straw" (>>30574000), about the public reaction to all the crazy shit that went down in AAG book 1
>AAG side story #2: "Lyra's Songbook" (not posted yet), about Lyra dealing with being stuck as a human forever which is still bullshit, by the way
>AAG book 2. This is supposedly happening in November but I figure January is more likely.

Aside from that, there was some info on the plans for Sterling (Luna's daughter) in AAG book 2 which actually sounded kind of promising. If it really turns out as advertised, then I might have to upgrade book 2 from AAG-tier ("induces severe brain damage") to 7DSJ-tier ("induces brain damage, but has a few redeeming qualities"). But then again, fool me once... (pic related)

>>
>>30568889
I have most of my stories on Pastebin. I'm slowly transferring them to Fimfiction.

https://www.fimfiction.net/user/224592/Waxworks
>>
I don't know about brain damage, but I feel like I come close with one fic (don't want to name names behind the author's back) where it seems like every chapter bends over backwards to make the protagonist's life hell and/or screw up his relationship with Twilight over the slightest thing (admittedly part of the point is probably that they're both new at this and not very stable, but the volatility does wear after a while), and dragged out further by the POV narration, to the point where I literally have to put down my iPad growling "of COURSE this is happening."

Like, I read the first chapter of it in a while earlier today- originally thinking to get back to 7DSJ, but then I thought, I've got time and how bad can it be?
>protag, Twilight and Rarity are in Canterlot for reasons
>Twilight sends protag off with her coin purse to get some food while they get settled in (at this point commenters who followed this from the beginning are already expecting trouble)
>gets to restaurant as Fancypants and Fleur de Lis are walking out, Fleur twirls around a bit and bumps into protag, knocking them both to the ground with herself on top
>FP and Fleur react as though protag assaulted her
>protag sees Twilight's bag knocked away, picks it up, Fleur screams that he's taking her bits b/c it looks just like hers (which protag knows b/c he sees it STILL ON HER SADDLEBAG)
>KO'd by guard & 2 hours dungeon
That's an eighth into the chapter.
I mean, he's released in short order when F&F realized they screwed up offscreen, but... is this the feel longtime AAG readers get? (I haven't minded the first 7 AAG chapters or so, apart from the M6 suddenly catfighting so Nightmare Moon can worf them, despite them being a task force supposed to be prepared for this specific thing.)

(Why am I still reading the first fic, you ask? Still kind of curious what will happen re:relationships, and I figure a chapter at a time is OK... in fact I read two more after that.)

I got burned out on it. I had started Ascend as a side thing I'd update once in a blue moon. Then it got really popular and I felt pressured to sink a lot of time into writing it. That was my first mistake.

My second was not doing something else once Ascend was done. I should have written another multichapter or done some oneshots, but instead went right into Regent and found it really unsatisfying writing once I got to Chapter 5. No motivation = no writing. It really doesn't help I can't look at a chapter of Ascend or Regent without wincing at it because of how shitty it reads to me.

I'm bad at writing after the death. I prefer the valiant fight up to the death, where the person involved dies valiantly for their principles or something.

Closest thing I've come to writing a story about death is a halfway thought out story where Pumpkin Cake has a fit and wishes to not live with her parents any more, but then she gets her wish and has to deal with the fact that going back to her parents is going to be much harder than wishing to be rid of them.

I just found out something.

In medieval times, it was usual to only work while the sun was out, then go to sleep at sundown, and get up at sunrise.

Of course, human beings don't normally sleep for 10~12 hours straight, so people back then typically slept in two periods during the night.

In between the first and second sleep the person would be awake about an hour or two to do the things people in medieval times usually did—pray, die of the plague, eat, drink, bury those who died of the plague—andm ore importantly, have sex. The French physician Laurent Joubert (1529-1581) even advised that couples have intercourse during this period, because “they have more enjoyment” and “do it better.”

http://www.medievalists.net/2016/01/how-did-people-sleep-in-the-middle-ages/

What is my point? Well, I just pictured an AU where Luna didn't become Nightmare Moon because she found a renewed (relewd?) purpose by essentially becoming a goddess of sex.

I mean, why not? Ponies slept through her night, but if they really did go to sleep as soon as the sun set, then you could apply the two-period sleep pattern to them and you suddenly have a one to two hour window where ponies are awake through the night, and you're a young princess keen on making the ponies appreciate your work. While not high on the list, encouraging married couples across Equestria to use that time for sex seems like a perfectly acceptable plan.

And if I ever write this, of course the story would be titled "Because the Night Belongs to Lovers"
>>
>>30579532
Luna turned into Nightmare Moon because Celestia was envious, so she made her days last longer. You know, sunrise shortly after 4 AM, light outside until 10 PM. Ponies worked more, got tired more, slept more during the night and fucked less.
>>
I've recently read this: www.fimfiction.net/story/18087/the-best-night-ever
The pacing was a little bit too slow towards the end, but it was still a pleasant read.

Anyway, what are some other good fics centered around time manipulation?
Ideally, is there anything about screwing around with time stop?
>>
>>30579565
That actually sounds like a plausible way for Celestia to go full Daybreaker.

Her little sister is leading a sexual revolution in Equestria, everypony is feeling more content and are fucking more in general, everyone appreciates nights more and Luna is now revered as a sexual goddess. Now that period in-between sleep is considered a sacred time devoted to fucking. She feels happy for her, but can't help feel that pang of jealousy deep in her heart—and her nethers—due to Luna's new appreciation. Eventually these small feelings pile up until she snaps and declares that ponies must fuck during daytime as well, and she'll make day last forever if she has to.

Cue: Elements of Harmony, and Celestia spends a sexually-frustrated millenia in the Sun.

>>30579583
>screwing around with time stop?
I believe there was a clopfic in the featured box not long ago where Twilight stopped time to have sex with immobile ponies.

After reading TBNE I fell in love with time loop fics, but sadly there aren't a lot of good ones.

Hard reset and its numerous sequels are maybe the most well known time loop series of fics if you haven't read it already: https://www.fimfiction.net/story/67362/hard-reset

A little loopy is pretty good: https://www.fimfiction.net/story/227246/a-little-loopy

And the cross-story version of The Best Night Ever in The Sweetie Chronicles is also a pretty good nod to the original: https://www.fimfiction.net/stories?q=sweetie+chronicles

Finally you can also read the sequel of TBNE (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/18256/this-platinum-crown), but it's in a pretty different style, not really time fuckery related anymore (though it has its fair share of stupidly powerful spells and 5 letter aliterations).
It can get pretty slow/long-winded at times, but I'd still recommend it overall.

Protagonist =/= main character, Anon. The protagonist of a story could be a lowly peasant while the main character and the driving force of the story is some noble hero. The story will be from the point of view of the peasant, then, not the hero.

Dude, what? The main character is the one from whose perspective the story is being told, and who gets the most "screentime" so to speak. If the story's told from the peasant's PoV, it doesn't matter if he's the hero or not - he's still the main character.

I mean, you CAN separate the protagonist from the main character; in most of Doyle's Holmes stories, for example, Sherlock is the protagonist but Watson is the main character. But the way you're describing the words is just wrong.

>>30586048
Yea, but they would be hidden and wouldn't get any exposure, forcing people to work harder to make actual quality.

Or maybe just make people bitch more on forums about how their story got ignored.

>but they would be hidden
Isn't that worse?
If a group of people dislike a story and proceed to hide it, then people who may like it won't be able to see it.
Honestly, people have to learn to ignore things they dislike.
>>
>>30586188
The system in place at Derpi currently is supposed to hide any image you "downvote", though, so any shitfic you haven't done so to would still be floating around, and I think the sorts of people who write such garbage would only be encouraged to see nothing but likes in the cases where they do receive them. Unless they were aware of the statistics on the number of people who hid their story, so it would be functionally the same as dislikes.

And the people bitching wouldn't be restricted to the folks whose stories got completely ignored. You would get people complaining about the dislike feature being removed, people complaining about people complaining about the dislike feature being removed, and I think there would be quite a few more wars in comment sections because of the people who want their disdain to be heard in some way. Depending on who you are, though, that might not be seen as such a bad thing.

>>30586408
I don't think it hides it from other people, just from the person that decides to hide it. Like a filter, but for a single story. I imagine such a feature wouldn't stop on the level of single stories, though, and include some means of just hiding specific writers from your feed.
>>
>>30586408
since I didnt follow the link, ill say it depends on how 'hiding' works.

If I downvote/hide something I dont like and it becomes hidden to me, well thats just fine. if i didnt like it then I'm not hurt by never seeing it again.

However if my downvote would cause it to become hidden from everyone else, that I could see being a problem.

Though I could see the benefit of having an anti-featurebox, where if enough people downvote in a short period of time it would generate anti-heat and that the shitfic would become hidden globally. because lets face it- horsefuckers have shitty taste, but if a bunch of them dislike something then the odds are pretty good that it was a shitty thing to begin with

AU where instead of a happy ending, the Thorax intro episode ends with Spike failing to convince everyone that Thorax is a good guy, and they must go on the run and form a new life for themselves in secret while Twilight searches tirelessly for the 'evil changeling that stole her son from her.'

I've probably mentioned it before, but due to recent developments I feel it's worth mentioning again. Despite the premise it actually spends a good while in slice of life territory as they establish and play out their new lives, but it's now barrelling headfirst toward the climax. If you can suspend disbelief with regard to Twilight going rather off the deep end with her blind racism, it's otherwise a great story.

Fanfiction can never be good because acknowledging that fan-created content can be good would mean coming to terms with the fact that we all are capable of creating things with value but choose not to do it due to a series of inner flaws and shortcomings of which we're too scared to accept.

Or, y'know, just shitposting.

I'm trying to think of a place where Sunset Shimmer and Rainbow Dash would wrestle, that's private.
>>
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/198685/the-wreck

This was good.

It's not often that I find a mystery story that's worth a read. If you discount the ones that want to emulate Doyle or Christie, there's even less. But this one is pretty entertaining.

A.K. Yearling is having a weird recurring dream about a shipwreck. She thinks it's tied to her writer's block, but can't know for sure, so she starts investigating abit about the history of that ship.

What follows is a nice and solid tale of investigations, twists, a bit of tension, and a satisfying reveal. It could really have used a bit more ambience and adding to the tension, but the pacing is already strong and even, so you never feel there are moments that drag on.

But yeah, 7/10. Go check it out, it's only 13k words long.

First I'd like to recommend what is pretty much my absolute favorite mlp-related fanfiction, The Tale of Lord Barleycorn.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/99168/the-tale-of-lord-barleycorn

It's a human in Equestria story that features a human named Jack disguised as a scarecrow, claiming to be "Lord Barleycorn" the spirit and lord of Autumn, and his efforts to introduce Halloween to Equestria and help a small town revitalize itself and draw others for the celebration with his deception at being a spirit. The town in question is not Ponyville like most would assume. But Hollow Shades, a small farming town that was built a bit into the Everfree forest that's essentially withering and dying thanks to various circumstances that the main character wants to try and fix.

For those who don't like stories with only OC characters, the mane six do come in eventually and are featured prominently when they do, though they don't outright steal the show and it's mostly about the human Jack and the Ponyville resident Carrot Top.

I really do mean it when I say it's my absolute favorite mlp-related story. Though I might be biased because it just hits all of the right notes for me personally.

Second, I'd like to find more stories like Lord Barleycorn. Stories with a very distinct Autumn and Halloween feel to it that doesn't just devolve into senseless grimdark.

The only thing dead is my self love.

I've just been stuck at a particular scene for the better part of a year. It got so bad that I actually went and wrote a whole in-between chapter which nobody read as I tried to figure out the logistics. The worst part is that I'm just itching to write the third act, but I know that jumping ahead and writing stuff for chapters 10~12 is only going to delay the next update even further.

I already have a solid outline of the chapter, so the only thing left for me to do is to push through and bleed all over the blank pages until I'm done with this.

There's no effort if you use a text-to-speech program. Where's the emotion? Even for shitty stories, I put effort into the emotion, if at least for comedic effect. And t-t-s programs are notorious for mispronouncing words.

Let me tell you about crossover together.

If you've opened the link, then you can see the fact that there's moon runes in the title and in the chapters themselves. In curiosity, I decided to translate them. They're basically just the title of the story and chapters in japanese.

But wait, if we use google's 'Detect language' feature, we can see that certain chapters actually use Chinese characters!

Why do I bring this up? It's obvious to me that EquestrianKirin is so lazy, that he decided to translate some of his chapters in chinese because they look vaguely Asian enough.

That, or he's so inept that he didn't bother to check if the translations of his chapters were actually in japanese or not.

I had high hopes for this story.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/93700/413-mulberry-lane-a-report-with-annotations-by-twilight-sparkle

Let's just say I ended up having a different experience.

This whole fic is built up as a dark horror about this mysterious house and all the unexplained phenomena which take place in it and, for the first half of the story it does a really great job about it. Seriously, I had a really sense of tension and curiosity as Twilight and her first crew go in that house and start analysing it. All the little unexplained things, all the mysteries piling on top of one another but still fitting somehow, until it reaches the point they must leave the house.

That was all great, and I had high hopes to see what Twilight would do now.

Then we go to the second expedition, where Twilight takes the rest of the M6 and... it all goes downhill.

The first big problem is that the rest of the girls were there just like any set of five background ponies could have been, or five ocs, or five blocks of wood with a nametag on them. Seriously, they have no impact on the plot and the house does not interact with them in any meaningful way.

It's not as though the house was creating tailored made challenges for the members of the first expedition, but in the second one, Twilight does all the work. Oh, sure, Rarity identifies that the composition of the plates and its hoofwork mean the house was centuries old, but we already knew that from the first expedition. Pinkie wants to check the bottomless pit in the den, but Twilight doesn't let her, so there's the end of that. AJ and Dash try to stop Twilight from entering a closet, but they don't stop her and she goes in anyway, Dash flew to the second floor, which put a stop to the ever-extending stairs, but we're never told why Twilight couldn't teleport to the second floor, I already forgot if Fluttershy did anything at all.
>>
Do I have to post in FiMFiction.net, because I got an AO3 account and I'd rather just use that.
>>
>>30618209
But hey, it's all worth it if the things they see this time around are still dread-inducing and mysterious as the first time, right?

Yeah! Yeah...

Listen, I know that in horror you can't explain everything or else you run the risk of ruining it, but the first expedition presented all these weird things happening and there was this feeling that there really was something behind it. Twilight's second expedition, however, is where the cracks start to show, and every new unexplained thing gives the impression of someone throwing spooky things at a wall and seeing what sticks.

We knew the dimensions of the rooms changed, yes, but now we're supposed to buy there's a never ending series of closets that even though the space gets smaller and the doors get larger, they still can be opened? One of the ponies in the painting was an alicorn? Is that why the painting didn't show the cutie mark? How is that related?

Oh, and the final slap in the face is this. Spoilers, in case you want to actually read this. When Twilight is in the final room with the, I assume, evil alicorn, the outside has been replaced by a painting of the street, because that was supposed to be a theme, I guess. But the painting showed the moon, and since it was a magical painting, that means Princess Luna was able to come in and rescue Twilight.

Did I seriously just read a literal deus ex machina ending? What the hell, the story didn't give that much attention to paintings until its last third, if you want to bullshit your way out of a corner like that, at least try to craft a decent foreshadowing.

All in all, this was just bad. It started great and promising, but it just works against itself and doesn't deliver in any front.

>>30618298
If it turns out I have to make it myself, I'm going to cry a river because I'm an absolute noob to programming.
>>
>>30618311
You could do it manually pretty easily. Install Stylish and add a custom stylesheet for fimfiction.net. Put in a bunch of lines like this:

[data-story="851"], [data-story-id="851"] { display: none; }
[data-story="45860"], [data-story-id="45860"] { display: none; }
[data-story="25148"], [data-story-id="25148"] { display: none; }

Add one line per story, replacing the numbers with the story ID. Be sure to replace both numbers - the first is for search results, and the second is for story cards in group listings.

This only affects what you see, not what the server sends. So if you do a search and the first 10 results the server finds are all stories you've hidden, you'll get what looks like an empty results page, but later pages may still have more stories.

What do you think would be an accurate estimate of Ponyville's population?
>>
>>30618552
100-300, but very social.
>>
>Finally have all afternoon to write
>Can't muster up energy to write

Damn it.
>>
>>30618552
>accurate estimate
No such thing.

I'd say you could get away with anything from five hundred to a few thousand, depending on how you portray it. The ideal population is whatever suits what you're writing without it directly contradicting the show itself. Which means that you cannot make it a tiny hamlet of fifty ponies, or a bustling metropolis, but between that you're freer than one might expect.

The show isn't primarily written with internal consistency in mind, which broadens your possibilities. For example one might argue that it makes no sense for a village the size of Ponyville to have a hospital, but then again the hospital isn't there because it makes in-universe sense for it to be there, but rather because the show has scenes that necessitate a hospital.

In a story, if the size of Ponyville is important, you can justify the hospital being there in different ways depending on your chosen vision of Ponyville. If the village in your mind is too small, you might say that the hospital is not there because Ponyville itself is large, but because of it's central location. Alternatively, if you think the population should be larger, you could say that although the village centre itself is small, there is a large surrounding rural area, meaning the region's total population is sizeable enough.

Honestly though, you rarely need to actually get into demographics. Just give us something that is consistent and feels believable. The specifics matter very little.

The Town Hall serves as a cetral axis for the whole town, from this point we can divide and group the blocks in concentric rings.

The innermost circle, which surrounds the Town Hall, is the town's centre, comprised of a mix of commerce and residential buildings. Since economic activities are the primary role of this area—notice the stores and the market—, the amount of ponies actually living here is rather low, with an estimated ratio of 3:7 of residence to commerce. The aerial view of Ponyville shows an estimate of 15 buildings in this area excluding the purely commercial ones.

The Layout of Ponyville can be grouped in Rings, however, these are not fully closed rings but rather arcs that adapt to the topography. This is why despite being in close proximity, the farm areas are not included in the inner rings, but more on them later.

What follows are the inner rings, divided here in A and B sectors. In these rings the ratio of residential housing to commercial increases to approximatedly 4:1. The nature of the commerce here also changes, rather than dealing with every day purchases, these are more specialised stores (think Rarity's Boutique or Davenport's Quills and Sofas) It's in this area where other types of buildings start popping up, usually relating to health, education, and security. Ponyville's Hospital is on the outskirts, so this isn't the case, and there isn't a police station or guard regiment stationed here, but we do see the schoolhouse in the outer edge of the Inner Ring A. The most densely parts of these rings reach 30 houses per loosely defined block.
>>
>>30619015

Once we reach the outer rings, the buildings become primarily residential. It's worth noting that while each "block" also is comprised of thirty houses, they're located apart from each other, and cover a larger area.

Then, we reach the expansion area of Ponyville, here we found the hospital as well as the farmlands. There is also a small residential presence in the southeast (Fluttershy's cottage and the small villa belonging to Rarity's parents)

Therefore, we can make an estimate of approximatedly 5 inhabited houses in the town's centre. 40 inhabited houses in the inner rings. 90 inhabited houses in the outer rings, and an indeterminate amount on the expansion area. Let's round it up to 140 houses total.

The US Census Bureau released a Summary file in 2012 wich determined an approximate of 2.5 persons per household in the country. Applying this rule to Ponyville we get an estimate of 350 ponies, not counting possible visitors or temporary residents.

Which is a lot to say about a murder mystery. The crossover tag is just there because this apparently lifts the entire concept from another series.

Point is, fifteen ponies are summoned to a mansion, they're trapped there by someone, and the only way to get out is to kill someone else and fool everyone else into believing you're innocent.

So far only one pony has died, and the culprit has been found.

I really like what I'm seeing. I'm yet to see if it'll devolve into utter insanity and/or edge, but I feel cautiously optimistic.

I like diving right in with some dialogue, then you start detailing the scene as the character/s keep talking. It especially helps to start fleshing out the character if they're an OC.

Going on for several paragraphs of narration, even if it's an AU, is usually a terrible idea since it gets really boring to read and interest is quickly lost.

Any discussion about the weather should only be used to set the tone of the story.
>>
>>30652665
well you know- unless the weather is actually relevant
>>
>>30652694

The weather almost certainly has to do with the tone of the story if it's relevant. Too many people talk about the weather for a whole few sentences, but then the weather never ends up being relevant.

"I'll always remember the storm that night, and just how little we cared."

"The sun was oppressive as we continued the march."

"So fierce was the downpour that looking out the window seemed too dangerous."
>>
>>30652714
Pretty much. If you're going to bother to talk about the weather then only do it if the weather is relevant to the plot, or it serves to set the mood of the scene. If you're only talking about how shiny/cloudy/rainy it is to pad out the wordcount, then don't bother.

I'm reminded of something George Carlin once said: "I've also grown weary of reading about clouds in a book. Doesn't this piss you off? You're reading a nice story, and suddenly the writer has to stop and describe the clouds. Who cares? I'll bet you anything I can write a decent novel, with a good, entertaining story, and never once mention the clouds. Really! Every book you read, if there's an outdoor scene, an open window, or even a door slightly ajar, the writer has to say, "As Bo and Velma walked along the shore, the clouds hung ponderously on the horizon like steel-gray, loosely formed gorilla turds." I'm not interested. Skip the clouds and get to the fucking. The only story I know of where clouds were important was Noah's Ark."
>>
>>30652694
But what are the chances of that happening in a world where the characters control the weather?
>>
>7dsj, book 4, chapter 26, part 1
Another chapter of buildup for the wizard war.

The 7M7 reappear. The SIREN kidnappers get back to their secret Canterlot base and dump them in a hole with the rest of the prisoners. For being super elite black ops types, the SIRENs don't seem to be very good at kidnapping. For starters, they put all the prisoners in the same place (except for Human Edition, who they stuffed into a broom closet somewhere so they can use her as leverage against her mom). They also did a poor job of searching the prisoners, since Ponk was able to hold onto a lighter (and heaven knows what else). And finally, they're keeping the prisoners in part of an abandoned subway tunnel. Now, I don't know about you guys, but most subway tunnels I've ever seen have had more than one exit. Fortunately, the SIRENs' boss is marginally less incompetent than they are, so it all works out in the end.

Meanwhile, Sunset and the Dazzlings are hauling ass up the interstate, doing 100 in a stolen car, on their way from the resort back to Canterlot. Their car breaks down, so they have to steal another one. Stealing is wrong mmkay, but it turns out that if you steal it from an out-of-business dealership and also loop their security feeds and hack into their computers, then grand theft auto is A-okay. Sunset and co resume hauling ass up the interstate, now doing 200 in a much nicer stolen car.

Edgelord McWerewolf sneaks around a bit, scoping out the SIREN HQ.

Zephyr sneaks around a bit, scoping out the SIREN HQ.

One of the seven remaining non-mutated SIRENs sneaks around a bit, scoping out the SIREN HQ. She saves those other two dumbasses from the bad guys and takes them back to the non-evil SIRENs' hotel room to plan. >7dsj, book 4, chapter 26, part 2
DR turns the Mean Girls into super-mutants. Then DR turns some pigeons into basilisks, which by the way un-stone all their victims when they die, and also are weak to phoenix fire. Finally, DR casts a timestop spell that stops the entire world so he do his ritual in peace. But he includes an exception for the SIRENs, because otherwise the upcoming epic battle would be over pretty quickly. Want an in-universe explanation? Tough shit, there isn't one. As far as DR knows, he's the only magic user on earth, and literally every person except himself and the SIRENs is timestopped for the duration of the spell. There is absolutely nothing for the SIRENs to defend against.

Sunset counters the timestop spell for herself and the Dazzlings, and they finally make it back to Canterlot. Despite claiming to be OOM all throughout this chapter, Sunset still has enough power to cast permanent anti-timestop enchantments, which she puts on the Dazzlings' belts. She also sends a letter to Twilight (Pony Edition) asking her to bring the Elements for backup. But Equestria is busy getting its shit wrecked by Tirek, so instead all she gets is Berry Sue and Snowflake the Phoenix.

Somewhere, the Mario 2 overworld music starts playing as a blind old man and a woman or mare? with blue eyes declare that "IT BEGINS". I'm really hoping Ms. Blue-Eyes is not Fausticorn, because that would be dumb. But she watches Sunset with "a maternal pride", and Faust is at the very least Sunset's grandmother by adoption.
>>

I've already forgotten eveything about 7dsj except that someone was sacrificing virgins to bring forth something evil, MCA sperged about the name of one of the organizations, and there was a subplot about date rape drugs.
>>
>>30654842
I can't even remember the date rape thing.
>>
>>30654842
>someone was sacrificing virgins to bring forth something evil
That's Divine Right. I think he's done with the virgin thing, except for Sunset Shimmer (Human Edition), who he plans to kill during the ritual itself because he really hates her mom, who is his cousin. The ritual itself should be starting any day now. It's supposed to grant him unlimited cosmic power, but we'll see how that goes.

>MCA sperged about the name of one of the organizations
"Les Scars", a made-up nickname for SCRS, the Canadian CIA. The SIRENs worked for them, but went rogue after Les Scars assassinated their beloved "Uncle Poutine".

>there was a subplot about date rape drugs
It's ancient history at this point - it was the first big subplot way back in book 1. Except it's come up again in Ponk's side story, because she got raped, got pregnant, and had an abortion (Without parental notification, but with the requirement that she watch one of those "informational" videos, in some bizarre mix of left-wing and right-wing abortion policies. And this in California of all places.) and she spends her entire side story being emo because she refuses to talk to anyone about it.

Depends on what kind of spoop you're going for.

There's two basic spoop stories, really:

There's a tribe gathered around a fire, and the medicine man is telling a story. He says 'The evil is out there in the darkness. It's the other tribe, it's a herd of wild animals, it's a monster in the night.'

Same scenario, except the medicine man points to his heart and says 'The evil is in here. It's the wickedness inside all of us.'

After choosing what basic story you want to tell, find a basic fear you want to tap into. Popular ones are fear of death, fear of loneliness, fear of obsolescence, fear of the unknown, fear of the loss of self, and several others.

Once you have your basic story structure and what kind of primal fear you want to tap into, the rest is just specifics.

The movie's theme can be boiled down to 'Hey, it's nice to have friends.' That's where the idea came from, really.
>>

It'd make for a great My Little Human spoof, actually

Because I have no idea what that is. Outside of my pony love, I am an unforgivable normie.

Also Loki could turn into a horse in Norse mythology. A girl horse. And Odin's 8-legged horse is his spawn. So there's that """"connection"""" as well.
>>
>>30664135
MLP goes great with mythology by default, you should know that. Be it Norse, Greek, Greko-Roman, Slavic, whatever, they are all unified by the common theme of horsefucking and debauchery.

Huh... I now realise I was going for a mix of both. I'll try to streamline it.

I talked about it a while ago and by a while ago I mean last year it's a story about Luna stumbling upon a recurring dream amongst several ponies and looking for the cause only to find out its some unspeakable eldritch abomination trying to escape Tartarus.

I was planning to contrast Luna's quest for the dream creature with that of a therapist treating the ponies who were afflicted by the creature.

a part

Well, color me surprised, I actually kind of enjoyed it.

It's definitely better than your usual fare and there's nothing major which pulled me out of the story. There are a few things that I think could be improved though.

The two main characters are... okay. They're not cringey and are somewhat likeable. The problem is that they barely have a personality. I've read the first chapter and I couldn't tell you much about them other than their colour schemes and that they're both outcasts. If you're going to tell the story from the point of view of two OC's, flesh them out as much as you can.

Also, you have a mystery tag, but so far there's nothing that will indicate a mystery, not in the story, and not in either of the descriptions, so if you're going to actually have a mystery, get around that sooner than later.

Other than that, yeah, I liked it. I'm glad to see you trying something more normal and grounded.

I wish you the best, B.

How do you like your clop?

I'm asking because I often find stories that devote too little time into the buildup, as though they were hurrying to get to the sex scenes. And what's worse, there are others which have a great and slow build up, only to end with a few paragraphs of actual sex and then they're done.

It's not often that I find a story with an adequate build up to sex ratio, and it's frustrating. I did read one recently, though.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/57313/lead-care-inspire

This fucking nails that balance. There's a good chunk of build up, and then it goes into lengthy descriptive action.

A few others come to mind, but they're more often the exception rather than the rule, and that's sad.
>>
I need some advice. So I'm trying to make a story where the protagonist's talent is stealth. Like Skyrim tier stealth.

I was just wondering if I should make it a 'Skyrim character turned pony' or just keep it normal.

The crossover option would be much easier to work with since I could just transform the character and go.
However, the other choice could potentially make the story better since I wouldn't end up having to make it a crossover just to explain the sneak abilities.
>>
>>30682345
What would the story be about? I doubt you're just going to write a series of SoL vignettes about the mc being stealthy. Though, if that's your aim, then you don't really need to justify why the character is stealthy.
>>
>>30682381
It's just going to be an adventure. Going around helping random families, stealing from nobles, killing bandits. Probably ending up getting caught in something bigger.
>>
>>30682431
Just make him his own character who wanted to be stealthy, there's more room for depth of characterization that way and you don't have to constrict yourself with the boundaries of the established game.

Plus, you can just blatantly copy it anyways and then change a few things.
>>
>>30678371
>I did some minor work on that server story a few days ago.
Hey, I remember that. I hope you get to finish that story.
>>
>>30681355
Like I said before; if I want romance, I want a long buildup and story to satisfy.
If I want to just get off, either skip over most of the buildup or put it into a separate chapter and let me get to the juicy stuff.
Which is why I fucking hate all those porn flash games that put a fucking timer on getting on with it. It's like Phillip K. Dick's The Blueballing.
>>
Has /fimfic/ ever riffed anything?
>>
>>30681355
I like it to be a part of a larger story and not be the sole focus of the story. I also require a high level of detail. If I wanted to imagine the sequence, I'd just create my own fantasy.

>>30682345
>Skyrim character turned pony
For what purpose? Seriously, why? It's a universe where literal magic exists. Use it. Why would you want to tie your plot into a massive knot by throwing in a crossover that has no real purpose to the story?
>>
>>30682345
Game mechanics don't translate well into prose fiction. Like what, he's going to level up and choose a perk? You will knock the readers right out of the story. I don't see any reason to drag Skyrim into it. He's a pony. His special talent is stealth. He's preternaturally stealthy. That's all folks need.

That is something I would actually read, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone with enough knowledge of history to craft a believeable and entertaining story with a human from a different period of ti me.

Plus, barely any fic deals with the language barrier between ponies and current humans, do you think any will deal with the language barrier between them and a human who speaks medieval English or Latin?

Not him. I remember darf and Cosmonaut having very good examples of drawn-out buildups with very descriptive smut. Especially that one Bon Bon fic by darf, focused mainly on her butt.

How do I write Applejack's accent?
>>
>>30704503
Dont. write her normally and let the readers mentally read it in her accent.
>>
>>30705672
Seconding this.
Really wanna make her sound southern? I reckon sentence structure and a good ol', well-placed countryism oughtta do the job.
>>
>>30704503
For the sake of all that is holy, don't. Seeing AJ's dialogue begin with "Ah" triggers me more than fanfic writers making Rarity say darling constantly.
>>

>>
>>30704503
https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/85926/accents

TL;DR: Never do "I=Ah" because she doesn't and keep in mind that how she talks will depend on the situation. Her enunciation of words (my/mah, them/'em) will change depending on her emotional state and the context of the scene.

>>30705702
>ol'
>oughtta
Anon, that's part of an accent.

>>30705672
>>30706050
Her accent is a big part of her character. If you go straight General American, she's going to sound way out of character and it'll throw things off. Same if you go overboard and make her sound like an inbred hick. The key is knowing what blend to use.
>>
>>30707425
>Anon, that's part of an accent.
I'm pretty sure that was the intent.

Like with everyone, you can do plenty of fun stuff with their accent and manner of speech. You could write AJ so that she overuses bogus countryisms whenever she gets all heinie harrumphed. Rarara could get all overly dismissive and patronizing, while Dash just temporarily forgets how to word things. It's all up to good characterization.
>>

I'm going to blatantly copypaste a few recommendations from the archives and there's nothing you can do about it.

For long fics with lots of character interactions that really let you get comfortable with the characters, I'd recommend:

A Delicate Balance http://www.fimfiction.net/story/31793/a-delicate-balance
Green http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19247/green
The Royal Ponyville Orchestra http://www.fimfiction.net/story/95013/

Other good romance fics with a slower, SoL-style pace:

The Gentle Nights: Audience of One http://www.fimfiction.net/story/213853/
The Travelling Tutor and the Librarian http://www.fimfiction.net/story/67042/
The Diamond in the Stars http://www.fimfiction.net/story/276745/

Also, this one, which I'm not sure how to characterize but is long-ish (74k words), has good characters, and makes for a pleasant read (cancerino can probably tell you more about it):

Her Majesty's Secret Service http://www.fimfiction.net/story/99526/

>Dreams and Disasters
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/89598/

Cadence realises that Rainbow Dash has a crush on Twilight, and since she doesn't have a kingdom to run or anything, Celestia and her send the two on a journey accross thinly veiled allusions to European countries, hoping the two of them get together.

>Eyes On You
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/7531/

One day, Twilight hears a cry of help in the forest, when she goes to invesitgate, she founds a battered Trixie being attacked by Timberwolves. What follows is the birth of a strong friendship, and perhaps something more. But, why has Trixie returned to Ponyville?
Well, she wants Twilight to be her partner in the Manehattan Magic Display, Equestria's most prestigious show magic expo.
This fic has, in my opinion, probably one of the most satisfying build-ups to a relationship I've read in ponyfic. Ant the tournament itself is very enjoyable.

I seriously considered reading this despite it being a self insert. I like PiE and it sounded like an okay premise. But then I checked the cover art and realized that the pony is apparently r63 anthro Shining Armor. It's a shame the trigger-warning tags aren't appropriately color-coded any more.

Do you still find the scenes that aroused you arousing? It might just be you've fapped to it so much, it's grown stale and boring.

I can usually only use the same scenario for a few months before I have to retire it for something new.
