They're ok. Consistently better than the main series so far, in that there are no real stinkers in them. At worst they're average. The fact that they have one good artist doing the whole series helps too.

the quality for writing is usual idw quality, it's like trying to enjoy What About Discord or Applejack's Day Off only because it's canon.

It's not. It doesn't matter if comic characters appear in the show, unless the events that happened in the comic are mentioned.
There has been a Pony Flash, but EqG is still not canon, for example, as nothing about it was ever mentioned in the show.
Anyway the comics are not that bad. I quite enjoyed them, so yeah you should give them a try.

Just because IDW wrote stories about characters that appear on the show doean't mean its canon. Hasbro just shown them future episode scripts. As long as the show doesn't write their stories based on IDW plotlines or with keeping the min mind, then they aren't canon.
