I was just about to bump the last thread and it died.
bumpo from 9

>>30481607
I find it really ironic that the thread died a single post after I thanked the bumpers for keeping the threads up.

It's no really problem though, that one was mostly finished anyway. And it made me update the pastebins.

>Pulling your lips away from the embrace, you keep your nose pressed against hers as you look into her eyes.
“I missed you.”
>”I think I missed you more.”
“Yes dear.”
>”Glad to see you still remember that phrase.”
>You give her a quick peck on the lips before returning to a more comfortable sitting position.
“So…”
>”So?”
“Oh never mind.”
>”What is it?”
“I’m just thinking too far ahead.”
>She nudges your leg.
>”Go on, what was it?”
“Well the first one isn’t even here yet, but I’m thinking that we should have more than just the one.”
>”Says you with the easy half of the job.”
“Hey, I have to deal with you during the pregnancy. And I can’t just run off to the military and avoid it now.”
>”Well… I guess that she would deserve a little sister or brother.”
“We don’t know that it’s a she yet.”
>”I can tell.”
“Yeah, I remember you forcing me to paint the room pink.”
>”I do wonder if she’ll take after me or you. I haven’t heard of many crystal ponies marrying pegasi.”
“Well if she’s lucky, she’ll get your looks.”
>”You use that line on all the mares you meet?”
“Only the ones I marry.”
>”Ones?”
“Well there was this one time in Las Pegasus…”
>”Choose your next words very carefully.”
>She jokes.
“Actually I’ve never been there. I’d recommend a vacation there, but it’s never really been that interested in that kind of stuff.”
>”Well what about me?”
“Are you into that?”
>”No.”
“Well there you go.”
>>
Alright, we're getting to a point that I should really be fully sober to type up, and I'm currently not very sober. So this may be it for the night
>>30482157
>”Do you want to take a vacation? Get away to help settle your mind?”
“No… I think I really just need to let myself ease back into life, get grounded. Spend some time with you, you know?”
>”I’ve got to head in for my shift at noon tomorrow, but I’ll try to get the next couple of days off.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
>”I know.”
“Thanks.”
>”Well, if I have to spend my day with patients, I’d rather be with one that I like.”
“Ha. Yeah… Look, I need to be serious for a moment. I’ve been alright for a long time now, and I’m honestly not sure how much longer that’ll last for. If you can’t get me to focus, I’ll probably end up somewhere quiet and away from people. Here it would probably be a park, to I’d head out of the city. I don’t want you running around trying to find me, just keep yourself safe- because the last thing I’d want is for you to wander through the woods and find a bear while looking for me.”
>”Thunder. Don’t think like that. I need you to focus on… focusing. I’m sorry! I just mean that if you’re saying that this is the best you’ve been recently… I don’t know. Maybe if you’re-“
“Winter”
>You cut her off.
“Maybe that this is going to last. And I really hope that being back with you was all that I needed too, but I just want you to be prepared if that isn’t the case.”
>She reaches over to grab your hoof.
>”We’ll get through this.”
“Thank you, I know we will… and thank you for believing me. It must be quite the story to hear.”
>”I know that you would do no less for me. And besides, our daughter needs a father who’s sane- so we’ve got plenty of time to sort you out.”
>You chuckle.
“Yeah… yeah.”
>>
(This wasn't the part I was taling about beign sober for)
>>30482164
>…
>You don’t know what Discord has been doing recently.
>Maybe it really was just him laying off of interacting with you.
>But, you feel a LOT differently tonight.
>You feel normal…
>As you reflect upon previous days, it’s almost like remembering a drunken haze.
>A bit clearer than being drunk, but the comparison is still the best way you can quantify it.
>It’s almost like opening your mind to the embodiment of chaos isn’t good for your sanity…
>To be completely honest, you haven’t acted so childish since your college days.
>Hell- it even got so bad that you, jokingly, told Tiara exactly what’s happening inside of your head.
>You never should have told her, even in jest, that Discord is currently inhabiting your mind.
>As you look back on recent interactions you’ve had with her, you realize that you should apologize.
>So, you knock on her door.
>”Come in.”
>You hear a muffled voice speak from the cabin.
>As you enter the room, she takes the time to comment:
>”You actually knocked… I’m impressed.”
>Approaching her desk, you motion towards an empty chair.
“May I?”
>”That’s- sure, go ahead.”
>As you settle into the low chair, you decide to speak.
“It’s come to my attention, Lady Tiara, that recently I’ve been acting rather… blunt to you.”
>”Are you okay?”
“To be honest for a moment, the nature of the mission has been getting to me. And I suppose I’ve been falling back to more subconscious impulses and, to be frank, childish mannerisms.”
>”No, really. Are you okay?”
>>
I'll be back tomorrow
>>30482336
“Tiara, as a rule I’ve always tried to hold myself to the highest of standards. Both to serve as an inspiration, and for personal reasons. And in the past weeks I’ve treated you in a completely disrespectful manner, and I’d like to apologize for that. While we do have our difference of opinion, that is no excuse for my actions and tone.”
>”You’re being serous, aren’t you?”
“I am.”
>”That’s… I’m not sure how to respond.”
“A response isn’t necessary. But I’d like you to see things from my perspective for a moment. This parasite, and the entity that spawned it, has taken over the pony that I raised as my own child. I’m the only one of my kind in this world, and Flurry is the only really family I have… she’s never been in actual danger before, and I’m not sure how to respond. And in my… uncertainty, I’ve been effectively taking my issues out on you. I might end up doing that again, but I promise that I’ll try not to.”
>”Look Anonymous. That’s a lot you just laid out, and I’m thankful that you would trust me with stuff that personal, but honestly…”
>She stops herself.
“Hmm?”
>And then she sighs.
>”Well I’m not getting out of it… Honestly, part of me enjoys the banter. I’m sure that you know what it’s like to have so many ponies serving as useless yes-men. The brutal honesty was, occasionally, a refresher.”
“I’ll keep that in mind Lady Tiara… Now, it is rather late so I’ll let you turn in.”
>>

>You sit worried, wondering about his intentions.
>After your experience with Gencer, you're a little wary about ponies like him.
>You both just sit there staring at each other.
>His tired eyes show annoyance at your noncompliance.
>He begins tapping his hoof.
>Waiting.
>Although concerned, you're not exactly in a good position to disobey.
>This is his home.
>His domain.
>Even if you did manage to sucker punch him, you'll be at a loss in direction.
>There's no
>You cautiously let your jaw slink open revealing your fangs.
>He stops his tapping.
>Did you just see a smile?
>It was brief, but it was there.
>But now it's gone.
>His exhausted expression is back as he fumbles with the box.
>With a little click, it swings open.
>Just as you feared, it's filled with various metal tools.
>Torture.
>This time is different though.
>The pegasus left your hooves unbound and body free.
>He must be extremely tired or just plain stupid.
>His hoof slowly hovers over all the shiny instruments of pain.
>You ready your hoof to strike him, but stop as his hoof hovers over one particular tool.
"A toothbrush?"
>Reaching into a little pouch on the roof of the case, he pulls out some toothpaste and spreads it across the bristles.
>He replies in a toneless and dead voice.
>"Wider please."
>>
>>30482977
Actually, that was taken at Kursk, not Stalingrad. You can tell because rivets in that set up were only used on Panzer IV variants produced after April of 1943

>After a couple hours of searching, you gave up.
>By then most of the celebrations had ended.
>At least you got to watch some fireworks here and there.
>Thunder was still unaccounted for.
>He’ll probably be okay.
>Most likely, he just went home to visit his wife, and somepony gave him a spiked drink along the way.
>Right now, he’s probably waking up with a hangover.
>As you finish showering, you start going through the effort to get your armor on.
>You’ve wasted enough time, and you need to get back to Canterlot.
>After taking this little break, you can get back to doing your job.
>A day or so to unwind before things start getting… bad.
>Cause the foreseeable future is filled with meetings and bureaucracy, and maybe dealing with the whole ‘minotaur apocalypse’ thing.
>Well, with your armor back on, you should probably head out.
>As you make towards the door, instinct kicks in and you expect your magic to open it for you.
>Bad idea!
>Wait…
>You didn’t just bash your head against it…
>It opened.
>Stepping out of the door frame, you try and focus on closing it with magic.
>A light aura briefly encompasses the door, but it fades out almost immediately.
>Hey though… that’s progress!

>As you awaken in your wife’s bed, you pull her sleeping body closer as she rests.
>The warmth reminds you of the desert sands.
>No problem with just laying here for a while.
>Maybe get a bit more sleep.
>…
>”You awake?”
>Winter whispers.
“Maybe.”
>”Still tired?”
“It was quite the night, but no. I think I’m fully rested.”
>”Well don’t get used to it, in a few months it’ll be problematic.”
“Oh I think I’ll be fine. I have military training in waiting.”
>She rolls over to look you in the eye.
>”Breakfast?”
“Want to head out for something?”
>”Well, I’m not a hugely skilled cook, but the little one can’t eat out for her entire childhood. Thankfully I have a willing test subject.”
“Who said anything about willing?”
>”You did when you said ‘I do.’ You probably didn’t catch it, but I sneaked in a vow about that.”
“Surrrre you did.”
>”Sure I did…”
>You sigh.
“Sure you did, dear.”
>…
>As you each finish the stack of homemade pancakes, Winter looks expectantly at you.
“Yes?”
>”Well?”
“What?”
>”What did you think? And be completely honest.”
“Completely honest?”
>”Completely.”
“You won’t use anything against me I you don’t like it?”
>>
>>30488785
>”That’s how criticism works.”
“Well, the first one you finished was a bit burnt on a side, but you fixed that. Overall they were pretty good. I’d have preferred a bit more salt in the mix though.”
>”What!”
“You just said that you wouldn’t turn anything around!”
>”No, it’s not about my cooking, it’s about the fact that you apparently like salty pancakes! Who does that?”
“That’s how my mom made always them.”
>”Eww.”
“Hey, you don’t know what you’re missing.”
>”Thunder, I’m sorry. I can handle you being a soldier and away for so long. I can handle the mental stress you’re going through. I can handle you showing up and telling me that you’ve quit your job. But THIS… salty pancakes… I just don’t think it’ll work between us.”
“Love you too.”
>”I’ll try it next time… but only for you.”
>She must notice a nearby clock, because she looks pretty shocked.
>”Is it that late already! I need to get ready for work.”
“Need any help.”
>”Just toss the dishes in the sink, I need to…”
>Her voice trails off as she rushes into another room.
>Then just stay out of her way.
>As you take the silverware and plates over to the sink, you scrape off the food scraps into the trash.
>Setting the dirty dishes down, you leave them in the sink.
>You’ll get to those later.
>>
More tomorrow
>>30488788
>Winter then comes back into the room as she is tying her mane into a bun.
>”Are you going to be okay on your own today?”
“Yeah, I’m still feeling fine.”
>”Are you sure?”
“Yes. Actually I think I’ll go out for a walk. I could use the fresh air, maybe head to the park, try and clear my head. You know?”
>”Great, if you need anything at all, you know where I work.”
>She stumbles as she tries to walk while using her front hooves to do her mane.
“You okay?”
>She managed to stop herself from falling, but her mane fell out and is looking a bit unkempt.
>”I’m fine, just need to slow down a bit.”
“Is there anything else I can do.”
>”No! I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to yell!”
“That’s okay… I think I’ll get out of your way and head on that walk now.”
>”Wait.”
>You pause as you turn.
>”Come here.”
>Walking over to Winter, she pulls you into a brief kiss.
>”Love you.”
“Winter… I’m no poet, but I’m hoping that before I die, I can find the words to truly express how much I love you.”
>”I know. And I feel the same way.”
>She kisses you for much longer this time.
>When it ends, you speak first.
“I’ll be waiting for you once your shift ends.”
>”Keep the lights on.”
>With that, you decide you’ve kept her for too long.
>Time for some fresh air.
>If you can keep you cool, that is.

>As you went through the streets, you didn’t exactly make good time.
>More than one pony that saw you took the time to thank you for ordering the celebration last night.
>And by ‘more than one pony’ you mean ‘pretty much every pony that saw you.’
>One of these days you need to learn how to cut a conversation with the average citizen short.
>Or maybe not…
>Maybe taking the time to speak to them is what ruling is all about.
>Or at least what it should be about.
>Well, at least you’re (finally here)
>The train yard.
>As you enter the station, you walk by the crowds.
>Ponies from all avenues of life are waiting for their trains.
>Crystal ponies are the majority, though you see earth ponies, pegasi, unicorns, and even a donkey or two.
>Or was that a mule?
>No matter, there’s no line so you step forward to get a ticket.
“Noon express for Canterlot, please.”
>”Your highness!”
>And this is your cue to sigh.
“Yes…”
>”If you’d like we could set up a private engine to take a car for you.”
“No need to go through any fuss, the normal express will be fine.”
>”Well at least let us offer you a complimentary VIP package.”
“Please, there’s no need for any of that. Let me pay like any other customer.”
>”… If you insist.”
“Yes, I do. And don’t get me wrong, I’m flattered at the offer. I just don’t want anypony going out of their way for me.”
>You set a pouch of bits on the counter, and take the ticket.
“Thank you.”
>As you leave, you could swear you hear the teller speaking to the pony next to her.
>Something like:
>”She’s so modest.”
>As you exit the station and head out to the platform, you see that your train is loading.
>Good timing.
>Walking over to the nearest car, you stop yourself before entering.
>Because you hear a loud explosion in the distance towards the city.
>A very familiar explosion.
>Less than an ‘explosion’ and more of a thundering pulse.
“Oh… shit.”

>A squirrel is running up a tree.
>And that’s okay.
>You’re not fully focused on it.
>It’s just a squirrel after all.
>You walk by, and see some ducks in a pond.
>And that’s okay too.
>You deeply inhale through your nose.
>Oh you feel so… free.
>Because you’re home.
>No more fighting…
>You’re where you belong- with your family.
>But…
>You will need a job…
>Maybe you could speak to some of the local farmers.
>Having a local pegasi to help with weather could be a lot more efficient than waiting for Cloudsdale’s weather to reach this far north.
>Or police?
>No, that’s too similar to soldiering.
>You need to leave all of that behind you.
>All of it.
>Construction might work, but unless you get really lucky, and you mean really, you probably won’t advance that far.
>Although…
>You still are pretty young.
>Not even in your mid-twenties… you could take some time to find yourself.
>The new you, that is.
>Yeah…
>That might just-
>Your thoughts get cut off as you hear a loud… noise coming from the southeast.
>What was that?
>It was almost like an explosion, but different…
>More of a loud thump instead of a proper boom.
>You’ve never heard anything quite like it.
>It wasn’t anywhere near home, or the hospital.
>But, you have only one thing in mind.
>Getting home to make sure Winter is okay.

"UhhhhhACK"
>He shoves both his hooves into your a-gap mouth.
>"Now let's see here, never actually had a changeling patient before."
>His tired tone changes to more of a peppy talk.
>You notice his cutie mark is a toothbrush and a sickle probe crossed making an X.
>Next to it is a tattoo of a dark pair of glasses.
>He moves the candle closer to get some better lighting.
>"Well it's like what HQ says, 'There's a first time for everything, and you're all going to have a lot of firsts.'"
>HQ? The MID?
>"So, where are you from?"
>Seriously?
>Is he really trying to have a conversation while he's inside your mouth?
>As he brushes away at your molars, he patently awaits your reply.
>His stare fixed on his work.
>Giving your best effort you try and give out a response.
"Uhh, werr I aktuarry am nok shure. Kiyda chus came tu be. Id a rong chory really."
>You take a moment to rest.
>Who knew talking during a dental appointment makes the jaw super sore?
"Well yochee, id allstarted in Yakyakischan where-"
>He cuts you off abruptly as he begins working on your fangs.
>"Oh that's nice, bet it was really pleasant growing up there."
>You're not sure if he's listening or not.
>Even if you grew up in Yakyakistan you bet it would be anything but pleasant.
>"My hometown was the little fishing village called New Horseleans, so small it's not even on the map yet. However if you take the train south from Canterlot you can see it marked as the very last destination. Rinse"
>He brings out a little plastic cup with water letting you relive yourself of the taste of toothpaste.
>Giving a sigh of relief, you begin to get up thinking the ordeal is over.
>"Not yet my bug friend."

>For looking so tired he sure has a lot of energy.
>"Buddy when was the last time you flossed? It looked all built up in there."
>You've never flossed.
>Taking the sickle probe he begins scraping at the base of your teeth.
>The scraping makes you flinch a bit, but you try and stay calm so he can finish his work.
>"You know, we were expecting you sooner, but better late than never."
>You were expected?
>He must be thinking you're somepony else.
>"When we got word they were sending an expert, I never thought the expert would actually BE a changeling. Hehehehe."
>His chuckle goes on a little too long.
>"That should do it. How you feel?"
>Surprisingly you feel refreshed.
>Getting drugged and forcibly getting your teeth cleaned wasn't so great though.
>Things could've been worse.
"Good, thank you."
>"You're welcome! Now...let's get to work."
>His peppy step transforms back into a more groggy tone.
>He lends you a hoof and leads you down the right hallway.

>The entire country has been fully mobilized for the past decade, and partially mobilized the decade before.
>Here in the Crystal Empire, there’s a five thousand man strong garrison that’s present in case the yaks decide to try anything.
>Beyond that, you’d guess that there’s at least ten to fifteen thousand local veterans that are still of the proper age to rejoin.
>Then another thirty to forty thousand middle-aged veterans that could fight if the need for manpower was high enough.
>And who knows how many young adults would be able to work as new recruits.
>Right now, you’re setting down in one of the military encampments along the wall.
>And by that, you mean that you’ve landed on the wall itself to overlook the camp.

“Alright, listen up! I need pegasi and runners getting word out! We need men on the ground at the site of the explosion! And have the police start evacuating civilians away from the area.”
>You should probably tell them…
“Now I know you probably won’t believe it, but that blast was the sound of a rift appearing from Tartarus. Pretty soon, monsters are going to start spilling out. If there are big lizards with frills on their backs, have unicorns hit them with magic- aim for the fleshy bits under the shoulders.”
>As you scan the soldiers below, you don’t see many unicorns or pegasi.
>Great.
“Any fliers need to get to ground zero as soon as possible. If they can break out of the pit they’re coming from, we’ve already lost. ALSO, I need explosives at the site: if we blow up the tunnel, then it should stop them.”
>And they probably think you’re crazy right about now.
“YOU HEARD ME PONIES! MOVE!”
>That got them moving.
>It’s amazing how much people will do if you act like you have authority.
>Although, you kind of DO have authority so that theory might be a bit strained…

Yeah I switched because professional history was killing my enthusiasm for the subject. Also you'd be surprised how many history majors (even while in their final year) actually know jack and shit about the subject and have no idea how to actually research. Then among the academia all of the focus nowadays is about niche topics or interests because what used to be commonly accepted was 'white man' history. I'd guess that at least a third of the students at my university are only history majors because we don't have any gender/race studies as majors. Overall I got fed up with it and transferred over to STEM

So Thing, I don't know if it was you or a different writefag that mentioned Wild Turkey, but either way, have you tried it? I'm sipping Wild Turkey Rye right now (I went to 4 different liquor stores just to find it, and they didn't even have what I was really looking for, which was 101 rye). Anyway, you seem to be a bit of a drink connoisseur (or maybe just a drunk-ass), so that's why I decided to blog at you about it.

Sorry I'm sitting down to write pretty late tonight. I lost track of time playing a city builder game. fuck traffic No matter what I get out tonight, I promise that I'll get some time during the afternoon tomorrow to write.

Thankfully my school doesn't have any violent liberals. We have a very vocal and influential faction of progressives (mainly in social sciences and the arts (but that's pretty universal right now)), but being a small-medium sized local college most of the people are more centrist and/or sane.
>>30515165
I asked for whiskey/scotch/bourbon recommendations last thread and that one ended up on my list. I've just about finished my fifth of Jim Beam (and by that I mean I'm finishing it tonight), so depending on liquor store availability it will be that or a scotch .

I'm also dangerously low on vodka so that trip will probably be in the morning.

>From the air, you were able to see it.
>Well, you can’t see the hole itself, but you can see the ruined buildings.
>A couple houses were completely leveled, and nearby walls that faced the blast have crumbled away.
>In the streets you can see a crowd forming to see what happened, only being kept away by emergency services.
>The police are trying to keep ponies away from the damaged zones, and clearing way for medical carriages.
>You set down as close to the pit as you can.
>This one looks a bit different.
>Instead of going straight down, it looks like it’s at a thirty or so degree angle.
>From the south east, you’d guess.
>No creatures though.
>Yet.
>”Ma’am, you need to- oh, your majesty.”
>You look over to the police officer that probably though you were just a pegasi.
“Listen, you need to start evacuating the area and quickly. There’s about to be a huge threat to the civilian population.”
>”What do you-“
“Just trust me.”
>The policeman turns to speak to some other officers, and they start yelling at the crowds to move back.
>As they start moving civilians away and knocking on doors to evacuate residents, you see some pegasi soldiers set down.
>You count seven of them.
“Set up a perimeter around the pit, and if anything comes out aim for the pink areas under their shoulders!”
>The roads are going to be packed, but soon enough soldiers are going to start arriving.
>You just hope they get here before the creatures do.
>You can’t see any movement from the hole, but the sun doesn’t have a good angle to illuminate it.
>The thing popped right in the middle of a street in a residential area.
>The houses on either side were completely leveled.
>>
>>30516570
>Pretty much all that remains is the back wall to each.
>And even then, you think they were two stories, but the walls that remain are only six or so feet high.
>The debris is pretty intact though.
>You can see appliances like refrigerators still intact.
>Beaten up and dented, but still intact.
>There’s an oven, though the door has been blown off.
>And nothing looks charred.
>Not an explosion made from combustion, but sheer force.
>Magic maybe.
>Magic probably.
>What’s that?
>You look over to the soldiers.
“Hold here.”
>Flying over the rubble of one of the houses, you see something familiar.
>Reaching to free it from the dusty rubble, you shake off some of the debris.
>That’s an officer’s cap.
>It’s coated in dust, and the emblem on the front has been blown away from it.
>You can’t tell if it belonged to a soldier, police officer, or maybe a firepony.
>It’s a bit oddly shaped though.
>Whomever it belonged to must have had a big head.
>”Princess!”
>You drop the hat and look over to the soldier who yelled towards you.
>Flying back to the pit you look down it.
“You see something?”
>”No, over there.”
>He points towards a small group of soldiers that force their way through the crowds in the distance.
>It’s a small group though.
>They get though the crowds and begin rushing over.
>You see a couple of horns on heads.
>One, two…
>Four in total.
>And a dozen or so crystal ponies.
“Where’s everypony else?”
>Their Sergeant responds:
>”Caught up on the main roads, our captain sent out squads to find ways through back alleys to avoid traffic.”
“Well get those unicorns front and center.”
>He whistles at his men and yells:
>”You heard the princess, up there pretty boys!”
>Your count was right.
“Alright, how long can you keep up sustained fire?”
>You get no reply, nut the looks on their faces aren’t reassuring.
“Great… Well get up here and pray that we get the reinforcements or explosives that we need.”
>>
I'll be back tomorrow.
>>30516575
>One of the pegasi then yells over to you:
>“We’ve got movement!”
“Get up there, and hit ‘em! Pure magic, no fancy effects, right under their shoulders.”
>You rush over to the mouth of the pit to verify.
>It’s pretty dark down there, but you can definitely see movement down there.
>Looking over to the unicorns who are forming up, you offer a suggestion.
“Now wait until you can properly acquire the target. If you hit them anywhere other than the exposed bit, the attack won’t have any real effect.”
>You hear a shaky voice yell out:
>”Umm. Your Highness, MA’AM. What are we even fighting?”
“The minotaurs call them demons from hell, I call them creatures from Tartarus. Not a big difference there, but the bottom line is that they want nothing more than to eat every pony in this city. Now are you all going to let them?”
>You hear the soldiers yell out in unison:
>”NO MA’AM.”
“Now I hope you’ve all been keeping up with your training while posted here, cause you’re all that stands in their way right now!”
>Alright, if the unicorns even hit a couple, it will still send bodies sliding down to clog the tunnel.
>But if that fails, you’ll have to hold the line the old fashioned way.
>These things are quick though, it took them a fraction of the time to reach the surface as last time.
>Maybe there was a tunnel in Tartarus closer to the surface here so they have less distance to climb.
>Or they can more easily climb the incline rather than coming straight up.
>Or both.
>Either way, you know that-
>You train of thought stops.
>Not because you got a clear visual on the creatures.
>But because you heard another loud blast in the distance, one that was identical to the first.

>Ponies are rushing around trying to figure out what’s happening.
>Police and military personnel are trying to coordinate to get people clear, but when so many people are trying to learn what happened and check on family, there’s only so much they can do.
>You’re not sure if that was an attack or just some accident, but neither does anypony else.
>You just need to get home.
>Wait.
>You’re doing it again.

>Reaching Winter’s neighborhood, you see that the streets are much clearer.
>The zone you were in earlier must have been closer to the blast site.
>And your wife lives in a bit of a lower density zone.
>But even here you can see the neighbors out in front of their homes, looking around to see what’s happened.
>You yell over to one of them.
“Hey, do you have the time?”
>”Quarter past noon. What the hay was that?”
>Winter’s shift started AT noon, so she’s probably at work right now.
>And the hospital she works at was nowhere near the explosion.
>Good.
“I don’t know, there was an explosion, but your guess is as good as mine.”
>You should check the house just to make sure she didn’t take the day off or run extremely late.
>Because you don’t want to run all the way over to the hospital just to find out that she isn’t there.
>No Thunder.
>You don’t want to FLY all the way over there.
>You’re still a few houses away from Winter’s, so you start jogging over to the front door.
>As you get closer, you-
>You see the ground tear in front of you, and you are shot back through the air from the blast.
>As the noise catches up, your eardrums are almost shattered from it.
>Your back impacts something, and the interior of a house appears into your vision.
>The last thing you see before hitting a wall and getting knocked out is the broken window you just went through.

>"I'm sorry about our first encounter."
>He takes a hoof and brushes through his beard.
>"Injecting you with Acetazolamide and Diazepam doesn't make for the greatest first impression. It was for safety purposes."
"I can sort of understand."
>You can't think of any justification as to why he did what he did.
>A simple tap on the shoulder or even a, 'hello' would've sufficed.
>Although, your head does feel better.
"Besides, of all the different creatures I've met, at least with you I got a free teeth cleansing."
>He gives an exhale out of his nostrils.
>The typical nice way of saying your joke is amusing.
>Just not laugh worthy.
>As you both walk down the hallway, the silence begins to get to you.
>The constant tap of your hooves off the stone floor echo down the dimly lit corridor.
>"So...changeling huh?"
>He must be a little uncomfortable also.
"Apparently."
>"So...how's it like...being...that?"
>What?
"It's...fine."
>He wipes away what you assume is sleep in his eyes.
>Maybe he'll be more comfortable talking about himself.
"So, how does a small town pegasus end of getting work all the way out here?"
>Surprisingly he opens up easily.
>Strange for a spy.
>He talks about growing up fishing for seaweed with his father, getting his cutie mark by brushing his younger sisters single tooth, and his time serving during the first and second Coastal Wars.
>"...and after the battle, I was pulled aside by a couple MP's for a private investigation. They led me into a tent with two well dressed ponies sitting across from me in fold out chairs. I thought I was going to get an award or something. Nope. They said due to my service I was 'interesting' and wanted to know if I wanted to 'expand' my career. Crazy world."
>>
>>30521178
>He seems more relaxed.
>"You know to be honest, we were skeptical of you even coming."
"Really now?"
>"After Seesaw and I found that Arabian spy, we thought Equestria was overrun."
>So they do have Roxelana!
>Now's a good time to try and pry some info out.
>Hopefully you can find where these creeps are keeping Roxelana and you both can get out of here.
>You have no interest in whatever work this guy has.
>Especially if it's for the MI-
>Did he just say overrun?
"Wait...overrun? By who?"
>He turns around confused.
>"By the Arabs! In case you haven't noticed, my country is at war! Did the agency find you living in some cave?"
>So they don't know the war is already over.
>Makes sense.
>With headquarters gone, all the agents on missions have no idea they are out of the job.
>Or more importantly are now fugitives.
>You might be able to use this to your advantage.
>"Why do you think we are even out here?!"
>Well the plan was find some genetically modified frozen war bug hive, destroy it, then book it through the Forbidden Jungle south with Roxelana into the sunset.
>It all seemed so simple minus the complicated parts.
"Uh..."
>"Did they even debrief you?"
>You try and think of an acceptable answer.
"All I was told was, er, come to these coordinates and I would be, um, contacted?"
>He gives a snort and rolls his eyes.
>"Ugh, typical secretive bureaucratic bull-honky, but understandable with the context."
>Bull-honky.
>That's a new one.
"And what context might that be?"
>"Let me show you."
>You both finally come to the end of the hallway.
>A little wooden door blocks your path.
>A dark green aurora radiates through the bottom of the door.
>"We're here."
>Taking a key from his pocket he unlocks the door and opens it.

>Compared to the usual changeling cocoons this one seemed a little bigger.
>It hangs from the low ceiling like a punching bag and reconnects to the floor.
>Getting closer to investigate, parts of the cocoon become transparent.
>The clear front reveling it empty and hollow.
"Interesting."
>"That's not it."
>He moves past you and stands next to a makeshift surgery table.
>On it a bed sheet covers a mound.
>Peaking out from underneath the covers, the tip of a dark wing hangs limply off the side of the table.
>He notices it too and puts it back in its place.
>"This is what we need you for."
>Pulling down the sheet, a distorted head appears.
>Not exactly pony nor changeling.
>A disgusting amalgamation of flesh and bone.
>It had griffon talons for hooves with three long claws etching out.
>What you thought was it's head is actually an extension of the body.
>No neck.
>Just one solid mass.

>It's a circular orifice.
>A mouth.
>>
>>30529448
>Hundreds of razor sharp teeth line the walls of it's mouth while five fangs are spread equally around with ridges at the bottom of each one..
>All extending outward more like claws for grabbing and pulling in rather than penetrating.
>On its back two charcoal black wings extend.
>You touch the one that was previously hanging.
>It feels leathery.
>Thicker.
>A sharp contrast to your thin chitin wings.
>At their base, between them a small sail spine extends.
>Probably helps with air maneuverability.
>Prodding more it's pink tongue slinks out like a snake.
"This is horrifying."
>"That's just the tip of this iceberg."
>He takes the prodding stick and pulls open a little incision already made at the top of its 'head'.
>Motioning his hoof he beckons you to look.
>"That's his brain."
>Looking inside the beast's head you see the soft squishy mesh of fat.
>Something is sticking out of it though.
>Taking a closer look you see that it's shinny.

>Gah, your head.
>And your back.
>And your ears are still ringing.
>As you struggle to get on your hooves, you see that you’ve broken through somepony’s living room.
>How long were you out for?
>And why is it so quiet outside?
>While you start to move over to the broken window, you flex out your wings.
>Damn that hurts!
>You think your left wing ended up taking the majority of the impact.
>It doesn’t feel broken, but you really doubt that you’ll be able to fly on it.
>Looking outside, you can’t see anypony in the streets.
>Makes sense they’d run away from the explosion.
>But why are you alive?
>You’re not complaining, but you’re more or less fine while you can see a house across the street that’s completely demolished.
>The only reason you’re still standing might be because the glass broke your impact slightly.
>But that explosion was definitely not from an explosive.
>No fire, just force.
>Like a sonic boom shattered the ground.
>Wait…
>That’s Winter’s house!
>Rather than looking for a door to the house you’ve been thrown into, you hop through the window.
>Not paying attention the broken glass that’s scratching you, you start sprinting over.
>The lawn is completely covered in rubble.
>Is that the bed?
>Or what’s left of it…
>>
>>30530238
>The walls are completely gone, and-
>What is that?
>Pretty much the entire center of the house has been replaced by a circular tunnel going into the ground.
>You’ve never seen anything like this.
>How far down does that go?
>The smoothness of the sides is pretty unnatural.
>It looks like the tunnel goes off to the southeast.
>Somewhere…
>Winter!
>You need to get to the hospital.
>Right now, you can only pray that she wasn’t home.
>You can’t see any blood, or a body.
>But you were pretty far from the house when it went up, and-
>No, don’t think like that Thunder.
>She’s just at work.
>You take a moment to work out a route in your head before starting to run down the road.
>After passing a few houses, you-
>Holy…
>That’s a body.
>It’s a block down from the tunnel, but it’s been completely shredded.
>Several bits are missing…
>Like it’s been torn apart by an animal.
>What in the ever loving-
>There’s another!
>Just as mangled as the previous.
>This one looks like a mare.
>You think.
>It’s hard to tell.
>Oh shit.
>You really hope the third one you come across was just shredded a lot.
>Because there’s a very small amount of flesh and bone left.
>As you run even faster, you see more bodies lining the streets.
>What happened here?
>Only one thing matters right now.
>You need to get Winter far away.
>>
>>30530242
>…
>The entire way to the hospital was littered with bodies.
>Need to move faster!
>If only your damn wing would work.
>You tried to fly, but before getting a few feet you face planted into the ground.
>So you’re stuck to running.
>But there it is!
>You can see the hospital reaching above the nearby buildings.
>You start turning down the streets to get to its entrance.
>As you reach the street it’s on, you end up slamming into a pony’s back.
>That hurt.
>And it looks like the entire street is full of soldiers facing the hospital.
>As you look again to the soldier, you realize that the pain was caused from the pony’s armor.
>The soldier looks at you to yell.
>”Get out of here civilian! I thought the cops got all you out of the area.”
>Civilian.
>You did quit…
“My wife works there!”
>The armored pony looks over to a few others.
>”Corporal, Private. Get this civie out of here!”
“No, you don’t understand-“
>”Now, soldiers!”
>>
>>30530248
>…
“Captain! What’s the status on the second pit?”
>”Soldiers and engineers are on the way with the payload!”
“What’s keeping them so long? The scouts said that nothing else was coming out of it!”
>”It’s a big payload ma’am, and we don’t have the pegasi to spare to carry it.”
“How many do we have here?”
>”A dozen or so, but the air support hasn’t let us get into the hospital yet.”
>The creatures are smarter than you’d guess.
>They’re actually holding down the entrances to the building, stopping your men from getting in.
>But why?
>Could be one big diversion.
>But you need to stop the horde now, before they can spread out again.
“Captain, get those pegasi over here! Even the scouts, I need every flier and now.”
>”Yes Ma’am!”
>…
“Alright people, we’re going in fast and low, hitting the second floor to take the pressure off the first. If they regroup on the a higher floor, we’ll rinse and repeat with the third.”
>The civilians have been barricading off the upper levels, but pretty much none of them can simply fly down.
>If the streets weren’t in such chaos, you could get some ladders in.
>There were the fire ladders, but the creatures tried to climb them.
>Turns out that their weight collapsed them.
>>
Alright, this is it for the night, I'll be back tomorrow If anything leaves you with questions, don't worry. They'll all be answered at some point

>As you look to the fliers, you see a dozen proper armored soldiers, and another dozen lightly equipped scouts and messengers.
>It’ll have to do.
>The Crystal Empire is great with manpower, but right now you need pegasi and unicorns, not infantry.
>Well… without all the infantry you wouldn’t have been able to box in the creatures so quickly.
>Okay, so it’s been a long while since the second pit came up.
>That may be it.
>If you’re very very lucky, the first was just a diversion for the second.
>The creatures came up pretty quickly from the first, but almost immediately from the second.
>If this was just a diversion, then it might be over.
>The quantity does trouble you though.
>Back with the minotaurs, the creatures were constantly pouring out of the pit.
>Here only a small wave came out of each.
>If you’ve only gleaned one thing from this entire debacle, it’s that the creatures are a lot smarter than you assumed.
>Or whatever is behind it is a lot smarter than you assumed.

>Glancing down the hall each way, you see a few more creatures to both directions.
>Left or right?
>Left.
>You start flying as quickly as you can towards the nearest creature.
>At first, you go high- almost hitting the ceiling.
>But as you reach the target, you swerve low to stab at its weak point.
>This time, you fully stop yourself instead of flying past your target and losing grasp of your weapon.
>As you free the blade, you get it free just in time to block an incoming swipe from the next creature’s claw.
>The blade goes deep between two of its clawed toes.
>As the creature then moves it’s head to bite at you, it gets rushed by a pegasi- who thrusts his spear right on target.
>So far, so good.

To the wild turkey anon, I'd definitely say that I approve, but it's definitely a liquor that I'd prefer to space out and enjoy over a longer period (as opposed to (pretty much any) vodka for example, which I routinely chug)

Not sure if I'm just starting to get a taste for whiskey, or if it's bourbon specifically that I'm enjoying. Either way, thanks to everyone who gave a recommendation, I promise I'll try to get to most of them.
