STORY OF THE BLANKS

The story felt pretty incoherent, especially in the game; some mystery is good for horror games but it still has to make sense to be worth something.
My 2c

Donitz actually worked on the Blanks2. He had the code and story for it, but he was lacking the 16-bit graphics.
He gave me the files way back in summer 2011, and I read the text files full of dialogue and guidelines. It wasn't very good.

This. I didn't really get the backstory. Playing it for the first time in five years, a little bit more clarifying of stuff like who the pony AB follows initially is and hinting at what the dark curse of the town was would've made it better.

Having said that though I still find it to be a fun little game I can knock out in 15 minutes and it makes me a bit nostalgic; a time capsule of a time when the Everfree Forest was a place of mystery and horror.

The gameplay was nonexistant. You just went around areas and had to only find 2 objects and solve 1 puzzle. The interact option doesn't do much aside from talking to npcs.

I miss the everfree forest.

I miss the everfree, even if in the cartoon show it was a boring swamp/jungle mix without any real charm, locations, magic, darkness, good soundtrack, story, use, focus.

It was kind of shit, really.

It seems like the ponies of the town either kick out ponies with marks or there's some artifact that keeps them from getting marks, because an artifact was mentioned but never shown?

I liked the Derpy one better, simply because it was a real horror game. Story of the Blanks seems to an uncompleted test game more focused on an unfinished story attempt.

It's just speculation but based on the in game dialogue the safest bet is to say that since they were sequestered in the forest and when Ruby got her mark they saw it as a plague and so decided to kill her

I see what you mean and it's a good point but personally I like SOTB so much more because it actually does a ton of world building in a super short amount of time which is really impressive, and leaves a ton of potential to work with it further and explore new ideas. That mainly comes from the game's brevity and the mysterious nature Donitz purposefully gave the game; it leaves you with way more questions than it does answers and the more you think about it the more questions you can start to ask

The game was so unclear with what it was trying to accomplish that I didn't even understand what the message at the end really meant "throughout equestria relics of the past lay forgotten, awaiting recognition" maybe awaiting discovery not recognition. Donitz can barely express himself properly.

The unnofficial theory for what the backstory was about was this:
Ruby found the ruby gem and got her magnifying glass cutie mark, which resulted in her being thrown in the fireplace and became a ghost.

For some reason Ruby lures Applebloom to her place of death, like an idiot. Ruby and the rest also seem to be completely unaware of the curse, her own death, what's going on. Except for Mitta.

"The curse" has absolutely no hints to what happened except that them murdering one of their own caused it. But not any details.

S2E6 had something in a book called cutie pox (still sounds retarded and childish just like Flim and Flam) which might have hinted at a cutie mark defect going wrong, spreading and killing everyone.

But again a cool story that never happened just like in Hearts and Hooves Day(quit it with the shit names). Where Twilight shows a book on how to make the love potion, which also shows some princess alicorn that brewed the potion to make the prince fall in love with her. (Possibly Chrysalis before getting corrupted)

Didn't the CMC fuck up the potion and accidentally brew a love poision instead? Anyways what is certain is that cutie pox is absolutely a real thing, seeing as yknow, Applebloom her self got it

We haven't even seen ponies have the common cold, let alone magical horse-related diseases like a problem with their cutie marks.

So Donitz just inserting in a bunch of blank flanks and making them consider cutie marks a bad thing out of nowhere was really incoherent. I wonder what they would have did to Applebloom if she did have her cutie mark.

Zecora seemed to know that in that specific night the blanks were going to appear, but she was too cryptic.
