It wasn't quite a costume, and it wasn't quite a perfectly elegant gown. It was a fad, and it was quite pretty.

Yet, I had to admit to myself, it wasn't suitable for many occasions. If I were invited to the Gala, mayhaps it would be appropriate. Thank heavens the "wings" were a detachable accessory, connected to that brooch in Her Majesty's honor. It made me feel like I myself was a work of art, but I couldn't wear it many places even without the winged sun.

I placed it in my closet with care, and closed the folding, mirrored door. I needed this.

I sighed. I really needed this.

I look into the mirror at my sea-green eyes. I always found it fascinating how I could never catch myself looking away. One of the magical properties of mirrors.

My eyes drifted down to the reflection of my cutie mark. A simple shooting star, breaking up in the atmosphere. I felt like that now. My employer had an effect like the sun on a comet: her intensity turns ponies into shards of who they were. She thinks her micromanagement melts away the dross, but it is the good and healthy parts she burns away. I have seniority amongst the admin staff of her fifty-horsepower business, not because I've climbed the ranks through merit, but because all the long timers, all the smart ponies, left long ago.

These thoughts were too depressing. I needed to go out. I tossed on a simple necklace, put in my matching earrings, and headed for The Commons.

The sunlight was refreshingly warm in the autumn air, and I closed my eyes to soak in her rays. The grass of the hillocks around the castle, The Commons, was breathing new life into me. I didn't have to work there, I knew, I could quit at any time. My parents wouldn't approve, but then, they weren't being ground into a fine paste by venomous frowns daily.

No, I wasn't thinking about that. I ambled onward.

Overhead, a flight of young pegasi rolled with the wind. I wondered, briefly, what it would be like to be a pegasus for real. Everypony has a pegasus dream at some point, but I bet actually using wings to fly would be more of a chore. Always exercising; you rarely see a fat pegasus.

Now, fat unicorns were another matter. There were spells, of course, to bind the belly or to enhance the fat burning, but not everycorn could cast them. Take Snowflake Unique, for example. She was a stage actress and an opera singer, but her weight had hindered her career.

That dressmaker had used a Buffalo tribal dress inspired by the very mountain Canterlot sat upon, the Canterhorn. I thought it was a bit telling to dress that mountain of pony flesh as, well, a mountain, but some how it worked.

Yet Ms Unique was a generally happy pony. I wondered what it would take to get me back to that point. Why did past me have to be the happy version of me?

I stopped, and then I simply rolled over onto the grass, hooves to my chest. I was tired. I was just so tired of all of this.

And then, the sun moved. I shivered. It was sunset already? I felt rested. Had I fallen asleep here on The Commons, where anypony could see my belly?

"I can't imagine that position does your back any good," said the pony standing over me.

I flinched and got upright, then immediately bowed. "Your Majesty!" I offered.

She nodded to me, and I rose. "It's days like this that I'm glad for the peace Equestria currently enjoys, that a mare can lay on her back under my sun with no foulness or monsters ruining her." She sighed.

I noticed her guards hanging back some ways. I looked at her, then to the castle. What does one do in the presence of royalty? Should I complement her on the palace? The sunrise, or the sunset?

She chuckled. "Be still, my little pony. Just be. You need not fill the air." She watched her own sunset.

As did I.

A minute passed, as the sun fell orange, slowly, toward the horizon. Then it stopped.

I looked up at her, inquiringly.

She knelt and lay in the grass. It was awkward for me for all of five seconds, and then she said, "Lay here."

I did.

"Feel my corona." She lit her horn, a golden glow. I lit mine, and cautiously did as she asked.

The sun was there. I gasped. The sun was in her tender grasp, ready and yearning to sink below the horizon. And I Knew the sun. It was a warm thing, with joy and energy and a pull inexorably downward. She was sharing this sunset with me.

"It used to take unicorns in concert to move the sun," she said, "but since I got my Mark, it has liked me the best."

I thought of Princess Celestia as a gangly-legged blank-flank. It seemed wrong, like imagining your mother's first kiss.

She smiled. "Give it a push toward its rest."

I pushed the sun, and it moved. Down, to dusk, it sank under my guidance. I closed my eyes as I felt a sigh of relief come from the great orb; darkness embraced the land.

Behind us, the moon rose, casting the silver light in reflection.

She stood. "Be at peace." Her great wings opened, and with a massive flap, she was away toward the palace. Her pegasus guards followed her into the air.

I was alone on this part of The Commons. And yet, the memory of the sun, just moments ago, made me feel not so alone after all.

And I had hope. Somehow, for the first time in nearly a year, I could feel hope. I was a comet, shining in reflection of the sun, not a falling star burning to a crisp. I headed toward home.

I opened the closet door once more. The wings and brooch weren't so gaudy after all. Maybe I'd wear this on the day I quit...

The music is there to make a scene more impactful, or to help emphasize what a character is feeling.

Background characters are just that: characters in the background. Season 1 didn't need unique ones in every episode, and -- as I said in a previous post -- had the most consistency of any season in terms of writing quality. They could be left out entirely and I wouldn't give a shit.

Face it: background characters in recent seasons are just for pandering or fap-fuel and nothing more.

Having copy paste background characters is in no way better than having unique ones, the fact that they used to do this was a common criticism of the show (albeit not a serious one) and was fodder for humor more than anything
