Part of it is the personality that we've seen--and yes, I know, she doesn't get spoken lines much. But she comes across as wise, intelligent, patient, kind, with poise and grace and occasionally she shows a sense of humor of which I approve.

Part of it is that Nicole Oliver's voice has always made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I loved her as Farseer Taldeer, too--and so did /tg/, resulting in things like "Love Can Bloom."

And part of it is Lauren Faust's character design for her.

I never sexualized an animated character before. The long legs, the long neck, those gorgeous eyes--the "normal" ponies, with some exceptions like Fleur de Lis and Sassy Saddles, have stubby limbs and big round faces and seem to me to be drawn deliberately to look a little childlike (and remember the Primary Demographic).

Celestia, with her long limbs and slightly longer face, is a woman, and all woman, in a world of little girls. She's everything that's beautiful about horses, and swans, and deer, or maybe gazelles, all mashed together, and somehow it works. It's like "supernormal stimulus," when a bird that has a spotted egg gets a great big wooden ball painted in spots in its nest, and goes nuts over what is to us an obviously phony egg to the point of ignoring the real thing. Celestia is like that for me. She's not even humanoid (though Principal Celestia from EqG is certainly yummy), has hooves instead of feet, and she is just yum, yum, yummy. I want to devour her. I want to rub my face in her soft, smooth hair. I want to touch her mane. I want to taste her sweat. I want to fuck her silly. I want to fuck that cool poise right out of her and make her scream with raw, primal pleasure. I want to throw her over my shoulder and carry her away--which I couldn't do, because horse. But I look at her and I want to. I never imagined an animated character could be so beautiful.

And yeah, I'm a horrible person, yeah, I need help, thanks, I'd never have guessed.

The exact size of the ponies in Equestria isn't exactly certain. There are charts, based on an "eight foot candy cane" shown in one scene early on, but I figure a lot of what we see in the show is caricatures and cartoony exaggeration. Some people feel the ordinary ponies are not much bigger than cats, and so on. I like to think we are looking at "ordinary ponies" that are mostly around smallish Shetland pony/Argentine Falabella pony sized, see image. Celestia is somewhat larger, in my mind's eye--a petite young adult female of the smallest breeds that are designated as "horses" and not "ponies." She's a slender little Arabian or maybe thoroughbred mare, at least in size--15 hands at the shoulder, 800 pounds or so. Luna and Cadence are a little smaller. In my head, for which I have nothing to support other than the fact that I find it pleasing to imagine her this way, plus Rarity is way bigger than her cat, not cat-sized at all.

Well... Season 1 Celestia was an aloof, mysterious, inscrutable living Sun-Goddess. Like the Pharaohs, she had one foot in the mundane world and one world in the divine. She called the others "my little ponies," because she wasn't one of them--she was something fundamentally different. She was as gentle and compassionate as she could be, but she wasn't like them.

Then S2 came along and she started getting one-shotted on a regular basis by nonentities she should have been able to reduce to a smoking scorch mark on the marble tile floors with a dirty look and a thought, and she started doing really, really questionable things, starting in Lesson Zero, when she didn't strip Twilight of her Element and her magic after she spent an entire episode demonstrating that she wasn't worthy of them, nor stable enough to wield them without unacceptable risk. Then forgiving Discord, Sunset Shimmer, and the rest of the rogues' gallery of villains she should have turned into stone and THEN sent to the moon.

People have pretty accurate estimates. A typical mare is about a metre tall while Celestia is about 4'8. Keep in mind fans had similar estimates before the eight foot candy cane using apples and then we have shots like this.

I am up for the challenge. Part of the appeal for me, I think--and this one didn't occur to me after I thought about it a while--is that there is something very exciting, very fascinating, to me, about the fantasy of an intelligent nonhuman lover. The idea of slowly learning how to touch her, how to please her, learning about her non-human responses and her non-human nervous system, learning how to make her squeal with joy, just where to touch her, that is extremely exciting to me. And yes, I'd be more than willing to fist her to give her pleasure, as well as performing ponylingus upon her Royal Person. I would hope that if I did a good job, she would consider reciprocating--via magic, or by using her pretty, pretty mouth. That cute, feminine little muzzle was just made for blowjobs, I think.

Does anyone else think Lauren Faust intended to evoke Taoist symbolism with the Princesses?

Sunbutt, being not only a sun goddess but also symbolically everypone's magical mommy, would be the one I'd expect, if I were reading the Equestrian version of The Golden Bough, to be the one venerated at fertility and harvest festivals: the divine living life-giving Sun, who brings warmth, spring, summer, the harvest, and new life.

Whereas Luna is the bringer of night, darkness, winter, and death, though not herself a personification of death. She might even be a psychopomp (being who guides the souls of the dead to the afterlife); the pones still offer sacrifices to her "Nightmare Moon" aspect after the harvest, when the life-giving crops have died for another year and the cold winds blow. Notice how much skull/skeleton imagery there is associated with Nightmare Night. It's clearly the pone version of Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

So I'd expect, from a comparative mythology perspective, Sunbutt to be the intended recipient of sacrifices, possibly even human–er, pone–sacrifices at the spring and autumn solstice.

Moonbutt is the goddess of death, or rather her Nightmare Moon aspect is. She doesn't get so much in the way of sacrifices, though it's also possible that a death-cult may have grown up around her in centuries past, one that, like the Thuggee cult of Kali, sacrificed sentients to her. I doubt either one took that very well or let it go on very long, though.

Do they still read Fraser in comparative mythology classes? Or is The Golden Bough no longer sufficiently PC to be acceptable in higher education?

Celestia is yang: action, motion, warmth, light, life, creation, fertility, growth, the sun, the sky, the mountain peak, hot dry wind, order

Well--it didn't have to be that way. There is a lot of fanfiction out there that had the kind of worldbuilding we hoped the show's writers would go for, and some of them managed to do it without de-powering Sunbutt or making her less the Goddess and Chessmistress we saw in Season 1.

I never took the Two Sisters' defeats as bad worldbuilding. They're veritable goddesses, but they exist in a world filled with other gods and god-level monsters. Even regular ponies are sort of like minor deities in the same vein of nymphs or kami.

Well, my headcanon, if we want to talk about my autistic imaginings, and about what is or isn't plausible when we compare it to what we see on the show, is that the equines are subject to estrus, unless it's magically controlled somehow--pills or potions or spells, just like birth control stuff here. Even when I try to write stories, I have to create implausible and contrived situations in order to explain why Best Princess is spending any significant amount of time in the company of humans in the first place.

Maybe she's visiting Earth, either as a diplomat or as an accidental result of rolling a natural "1" when trying to do a teleportation spell. And when I write these stories, because I am a horrible person, she ends up getting injured somehow--maybe hit by a bus, maybe an assassination attempt (you know it'd happen--winged talking animal appears, lots of crazies would fight over who got to kill the "demon"). And after the surgery, which would be horrible for everyone involved, someone taking care of her would begin to develop feelings for her. But never speak to her of them, because that could only be a burden for her, because it can never be.

My writing is horrible and I am ashamed of it and every time I start writing something like this I delete it, because it is bad and horrible and I feel bad for writing it.

Cause Luna got like, 5 episodes where she was the main attraction. Celestia got ONE, and had to share it with Luna and fucking Glimmer, so kinda not even one, more like a half. Of course, that's the modern situation, the reason why Luna was given that much attention in the first place was because more vocal fans, and possibly more numerous, though that I can't confirm.

I love both Princesses, really I do.

I guess Luna has gotten a number of episodes of her own, and gets more exposure on the show. In seven seasons we haven't seen Sunbutt much at all. If we see her, she's a background character, or she's reciting exposition to Purplesmart and sending her on her next adventure. We don't really get to see her being herself, or her downtime. We're not even sure about her personality, beyond that she comes across as pretty nice most of the time and having a sense of humor that runs to gentle pranks.

The Princesses don't know who he is either, or why he's there. But he does know he's PISSED. Chrysalis was his "pet" for a few years, but he thought she was plotting against him and threw her out. Some scenes recounted from Chrysalis's perspective show, surprisingly, that she wasn't--he had chained her up and tortured her until she was completely psychologically broken and dependent on him for everything. He's just paranoid and a psycho.
