Most drawfags here can tell it was copied from reference so it looks stiff as fuck. While there's nothing wrong with using reference it isn't the "right way" to use reference. At some point the artist needs to do some drawings from imagination to test their knowledge and explore what they can do.
>>
>>30432842
The flower looks stiff to me, but not Twilight. Mind explaining in more detail how she is stiff?

How does a complete newfag to digital art, like me, even start learning how to draw ponies on a Chromebook? I tried using gimp OS, but it didn't work; and Google sabotages everything related to Firefox.
I've been starting off using https://pixlr.com/editor/ but it's all online, meaning that I lose anything I didn't save when the wifi gives out.
Do I need a new, real, computer? I can't start until I figure out what medium to use.
>>
>>30432842
I used references for the eyes and nostril, but not the pose itself.
>>
>>30432965
Stiffness is hard to explain because a lot of it is based on "feeling." You "feel" out the form, you "feel" it being stiff.
That said, in some cases, a lot of it has to do with construction being followed too closely, too. Like the line of action was never kept in mind, and no room was left for things to be bent, exaggerated, etc. to give the illusion of motion.

If you look at that Twilight, does the picture tell you she went to smell the flowers? Or does it look more like a statue left in there?

>>30433286
You start with pen and paper.
>>
>>30433286
>Do I need a new, real, computer
If you can get the windows OS on a chromebook, then you're fine, but if that's not possible then buy a new computer.
>>
>>30433384

I meant "reference" is that you're sticking way too hard to the show and how its constructed. Loosen up a little. You need to find your own voice.

>>30433474
>If you look at that Twilight, does the picture tell you she went to smell the flowers? Or does it look more like a statue left in there?

Nobody who can draw would tell you that they can.

But seriously, thinking that you can't draw is pointless. It's not a terminal condition or something, you can have fun on any level and that's what is really important at least you can convince yourself that it is because you're not making much progress and honestly it almost seems hopeless

A lot of artists dislike their work and think they can't really draw. Just keep drawing and don't hate yourself for your mistakes is what I'm trying to say. It's important that you enjoy the process itself. If you're unsure if you're even moving in the right direction (or making progress at all) just post your stuff.

Did you freehand this or is there a construction sketch?
Because if you're not doing one that'd be a good starting point. The face looks pretty good, but you need to work on your manes and remember that the neck doesn't bend inwards like an hourglass; The front and back of it should be parallel.
>>
>>30436063
don't draw a pointy end chin, on most occasions when a character is facing to a side the necklines curve with the direction of the rest of the pony's body. the pupils should probably be closer to the same size, if it's rd, the hair should run on top of the nape.

The issue is really just relying on stabilizers.
That's just bad practice.

Also,
>should
I hope you meant "can."
>>
>>30444693
Is it alright to use a stabilizer if you're inking with a mouse
>>
>>30444703
I suppose it's alright.
Though, you might want to avoid it, as I assume a very important aspect of drawing with a mouse is learning to be stable with it.
>>
>>30444731
I don't really draw with the mouse, I ink the lines I make on paper
I honestly have no idea how you would make smooth lines with an unstabilized mouse though
>>
>>30444743
I mean, I've drawn with a mouse a few times for the fuck of it hence why I answered seriously, that, and I do believe I have seen a few artists who legitimately have drawn with mouse and mspaint for quite a long time, and it is very much possible to get some smooth lines. From my experience it just requires patience, carefulness, and to zoom in quite closely. And some practice, of course.

Just a heads up, this is the worst method if you want to do this. It kinda works, it can be used sometimes, but it doesn't work like you think it does, it wasn't meant for this, and the results can be really bad if you don't know what you're doing.

In >>30455616, when you lock the alpha channel, you are replacing the color channels entirely, and that's what you want. But when you use "alpha to selection", you modify the color channels depending on the value of the alpha channel. That means that parts that are opaque are replaced entirely, but parts that are partly transparent (ie, the edges, because we're using antialias) are only changed depending on their transparency. So, if you have a part that it's half-transparent yellow and you paint it blue, you aren't painting it blue, you're adding a half-transparent blue fill, making the thing look green. Again, it's only noticeable in the edges, and usually after you've changed the color a couple of times. But if one method works perfectly and the other method looks worse, you should try and use only the good method.

First half of the video: alpha channel locked, second half: alpha channel unlocked, alpha to selection.

This does help, thanks.
My original idea with the tail was to make different levels - pic related, the light green goes over the leg a bit while the darker green goes kinda under; this is all on the floor while the grey zone is supposed to be a slope that goes up a bit. But I don't know if I'm doing it right and it's hard to tell without shading.

It's obvious you put some effort into this, but you still have a lot to work on. It really just kind of looks like a mess. And I didn't even get started on your shadows and highlights (white over black, but gray over white). And why does the neck part of the tie look disproportionate to the knot? Looks like thick string.

Refer to the OP for some good tutorials and reference on anatomy and pony structure.

sorry for messy pic, i was too lazy to expand the canvas and tried to speed out this redline because i'm on schedule.

There's a few beginner mistakes with the character composition, like the bulk of the tail, the legs being too flat, the facial symmetry being off, the pillow being a bag of cement instead of interconnected fiber mass. the wing shape and horn being almost flat facing.

Also background perspectives are a bit haphazardly crafted. Would make sure they all meet at the same point. shading is a whole another beast to start to troubleshoot here and I got work to do so i just have to leave it to someone else! Anyway I hope these red lines provide at least some help.

Study form and movement in real life. Some of this stuff just naturally comes to people, even if they practiced in the past it's second nature to them. >>
>>30472034
As a tip, try imagining your composition in as much detail as possible. Your imagination just throws things and your brain fills in the blanks, but you never really pay attention to detail, you need to focus on that detail.
>>
>>30472516
I try to imagine as much as possible but when it comes to the drawing itself I find myself lacking the ability to lay it down like I imagine it, or even worse, accepting the compromise between what I wanted and what I've drawn, thinking that it's alright. Like with the legs, I tried to change them a lot but in the end it was the approach itself I took that wasn't right at all, and yet even knowing this I was ready to accept it. I hope it's just the lack of practice and not something I'm stuck with forever.
>>
>>30472464
I have a list of the ones I've personally held. I'm not sure if you're looking for the challenge description or if you want to see the outcome? If you'd like palettes/charts just let me know:
1. Palette challenge with a shitty challenge
2. Palette challenge with less shitty palette challenge
3. Palette AND pony rolls challenge
4. Best or worst OC you can possibly make
5. Easy/medium/hard expressions charts
6. 2-3 colors only (counting black and white) with a palette of your own choice
7. Basically a 7-day theme challenge. Day 1: weather, Day 2: food, etc

I'm the drawfag who redlined >>30471547
"The vision" is hardest thing to develop and took me years of refining to get where I am at now. And I am nowhere near where I want to be. But I keep looking at the world around me, really straining my brain in taking in the compositions, lights and shadows, the way things sit in the environment, how much they project their own colors, shadows and reflections to materials around them. I study shapes, landscapes, how buildings look like and consciously try to convert what I see into a image I'd draft on paper, where in what I look at I would draw lines, how to crosshatch or what kind of brush stroke is needed etc.
It takes a lot of thought and focus to keep the vision up while you build your scene. I would try making a ton of black and white / grayscale illustrations before starting with colors if I were you. This forces you to see more shadows and shapes instead of relying to color and smooth fade to "fake" some depth.

Good luck in your attemps and remember, if your thinking isn't hurting your brain, you're not giving it enough effort.
>>
>>30472650
I definitely agree that trying to envision things properly is really hard and it's a big problem for me, I guess there's no easy way to do it.
>I would try making a ton of black and white / grayscale illustrations before starting with colors if I were you. This forces you to see more shadows and shapes instead of relying to color and smooth fade to "fake" some depth.
Yes, I really need to do that, I often find myself lost when it comes to these things, I've gotta start doing things properly.
>if your thinking isn't hurting your brain, you're not giving it enough effort
It's more of a state of anxiety/panic because I mostly just try to reduce the damage done and trying to make things look passable because I don't really know what I'm doing.
Thanks again, friend, this really helps me.
>>
>>30472717
If you take a look and compare >>30471547>>30463663, you will notice that there's a level of perspective that is corrected, and how the objects in the foreground and background relate to the pony herself. You really need to keep in mind perspective as well as dynamic angels to further better your composition. There's a good thread on /ic/ about it, I highly recommend reading it for insight on perspective. That's just another thing to keep in mind while creating a piece.

Do these on paper not the tablet.
>>
>>30485590
Clip Studio Paint. It's an art program. It's like SAI on steroids, like 1000x better. What photoshop is to photos is what CSP is to 2d illustration.

see >>30433097 for the download link.
>>
>>30485849
I'll do it, practice is practice, but how well will that transition to tablet?

>>30485885
That's what I thought about Krita, and despite unwillingly being moved to the program, I'm fairly happy with it. But after how you described CPS, I don't know, I think I'll have to give it a shot. Hopefully it's available for Linux.
>>
>>30485849
Also, you don't mean the method where you spin the paper around and keep your hand frozen, do you? You mean drawing circles start to finish?
>>
>>30486134
traditional practice translates very well to digital, trust me. You dont know how to free hand effectively right now no matter what tool, so looking down at your paper while you do it will help build confidence.
>>30486190
no I mean literally freehand it, pen or pencil on paper and draw a circle quickly. notice how uneven it is? draw it again over the same spot trying to correct what you think are the mistakes. repeat 3 times then move to the side and repeat. it'll train your muscle memory and help with line confidence.
>>
>>30486413
Yosh. Thanks, Anon. Did what you said, and holy hell, were you right. The circles were all mostly unsteady, but I did slowly start doing better. A lot of the times I wasn't properly connecting the circle either, and would end just above it or cross the beginning. Was happy to see the occasional consistent circles here and there.

For the other exercise, would I just make the dots myself, and make curves or lines connecting them?

Thanks again.
>>
>>30486552
Yup make two dots a good distance apart and ghost your arm to connect them aka make like you want to draw the line but dont actually put your pen/pencil to the paper. Do this 3-4 times per line and then actually put the tip to the paper and make the line. There are video examples of this if it sounds confusing.

Whats wrong with lazy nezumi? That shit helps me to get done way faster with the linart process, without it i need around 30mins more to get the dang lines right

I want to see a drawing already: draw twilight selling a car to Gilda. I want your crappiest work, I don't care if it's in pen or with ms paint, multiple submissions accepted, GO!
>>
>>30486696
Ill be lazy anytime if i can avoid 30+minutes of drawing a line and ctrl+z-ing it until it looks good. If i want to practice my lineart I draw traditionally. Also, my stabilizer is set to such a weak level that it's barely noticeable, it just takes the tiny occasional wobbles out of the lines
>>
>>30486727
I use it, but my lines still come out bad by looking too artificial and stiff, and I'll usually never be able to do the entire segment in one stroke; I think I might need to zoom out in those scenarios, but I'm not sure.

Using what >>30485849 this Anon posted helped me see it's not the tool. If anything, I need to simply need to find a stabilizer setting that works as I keep practicing.

Well, that all depends on what you're going for. Something affordable and standard in performance, or something more high end? Things to consider mentioning.

Seeing as how you're using a tablet I once had, I wanted to recommend mine if you were leaning more towards the former, but a quick search lead me to discover it must have stopped being manufactured quite a while ago. Which is a shame. It was simple, more so than your model as it outright LACKS a touch feature, but if you valued a large working area and simple performance, at $60, it was a steal. It also runs on Linux, and I have to to say, I'll miss it once it's finally run its course.

I can't even find a model name for it anymore.

uh, okay. I hope this is what you're looking for

- learn fundamentals. If you don't know what that includes, look at the OP for a link
- learn basic human anatomy. it'll come in really handy unless you choose to never draw a human ever. With this, I also suggest...
- learn how to do gesture drawings. You want to capture the movment or emotion, etc but not by doing contour drawings. Another thing to look up (I think youtube would help best)
- >>30497936 this and >>30497946
- learn basic 1, 2, and 3 point perspective. It will help your scenes look way more convincing
- draw what you see, not what you think you see. I cannot stress this one enough
- If possible, try as many art mediums as you can which can be, but not limited to, graphite, charcoal, collage, assemblage, pastel, colored pencils, oil/water/acrylic paint, markers, ink, digital, clay, etc. The more you know about each medium the more it will help you improve as an artist. I know some of these can be expensive, so maybe ask friends if they have anything they can donate. If you don't have friends, try thrift stores or even kids craft supplies. You can do amazing things with any material if you put effort into it
- Take in everything you see. How does a tree's branches branch off? Try to figure out the perspective of a simple building and draw it if you can (bring a ruler for that), watch the way a squirrel runs and hops - you get it right?

Basically: be a good observer, have a lot of time & patience, don't be afraid of experimenting, don't be afraid of failing because you're going to fail and that will help you learn a lot, bring a small sketchbook everywhere if you can, and mostly just have fun and enjoy it.

These are mostly generic so if you want something more specific let me know

Don't forget your anatomy, friends.
>>
I know this book looks like it would be terrible based on the name and cover, but it's actually surprisingly decent, specifically the proportions, anatomy, skeleton, and muscles part (it's by a furry artist and they do know their anatomy...).

It's pretty much aimed at emulating the FiM style (though they make it very clear they're NOT affiliated with MLP...) but the anatomy section can be applied to more personalized drawing styles. It's particularly helpful if you (like me) really suck and just want to become OK/decent at drawing show-style(ish) ponies pretty fast.

I only have the physical copy... does anyone have a PDF? It's not in the Mega archive at the top. I guess I could scan a few pages when I get home tonight.

Thanks my dude. I forgot about that site. Seems like it has literally every piece of pony media ever released...

Anyways here's those drawings in somewhat higher resolution. They're basically the same stuff you can find lots of other places for free, but the book covers a lot of other things, proportions (incl. bigger ponies and kid ponies), angles (front, 3/4 view, behind, above/below), poses, facial expressions, etc. So if anyone's looking for a good beginner's guide that is still mostly anatomy-based, check out that pdf (or buy the book I guess).

Here's another part form the book copied and pasted together. Leg joints are another thing beginners often have trouble with (which ways they can bend etc). It helpfully includes the equivalent human arm/leg joints for comparison. There are a lot of example poses in the book as well, jumping, crouching, laying down, rearing, etc.

Yes!
I technically do have a fancy drawing computor (Well a ~$100 Wacom Intuos so not THAT fancy), but I barely ever use it. I just can't get into it, at least not for sketching/day-to-day drawing. (I do use it for coloring scanned pencil drawings).

I think the main reason is because I like to draw BIG. I use a 11x14" sketchbook and I usually take up most of the page. And of course the feeling of pencil on paper just can't be recreated when using a drawing tablet. I dunno, I've tried for years to switch to a drawing tablet full time, but I just draw worse and slower when using one. I know you have to re-train yourself a bit to really become proficient, but I honestly just don't enjoy the experience of drawing when using a tablet, unlike pencil and paper which I find relaxing. So, I still stick to pencil and paper for sketch (sometimes actual pen for line work) then scan into the computer for coloring.

When your new art is visually and technically better than your old art.

How so? What have you done? I'm just doing boxes today.
>>
>>30519334
My art is getting worse. Like back in 2014-2015 I had lots of free time so I could draw a lot but now I have a job and real life responsibilities and shit and can barely ever find time to draw. And when I finally do sit down and start drawing, after an hour I'm just frustrated cuz what I've just drawn looks worse than what I could do 2-3 years ago.

Basically how tf can I find the time to draw? It can take a couple hours to make a finished drawing right? I only have like 1 MAYBE 2 or if i'm really lucky 3 "free" hours each day because of my job and other stuff, and that's not including dinner, I have to fit that in there somewhere. Not to mention this doesn't including using that precious time to maintain the very few friendships I still have, and other activities which I used to do for fun. (I still haven't even beat the new Zelda for example since I play only a few hours a week).

Everyone tells me "you don't have to give up on your creative side" and that it'd even be good for me to "get back in touch" with my creative side but it def. seems like I basically have to choose between doing creative stuff and having a 10+ hr a day professional job +1-1.5hr commute each way (a job I'm extremely lucky to have too, pays way more than I probably should be making with this little experience, I got extremely lucky)

Maybe I'm just too old for this shit (28).
>>

Are you me? Barely any free time for myself and that I spend drawing (vidya and everything else that's not drawing is out of question at this point). I'm also pretty much just starting out so it's so frustrating to learn at a slow pace because of time. At least I can draw boxes and shit at work sometimes.
I'm also 28 so maybe we are a bit too old for this.

I would position the ear back and lower a bit, the eyes could be more rounded. The muzzle is a bit pointed for my tastes, I would slightly round that out and re-position the nostrils. Her cheek is a bit droopy/fat compared to the other cheek. Pic related is me trying to keep your style but smoothing things out a bit.

Also don't forget to flip your canvas horizontally. It's very important you do that. What that does is gives you a new perspective to see your image. Like when you look in the mirror vs how people look at your face normally. It shows your flaws better.

No control over line-weight, it makes the image read flat, not that the flat profile perspective is helping either. It being a sketch doesn't give it an excuse to be shit, and if you think it does learn to apply yourself, or don't post it in a drawfag improvement thread. Learn perspective, how light works around forms, and to control lines better.

My biggest problem is that I'm such a slow drawer. Even this picture (the latest sfw picture I can actually post here) took several hours. I'd have tons of ideas, but when it takes hours to do something other people draw in minutes, I'll never get to use a fraction of a percent of them.

How can I learn to draw faster?

Regardless, I know your feel. I've spent hours on a piece that should've taken roughly 20 minutes. But that shit never happens, just a scape goat for my shitty skill.

Keep sketching/doodling. Just try to draw slightly faster. Don't worry about making an image look perfect, just keep drawing ponies a bunch of times. Don't worry about cleaning up your lines, just keep drawing a new pose/character each time, or keep practicing your current one.
