Like, I want to enjoy this game, but I'm sop bad. I lose to button mashers. There's probably some basic fighting game skill I'm missing. I know such a skill exists because I gave this game to a guy who's been playing other fighting games, and he he started juggling me just like that, without even looking up the move list.

Yes, I care, I backed this, but not enough to get beta access and it thoroughly annoys me how they've gone dead silent ever since the closed alpha has gone live. In general the closed alpha annoys me. I get that it was a crowdfund reward but if you have a playable build it's about time you let *everyone* get their hands on this, after all the game was supposed to be out months ago

You are probably not missing "some" basic skill, but many of them. Look up some youtube tutorials, learn about concepts like zoning / controlling space, anti-airing, blocking and punishing unsafe moves, mix ups, blockstrings, what is frame advantage and how to make use of it, how to hit confirm and all that...

At the end of the day, it's a matter of experience. You can help the process by reading up and consciously learning, but it all more or less comes naturally by playing too and for someone who's well versed in the genre, these ideas have become second nature and they can adapt and make use of them to beat you in a new game in a jiffy. And nothing but a loooot of playtime will make up for that difference in skill.

In general, adapting to new situations quick is an important key skill in it's own right. As a fan of 2d fighters I found that I would also kick more casual players asses in stuff like the Naruto or DBZ games, while they are different in their core mechanics you just start to approach games differently, make little "mental notes" of anything that gets you hit and refrain from doing it and keep doing anything that got the opponent hit and then they throw their gamepads in frustration because hours upon hours of grinding down the CPU opponents didn't prepare them for you, who just picked the game up for the first time. Cause they can do 100 hit combos but keep doing that one unsafe string and you just block and punish, or like always dash in at a certain spot and you just stick out a move to beat that everytime, or they always block on the defense so you get free throws all the time, and so on. And even if you told them exactly what makes you win, you have figured out the mechanics, if they changed it up now you would also know how to deal with that. So, in conclusion, all these "basic" skills make up a complete arsenal of understanding that's anything but basic and pretty much impossible to overcome for newbies
