I don't shit on em, I have my feelings about it though. my sorta-normie group of friends pretty heavily judges the shitton of merch, 50 con badges type. I say people should have any harmless fun they want anywhere in life, what you do and where just might put up barriers for others to get to really know you beyond stereotypes etc. What you wear is what you are saying about yourself. If you only do that at cons, then that's relatively sensible. If you don't care to meet more people anyways, you have less to lose.

In comparison with heavily gearing up for, say.. comiccon, blizzcon, burning man etc, maybe my friends are just too judgmental and it's rubbed off on me, but something about pony/furry con ultra-enthusiasm just gives off a way different vibe. I can't say it makes me want to associate with them.

Honestly I am trying to care less. What sticks with me is how one said friend made a comment at the last con we went to. "All the wierdos seem to be having way more fun than me."

It's not too late. You can always hand wash using a small amount of gentle detergent diluted in a bucket of water (maybe 0.5oz/gal, but check the directions).

You can either immerse and soak the plush, then gently squeeze the water out and immerse and squeeze twice in fresh water to rinse, or you can just use a damp soapy cloth to wash and and wet cloth to rinse.

Soak is intended for delicate items like this and doesn't require rinsing, so I would recommend you try that:

I've used Sportwash to hand wash plenty of things, but sadly have no plushes to test it on. It has a slight odor but no perfume scents, and rinses out well:

That is what I tried on another plushie (don't have a pic). It was much worse off (~2 years of sweat/skin oils). My OC plushie has about a years worth, and it's much less stained (if you can believe it)

So what went wrong with the other one?

Did the stuffing get shifted around trying to dry it, or did it just not clean well enough (in which case what I would do is move up to immersion in soapy water and a vegetable brush for the minky)

The only problem is that the minky is all stiff. It's still kinda soft (stuffing is still good)
I posted a thread a few weeks ago while I was cleaning Sweetie, and they said to unstuff her, and put the fabric in a bag with baking soda and let it rest for about 30-45 minutes, since the stains are so dense
Would that be more effective and less hard on the minky?

Minky is pretty tough and it is totally synthetic. I have gotten blood on one of my white plushies from a hand injury reopening and it dried and it came right out the next morning no problem and no stains. That is the only time I ever had to clean one of mine. I don't know about your particular situation.

Guessing the minky is stiff because it's gunked up with oils from your skin.

You're welcome to try baking soda, but I would bet a modern detergent will do better. If you are unstuffing anyway, I would try sportwash or even a drop or two of dawn in water.

From what I understand, the challenges of washing plushies are:
Not clumping the fibers of the minky (I believe this is solved by avoiding any kind of softener and by brushing it back out afterwards with a toothbrush or other soft nylon brush)
Unable to dry stuffing completely (not an issue for a small plush like that)
Not shifting or clumping the stuffing (probably less of a problem with small plushies, but idk)
And finally, popping seams, which is solved by hand washing instead of letting a machine thrash it about.

Ok, but that was just a spot clean. Unfortunately with my situation I don't think there is any way for the plushie to look good again.

Lesson learned, I guess. I plan on getting a plushie at BronyCon this year, and I've already picked out some display cases, so I won't be tempted

Honestly that looks like perfectly normal skin oil. You really can get that clean with just detergent, and a clean plush will look much better, even if in the worst case you pill the fabric a bit.
