/k/ Posting Welcome Edition

Sgt. Reckless was a real horse who served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. She was known for delivering heavy loads without help from a handler and for eating everything from blankets to poker chips. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Reckless

Let us honor her service.

Literally Obama

Basically the Koreans were getting ready to ship a ton of garands used in the war over to America for private sales and Obama signed an executive order forbidding it because "muh evil WW2 era guns on the street, think of the chillun"

Unfortunately Trump isn't much better, banning VEPR's from import and all that

>>

A garand actually used in the Korean conflict? Probably quite rare and expensive but I imagine there's a few floating around the US kinda like Vietnamese SKS's.

Just a garand manufactured during the war? Still not as likely, many of the garands were refurbs of WW2 models with about 300,000 new ones made from 1953-1956.

>>
>>30415357
If I were interested in spending $$$$ on an M14 instead of a good gun like a SCAR 17S, I'd probably go for an LRB instead of a Springfield.
I know that I'd never shoot enough .308 for the distinction between the forged vs. cast receivers to matter, but if I'm spending thousands of dollars either way, I might as well get my money's worth.

>Or a Korean War Era M14 Rifle?

The first M14s weren't manufactured until around 1957-58. In 1952 the M14, or "T44," as the Army called the experimental test series leading up to it, only existed as a series of one-off toolroom prototypes in which they tested things like different gas piston geometries, different magazine locking systems, and so on.

The FN-FAL almost got selected to replace the M1. The Army contracted with a few different manufacturers to make a US inch-pattern version of the FAL with a few changes the Army said they wanted--the bigger triggerguard is for use with gloves, the lip you can see on top of the receiver cover is actually a stripper clip guide (yes, someone at the Pentagon decided the FN FAL wasn't good enough if you couldn't reload it from the top with stripper clips--party like it's 1899!)

Blueprints were handed out and prototypes were made in several plants. I think H&R built a few and High Standard built some for testing.

They selected the T44/M14 over it because Not Invented Here, and also because Winchester lied to the Pentagon and said they could make M14s on existing Garand tooling (which was twenty years old and worn the fuck out), and no, they couldn't, the receivers were too different, and they needed new tooling of some kind anyway.

Anyway. I seem to recall that some of the prototypes had a permanently attached flash hider and some didn't, and a few different flash hider patterns were tried--the sample guns from FN Herstal in Belgium had a long slotted flash hider similar to the ones the L1A1 got, the Hi-Standard guns had a conical stamped sheet metal flash hider, and the H&R guns had a detachable flash hider like the Bundeswehr G1 FAL.

korean falls under the category of asian.
white supremacy and ethno-nationalism, realistically without memes, doesn't want to kill all non-whites. it focuses around keeping each race in their respective parts of the globe, ie blacks back to africa, arabs back to the middle east, and whites with their own nations. asians, in general, stick to their own ethno-sphere so there's no problem with them.

>>
>>30423129
Why would she be using a Polish handgun? That doesn't make any sense at all.
>>
>>30423137
Wasn't that a Polish copy of the Mauser K98?

Lots of Mauser rifles got sold and/or given as military aid by Hitler to Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalist forces in the 1930s. I don't recall Polish rifles specifically being sold to them but I don't rule out the possibility.
>>
>>30423383
Anti-tank Polish rifle actually, I was thinking about the FB Vis (pistolet wz. 35 Vis).

Still don't think any communist forces would have been using it, maybe like a couple dozen among the whole armies at most, but the US side wouldn't have used them at all.
>>
>>30423410
Well, the Russians and Germans both captured a lot of Radom pistols from the Poles, and lots of them got sold off as surplus after the war and/or handed out as Communist Party Favors by Josef Stalin to people like the Norks after the war.

Antiarmor rifles, not so much. The Norks might have gotten a mishmash of stuff captured from the Germans and to a lesser extent captured from the Japanese (which would have included both German weapons and stuff the Germans captured and/or purchased from neutral countries during the war--the Argentines, Swiss, and Swedes were happy to do business with Hitler right up until the shooting stopped), for which ammo might or might not have been available.

I have read accounts of the Norks ending up with PTRS41s also--the single-shot bolt-action 14.5mm "antitank rifle" that used the same cartridge as the KPV heavy machine gun. For those at least they might have had more ammo.
>>
>>30423440
PTRD-41's are the single shot bolt actions anon

PTRS-41's are the semi-automatic ones, basically really fucking big SKS's in 14.5mm.

Just remember, the S in PTRS stands for Simonov.
>>
Do we have any Pony from vietnam war?
>>
>>30423617
Sorry, I keep getting those mixed up. Either way they were enormous, heavy things that were obsolete before they ever got into the hands of front-line troops. All of them.

Since the late 1980s we have seen a resurgence of the concept of large-caliber precision direct-fire weapons that are sorta man-portable, most in .50 BMG, but they're for poking holes in SCUD missiles on the launch erectors from two klicks out and the occasional bit of ultra-long-range harassment sniper fire. As antiarmor weapons their day passed before 1942--really, before 1930.
>>
>>30420958
I precisely meant this. Asians in general are almost as pre-WWII Europe levels of racist. Difference being the Westerners actually tried to use science. While the rest of the world continues to be racist but doesn't care for the Western invention of human rights and dignity of life.

There are some transferable pre-1986 examples out there, but they aren't cheap.

Tangent: I have decided that if I were ever to get any Class III stuff, I want a S&W M76 SMG. It's a stamped sheet metal open-bolt pistol-caliber subgun, basically a slightly improved (in the sense that it has an adjustable aperture rear sight instead of open sights) clone of the old Swedish KP45, created at the request of the US Navy during the Vietnam War, due to shortages of the popular KP45.

I find it compelling just because of a 1970s zombie movie with Charlton Heston called "The Omega Man." Pic related.

Hatred for gooks isn't exactly prevalent on the board, although you may see it occasionally. Southern gooks don't, be they in Asia, or the West don't cause very many obvious problems, so there isn't very much to catch people's attention and fuel the hate machine.

Exactly my problem, paying $20,000 for a gun that costs about $200 to make is way out of my price range, and if I ever was going to spend that much on a gun it would probably be on an M1A1 Thompson before anything else.
>>
>>30426785
>an M1A1 Thompson
The M3 is better than the Thompson in every practical respect.
>>
>>30427660
Yeah, but Thompsons, especially prewar Thompsons, have a kind of gangster-movie "cool factor" that the stamped sheetmetal M3 lacks.

It's not like either one is a practical firearm in the year 2017. They're range toys.

Yes, in the same sense that a cut-down shotgun with a 12" or 14" barrel would be if there were no laws against that kind of thing. Except that such a short shotgun would have only three to five rounds in the magazine tube, if that, and better tools are available in the 21st Century. Compare a pistol-caliber SMG to a full-auto M16 type with a 7" barrel on it. Or a shorty "AK pistol" with a folding stock, decent muzzle brake, and happy switch. Any of them's about the same size and weight as a pistol-caliber SMG, or less--an M4 carbine with a 7" upper is four inches shorter and two pounds lighter than the M3, both with stocks fully extended, and quite a bit more powerful.

Now, 5.56mm does lose a lot of juice going down to a 7" "pistol upper" barrel. I see chrono data online showing M855 Ball will do around 2300 ft/sec, down about 750 from what you get from the 20" barrel the round was designed for. I still wouldn't want to stand in front of it but 7" barrels and M855 Ball are a non-optimum combination and you might want to consider softpoints or hollowpoints.

7.62x39mm runs at lower pressures and loses a lot less power going from 16" AK barrels down to 10" "AK pistol" barrels, from 2350 down to 2100 or so.

In 2017, the only thing the $200 pistol-caliber subgun has going for it is price. Sort of like pump shotguns with buckshot, which are 1917's answer to the question. It works, but technology has advanced and there are better solutions out there, and price--or maybe long-term personal familiarity, I guess--are the only really good reasons not to pick a modern military-type semiauto (or select-fire, if legally available) carbine over them.

subcarbines like 7" ARs and Krinkovs are really brutally noisy, though
like "permanent hearing damage even with a can/one layer of earpro" noisy
meanwhile suppressed SMGs are quiet enough to shoot all day without earpro with no ill effects
SMGs really have a lot going for them if you aren't concerned about armor or 100+ yard shots

The whites were first in the Americas and the Indians, so called """natives""", themselves retell their folklore of killing the "white gods who build mountains to see the stars".

Some "natives" moved West, knowing that their Mother Earth protected the colonists, others tried to fight but their "magic" refused to listen to them, and the Mesoamericans outright deified the newcomers, except for the Hopi.

This.
I'm a native /pol/ack, but watching these two retards go back and fourth with their off-topic argument is getting really fucking annoying. Derailing threads is [rude] by any board's standards, and is one of the many reasons why /pol/ has turned to shit.. If you're gonna talk politics here, at least make an effort and supplement it with ponifications of your subject matter.
Can we get back to the brave horse? War-ponies are my favorite kinds of OCs, and /hist/ ponies are one in a million.
Let's talk about her sons (see >>30426390), based on the real horses. They're a pretty good representation of American veterans, and I'd like to see more of them. I couldn't find any information about their fathers (I-I'm not jealous! B-baka!), or who they were sold to (was trying to trace Reckless's bloodline), but I've been wondering about what kind of headcanons their stories could have...
Anyway, I thought that maybe their cutie marks could be centered around the remaining card types, like spades clubs, and diamonds, and be based on other games that use the symbols, besides poker (also, the absence of the heart put a bit of emphasis on the filly who died after birth, since she would've been the last of the set. Does that sound like a good idea?

I'm loving that "card types as cutie marks" idea, it fits perfectly with these ponies

I'd love to see a green about Fearless in the Vietnam War next, since that's the next war after the Korean one. Or maybe we could have Reckless continue participating in cold war shenanigans? Maybe somehow she ends up in Afghanistan with Anon during the Russian war there? I know the years might not match up, but it could be fun
>>
>>30433027
Well, cards/poker aren't really recurring themes for Reckless. She just ate the chips, and poker kind of fits the theme of her name.

Let's start by thinking of a cutie mark theme for Fearless, the Vietnam vet. I'm no Vietnam expert, so what's a good symbol that might represent being a soldier in that war? Or, perhaps something to relate to tiredness or unwillingness/reluctancy to fight.
>>
>>30433085
A cavalry hat.
>>
>>30433085
>Vietnam
>Leaf covered helmet
Kinda wanna imagine an Apocalypse Now kinda thing.
In the pic Fearless seems as autistic as Captain Willard so it fits to mix in modern military stuff with more tribal shit.
>Gulf
>Oil barrel with American flag logo and M4 on the side.
The war was an absolute curb stomp at that point.
>Afgan
>Scissors cutting wires.
The bomb paranoia is real.
Maybe all of them can having a poker chip somewhere on their cutie mark would show they're related.
Just a suggestion.

Well, I'm not a kill-joy who thinks that Reckless should be confined to her timeline, but it may be awkward to write her fighting alongside her sons.. Do it however you want though: I haven't been a pony writefag in years, and I've lost touch with the art.
There's also the option of making moar war-pone OCs to fight alongside Reckless's offspring in their greentexts.
>the years might not match up
This is the biggest obstacle in the conceptualization of having three siblings serve in three separate wars, in the same universe, especially since horses irl don't live as long as humans.... There's always the option of compressing time and/or ignoring rough edges. So long as enough Anons get interested and content keeps getting made, the timeline could gradually manifest by itself, once the ball starts rolling.
I do hope the Cold War pones theme kicks off though. There's so much potential.
>>30433085
I preferred to think of her as sporting a general gambling theme, but poker should be her center. I like the two, separate, hearts, because when you play War, Two beats Ace. Likewise, the image of her taping two Aces to her helmet gives off an implication of staking the deck and defying all odds (there's no cheating when it comes to mortal combat, after all); it also communicates the feeling of carrying someone else's heart/life/burden, which fits her character irl, since she carried so many of her critically wounded comrades to safety in her service.
As far as Fearless's CM goes, the Ace of Spades (aka the "Death Card) is by far the best symbol for him, seeing as how he represents American troops in Vietnam, who used it as a symbol to demoralize the Viet Kong. It's so appropriate, heck, if an original Vietnam pone were created, independent of Reckless, his symbol would be the Ace of Spades by default.
Brb on that, but pls read:

Looks like this thread has been salvaged to where we're actually talking about ponies again.

What do you all think about the poker/cards theme for Reckless' children? I don't know how I feel about it... It's cute and it's a unifying theme, but is it really fitting? The poker chips work for Reckless because A. she ate poker chips, B. the two purple hearts, and C. poker is a somewhat reckless kind of game. Does that really extend to Fearless, Dauntless, and Chesty?

Besides, there are some people who still don't like the poker chips for Reckless. I can't really blame them - the rising sun cutie mark works pretty well, too. I'd like thoughts from those anons too, if they're willing to share.

Reckless arrives in Equestria, bears some foals or takes her children with her, and fights in the Equestrian military despite the fact that it's the main reason for the skewed male-to-female ratio among ponies.

She may or may not find Anons in Equestria.

Also, Potoo needs to have potatos as a cutiemark. Maybe eight of them.
>>
>>30446756
>Maybe eight of them.

I'd expect them to have more explicitly military/USMC-themed cutie marks, since they were born in it, rather than merely adopting it like their mom.

I'm going to presume we're talking about a survival situation for decency's sake.

>Overrun by the enemy
>Separated from all friendly forces except Sarge Reckless
>Ran out of rations yesterday
>Despite mostly successful escape and evasion, you got shot in the hand
>"Private! You getting infection in hand wound! Need cut off, right now!"
"No I'm not. I cleaned it with-"
>"I have good sense of smell, not make mistake. Hand must go."
"I'd like a second opinion from a corpsman."
>"We at least days away from friendlies. Hand already infected or soon will be."
"You're not backing down from this, are you?"
>"I pull rank if you keep saying no."
"God dammit."
>One field surgery with a fire-sterilized KABAR later
"You totally owe me a prosthetic hand for this."
>"Not first time someone want me get new limb for them. Come, we eat."
"Eat what? We're out of food."
>"Hand! We cook, infection die, we eat!"
>Is this pony serious?
"This was your plan from the start."
>"What? No."
>She's making that face she only makes when she lies
"Can ponies even eat meat?"
>"Only if small amount. Stop stall, I hungry."
"You're gonna have to work hard to make up for this, Sarge. You cook, I get first dibs."
>"Only fair. Is yours."
>One roast hand later
>"Not bad. Anon, why you no eat? Just think of like any other food."
>You're going to let her finish before you tell her
"I'm just, uh... mourning. I'm going to miss this hand."
>She swallows what's left of her meager meal
>"I sorry, Anon. Was only way."
>You are really fucking hungry
>No reason not to say a few words before you chow down, though
"I suppose you're right. Here lies Specialist Fapsy Wankalot. He's been with me my whole life, but it was only in my teen years that I truly began to appreciate what he does for me."
>You take a bite and smile at Reckless
>Up until this point, you've never seen her rattled
>Now she's in pure shell-shock mode
>You swallow and lean in close
"That prosthetic better have a goddamn vibrator built in."

Oh jeez, this place is dead. I'll try and fix that
Have a shitty update:

>You awake to a sleepy yawn from Reckless
>"Y'know, for a sleep outside in the snow that was rather nice."
"You really think so? Maybe for you.." you groan in response
>Your back aches a little bit from sleeping on the hard-packed snow, but since Reckless had you as a mattress you suppose it must've been nice for her.
>"I-it's not like I really enjoyed that anyways!"
"Yeah well 'sleeping out in the cold snow with a bossy horse' wasn't really something I was looking forward to, but it sure beats freezing to death."
>Although you meant it playfully, Reckless actually looks slightly hurt when you say that
>She clambers off of you and trots towards the tree that your backpack is leaning on
>She sticks her nose inside of it and begins to noisily dig around inside
"What're ya looking for, Sarge?"
>She doesn't answer, and after a few more seconds of scrounging around she brings her head out of your bag to look at you
>"We don't have any food, do we Private?"
"Err.. no, I don't think we do. This wasn't supposed to take that long."
>"We should probably hit the road then." she says while she puts on her helmet
>You stand up, brushing the snow off of you
"Yeah." you say as you sling your backpack back over your shoulder
"Let's go."
>>
>>30490790
>After some forest trekking the pair of you emerge onto the path that you were chased on last night
>The blowing wind and snowfall had eliminated almost all signs that a chase had ever happened
>You and Reckless start to walk back towards camp, making crunching sounds with your boots in the snow as you go along
>The morning sun and lack of wind help keep you warm while you walked, but it's still a little chilly
>You walk mostly in silence, staying alert in case of another ambush or enemy soldiers that might still be searching for you
>But after a while it became evident that the enemy seemed to have given up
>It was just one soldeir, his rifle, and his pony after all.
>Actually, you remember that you don't even have your rifle anymore. It's still buried out there in the snow somewhere
>Along with the body of that Korean you shot..
>You've never killed before that, and you aren't sure how to feel
>Maybe you should be proud at having killed an enemy? Remorse for having to take a human life?
>But the reality was that you didn't really feel anything.
>You shake those thoughts out of your head, and instead focus on the march back to base
>Once she's convinced that a gook isn't gonna jump out from behind a tree and gank you two, Reckless grows a bit more talkative
>"You know I owe you for saving me yesterday.. right?"
"Wait, what? You're not serious are you?"
>"I mean, you saved my life Private.."
"And I'd do the same for any other soldier, just like you would."
>"I still feel like I owe you though."
"If you wanna look at things that way, consider this my way of paying you back for saving my life all those weeks ago."
>She looks away to think about that for a moment before looking back up at you
>"C'mooon, there's gotta be something else I could offer you!" she says while subtly rubbing against your leg
>Woah, slow down
"Oh? Like what?"
>"Well, I've saved your life. And you've saved mine. I'd say we're pretty close by now.."
>>
>>30490794
>"And I know this war can get a little lonely sometimes.."
>OH
>Her rubbing against your leg isn't so subtle anymore
>"So I was thinking that, maybe later, we could.. y'know-"
"Woah, I'm not even a horse!"
>She blushes
>"W-well yeah, but who said I wasn't in to anything exotic?~"
"You're my sergeant! Isn't this breaking some kinda rule? Hell, this has to be breaking a million different rules!"
>Suddenly she headbutts your left leg, not enough to hurt but enough to make you lose your balance and fall backwards
>She jumps on top of you, her eyes locking with yours
>"Aren't rules made to be broken?"
>Oh boy
>You feel your brass stiffen up a bit..
"C-can't we focus on getting back to base for now?"
>You really need some time to mull this over
>"F-fine!" she says.
>"Be that way, Private!"
>She hops off of you while blushing furiously, and starts walking along the path without looking back at you
>She's obviously extremely embarassed over this.
>You stand up to a crouch
>You're about to say something, but you hold your tongue
>Getting back to base in one piece is really what you should be focusing on right now
>You rise to your feet and follow her wordlessly
>The two of you side by side silently, neither of you looking at eachother
>Great..
>>
>>30490798
>After some uneventful (and silently awkward) walking on the snowy path, you see something off in the distance
>Looks like.. people
>Shit.
>You grab Reckless and pull her aside behind a large boulder
>"Finally change your mind, Private?~"
"What? N-no!"
>You let out a somewhat frustrated sigh
"Just look over there!"
>Both you and Reckless peek over the rock you're hiding behind
>"O-oh," she says with a blush
>She shakes her head to clear any embarrassment from her mind now that she's seen the potential danger up ahead
"See 'em?"
>"Yeah, they don't look American. Uniform doesn't match up."
"I figured, since we're still pretty far from base. What do you suppose we should do Sarge?"
>She looks away to think for a few moments
>"Well, there's only two of them.."
>"You still have your bayonet?"
"Uhh.."
>After patting yourself down you find it in it's sheathe, strapped to your belt
"Yeah, I still have it."
>"We could ambush them. Stab one then shoot the other."
>As you discuss strategy with Reckless the figures get closer and closer to your hiding spot
"I don't really think shooting is a good plan. Might attract more of them, if they're in the area."
>Reckless swears under her breath
>"Shit, you're right. But you aren't going to take out both of them with a knife before one of them gets a shot off."
"Well.."
>She looks at you with an eyebrow raised
>"I know that face, Private. What're you planning?"
"Do me a favor and take off your barding."
>"W-what?"
"Your helmet too. If you aren't wearing anything that distinctly marks you as a U.S. horse, you could distract 'em."
>"How so?" she asks, puzzled
"I don't know, try being cute or something. You're pretty good at that after all."
>Her face scrunches up
>"D-don't call me cute! I'm your Sergeant!"
>What?
>This horse was really sending some mixed messages.
"Just saying, Sarge."
>>
>>30490802
>After helping Reckless out of her barding and anything else that marked her as a U.S. horse, the two of you lie in wait behind the rock
>You have your bayonet drawn and ready in your right hand
>As the two enemies get closer, you can hear them conversing in what you think is Korean.
>"Igeos-eun kkeumjjighan il-ida." one says
>"Ne. Naneun jaemiissneun il-i il-eonal geos-eul balanda." the other replies
>They're almost to the rock now.
"Go!" you whisper, lightly slapping Reckless in the flank with your free hand
>With a snort she canters forward in front of them
>They both gasp, one of them reaching for his rifle
>"Gidalyeo!" one says. "Geugeos-eun danji mal-ibnida."
>The one reaching for his rifle relaxes, and crouches down slightly so that he's level with Reckless
>"Ibwa yo!" he says while extending a hand out to pet Reckless. "Jal jinaess-eoyo?"
>She reluctantly approaches him, allowing herself to be pet
>"Hurry up!" she mouths towards your hiding place behind the rock
>"Jamkkan, geugeo bungdae ya?"
>Sneaking around the side of the rock, you position yourself to attack the Korean that's still standing up
>With a deep breath, you rush out from behind the rock
>Before he even knows what's going on you jab your bayonet into his neck
>He grabs the knife while spluttering and falling to his knees
>You realize that yanking the knife out of the Korean's throat would take too much time, and instead you move to kick his crouching comrade over
>He falls to the ground with a yelp, and you leap on top of him to pin him to the ground
>"Ani! Jenjang!"
>He fights back but you manage to keep him pinned
>For now.
"Sarge! Do something!"
>With a whinny she rears and brings her front hooves down onto his head as hard as she can
>There's an audible crack as his neck snaps, causing him to stop struggling
>>
>>30490810
>You stand up, breathing heavily
>Shit.
>"I hope you don't get used to me playing the 'cute distraction,' Private." Reckless pipes up
>She shudders
>"That felt.. demeaning."
"Yeah well, it worked, didn't it?"
>"Hmph. I guess so."
>You crouch down next to the soldier that you stabbed
>His dead hand is still clutching the knife embedded in his throat
>Pushing the hand to the side, you grab the knife and yank it out with some effort
>It's bloody, so you clean it on your pants before returning it to it's sheathe
>While you're crouched you also grab the dead man's rifle
>Looks like an Arisaka, probably a Type 99.
"Bolt action, huh?" you say to nobody in particular.
"Well it certainly beats my M3A1 at a distance."
>You sling it over your shoulder and stand up
>Judging by the position of the sun, it's about midday
>You rub your stomach as it growls
>You haven't eaten since early yesterday.
>"Private!" Reckless yells from behind the rock
>"Come help me get my barding back on!"
>With a small sigh you go over and help her back in to her barding
>"Thank you, Private."
"Yeah, yeah. Let's get moving. I'm starting to get hungry here."
>"So am I. But what about those two?" she asks, motioning to the bodies
>Oh, shit
>"Leaving them in the open like this probably isn't a good idea."
"Alright, gimme a hand dragging them behind the rock then."
>With Reckless's help, you drag both of the bodies into a (somewhat) hidden position behind the rock
>"Guess that's the best we're gonna do." she says
"Eeyup. Hope nobody finds them."
>Reckless shakes her head sadly
>"I hate this war, Private."
"I do too, Sarge." you say regretfully
"I do too."
>>
>>30490818
>The rest of the walk back to camp is as uneventful as it is awkward
>Which means that absolutely nothing happened while remaining very awkward.
>You arrive during the late afternoon, when the camp isn't very busy
>At least you got to eat some good grub when you arrived.
>Warrant Officer McCain looks relieved to see you two walk into his tent office
>"You're back!" he says
>"Guess you decided to spend the night with the 4th Signal Construction, huh? I don't blame you, that storm got pretty bad.."
>It's then that he notices the bandages on Reckless's snout and side, and you looking down at the ground solemnly with shrapnel-holes in your parka
>"No.. No damn it, what's happened!?"
"I'm sorry to say Sir.. The 4th Signal Construction Company was wiped out."
>He stares at nothing in particular for a few seconds before slamming his hand onto his desk
>"Fuck! Fucking fuck!" He shouts
>"Those were good fucking men! Do you mean to fucking tell me that not a single goddamn one is still living?"
>You shake your head
"By the time we got there, they were all dead.. We got ambushed ourselves looking for survivors Sir."
>He looks like he's about to explode into a tirade again, but instead he slumps in his seat and buries his face in his hands
>After a moment he lowers his hands to expose his eyes, but he's still covering the lower half of his face
>"We just came out of a World War, in which we lost millions of good soldiers.." he laments
>"And now we're losing even more to a war that'll likely be forgotten 10 years from now. I know they don't really cover this damn war back home. We're fighting and dying out here, and we've got nothing to fucking show for it. Nothing! If the best minds in the world had set out to find us the worst possible location in the world to fight this damnable war, the unanimous choice would have been Korea."
>He let's out a heavy sigh
>>
>>30490822
>"I.. I'm sorry Private. Please don't go repeating what I said here to the other soldiers and I'll make it up to you. Morale is already somewhat low as it is.."
>"You and Sergeant Reckless should get some R&R. And you know what, you deserve a promotion after all this. Come talk to me tomorrow, Private."
>You and Reckless nod respectfully and walk out of the tent, leaving the Warrant Officer alone to his devices once more
>"Jesus.." Reckless says as the two of you walk out
"Yeah.." you say, at a loss for words
>"Come on then. Let's head to the tent. I'm looking forward to not having to sleep outside again, even though it was somewhat comfy."
>You roll your eyes humourlessly
"Easy for you to say, Sarge."

So did I, but I was just a bit disappointed not to see "holy shit, a talking horse!"

Because that's the default punchline for so many situations we talk about here, or at other pony fan related places.

Twilight Sparkle accidentally teleports herself to the Boston suburbs instead of to the supermarket. "Holy shit! A talking horse!"

I think it's funny that, though IRL Reckless was known for gentleness and sweetness, we've created pony reckless to be surly and crude. I know it doesn't line up, but I feel like if Reckless was as intelligent and sapient as a My Little Pony, she'd be more inclined to be surly and crude. I like it.
>>
>>30496096
She certainly has a shyness to her. Subtle at that. Like in the story, it takes some to open up. Not even that, she's shy at her advances with a strong tendency to hide emotions. A figure that the crudeness is more or less a shell developed during the war. Reckless doesn't talk much to anyone else as you will notice. Rather just one person. Shy personalities tend to do that.

Which actually surprises, I never would have thought of her hidden shy nature. Why, Sgt. Reckless always struck me as a cult (heh, like colt) of personality since every marine loved her. There a magnetic attraction for that horse.

>>30507578
Seems like she'd just force her way into the camp and the Marines would give her scraps because she was cute, and eventually she just became the boss of the place:
>Reckless had a gentle disposition and soon developed such a rapport with the troops that she was allowed to freely roam about the camp and entered tents at will, sometimes sleeping inside with the troops, and even lying down next to Latham's warm tent stove on cold nights. She was fond of a wide variety of foodstuffs, entertaining the platoon by eating scrambled eggs and drinking Coca-Cola and beer. Food could not be left unattended around her. She was known to eat bacon, buttered toast, chocolate bars, hard candy, shredded wheat, peanut butter sandwiches and mashed potatoes. However, Mitchell advised the platoon that she not be given more than two bottles of Coke a day
In terms of special treatment, she did get to dine upstairs at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, the day she first landed on American soil:
>For the Marine Corps Birthday Ball held that day, she rode an elevator, and then ate both cake and the flower decorations.

It's a little amazing that humans can eat all the stuff we do, isn't it?

I used to read the AiE threads and now I wonder if anyone ever wrote a story of ponies being horrified by a human's diet, even after he gives up meat.

>day 1313 in Equestria
>"Anonymous! Really, you need to change your diet!"
"We've been over this, Purpledrank. I can't eat grass."
>"No, that's not what I mean. I've been worried about you so I followed you."

"Seriously? I've been eating candy since I was an infant."
>"I'm not joking here, mister! Not only that, but I heard you've been buying garlic!"
"I put a little garlic in guacamole."
>"What's gua, what?"
"It's mashed avocadoes, chopped tomatoes, chopped onion--"
>you see her face go white under her purple fur
>"Are you trying to commit suicide?"
"It's just Mexican food. Jeez."
>"I think you and I need to have a talk with Nurse Redheart."
"I'm sure she's very intelligent and knowledgeable, but what does she know about human body chemistry?"
>"Well, obviously everyone knows these things are toxic!"
"Next you're going to tell me I'm not allowed to eat grapes."
>her eyes widen and she faints
>you poke her
>she's not faking it like Rarity, she really fainted
>you strain to pick her fat little horse butt up off the floor and drag her onto the couch, and try to arrange her comfortably

"She fainted."
>"A likely story. You probably drugged her. We know all about you!"

What if we just shift into /warpone/, a thread about ponies in war, and keep Reckless as the thread mascot? Might encourage more writers to come in, and write about horses in World War 1, World War 2, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the Cold War, etc. Or Reckless in Equestria. Or Reckless's sons.
>>
>>30531705
That sounds like a good idea.
I would also like to see some content about her sons, Fearless, Dauntless, and Chesty, in their respective wars. It could even be a good chance to make some tasteful and respectful stories based of war-memoirs by veterans and even historical documentaries.
To be honest reading about the real Sgt Reckless has been quite interesting: she is by far the most amazing animal I've ever heard of. It was a great chance to read into the history of the U.S. marines, the Korean War, the working of the U.S military, and just war horse in general.

I will also observe that during the early 1950s this is what veterinary surgery looked like:

http://lib.dr.iastate.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1647&context=iowastate_veterinarian

Scroll down to heading [6] in the left column, that's where it starts.

It's a rather dry technical depiction with no pictures, but the idea of doing anything like that to this adorable little talking poner is a bit nightmarish, and in my opinion isn't the sort of thing most readers would enjoy. I could be wrong, of course.

Yes, I'm aware, it's a description of castrating hogs. I am talking specifically of the state of veterinary anesthesia in the early 1950s and am talking about that portion of the description. Poor Reckless. No. Just no.

I'm not getting you guys
how bad can it be to put a horse under sedative, pull a bullet out of a non vital wounded muscle, and sew it back up after sanitizing?

even if reckless is absolutely in character a horse wont fuck up recovery if you just make it not want to stand up, which a stall with an inflatable mattress will do fine. The horse simply will give up trying to stand when it feels like it cant stay upright and doesn't see any threats.
>>
>>30547723

I do not speak for >>30541337 but I believe he is saying that prior to pretty recently, unless a horse was really, really valuable--a racehorse, for example--veterinary treatment for any kind of severe injury was normally a bullet in the back of the head, not surgery. This is correct, and it's even more correct in war zones, where a military hospital not far from the front lines, historically always understaffed, overburdened, overworked, and desperately short of supplies of every type, would not under normal circumstances be expected, nor able, to offer anything else to the handler of a wounded service animal like Reckless other than a stiff drink and a pistol with one cartridge. And we're talking about a work of fiction involving a talking horse and an Alan Alda character, but this is stretching suspension of disbelief.

As for >>30541659, read the linked document and note the state of the art in veterinary anesthesiology circa 1950, and imagine doing that to poor little Reckless, who would doubtless not understand what was going on, talking horse or no, and who would be squealing and crying and struggling the whole time until the chloroform took effect. My heart is breaking just thinking about it, and I don't think I, personally, would be able to derive much enjoyment from reading about such things.

It may be that I'm eccentric, or have an irrational attachment to cute little talking horses.

You said you didn't get it, and I'm trying to explain my perspective. I'm not trying to be a dick or a killjoy here. I'm just saying that the idea does not seem to me to be the sort of material from which one can create a story that will be pleasant reading, that's all. Again, I'm not trying to be argumentative or belligerent, I'm just stating my opinion.
>>
>>30547723
I dunno, man. It isn't like we're talking 19th century medicine here. Maybe they're just really perturbed by the idea of cutting up their little pony. It does take a special kind of person to be a surgeon after all, so I could see how they'd be uncomfortable with it. I mean it's not like you'd treat a pony the way you would an actual horse anyway.

"You ok, Corporal?"
>"They-- they shot my leg doc! Damn gooks shot my leg!"
"Damn, well even though you're an intelligent creature and not just a dumb animal that can't hold still so that their crippling wound will properly heal, I better just put you down because, lol."

exactly.

I spent some time this spring reading veterinary textbooks and doing other online research for a story I decided was too grimdark and depressing to be worth writing.

Horses do not react well to sedatives of any kind, much less general anesthesia. Morphine in particular tends to make horses go crazy--they can't talk, no one can ask them what's wrong, but it's very obvious that they don't find it pleasant. They become agitated, they kick, and if it's enough of a dose to be significant for pain relief they can stagger around and stumble into things and hurt themselves.

Horses die from general anesthesia a lot. Just from the anesthetic. Their body chemistry isn't as well understood as human body chemistry, and it's not fully understood why. But they just stop breathing sometimes. They go into shock and their hearts just stop. Or they can survive surgery and then try to get up in their stalls afterwards when a human would still be fucked up out of his head and not able to crawl if he had to, and they stagger around and trip and break their legs (depressingly easy to do for a creature that weighs half a ton and has those skinny, fragile little legs that horses do, even when not doped up on horse tranquilizers).

A century ago, when surgeons used chloroform and a handkerchief for anesthesia, there was less than a one in ten thousand chance of the patient dying as a result of the anesthesia (today it's more like one in two hundred thousand, because we have learned so much about it in the past hundred years). Adult horses today have a 1% chance of dying from anesthesia directly or indirectly. They tip over in their stalls and break their necks when the drugs hit them. They collapse in an awkward position that cuts off their circulation in one of their legs and can't be moved, because lol half ton horse, and the leg becomes gangrenous and they have to put the horse down because a horse can't live with a peg-leg, unlike a human.
>>
>>30553146
It's a shame that technological "progress" only gives us stupid shit like fax machines and suicidal robots instead of things we need, like better horse drugs.
>>
>>30553185
Well, it's better than it used to be, and every year they learn more.

Part of it is there really aren't that many horses in Western nations any more. Almost no one uses horses to pull plows any more, for the same reason that you have a refrigerator in your house that runs on electricity instead of an "icebox" that had an actual block of ice inside it to keep your food cold that had to be drained and changed daily, and you buy milk at the supermarket instead of getting it in glass quart bottles from a milkman who brings it on a horse-drawn cart. There used to be tens of millions of horses in the US. Now the numbers are uncertain but it's surely a tiny fraction of that--they're expensive pets now, that only a few people can afford. Even experiments of the kind that they do with human patients are difficult with horses because there are so few potential patients for any new experimental drug, it's not like for humans where they have millions to choose from.

They do learn more every year. Things are better today than they used to be. There are drugs that are used on humans that horses seem to tolerate, though the list of drugs that can be used on humans and the list of drugs that can be used safely on humans is not a 100% overlapping Venn diagram, if you take my meaning. There are veterinary sedatives that cause humans to hallucinate and become violent, for example.

But it's much better than it used to be--which is yet another reason the idea of a story about such things happening to poor little Reckless in 1952 makes me cringe.

Well I've been on a merry trip down a rabbit hole of old whenwe websites to discover that the Rhodies probably had the last mounted infantry battles in history with the Grey's Scouts.

They revived a 19th century equestrian unit in 1975 and set about using them to track terrs and patrol vast areas of land and indeed saw combat in the bush.

True, though a lot of cart horses and farm horses had short, miserable lives, and ended up getting made into glue and canned dog food.

The horses that remain are very pampered, in comparison to a hundred years ago. They live long enough to die of old age, among other things, and they're petted and fussed over instead of being whipped to pull a plow or a delivery wagon.

Was this the thread where we talked about the ethics of genetically engineering animals to have human-equivalent intelligence, the ability to speak, and so on? a talking pony waifu would be wonderful, but not if she died of old age at 25, or was unable to support herself because lol no hands
>>
>>30557165
Modifying animals to be capable of human-equivalent misery and despair would be among the worst things we've ever done.
I can't think of a single system of morality that would condone such a thing.

>>

We already create creatures capable of human-equivalent misery and despair every time people have children.

The upside is that they're also capable of human-equivalent pleasure and joy, because human, plus, especially now, people are able to take precautions--genetic counseling, proper nutrition, and so on--that weren't previously possible for most of human history, to reduce the likelihood of creating a potato with an extra chromosome.

Doing this with animals, though--to create creatures with human(ish) minds, but with short lifespans, no hands, no way to support themselves if something happens to the one taking care of them, seems rather inappropriate.

There have been greentext threads about this, which someone screencapped and put on Derpibooru:

https://derpibooru.org/tags/hassenfeld+pony

Short version: in the near future, Hasbro begins selling genetically engineered talking pet creatures based on MLP characters. They have short lifespans and are nearly disposable, despite being human-level intelligent and capable of suffering. Lots of people apparently buy them as living Fleshlights. That they are programmed to imprint upon and love their owners no matter what is almost worse.

>>30559671
Never mind the scientists, look to the people who would fund the research. You know there are people who would line up, money in hand, for a living, talking Twilight Sparkle (or insert your favorite pony here) clone, no matter if she dies in a few years, because they'll make more.
>>
>>30559702
>We already create creatures capable of human-equivalent misery and despair every time people have children.
That's a necessary evil; people without children of their own, like gays and Angela Merkel, can't make good long-term decisions because they don't have any personal investment in the future.
Inflicting consciousness on innocent animals, just because we can, wouldn't be necessary - just evil.
>>
>>30559923
>People without children of their own, like gays and Angela Merkel

You could have chosen a better example there. The people who need to be most invested in the future are the people who believe they have no future. I bet that if every hopeless NEET was provided with an encouragement pony, We'd see workforce participation skyrocket.
>>
>>30559941
No matter how many Applejack clones you make, Americans won't do backbreaking agricultural work for dirt-eating poverty wages like Mexicans will.
Market forces apply to the price of labor, too.
>>
>>30559702
>Imprinting
That's what always bothered me about those Hassenfield threads. I know it's all for kicks, but it seemed that everyone thought that this was okay. If I was to have my very own pony, I'd rather she be her own person rather than her be engineered to be a slave. "I love you" is meaningless if she is programmed to say it.

Now if they were more like regular pets, where they love you if they treat you right, that'd be better. But even then, that'd be setting them as a lesser species when ponies are clearly intellectually similar to humans.

The Hassenfield idea was doomed to devolve into degeneracy because it forsakes the notion of equivalence between man and pone. The manager of the threads knows what his threads are for, so I never bother reading them.
>>
>>30559995
Indeed. Supply and demand. Human labor is a fungible commodity that is bought and sold just like pork bellies, barrels of petroleum, or bushels of wheat.

Take away millions of Mexicans willing to work for dollar an hour under the table, and the wages of agricultural workers magically rise to whatever the buyers and sellers of that commodity--labor--can agree on.

It's called a free market and it has its good points and its bad points. It seems to have outlasted competing systems in places like Russia, for whatever that's worth.

Horses were used for cavalry for centuries after the invention of firearms and well into the 20th Century. The US military had horse cavalry units in the Phillipines until 1942.

Only a very well trained horse could tolerate being near gunfire. I don't know what the training involved, if that's what you're asking. Horse-sized earplugs? I don't know.

About the future of this thread: I think that, after this one bumps off, should we make /warpone/ immediately, or should we wait a bit (probably about a week or so)? If no warpone content is ready, I don't want to make a bumpfest of a thread. It looks bad, reflects poorly on the thread, and lowers morale. Plus, Reckless deserves better. So that's why I think waiting a while is healthier for these threads overall.
