One could argue that it's not the idea of LGBT rights that are contentious, so much as the way they're disproportionately forced and represented by the media in [current year]. If that's the case, maybe it's that people see the work itself as a mouthpiece, more so than the character -- simply by being an arm of what is (to them) a tired media agenda.

And again, it isn't LGBT stuff in general that I'm talking about. It's calling conspicuous attention to that stance, in a "please look at this issue" kind of way. Calling attention to it as an issue is admitting that it is one, which means, by definition, it's contentious -- even if you personally believe it's a cut-and-dry affair by your own morals.

If you start going into "the intent of the artist posting" in order to determine what is and is not a mouthpiece, you start walking into some really, really murky waters where stuff gets tagged based on the opinion of the viewer, and not the content of the image being tagged.

That's why going based off of implicit messages when isn't a good way to determine when to add tags, which is why the mouthpiece tag shouldn't be on that image.
It's not an explicit mouthpiece, so it shouldn't be labelled as such.
