Huh, I never really took AiE as self inserts. As weird as that may sound to some of you. Maybe because I was first exposed through the Flutterrape meme, when it was new, and it was more like reading someone else's spaghetti story. You know, a bit of light roleplaying like it actually happened and the poster's bitching about the experience on this board.

That lead me to reading actual multi-part greentext stories, but even then I couldn't really insert myself into these Anons. He was pretty consistently characterized throughout these stories as a contrasting element, a comedic straight man, and not really a brony. A grumpy guy who doesn't want to be there, and never will. He'll always be that fan-created character to me, unique from myself. I'm not sure if I would have gotten into it if I were exposed to it through today's /mlp/. It's not that I've never seen some bad and blatant wish fulfilment greens, but that I don't immediately think of them when I hear of Anon greens. I never saw them as the majority either. I think the real problem is that general politics spread the concept out into multiple threads. We didn't really need that.

I avoided AiE up until a few years ago. Then I realized they are more "honest" and real than any [human] story on fimfic (which i gave up on after reading 5). Like, those slave fics where sex DOESNT happen reveal more about the psyche than any therapy could. Apparently a lot of anons want to give abused ponies baths, or just have a friend to do geology with. AiE is a lens through which we view the part of ourselves we find lacking.

EqG is pure degeneracy though. That was unavoidable. There's no way to have a healthy or cathartic EqG thread that doesn't stunt emotional growth.
