“A spy?” You ask, as she stares you down with all the fury she can muster. Which is actually a lot. It’s interesting… Her eyes don’t flicker or drift at all. She’s totally fixated on you. If you weren’t so 100% cool it would be a bit disturbing. “I mean, I’d need like cool gadgets and shit to be a spy. Damn, that would be cool, though… Get me some lockpicks, smoke bombs, that kind of thing.”

She’s gritting her beak by the end of this and points at the exit to the tent. “Uncle Grimthul!” She insists. “Please escort them out!”

He looks at her with a sigh. “Go,” he says. “I don’t think that’s-”

Her head snaps over to him and it’s an almost palpable force. He flinches. “You said I was in charge, Uncle Grimthul,” she says. “You said I was in charge of this whole team.”

“I believe what I said was that you are RESPONSIBLE-”

“And I don’t like the look of these two,” she says, eyeing you and Dusk up suspiciously. Dusk sways back and forth a little, watching her back and infuriating the intense hen with her seeming nonchalance.

Grimthul looks over at you apologetically. “I’m very sorry,” he says, “My niece is apparently in one of her moods. How about we meet up another time and you can tell me how great I am then?”

You nod eagerly. “Ho shit, I would absolutely LOVE-” You say, and catch yourself. “Sure, sounds like a plan. See you around.” You give him a casual salute, unable to stop smiling as he returns it, and you and Dusk head out of the tent while Go begins to storm around and look at everything intently.

“She’s a piece of work,” Dusk says as the two of you start back over towards your tent. “She could probably use a nap and some chips.”

“Chips?”

“I like chips.”

No arguing with that. “Eh, she’s got passion,” you say with a shrug. “Maybe she was being a bit of a bitch, but I’ve seen some pretty dramatic racers in my time. Nothing new. Plus, I will absolutely turn this around on her the second that I get a chance.”

Dusk shrugs in return. “I’m going to head back to my hotel now,” she says, and spins around in a slow, lazy circle. “I’ll be in time for the race.” She waves a wing at you. “Good night, Comet.”

You wave back at her. “See ya tomorrow, Dusk!” That done, you head back over towards your own tent. Heading inside, the place is totally different from the blank slate that greeted you when you first arrived. Tables have been set up everywhere, the car, still hidden under black tarp to your eternal annoyance, has been unloaded. Lug Nut pops out from under the tarp to check one of the pages while Tweak fiddles back and forth with an abacus.

There’s also an earth pony standing nearby. She’s a mare with a red coat and a purple mane, her rump emblazoned with a socket wrench. She starts as you enter the tent, taking a step over to give you a bit more space as you enter.

“G’evening,” she says with a sleepy smile, offering you a hoof. “Name’s Ratchet Racket. Nice to meetcha, just hoping to meet you and your guys, but they seem busy.”

You shake her hoof with a claw and look back over at the two of them. “Yeah, I thought most mechanics were crazy like this. Constantly checking and double-checking.”

The earth mare shakes her head, hair low enough to cover her face. “I mean, most of them maybe, but I’m a grease monkey and a mechanic and usually this kind of stuff psyches me out, y’know? I think about this and I start to panic and do a lot of stuff that doesn’t help. Nah, I have different ways of making sure I feel safe.”

“Huh. Well good on you,” you say, giving her a casual thumbs up.

She smiles back at you. “I’d probably better be heading out, though.” She says, and turns around. “Make sure your mechanics don’t freak out too much.”

She exits the tent, but the task she’s left you might not be possible under the circumstances. Lug Nut’s motions are getting more frantic by the second, and Tweak has started to sort through the papers at an ever-increasing rate. You start to slowly back out of the tent, but before you can get too far, Lug Nut spies you and her face absolutely lights up.

“Comet!” She says, rushing over. In your umpteenth unsolicited hug of the evening, she wraps her hooves around you. Your coat immediately goes from “a few splotches of grease” to “absolutely soaked”, but Nutty’s enthusiasm is rare enough you can’t afford to squander this, and you let the momentum carry the two of you into a spinning hug, your wings fanning out to help you balance.

She’s giggling like crazy by the time the two of you set down. “What’s up, Nutty?” You ask.

“It’s done!” She says, practically dancing in place while she shoots looks back over at the covered car, and you look back at it with a quirked eyebrow.

“It’s done?” You ask. “I mean, like I know that the race is tomorrow, but throwing together a car in two weeks is far and away more impressive than anything you’ve ever done.”

She flushes and tosses a hoof. “I reused a lot of ideas from old projects to make it better, and I didn’t special order many parts…”

“The steering will probably be iffy and the suspension will probably have to be entirely reworked after the race is done,” Slight Tweak says, “I’ve also noticed twenty-seven imperfections within the paint job, but that wasn’t a priority.” He shuts his book, some almanac or another.

“However,” he says with a small smile on his face, “It is an absolutely excellent vehicle. I could not have done half as well with twice your shoestring budget, and I will be proud to work on the vehicle in the middle of the race.”

Lug Nut looks about ready to die at this point, face blood-red. “Alright, alright,” she says, “Cut it out you two. Sheesh.” She looks over at you. “I’m almost ready to show you the car, but first we gotta talk about your personal weapon.”

“Nunchucks.” You say without hesitation, and feel sheer glee as in seconds Lug Nut has returned to her ‘this mare is going to be the death of me’ expression. One of your favorites. “I’ve wanted them since I was five,” you add by way of explanation.

“Comet, you don't know how to use nunchucks,” Lug protests.

“I can learn!”

“By tomorrow? You’re going to give yourself a concussion.”

“Worth it. You think those jackasses are gonna see it coming when they jump at me and WHAM! Nunchucks!”

Maybe it’s time to stop. You think you can see a vein pulsing in her forehead. “Just…” She says, burying her face in her hoof. “Just think about it. Something easy to use. Something defensive. You can’t exactly be out and about attacking other racers, you need to steer the car.”

You chuckle and look over at Tweak. “How about you, what are you doing?”

He walks over to a case on one of the more carefully maintained tables and pops it open, revealing what looks to be a crossbow with two strips of yellow on the button. Like all weapons in the Haymaker, it appears to have been modified to trigger the safety features and remove a pony from the race, rather than harm them. Thus, instead of a sharpened bolt it has a thick black metal rod. Four more of the rods sit in a harness in the case, designed to be worn for easy access to the ammunition.

“It’s magnetized to attach to an enemy’s car and disrupt its magical aura,” he explained. “The car runs worse and will be more susceptible to other tampering.”

You nod. “Makes sense. Gonna snipe some motherfuckers for us?”

“Ah, no,” he said, reaching up to adjust his glasses. ”I am not an excellent gunner. I tend to become easily frustrated when dealing with many conflicting factors, and therefore I,” he considers his words for a second. “‘Wing it.’”

“Huh. I hope Dusk has something to use.”

“She probably does. It kind of comes with the territory of working security, and she should have mentioned it otherwise,” Lug Nut said, and suddenly looks very worried. “I really hope she does…”

“She’ll be fine,” you assert.

Lug Nut looks concerned for another second, but crosses over towards the covered car. Meanwhile, Slight Tweak replaces the crossbow and starts the impossible task of organizing the seventeen or so disheveled piles of paper sitting around the room immediately. The forces of chaos were always destined to win in racing, you think.

Breathing in and out to steady herself, Lug Nut looks at the car. “Okay, okay,” she says, “I tried to make it so that you would like it but I wasn’t sure if you would like-”

She’s panicking. You step in. “The car, Nutty!”

“Okay, okay!” She says, looking nervously at the car once more. With a mighty heave, she yanks the cover off to reveal…

What does your car look like?
What kind of weapon do you want to use?
And what are your parents like?

The car is bright racer red with a classic cruiser look, though the body and roof are likely modified for collisions, boarding and weapon mounting.
Our weapon of choice is a flail. It's got a nice reach on it, a chain to wrap around something if needed. Our own personal comet of punishment for any fool hopping on our ride.
Our parents are a former athlete turned actor griffoness who got us into fitness and a film prop designer and maker stallion who got us into cosplaying.

The yellow tinted one because of the ram plate. It's a messy pieces together car, but it works. And damn will it work in the race.

You can really hurt yourself with a nunchuck if you're not careful. Why not a find tonfa? Or police baton? You can punch, block, and hit people with it using a single arm. Granted if you understand how to wield it. It's simple.
>>
>>30374196
She also needs a few ranged sidearms in the race. Just in case. Some smoke bombs to disrupt other races. Bags of mud to throw at windshields. Maybe a knuckle duster.
>>
>>30374196
Can we have some road way spikes to throw on the road? For the people who are behind our car.

Tasers and stun guns. Good for close range.

>And what are your parents like?
We came from a big family, and a house that was always busy with relatives and distant cousins dropping in and out. Our parents were loving, unfathomably so, but a little careless and very loose. If someone got lost, they'd trust that whoever it was would find their way back in a few days. Dad always said adventure was good for younglings.

I like the simpler Tonga or Baton. A flail or something like that could easily get pulled away after a hit. Yank our arm off or something.
>And what are your parents like?
Bad is fine, but I'd prefer not sexually abusive bad. Mom was a drunk and Dad slept around. They got divorced but both still made a half assed effort to be there for us once in a while but had too many problems of their own.
>>
>>30376081

I also agree with having Uncle Speedy touch molesting Comet as a foal but to add to >>30376037 I say that when we told our parents about it they told us that we either have to fight him off ourselves or be faster than him. With helped Comet grow into the (mare?) she is today.
Also voting that since Comet is a hippogrif that she is also infertile like a mule which might be why her parents were never worried about her getting pregnant and why Comet isn't worried about putting herself in dangerous situations since she'll never have children to leave behind.

First of all, thanks for keeping up a month old argument, you really are doing a great job reminding everyone that you just don't fit in here.

Now first of all differentiating art styles is something a normal human brain should be able to, and no, those aren't just minor details we are talking about here, there are differences in anatomy, line thickness, line cleaness, and the the all so obsessed about details.

What really buffels me here, is the fact that no one seems to mind the fact that these people actually use the argument of, 'How should I know that if I'm not an oldfag' on 4chan. People even spend time going trough pictures and making this into some sort of game!

CYOA, you are enabling this sort of behavior, you have become a breeding ground for newfags where they fester and learn to justify their retardness.

It's down to preference. Aliased means hard pixels like on the left, while 99% of art would use something like on the right.
>>
>>30376869
Ah thanks. I will keep that in mind when trying to recognize art.
>>
>>30376860
you probably do.

The tldr of aliasing is that pixels are squares and you can't make clean diagonal lines with squares, they'll always be jagged edged. anti-aliasing solves this by averaging out the pixels along the edge, blurring it so your eye perceives it as smooth.

It's not as bad as you imagine it to be. It's why the Comet should wear one of those padded coats that motorcycleists wear. Or clothes.
It's a pro and con thing. It only stuns when it makes contact with they body. It'll probably worth through a t-shirt, but not leather armor.

>>30378056
That is not viable at the moment. Something like that would require an accessory slot, and research. Both of which we do not have the time for.

So it's either a stun gun, tonfa or tasers.

Note: pepper spray is not viable. Open window + wind = get fucked in your eye.

The Tundra mentioned there being dragons. Dragons breath fire. The MC is highly resistant.
Imagine feinting injury from getting hit from a gout of fire. We wait for them to get closer and *BAM* we stab em in the eye. Or if they realize the MC is still alive then they can engage the dragon in combat.
>>

>>
>>30378972
You're why QMs don't bother asking us things anymore.
>>
>>30378968
Sure. I personly never minded your combat but that may just be because I was not really in it for the combat. I just hope it does not turn into set up the exact same plan at the start of every match as the extent of player input.
>>
>>30379027
Well, to be honest, the same exact plan was because it was something that was always picked out by the majority of people who wanted to play face and be technical.

I'm going to fix this by delaying your choice to what you want to do, that way you won't have like a beginning portion, but flow into a direction and then either flow into other different choices. I don't know if I'm explaining it well, but we'll see.
>>
>>30379059
No I don't think people were getting too repetitive I am afraid they will if we go too gung ho on plans instead of actions.

Like I said though I don't much care.
>>
>>30379082
To clarify I am well aware that it was basically choose an action and then the next few things are just decided by the qm. But it never bothered me because I just accepted it as a limitation of the type of combat we were in.
>>
>>30379103
Let me type something out then, though it'll take time to develop the full idea, but you'll see why.
>>
>>30378938
I was thinking of the DnD adult sized dragon. Not that guy. Lord Torch is exceptional being the Lord of dragons and all.

HA! You're too late! I finished my bottle of whiskey just moments before I typed up that last update!.. Well I guess I still have beer but I don't really think that counts.

Also fun fact, that picture I posted in here is actually one of the concept pieces I made of PB from before Spearmint was introduced since I had originally set up the quest so that running into PHotobomb or what would later become Spearmint first was determined by which path player took through the facility. Also another Fun fact is that I actually thought that the players would have ended up killing Spearmint when they found her, but players somehow found a way to knock her out without cracking her over the skull with a wrench. I had also thought that Spear, being alive would cause most people to drop the quest because of how much info she was able to just give. When she survived I thought she would ruin the entire quest. Now though, I'm really glad she lived.

Same reason for being there, same profession, the all real sign would have had more to do with her reporting though. Also if PB was met first she would have been a much different character, But since she was met after Spear and Spear was still alive she was written the way she was so I could try to use her for what I wanted to do with her... At least until some other stuff happened in the quest. A lot of stuff has changed as this quest has gone foreword.

Get a cane and beat her with it before tossing it back to the nice Yak. When she's thought tenderized, throw her back into the ring and tie her arms to the turnbuckle or ropes.

Jump on top of the turnbuckle opposite from her and start monologueing. Rant a bit about how your gonna give her the horns.
You actually give her the horns. Charge into her with your helmet.

>She's pretty much stuck there as you get up on the opposite turnbuckle.
"You know, you're the one who started this, hitting me with a steel chair before the match even started. What's wrong, you can't take it as well as you dish it out, Aria? It's fine though, because it's almost over right now, because I'm going to give you the horns!"
>You jump down and prepare to give her the horns, but Sonata's apparently jumped the guardrail and unties Aria, pulling her out of the ring.
>Meanwhile Adagio tries to get into the ring, but you run and smash her with your helmet, gut first, knocking her out of the ring.
>Things seemed to have gotten a bit more complicated right now.
>But you have a helmet.
>Adagio rubs her gut for a moment as she gets up, telling Sonata to put Aria down.
>The two of them grab weapons from the ringside area, Sonata has a chair while Adagio has the rope you were using.
>Both of them climb on opposite sides of the apron, and you wait.
>Suddenly, Roseluck runs down to the ring, carrying a baseball bat as she rushes at Sonata, swinging it wildly.
>Sonata drops down, as Adagio yells and berates her.
>Adagio drops down, only to go over to Aria for a moment.
>Roseluck hands you the bat.
>She hops on the turnbuckle and dives off, hitting the three siren ponies with a big crossbody before rolling Aria back into the ring.
>Look, an Aria, and you have a bat.

A few things that have changed off the top of my head,
I thought that Players would have opted to go down instead of up which would have made the quest a lot more puzzle focused since there would have been more interaction with the various A.I.s in the facility making it so that player would have had to use knowledge of the limitations and standard operations of the various A.I.s to get around them and use them. Also in the better kept lower part of the building there are a lot more locked doors that need to be opened with various items and procedures.
Also I had gone as far as to ask /o/ for some boring cars to stock the garage with if player had tried to escape though it.
Another thing cut was customizing and maintaining the mech, I though that players would have tried much harder to keep the mech longer but instead of going through the path that the large monster had opened for the mech players decided to leave it behind. I had also planned on making the magic absorbing crystals a lot more prominent since they were originally much more important, but player haven't really gone towards any of the areas where they are used.
Also I had planned on peppermint dying a lot more,

A major influence for the way I designed 11-54 was the 1998 platform game "Heart of Darkness". 11-54 is partially based off of the notes from a similarly styled pony video-game, Called Altare, I was helping put together with some people from deviantart before I started Qming here. The game involved a unicorn wandering through the underground ruins of Altare trying to escape and using spells aquired through the game to solve puzzles and avoid monsters that would be able to kill out hero in one hit, sending you back a screen or two a'la Heart of Darkness. The notes from that game are canon and the Magic absorbing Crystals are originally from the Altare Valley from that game that never was.
Putting that aside I though that players would die a lot over the course of the quest, to the point where I had actually planned out puzzles that required it, but With the introduction and survival of Spearmint, that mechanic became less viable as time went on and Spearmint probably contributed to the newfound resilience of Peppermint, or players are just smarter than me... or I'm a big softie and don't have the sack to kill Pepper as much as I had planned. Hard to say.
>>
>>30379894

I think it's partially you getting your chub soft.

>Putting that aside I though that players would die a lot over the course of the quest
From a players perspective I'd be down for that. It's be just like Dark Souls. From the MC's perspective I think it would suck, but Pepper would eventually come to terms with it and use it to her advantage.

I dunno. What were your parents like was an out of nowhere question I guess.

The talk of rape in shattered planes does seem to indicate /cyoa/ is getting more open to edge though. Along with the proposed intimidation tactics ln the other fallout quest and a few other things I am too tired to remember.

I had been meaning to say we were getting more open to edge a few days back but I forgot. Not that I mind it though. I like a little edge.

It was respectful of tone back then. Nobody ever suggested edge exceeding what the QM had already done. If the QM mentions rape than everything rape and down is fair game.

Now a happy fun Mario Kart quest can get serious suggestions of sexually abusive parents. Nothing wrong with that, but maybe it's not the right quest to suggest that for.

Anyway, the edge faded for a while, as all things do, when the popular styles of quest changed. We grew farther away from /tg/. Plot took a back seat to characters and interesting MCs became more interesting to the general than what was happening to them. Slice of Life became a feasible genre. For a while, edge became less common. Then, just as before, fashions changed. Now edge is back, but it is not the same as it was. Our future is uncertain, and only time will tell if things will settle down eventually or we are doomed to meme edge.
>>
>>30382701
I don't think it was handled differently, but I'm also not sure what they've convinced themselves is different, and I don't really care either.

Yes they did. They were just either called shitposts and ignored, or jokes and not taken seriously.
>>
>>30382955
Okay, fair enough. Point is everyone knew they were shitposts and nobody worried about them happening.
>>
>>30382847
I suppose that makes sense. For sure that happened in Shattered Planes.
Rape and down seems a funny term to use considering how far down the edge totem pole rape is though.

I don't think anybody was trying to be edgy or even mature with the parental abuse stuff though. They just thought it would be interesting.
>>30382889
I suppose it makes sense that more character focused stories would have less edge. The change of interest focus also explains a lot about how people got so hyperfocused on characterisation when criticising Darkest Hour.

>Colors are defined by human perception.

Colors are defined by the wavelength of light in the visible spectrum, and are therefore not up to interpretation. If light wave X has a wavelength of 500 and all green light falls between wavelengths of 470 and 560, then the light is defined as being green (unless you're Hijacker).

Unless you move the goalposts and claim that all words are merely a byproduct of human interpretation and therefore nothing is (((really))) what we say it is, in which case I invite you to shove a subjective cactus up your subjective urethra.

From Wikipedia:

Color (American English) or colour (Commonwealth English) is the characteristic of human visual perception described through color categories, with names such as red, yellow, purple, or blue. This perception of color derives from the stimulation of cone cells in the human eye by electromagnetic radiation in the spectrum of light.

No, it's partially purple because purple light is scattered through it more than any other color besides blue. Our eyes are just kind of stupid at detecting that combination, but still smart enough to include it in some capacity. If they didn't, and we 'only' saw blue, the sky would have a more greenish tinge than it does.

Not every opinion that disagrees with you is a meme. Some people actually just disagree with you. Like the person you responded to. And me.

Is the edge stuff not a meme?
What we call edge usually is indeed edgy (expect shattered planes. There is nothing edgy about that you autists) but we just take the word of the few people that played the quests. We rarely read the quests to see the edge ourselves.

Things don't have to be untrue to be a meme.

Simple answer:
Edgy is where dark themes and cringe intersect

I disagree
