Considering Starlight herself said she liked Maud because she was weird, it makes she was able to succeed where other Ponies perhaps weren't able to with Maud. Even if the subject matter of Rocks was a bit weird, Maud does have other traits like her bluntness which Starlight seemed to enjoy.
