Writefags' Guild

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Let’s get hypothetical.

You’re a writer who’s been going at it for a bit now. You really enjoy what you do and put your blood, sweat, and tears into each story. One day, you decide to post it in a random thread to get some feedback.

Just one problem: no takers.
You wonder if you should even bother writing; you decide to quit and move on to something else.

If that story applies to you, then hold your horses. If all you wanted was feedback, to improve your writing skills a bit, or maybe just see how others do it, then you’ve come to the right place. There are a few rules, however:

>Posting the story directly in the thread is preferred over a link to Pastebin, FiMFiction, etc.

>One story at a time.

>Don’t be a dick or asshole when reading or critiquing.

>All stories posted within the thread must be pre-written.

This thread’s purpose is to encourage writefags all over /mlp/ to write. We’re laid back here. Post what you want as long as it’s pone related. We’re not all “STOREEEYS ONLY!” We discuss topics such as writing techniques, interesting tropes, and bring forth story ideas. Let’s have fun.

>“How do I cure my writer’s block?”
Magic.
>“FUCK YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION!”
There’s no one way to cure it, but, if you can’t write, you may as well read stories. There’s more to writing than writing; there’s reading too, and that helps. Check some of the links above.
Try the following (keep in mind this won’t work for everyone):
-Figure out when it’s the best time for you to write.
-Fap then write*.
-Write anyway, and allow yourself to write shitty stories. More often than not, the block is the fear of it being bad. That’s what editing is for.
-Seriously, drink coffee. It’s a writer’s best friend.
-Listen to music while writing.

*Unless you’re writing clop, then listen to your boner.

Yay. You're back
>>

Yep, I'm back. I lost the last thread accidentally, so I can't link it, not that it's probably visible now anyway.
>>
>>30348346
The last thread died before I had time to see it in the catalogue. Found it in the archive with just one bump. Don't remember if it too was put up during odd hours.

Anyone here checking /lit/ btw?

/lit/ is not a funny board.
I did however find one funny post (not counting the ones I made).

Holy shit. I thought I was the only one. I used to frequent it a bit for a short time, but haven't been in a while.

So what editor do you guys use to write?
I was thinking of using Scrinever to divvy up posts and cause it's aeshetically pleasing and got some good features that'd help me write, grammar check, spell check, etc.
But that's mainly just to make sure I'm not making too many mistakes

>So what editor do you guys use to write?
I'm using FocusWriter. The name implies it puts the focus on the actual writing and after changing some settings it does.

I use it in full screen mode with a homemade theme (white text on black background) and I've turned off spell checking and other annoyances.
It has next to nothing when it comes to features, yet it has everything I need (except grammar check). Depending on what keyboard I use, I even find the "typewriter sound" useful as an additional feedback for if a key was pressed or not.

If I need to do a pretty layout with various fonts in preparation of a PDF, I have to use Scribus or something else.

>Haven't been at /lit/ for a while.
I'm sure you haven't missed anything. I'm pretty sure I pasted the only useful post as a screencap.

Another thing that irks me: Why are they obsessed with counting pages instead of words?

The whole industry worldwide has "words" (instead of characters) as a common measurement of length in pretty much all languages, yet they use none of these but instead talks about pages, that is a horrible way to try and measure the amount of text.

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, are all words and have many similarities between a thousand languages across the globe, so if you translate from Chinese to English, the word count will be a better measurement than characters.
Yet these people insist on counting *pages*... for anything from the size of a literary piece to reading speed.

(Can't post links since we are a containment thread.)

Man, I never heard of these
>>
>that story you started years ago that was going to be your magnum opus, but will never finish
Which one is it for you?
>>
>>30352809
Pages are an easy number to round. No one wants to read for a specified time, then go back, count the words they read, and figure out the time. Counting pages is far easier, and consistent enough to use. Not all pages have the same word count, but they're roughly the same, and after doing a lot of reading, you start to average out the page lengths, and get to a slightly more consistent measurement
>>
>>30354132
a little league story anon, I'll never ever finish it.
I know I won't,I know it won't ever get the ending it deserves.
>>
>>30354974
Well, I guess counting pages per hour instead of words per minute can be convenient.

I would still recommend anyone who wants to become a professional in the business to skip all talk about pages and move on to words or wpm. (Or if you just want to hang out with professionals at cafés and pretend to be part of the crowd.)

It's rare to hear professionals talk about pages, even when discussing progress with a specific book. In that case they rather mention "one quarter" or "3/5" than talk about pages.

Sometimes they count characters, and then it's a good thing to check if they count characters and punctuation or if they also count whitespace. Some types of tariffs usually include whitespace (like translations into English).

Some "amateur" editors on the Internet can be seen charging for their services per page. Usually demanding double-spaced 12 pt but no more details than that. Choice of font can make a big difference in the final tally, with Times originally designed to fit more text into less space.
Someone who properly formats a lot of dialogue is going to pay a shitload more than someone who makes walls of text with reduced margins on the side.

There are many tricks you can use as a writer.
And if those doesn't help, there are always words.
