It's about expressing emotion. You're not causing Twilight to be sad - she is feeling sad on her own. You have the duty of presenting her sadness as accurately and powerfully as you can.

Look at it this way. The stories you write - you are not creating a situation. The situation already happened, and you are recording the events.

Alternatively, you realize that she is not real and does not feel feelings, thus you write your story to achieve the effect you desire.
