>>30331773
Most predator animals still have to have some problem-solving capability. It helps hunt down prey that tries to hide. Though omnivores have to have better skills both to avoid predators, hunt, and scavenge in hard to reach areas.

The difference in intelligence therefore is pretty stark. The eagles waste a lot of energy to tear down the tent and to get at the food inside. A raven would know to pull the zipper and simply walk in the front door because it uses less energy and it gives them less chance of being caught.
>>
>>30331819
If any reasonably intelligent animal has the time and energy (i.e. sufficient food supply) to waste they'll fuck around and play.
These eagles found something interesting and played with it. It wasn't just about food.
>>
>>30331773
They're kinda smart, but ravens will outright trick Eagles into getting them free fish basically
>>

This.
Those eagles were in a group of allies and had no reason to believe anything dangerous was in the area. Eagles also generally don't have to beware of predators or anything like that, so they're used to being all confident. They were playing.

Gustave is a very small bird, most griffons, or at least most female griffons, are significantly larger.

They're not as tall as humans, obviously, being quadruped and all, but by most estimates (not that I necessarily agree with any of them) female griffons would be as tall or very close to as tall as a human while standing upright, but be a lot bulkier.
>>
>>30342557
>>30342677
>>30342683
Personally I subscribe to the headcanon that adult mares generally stand at about 4 feet tall; Hobbit height. But when you consider their horizontal bulk, that's still sizeable. Not quite the imposing height of a human, but large enough to mate and cuddle compatibly without worry of crushing your partner.

I don't like the HFYish headcanon that humans are this strong and enormous thing compared to ponies. The Equestrian universe has a lot of elements of high fantasy to it, and to take away a lot of the danger by making humans exceptional takes away a lot of the world's mystique, to me.

With that said, since gryphons are larger than ponies, they would be quite an imposing bulk of predatory muscle to a man. Not insurmountable, but certainly very dangerous in a physical one on one against an unarmed man, considering they've beak and claw. Humans would need to make use of their own strengths; tools and weaponry, to be able to have a reasonable chance against a catbirb. Otherwise you better get lucky or be gryphon chow.
>>
>>30342875

If you ascribe to the headcanon that 4 feet really is 4 feet, you run into the issue where a pegasus accelerating 500 yards in 2 seconds isn't enough to impress Dash. A human wouldn't stand a chance against a creature capable of accelerating one tenth of that, the force they're exerting on their own bodies is well beyond anything a human could muster.
>>
>>30342712
Birds really are nature's biggest assholes.
>>
>>30342875
Don't confuse humans being kind of massive by Equestrian standards as HFY or being much stronger. We're also big and imposing to most species on the planet, wolves included, but obviously we aren't built for 1v1 with most other apex predators.

>>
>>30342911
I like to think the cartoon physics is some kind of belief or emotion based passive magic that affects all creatures. This would carry over to anything that doesn't simply burst into flames or implode upon arriving in Equestria. This isn't to say that a human could move that fast but that one would become extra durable and stuff like that.
>>
>>30342953

Doesn't seem to be, we've seen what happens to a pony when they're drained of their magic. They become lethargic, but they don't fall apart at the seams.

>>30343056
Then you have something like this.
>>
>>30342831
I remember seeing a rough analysis of how big a pony was (loosely based on similar assumptions, i.e., adult mares in the ~4ft range) that concluded an average mare would probably be between 110-150lbs. Adult stallions might be slightly more, with the Princesses outmassing humans significantly.

Of course, there's a degree of error there if we assume cartoon accuracy: At least a third of that weight is in the head, which is basically unheard of in reality - their necks would collapse. Most actual Earth lifeforms hold a much lower percentage (in humans, around 7-8% - and we're above average). Furthermore, completely identical mare and stallion models in the show make it all screwy (the ~40lb variation is his way of trying to account for different body types).

So we're not immovable colossi to them, but they're not quite as large as us either.

>>30342875
Agree with most of this.

The scary part about mankind isn't that we're goliath strongmen compared to ponies. That we've conquered our world and become the unchallenged rulers of it despite being smaller, softer, and without natural weapons or powers is what makes us different.

That's also true for ponies though, isn't it?
They don't have claws, scales, talons or a fiery breath, but they still dominate most of their world.
They've got magic, granted, but magic is a science, with spells studied, taught and stored in libraries.

They have utter and total control of the sun, moon, weather, and growth of plants though. Even before the Princesses, each of the three tribes had a solid grip on one of those three.

Those allow them to create the ideal conditions for growing civilization, and negate some of the largest typical disasters to strike it (drought, storm, famine, etc). It also gives them a net bonus when fighting: Magic can and will fuck you up, and I don't just mean horn lasers. All of those catastrophes they can avoid can also be inflicted on others.
>Magic is a science
Some small fraction is. A lot more seems to be an intuited gift.

If we stretch a bit farther, teleporting - even if only used by a bare handful - meant it was much easier to keep their civilization together and send messages, and the superhuman (super-equine?) intuition cutie mark talents seem to provide is another serious step up.

And yet for all of this, their civilization is a patchwork of cities and towns with vast wild, untamed areas in between - a sea dotted with islands of development, in which monsters lurk and periodically emerge to ravage a city or two.

But it's their culture and ingenuity that brought them to that point, not their raw, ferocious nature.

Their magic and cooperation is what allows them to create ideal conditions, those conditions didn't exist before culture, the tribes were fucking useless on their own, and were almost annihilated by the windigos. It's only in recent history that their magic (and technology) has progressed to the point where they could be considered the apex of creation.

>their civilization is a patchwork of cities and towns with vast wild, untamed areas in between
I'd say it's closer to the other way around. Equestria is largely a thriving utopia, with a few untamed areas like the Everfree dotted in. Outside it's borders is a different matter though, as ponies are a fairly young culture they haven't had time to populate their entire world. Badlands and the nearby Ghastly Gorge is still filled with monsters, and the Frozen North is still inhospitable.

Been awhile since I saw that ep., but didn't it earlier show Fluttershy making nice with some fish, and then later she's feeding identical looking fish to those weasels? Shit, I mean, little kids will mostly overlook that, but that's pretty messed up. Funny, in a dark sort of way.
>>
>>30343706
I highly doubt it.
Unfertilized and/or unwanted griffon eggs though? Why not? Ponies already eat chicken eggs, so the taste would be palatable for them.

I imagine there's also a niche market for griffon or pegasus down pillows, blankets, etc.
>>
>>30343857
Fluttershy has been feeding fish, yeah.
If I'm not mistaken she's feeding fish (but it could have been ducks or somesuch) in the first Gilda episode, when Dash and Pinkie are spying on her and decide not to prank her.

She doesn't interact with fish in the same way she interacts with other animals though, she actually treats fish as animals while she treats most other animals as something closer to friends.

> But it's their culture and ingenuity that brought them to that point, not their raw, ferocious nature.
We can't actually say that, given that we don't know what early pony civilization was like. The first time we see them, they're already the equivalent of iron age humans at bare minimum.

That said, the way marks manifest in such a deeply personal manner seems more indicative of an inherent-to-the-species process, rather than a function of their civilization.

> I'd say it's closer to the other way around. Equestria is largely a thriving utopia, with a few untamed areas like the Everfree dotted in.
I don't know, it feels to me like most of Equestria is very undeveloped and regularly sees incursions. Stepping away from a town immediately takes you out of civilization; when the Apples go to find their family, for example, they immediately quit the roads and move to rough terrain in a convoy.
> Badlands and the nearby Ghastly Gorge is still filled with monsters
The badlands are in the east, while the Gorge is in the West, though. They're not that near to each other.
