They had to make an effort to publish MLP in order to keep the licensing for the other Hasbro comics. They thought hey, it'll be for a year or so, it's a shitty pony thing, nobody will buy it, and they can go back to their latest crossoverfest and Hasbro's requirements will be met.

IDW loathes having to kee[ make pony comics to keep things like GI JOE/Transformers, which is all they really want to do. Every year past what they thought would be the minimum one is torment.

That it's their best-selling series makes them even more salty. Thus, the systematic efforts to degrade the quality of the comic, casually neglecting editing, hiring turd artists like Fosgitt, and so on. They keep trying to shove it below the critical sales line without seeming like they're sabotaging it, because if that's proven, Hasbro will yank all of their licensing for "damaging the brand" and they lose their favorite toybox and most of their titles of any note.

Constant quality degradation. At some point it reached the bottom.

- I don't know where exactly start being wrong, but "Reflections" story arc was perhaps beginning of the end. At least it was huge disappointment with fuckton of fallacies.
- Friends forever issues were a mess. Only some of them were spot-on, as it featured dynamics between showcased characters. Rest however it went opposite way.
-- For instance Spike x Celestia is muh personal GOAT, as it did everything in right way. On the other hand there is Spike x Luna. It hardly featured Luna, as Spike and "dragon district", and OC dragoness had more focus that princess itself. The issue hardly featured dynamics between Spike and Luna.
+ Fiendship is magic I remember being good overall, so nothing to complain here.
- GOD FUCK FORSAKEN FOSGITT. Dear Lord, I cannot comprehend his art syle, where everything is so wrong. You have terrible proportions with big heads, bipedal ponies and lazy drawing.

So in the end, having this comic run, there might be up to 20 good issues. A little more of "mediocre" one. And later a lot of bad issues.

That was on 2014 and we already are on 2017, where his skills have deteriorated at the point he isn't even drawing backgrounds and lazily steals art or reuses drawings to cut as many corners as possible.
And that's not counting how after 3 years he still refuses to draw anything on model or even resembling the cartoon, something that all other artists have no problem doing despite all of them having their own different drawing styles as well.

There's also Georgia Ball who felt to frustrated after Fosgitt ruined her script with his crappy art that simply decided to quit writing for IDW.

Jenn Blake drew one comic's interiors and a bunch of covers but was forced to quit because she put her OC in one shot, which supposedly isn't allowed. She didn't know about the rule, and it is routinely broken even by people who can't behind "but they were on the show too" like Cook/Price. In reality the other staff were upset that she was too close to fans/acted like one too much. Took advantage of her having early stages of brain cancer so they knew she wouldn't fight.
