I always figured there were two reasons:

1) Post-apocalyptic stories always seek to answer a basic question about our future: Will we live up to our ideals and aspirations, or will our obvious flaws as a species catch up with us and we'll tear ourselves apart? In the case of Fallout, the answer is "a bit of column A, a bit of column B. Mostly B, though." In the case of MLP, the ideals and aspirations are much greater, which makes the fall that much more brutal.

2) Simply put, adventure. The worlds of Fallout and Equestria are both great settings with huge potential for it, and if you smush them together like in FO:E, that potential is magnified to a ridiculous degree. This naturally tickled the imaginations of a lot of writers and readers.

Keep in mind that back when Fallout: Equestria was just starting to be a thing most fanfics were fairly short affairs, one offs or just a few chapters, and most weren't as story driven as FO:E. Basically the circumstances around the fic were absolutely perfect, if it had been written two years later it wouldn't be even remotely as well known as it is now.

It seemed like it was inevitably going to happen though and that she was set up to be a successor of Celestia and possibly Luna somewhere down the line. Twilight's name fit the theme of the royal sisters and her talent as well as her potential were unmatched. I just thought it would be the show finale.

Early 2012 fag here, while the fan content isn't being churned out as much anymore, the show is infinitely better. Cheer up, there are plenty of incredible things going on in the fandom now if you stop to look at them. The "Golden Age" was fantastic and all, but there's a lot to be offered now.

I entered early 2011, April, I think. It must have been just after the S1 finale because I binge watched the season. I remember when /mlp/ was first created, but I only gave it a quick look since it was still rife with mass, angry shitposting as was to be expected. I ended coming back regularly probably around a few months later. I went through the Scruffening, the initial hatred and rejection of Twilicorn and EqG by this board to their eventual love and acceptance.

I was so happy and autistic back then. Now I'm just bitter and autistic.

I managed to break apart from the show after season 3, officially deleted my folder around 2014-15ish. Only officially back on the ride sometime this April. The nostalgia got me back in, the old brony music, and fan art, remembering how golden the first 2 seasons were. I'm still really just a fan of that era. That said, you'll be back around. It was actually "The Mare at the End of the World" that officially broke me back into the fandom, how incredibly emotional and weirdly peaceful that made me feel. It made me remember that this fandom was much more. It's artistically phenomenal - the art, music, writing, etc. I can't think of any other fandom that yield this much art.

People took the stories and turned them into a deeper substance, and it made a perfect landscape.

But perhaps I'm looking too deep into it, I am officially autistic again since April.
