Okay, this is about the time I was planning to close the voting for the new fics list, but so far only 5 people have voted on AU and only 1 person voted on Tragedy. This is kind of disappointing since last time, even with the more complicated voting system, we had 8-10 people voting in every poll.

Would it help to leave the voting open the entire week, or has everyone who wants to vote already done so? Should we vote on only one category per week, instead of two? Or, if people really don't care that much about the new stories list, I'm fine with calling it off entirely, and maybe turning the nomination site into a general-purpose "/fimfic/ reviews" site.

I believe the correct nomenclature would be "Her Imperial and Royal Majesty" in Cadence's case, seeing as she's technically a sovereign Empress.
Which would make Shining Armour's styling "His Imperial and Royal Majesty", seeing as he's both Prince Consort of the Crystal Empire and Prince Consort of Equestria.
Examples of this would be Frederick III, who was Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, and styled "His Imperial and Royal Majesty", while his wife was "Her Imperial and Royal Majesty".

Prince/Princess is kind of a difficult term in English, because it covers stuff that in other languages have separate terms. Look at the difference between Prinz and Fürst in German.
You could make the case that Celestia, Luna and Twilight are all "Her Serene Highness", like Hans-Adam II or Albert II, but I wouldn't object to seeing them all styled "Her Royal Highness". Especially if you want to make a distinction between Twilight and the sisters. It depends on how hard you want to go on the honorific autism.
They've been called "Royal" enough in the show for it to work.

That said, the only real rule when it comes to honorifics is that there aren't any rules. A bit hyperbolic, but the point is that they've always been unevenly used, especially across different cultures, languages and traditions. The British monarchs adopted the Imperial title of India, but to my knowledge just used the Royal styling regardless.

Like heraldic "rules", it's a mess. Do what works in the story.

So what is fimfic's JS licensed under? We could fork it and make our own fimfiction, with blackjack and banners.

If the license doesn't allow that it would have to integrate with existing code instead of being a simple file replacement, which is definitely possible but sounds more error-prone.

Not much to tell. A couple of guys got the great idea to make their own fanfic site, fictiondock.com. They set up an alpha version of the site, invited a few people in the thread to try it out... and nothing happened. Turns out that eight people and no stories on a bare-bones site doesn't exactly make for a robust platform.

I just checked the site, and apparently they let it expire. Nothing of value was lost.

This is a good fic but not much of a thriller. I'm about halfway through and there's only really one scene that maybe qualifies. Most of it is more like SoL set in a depressing AU Equestria.

While he's definitely fucked things up more than he's improved them, there have been some good changes. Moving the featured box out of the banner did give readers a ton more info on the fics, adding updated fics next to new fics, etc.

I think his biggest problem is the lack of getting and using feedback. There's no mockups to show off (because he's a coder, not a user experience guy), no user testing to see what works and what doesn't, and no admitting defeat to the userbase because of god knows why.

It took three years before he finally realized merging favorites and tracking was stupid and undid it. Everyone told him that the very first day.

And that's your usecase. Most people actually care about the presentation of the site, including me. Sure, I can download the epub and read it in a pure CLI environment in my configured emacs, or even download the txt and just use a pager like more, but instead I choose to view it in a website with decorated presentation, running in a browser using a graphical desktop environment. And stripping all the decoration because it's not part of the actual story removes this choice - do when that gets done, without a good enough justification, people understandably get upset.

No, but I like the general look and feel. It makes me feel comfier. I see it every time I load a page, so I see it a lot while browsing. If I find a story and it's surrounded by happy pictures of ponies and a colourful layout, it will put me in a better mood and might make me enjoy the story more than if I found it on a plain white background with a dull, utilitarian layout. Even printed books often have detailed covers, especially high-quality expensive ones.

Again, there's literally no downside - it's not like I care about the extra 500kb in this day and age, and it would probably be cached anyway - so why remove it?

You know what'd help it even more? If Fimfiction Advanced merely had some very basic usage telemetry. Your client would send out one message to a central server each day that you use Fimfiction with Fimfiction Advanced enabled. With the ability to opt out, of course. And you would be correct. Tragedy is probably the most abused tag on the site. While Tragedies will generally have a sad tone to them, what makes a tragedy a tragedy is the ending.

Quoting from Google, a tragedy is "a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character." Usually, that downfall is brought by the character's actions.

Edmond Dantès gets revenge, but loses his family because he was so focused on getting said revenge. Victor Frankenstein creates a monster which ends up destroying his life. Like, dozens of Shakespeare's plays.

All of the terms are vague, aren't they? It's likely on purpose.
Tragedy, loosely, does mean sad. But it also implies a variety of themes - loss, melancholy, moodiness and emotion. If you want to be pedantic, it's based around suffering.
You could call the ultimate fate of Romeo and Juliet tragic, for instance, even though it's the defining romance. More romance, less tragedy. But most novels from the first world war will be mainly tragic, being propelled by the tragedy of war and the suffering it causes, only interlaced with sparse romance and comedy.

What I'm writing will be the other way around. Tragedy will be its defining motif, overshadowing the mellow romance that comes before (and kind of after).
So, simply put, do you know of any fic that's definitely tragedy? Because I could name a few which had tragic elements, but were ultimately romances or thrillers in the end.

In the strictest sense, tragedy is a story of a protagonist who tries to fight fate and loses. He is destined to lose. It can be quite sad, but sometimes it can be uplifting - there are cases of tragedy where the protagonist accepts his loss and uses it as motivation to change his life for the better. At tha tpoint it stops being a tragedy and becomes more of a morality play.

The original greek tragedy was a catharsis for the audience. They got to see someone else's failure and revel in the knowledge that it wasn't their own.

Also worth remembering that every antagonist in every comedy would see the story as a tragedy.

As the other anons have said, a tragedy is defined by having a tragic ending - that is to say, a bad end for the protagonist. But more than that, it's only a tragedy if that bad end is brought about by a flaw of the protagonist's. A character who gets shit on isn't tragic, in the literary sense; their downfall has to directly tie into their tragic flaw (sometimes also called a heroic flaw, it means the same thing).

Our old starter kit is a good place to look for effective tragedy. Let's take a look at two in particular - whether they're the best in the set is up for debate, but I think they offer the clearest examples of what a "tragedy" is:

Here, the main character's tragic flaw is Fear of the Unknown. Twilight Sparkle shows up and acts friendly but confused and a little oblivious. The reader knows that she's genuinely kind, but the protagonist lets his fear of the unknown drive him to consider the absurd-to-the-reader possibility that she's a supernatural horror that must be destroyed in order to save humanity. His religious fundie friend couldn't/wouldn't have tried to kill Twilight on his own; it's the protagonist's surrender to his fear that makes Twilight's murder possible.

This is a good example of tragedy, because it actually contains two, and both are examples of that most classic of tragic flaws, Hubris. First, there's the dragon: it thinks it can interpret the prophesies better than the dragon mystics, and embarks on a suicidal pony-murdering spree based on a half-cocked idea of what that prophesy states. Then there's Luna, who also succumbs to Hubris at the end of the story by attempting to thwart the prophesy by smashing the egg - which, the reader knows, doesn't change NMM's outcome one whit.

All right, we really need to decide what we're going to do with the voting. At the very least, it seems like we should drop Thriller and probably most of the other small categories. But even six votes is not that many, and it makes me think we should maybe call off the voting completely, and try something different for the best new stories list.

Here's a different way we could go about building the list. Suppose everyone who wants to help with the list picks a category to be responsible for. Then we all take, say, a month for each person to read and review stories from their chosen category. At the end, each person picks a few winners for their category, and we combine them together to make the final list.

Does this sound like something people would be interested in trying? The results wouldn't be as representative of the entire thread, but it should be less work for each person, especially since I expect most will pick categories they're already familiar with. The list would also wind up with fewer categories on it (only one per person), but if it works out well, we could run the same process over again the next month to add another set of categories.

Lengthy, yes. Not necessarily romantic OR casual, but definitely one or the other in the sense that I love build-up and plot, it makes the sex way hotter.

Fetishes are trickier for me, but mostly they're fine if they can be well-justified in context and don't require me to massively suspend my disbelief; for example, you can totally sell me on a futa story, but not if your sales pitch is "they have a penis just because." I still love horsewords, it's just life has grown more consuming since the early days of college. I think that's the number 1 reason people have left the ride or gotten less involved. The fandom peaked right when everyone that initially joined was still in college. I still do read horsewords, on occasion, but it's been a long while since I've read anything longer. Lately it's been oneshots or the odd chapter of some fic I suddenly remember to have read at some point.
Reading horsewords has become the lowest priority amongst what I read. Which on one hand means that I'm reading more books, but on the other means that I don't really get invested in fanfiction. I just feel much less driven and interested.

But the biggest change is that my lack of drive has taken a toll on my writing. Not that I wrote much before, but I always wanted to. It was very common for me to plan out stories, think about pone when doing mundane stuff, and so on. Little actual progress, lots of actual will.
These days I just don't know what I'd even write about. When I think of story concepts, it's never pone. I don't see any reason to write fanfiction, aside from the fact that I know someone will read it.

In addition, I've long since fallen out of sync with the fandom at large. I still barely manage to keep up with /mlp/, but I'm slipping even there. I don't really know who the hot authors are these days, or if there's anything interesting going on anywhere in the fandom.
I think habit more than anything else is keeping me in at this point, though I really do want to try to rekindle that interest of mine. I do still watch the show, after all.
