Helps keep curious outsiders thinking that its a good show and a friendly community there too, I guess.

Usually I'm not in favor of long-running shows changing the character lineup Degrassi did this a lot for example but for FiM the Mane 6 have sorta run their course already. Think about it, all of them have already reached or nearly reached their happy ends and going by this season so far the episodes involving characters other than the Mane 6 have proven to be much more popular than the ones that do. Doing the other characters allow for different setups and stories that wouldn't be possible with the current main character set, that's why people like Glimmer having her own episodes, she's different and it's interesting to watch her do things her own way separate from what we expect.
