According to Michael Kelly, the global publish/director for Hasbro:

If we go by this statement, the comics, books, EQG, etc are considered canon, but they happen in between episodes, making them insignificant to FiM's plot, the events of EqG did happen it just doesn't affect anything. Anything EqG related won't be brought up in FiM because it's not only irrelevant, but to avoid continuity errors.

The rest of Equestria doesn't need to know. It never needs to be brought up in conversation. The time Twilight spends at a coffee shop in the human world effects no current-running storylines in Equestria.

So her taking a cross-country trip away from the portal will never in any way impact her being late to an event in Equestria because the writers make it historically so. Some character in some other dimension taking a dump has zero causation to Tirek escaping Tartarus in this one.

That's the gist of it. We never see Twilight taking a dump but that doesn't mean she doesn't have an asshole. What she does in the mirror world during her free time may never be shown in FiM, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

So while EQG may not be important in the grand scheme of things concerning FiM, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Just because an episode centers around Manehatten doesn't mean Ponyville ceases to exist. Just because the show revolves around the ponies of Equestria doesn't mean there aren't adventures of another sort happening in the griffon or minotaur kingdoms. The world and its dimensions are connected as one, just because we see a snippet of one place in time doesn't mean the rest of the universe doesn't exist outside of it.

Just like IDW update their universe with new castle and alicorns and Glimmer, studio producing the EQG also reference the events of the tv show by showing Glimmer in their series.
