That's called padding anon, they don't have to be saving the world but for a story to exist there needs to be conflict. "me and my friends went to the shops then went home" is not interesting, engaging or gripping and no one wants to see a movie about it.

If I were emperor of all pony i wouldn't have bothered with the whole gaia everfree shiz and just made the movie about Sci-Twi accepting, with Sunsets help and her friends support, that just because there is a dark side to her doesn't mean she is a bad person and that just because she fucked up she isn't beyond redemption. They could of even had some deepest lore about Human Luna in there too.

I think we shouldn't be hard on Candyass. I personally felt like a lot of the plot points were just done better, like how magic was constantly playing a role in the movie to accent the high school shenanigans and how we see that Twilight was actually convinced to stop what she was doing instead of just getting a rainbow lobotomy. It just felt like they wanted to flesh out some of the plot points more than the original movie.

Though I will admit Horse Twilight trying to figure out human shit was pretty cute.
