One of the things I think I dislike most about the ending to this special was the exact argument Starlight was using to turn Juniper over:

Starlight had to give Juniper the utmost assurance she would be forgiven by the Mane 7, and that was the primary reason Juniper was scared to do it was fear of not being forgiven. But that's just the thing that pisses me off is, you SHOULDN'T be expecting forgiveness. Starlight should have been arguing to let them out because it was the right thing to do and she was doing wrong by everyone, not promising that all of her mistakes would be instantly swept under the table. When Sunset, Starlight, and just about every other villain who's been redeemed was redeemed, forgiveness was never a given: it was either earned, or graciously given without needing to be asked. Never a bargaining chip. Juniper should have been prepared for everyone to rightfully hate her for what she did and *still* do the right thing regardless and take any forgiveness offered as a blessing, not for granted.
