To me it never felt like there was any main protagonist of the series. The spotlight was always shared between the mane 6 for the most part.

This season hasn't really seen Glimmer become the main character, but rather she's sharing the spotlight with the rest of the mane 6, and I'm ok with that.

They could simply delve into the history of equestria through the eyes of celestia and luna. It could be darker, have more continuity, we could actually learn more about starswirl as well as the two princesses' pasts. It could be what the older fans have been clamoring for to make the show fresh. And then for younger fans, they could delve into the future with a new main cast while still having cameos of the mane 6 or giving them minor roles. After all, the future is often brighter than the past. What better way to play it out?

I welcome the change in protagonists, I mean Twilight's already mastered the whole friendship thing to the point that she changed species and became the sole princess of friendship. Continuing further with her at the helm wouldn't advance that much as it used to in previous seasons.
