They are cute. Hope things goes well for this thread.
I have to say that I am a little surprised that your general went down while the Batpony general kept moving forward. Mothponies are so much cuter, man. Then again, and this is something that nobody can deny, this fandom has a lot of people who wants edgy-looking OCs.

>Day 11 in moffquestria
>Gemini has decided you are his boyfriend
>You're working up the courage to tell him you don't swing that way
>No really. You are.
>But you just haven't gotten around to it yet.
>For some reason, Squeak sends for you, saying it's super important
>a matter of life and death
>Gemini is asleep on your sleeve
>Meisa made you this great evening robe but it's really baggy
>There's no fucking chance you'll get it out from under him without waking him up
>Fortunately(?) there's a pair of scissors within reach
>You use the scissors to cut away the part of the sleeve that's stuck
>It turns out there's a stray breezie trapped in Squeak's house
>She's just not being rational
>After fruitlessly chasing after the thing for probably twenty minutes, failing at the last second each time because Squeak SQUEAKS and either startles you or the breezie or both,
>you fetch Golden Corral
>There's totally a pun you could make about all this but you decide (for once) that life is awful enough as it is
>Meisa is going to be ticked at you, you're tired as balls, and if you make a pun about needing help "_corral_-ing" this little horsebug you'll probably be at it all night
>*SQUEAK*
"No, Squeak. They don't sting, either. Where do you come up with all this?"
>*SQUEAK*
"Oh. Virgo. Well why didn't you say so?"
>*SQUEAK*
"Well I was trying to catch this damn thing while you kept on talking so forgive me for not picking up every detail."
>*SQUEAK*
"No, that's termites. Termites bore through wood. Breezies don't do that either."
>*SQUEAK*
"Fine. I'm going as fast as I can here. Goldie should be here in a minute."
>Goldie had been in the middle of getting something into the oven when you'd gone by her place. She makes her entrance. Squeak seems to calm down somewhat.
>Before either of you have a chance to start coordinating, Squeak has drawn an elaborate set of diagrams onto some paperboard.
>You both look curiously.
>>
>>30186221
>They depict you (comically wearing a baseball mit on one hand and a boxing glove on the other) and Goldie, with her tongue extending towards the breezie
>Throughout the panels, you're both seen chasing the little bugger from room to room
>According to it, you're supposed to punch the wall to startle the breezie after which Goldie chases it to the next one (with her tongue, of course)
>After making your way to the last panel on the bottom of the sheet, where the drawing of you successfully has the breezie in hand, you bust out laughing.
"Hohoo. Good one Squeak, we're both a bit frustrated right now but it always helps to add some levity. Thanks for that."
>In return, she gives you an extremely cross stare. Goldie deadpans and blinks, looking at you.
"Y-you're serious..."
>*SQUEAK*
>The brown mothpony passes you the catcher's mitt and the boxing glove. It's not clear to you where they were lying before they appeared in her hooves
>Shaking your head, you fit them on as best you can
>Squeak is scribbling again
>She approaches the breezie with the thick square of paper
>For a moment you're worried she's just going to swat it dead
>Instead, she thrusts the surface toward the breezie, a few feet away, who looks at it quizzically
>With what looks like a furrowed brow, it studies the piece for a moment before its eyes widen and it starts to shake
>It looks to Squeak pleadingly
>She smirks and shakes her head
>It then looks to Goldie who grins devilishly
>Before you know it, the chase it on!
>>
>>30186266
>Each time, at Squeak's command (SQUEAK), you hurl your padded fist haphazardly into the wall
>And sure enough, each time, the breezie flits away at the last second, to then be pursued by the gold-colored mare into the next room
>Finally, you reach the last room of the house, winded, and worried you'll have to repeat the whole obstacle course again in reverse
>You stand in the doorway, heaving for breath, as Squeak shimmies past you with Goldie just behind her
>The breezie is flat on its back on the couchback, staring at the ceiling and paying them little mind
>As they draw closer, they move more sneakily until at last they're both looming up behind their little victim
>*SQUEAK*
>The breezie is shaken from its reverie and careens through the air away from Golden Corral
>With your right hand, you're able to catch it squarely
>much better than you might've expected you could, you might add
>In a second, Squeak has snatched the mitt off you and now flutters toward the door
>Having the front door closed on you before you can follow, you watch beside Goldie through the den window as Squeak releases the breezie into the moonlit night sky
>*SQUEAKSQUEAKSQUEAKSQUEAK!!*
>"So, Anon."
>You look over at Goldie.
>"How's that for an interesting night? Your best one yet, I assume."
>As usual on the occasions she decides to talk, there's that husky tone, as if there are suggestive lines you might read between.
"Well, I guess I can no longer say that vore drawings don't have a place in the world."
>"Mhmm."
"By the way, you wouldn't have-"
>Goldie chortles.
>>
>>30186341
>"Anon, if I had caught 'em, I think they never would've left."
>Again, this was her being suggestive.
>Finished angrily squeaking curses and general words of warning, Squeak comes back inside
"Are you satisfied?"
>*SQUEAK*
"Good."
>*SQUEAK SQUEAK*
"Yeah, I know, my sleeve's messed up and I'm wearing an evening robe. You said this was urgent."
>*SQUEAK*
"At least I put pants on."
>*SQUEAK*
"You wouldn't understand."
>Goldie took a normal tone for once.
>"Well, custard's probably about done. Glad I could help, Squeak."
>*SQUEAK*
>"See you 'round, Anon."
>You watch for a second as she coolly makes her way off, a faintly seductive sway to her gait. Squeak notices your gaze.
>*SQUEAK*
"Well, of course I like her."
>*SQUEAK*
"What do you MEAN I come off as GAY?"
>You continue to bicker with Squeak until the sun comes up before realizing you really should get back to bed.

So, how big do you picture moth ponies to be? Actual moth size, or typical pone size?
I'm not too familiar yet and it seems to differ from what I can tell

Hexferry's creator said she was small enough to infiltrate bee's nests, so they're probably not much larger than an actual moth.

I'm thinking of shoehorning moth ponies into my FoE PnP campaign just because they're adorable. So, how do you think a moth pone would fare in the world of Fallout Equestria?

Wouldn't they just mutate into giants like most of the bug-like creatures in Fallout?

>>
>>30195356
The cucks who made a rework of the system made bat ponies a playable race. If bat ponies haven't mutated I'm sure moth pones could survive in Stable's and such. Plus breezies aren't mutatedeven if they aren't touched on or mentioned once in the fic.

>Moon Dust is hanging out outside his house on one of those tanning chairs.
>It's not sunny obviously, but he looks really comfortable
"Hey, man, what's up?"
>Moon Dust just looks at you and takes another sip of his drink before setting it back down
>He's wearing sunglasses. From what you can tell, they're really just for effect.
>You decide not to say anything, and wander over anyhow.
>To see if you can't get him to say something back, you grab his drink and take a pull off the straw.
>As soon as you have a mouth full of the stuff, you wince and gulp it down rather than spitting it out.
>It looked a lot like Long Island Ice Tea but it's 100% way stronger than that.
"Jesus, Moon Dust what IS this?"
>"Brandy and everclear. Why?"
>Damn this moth can really hold his booze, apparently. What ever happened to the innocent naïve Moon Dust you so fondly remember?
>You stutter before you're able to get your next words out.
"Isn't it like, a little strong?"
>Also it's a pretty weird combination but again, you keep that to yourself.
>He lifts his sunglasses and glances at you a second before dropping them back onto his nose.
>"I don't think so."
"But you used to get drunk so easily!"
>You can't tell if he's just trying to be extra cool or doesn't want to talk to you here. His reply has a hint of distance to it.
>"I guess that's true."
>You don't want to belabor the point but it's going to get to you.
"Is this, uhh, your standard drink now?"
>He giggles. It's a hint of the old Moony.
>"Yeah, actually. Amata drinks these. I've really come to like them!"
"Amata..."
>You mutter, making a note to confront her about this.
>"Huh?"
"S-sorry. Nothing."
>You sort of awkwardly wait for Moony to invite you to pull up a chair or something. A few moments pass. You're not sure he actually will. Finally:
>"Anon?"
"Yeah?"
>"You're blocking my light."
>>
>>30197138
>You realize, where you were standing, you'd cast a faint shadow in the moonlight, which is coming from a fairly small sliver in the sky at the moment.
"Oh, uhm. Sorry."
"M-mind if I join you for a bit?"
>"Sure."
>Not offered a seat, you decide to just sit on the patch of ground next to the recliner he's in.
>It's weird you're not able to really tell if this is how cool people hang out or if you're just succeeding in being tremendously awkward.
>Eventually, Moon Dust breaks the ice a bit.
>"So, what's been up?"
"Well, you know. Helped out on the caravan this time. Saw the new Changeling encampment. Kinda something. They've come a long way, as a group. Nobody told me it would be such a long circuit, though. I was pretty homesick by the time we got back."
>"Homesick?"
"Well... yeah."
>"But aren't you always homesick, Anon?"
"Oh. Well no, I meant- you know."
>Moon Dust lifts his shades again and gives you a long gaze. There's not much reading into it. Puzzlement, maybe? If you had to guess?
>He eventually lowers them again and adjusts himself a few times on the recliner, then silence.
>It takes you a bit but you feel it's your turn to say something.
"Moon Dust?"
>"Yeah?"
"Are we alright? I mean, you and me?"
>He looks up at the sky as he composes a response. It's a super quiet night. You think you hear an owl taking off from across the square.
>As the sound fades, you fail to conjure even the slighest bit of noise from the village around you. Long, mute crossbeams of still air bridge the expanse between your eardrums.
>"You were gone a long time."
>You fish for thoughts but find none.
"I uhh. I'm sorry."
>He shrugs.
>"No sweat. 'Didn't bother me none."
>You ponder that expression. It's definitely either a Goldie thing or Butterscotch thing. He doesn't usually talk like that.
>Or does he?
"Hmm."
>He cracks a bit of a smile.
>"Were you worried about me?"
>You fumble.
"Y-- I try not to like, underestimate you. I know you hate that."
>>
>>30197149
>"So you WERE worried."
"I don't know. Is homesickness just worry?"
>You're an idiot and you're sure he knows it too.
>He shrugs.
>"I wasn't lonely, if that's what you're thinking."
>/Damnit Moony, stop putting words in my mouth./
"I-I didn't say that."
>"Good. Cuz it wouldn't be true if you did."
"Right," is about all you manage.
>He tilts his head.
>"So it's settled, then."
"What?"
>"I wasn't the one who was lonely."
>You notice your throat making an uneasy noise for a second before you shut it down.
>Moon Dust's left forehoof drops off the side of the reclining deck-chair.
>For a second, you're back on the same wavelength; you reach up and clutch it in your hand.
>The slightest smile hovers on his features beneath the weak light of the sky. It's a torture you wouldn't give up for anything.
>The air isn't that cold but you sniffle and suppress a shiver. There was a time you could have lost almost anything and somehow soldiered on to the next moment. Now, though, the world is small and you cannot not bear the idea that its pieces might spread apart or drift away.
>You notice shortly that he's employed his other forehoof to push on the far side of your head, gently encouraging you to lean in toward him.
>At the end of the motion, you're now tilted over to the right, your ear now resting by his waist, head cradled by the curve of his hip.
>He swirls at the near side of your temple with his free hoof, leaving a circle of tingling in its wake.
>You shut your eyes and listen to the faint noises from his insides as they work away at the startlingly-strong booze he's been sipping at.
>You nuzzle into his hoof as it caresses your cheek, the fluff on his belly also ticking a bit with the rise and fall of his breaths.
"Don't let me do that again, okay?"
>You hear the rapid trill of a glass being drained with a straw, followed by the tumbler being set gently back down.
>"Don't worry, Anon. It's still the same old me."
>>
>>30197168
"But you're-"
>"So 'cool' now?"
"I-"
>"Anon, I've always been 'cool.' You think these glasses and a little practice drinking makes me a changed mare?"
>His hoof traces lightly across your brow, making it that much harder to do much other than keep right on melting there, much less make a cogent counterpoint.
"I feel dumb."
>"I know."
>You're about to protest when the hoof – briefly withdrawn – returns with one of the icecubes in it, and continues to trace a path about your head. You withdraw whatever effort was about to go into your retort as the cube leaves a chilly wet trail on your scalp and your try not to yelp.
>You take a moment to just control your breaths as you get used to the sensation wandering about your skull.
>"And I still make puns too, you know."
"Wai- huh?"
Before you know it, Moon Dust has tipped the remaining bits of ice in the glass out with one hoof as he pulled at the band of your underwear with the other.
>Shrieking, now with briefs full of freezing little ice-pieces you hurtle up to a standing position and curse as you fling your shirt up and pull your slacks down to get away from the freezing wet icecubes.
>>
>>30197182
>Moon Dust snorts with amusement, locking eyes with you with the maddest possible grin you could imagine.
>Facing toward the southern edge of town, you're blinded a brief flash and hear a minor chorus of laughter coming from the trees nearby. You pick out Virgo's voice and that of Caramel.
"H-hey!"
>Thinking fast before the camera can be readied again, you grab the crotch of your briefs and shake sharply, causing the bits of ice to clatter out onto the boardwalk and into the garden. You then pull everything back up.
>You puff like a bull and make ready to lunge for the tree, blinking a few times to urge the residual spots of light to go away.
>"Goldie, go-go!"
>A dull blur makes its way by you along with the sound of rapidly beating wings.
>The moth whizzes past, brushing you for a split second with a wingtip. This combined with the speed she(?) was moving leaves you blinded once again by the ensuing dust.
>Your attempt to recover the camera failed, a hail of curses and laughter crack forth before the remaining two-or-so moth ponies who'd been hiding in the tree flit off in different directions
>With a wet crotch and a thoroughly killed emotional moment, you march the few paces back over to Moon Dust, who's still trying to contain his mirth.
>After waiting for about a minute and a half for him to do this, he finally does, dabbing at watery eyes with a pastern.
>You half-huff half-sigh.
"Moon Dust?"
>"Yeah, Anon?"
"Is there any more of that stuff? I need a fucking drink."

These are great. Obviously Hexferry on the left and maybe Tarkin (?) or Little Light upper right, and then Meisa or Sequin bottom?

I'm not placing the other two. I'm guessing Birch in the hat and then Virgo in the jacket?

Gosh, I remember back to when that was originally posted. Hexferry on left, Sequin on top next to her (I think), and the rest are generic characters I'm pretty sure (even the one sewing, but I could just be super wrong on that).

Here's a moth consumed by the cordyceps fungus. In reality, the fungus infects the brains of insects and changes their behavior, ultimately causing them to find a suitable place to root themselves so that the fungus can erupt from their exoskeleton and spread their spores to other insects. This is the fungus that caused the zombie outbreak in The Last of Us. Can somebody maybe do some a little less horrifying with this concept?
>>
>>30203604
Anything that infects a host and changes their behavior beyond their control sounds horrifying to me.

>cordyceps
There's not a huge amount on this currently but it's been discussed before: http://moth-ponies.wikia.com/wiki/The_Forest_of_the_Rot and there was one long-running story about it https://pastebin.com/A0pW3869 which apparently finished(?) though it looks like it's not made it into the pastebin if that's the case.

As done in the above story, it's been a loose thread convention to avoid mixing this idea up with the main (Dust Valley) moths' lives since a lot of people come here for cuteness or feels but not for horror.

You are hereby given one anonymous unit of encouragement.

Maybe a Moff gets infected, and just starts acting strange in ways that only make sense if they're trying to spread spores?

"Hex, did you catch brain fungus out in the Everfree or something?"
>"What? No! Why would you even say something like that?"
"You've been standing on top of buildings a lot lately."

>"I won't apologize for being friendly."

>His hoof traces lightly across your brow, making it that much harder to do much other than keep right on melting there, much less make a cogent counterpoint.

>He coos soothingly.
>"You should learn to be okay with yourself, Anon."
"Who says I'm no-"
>"Shhh. You're not."
>Another sniffle. Oh god.
>You always think the world somehow won't turn without you there, but then it does. It's a prospect more crushing than you can admit.
>And then there's the guilt – heartwrenching foresakenness that the beings around you actually exist outside of some demented little corner in your head.
>They think and feel and act without your pen to the script, and – if whatever force that brought you here were to drag you back to where you came from – you'd die of desperate lovesickness in an instant.
>Or at least, that's what you'd wish to happen.
>A part of you knows it won't; the feelings will fade to that same bleached basalt shade of your other life and you will be forced to call it a dream, for what gentler phrase do we have for things that lie out of reach, real or imaginary?
>What eats at you is not mere social anxiety. If only it were that simple...
"What if I have to go back?" you manage.
>"Huh?"
>>
>>30203807
"What if I leave again? The same way I came here?"
>The icecube has melted now so the hoof traces through the water it left behind, spreading it evenly and bringing warmth to the surface, causing the liquid to be dispelled by the heat.
>You struggle for a way to frame this.
>It's hard to explain the terror of a place that's never been seen by these ponies, simply by forming the words.
>It would be one thing to describe a world beset by evil, but that wouldn't describe Earth.
>It'd be another thing to tell of nations afflicted by some ongoing catastrophe. Perhaps that's a bit closer. But what catastrophes are to some, windfalls are to others, and to still more, they are nothing but further items in the headlines that they might or might not decide to skim on a particular day.
>Here in the valley, in a place so full of love, and hope... could it possibly make sense that there's a far-flung somewhere that never had any, where the closest thing to actual hope is desperation?
>Well, even that's not accurate, of course. There had been hope to speak of at home, just not the kind you'd have here. All of it lay in shadow of the knowledge that the ripples only went so far, the effects of most good deeds stopping promptly at the threshold of sundown, forgotten the next day, where no friendships were destined to happen, and the wrong word at the wrong time could create lifelong enemies instead of colleagues.
>Everything was churn and happenstance and caprice. There was no knowing and no shield against these things, no form of protection expansive enough for everyone, not even for just those who'd deserve such shelter.
>Not that they completely lacked it here, but the speciousness of everyday life had a way of twisting the noblest deeds into wicked horrors, which would all too often go indefinitely unnoticed by those purveying them. Mistakes rarely ever lead to happy endings and lessons learned.

On the lore side, this could definitely still use more development. Do the moths have a way of cleansing/clearing some areas of rot-growth away. Maybe slash-and-burn in some cases? Or does the ecosystem just sort of adapt cause them to become milder as time passes and moths learn to keep away from some spots?

Is there something (else) moths can do to help Saturniidae suppress or even defeat IT? Is there a risk of the corruption's original source returning?

>"I don't know." He paused for a moment. "I guess I might pretend you're just out with the caravan again."
"Only I wouldn't be coming back."
>As you finish saying this, a new thought promptly gouges its way into your heart;
>This isn't your burden alone.
>Equus may have become a bigger part of you than you could bear losing, but it only occurs to you now that the same might also be true the other way around.
>Not for all ponies, but... for some.
>You sigh, noticing simultaneously that Moon Dust has withdrawn his forehooves from both your head and your hand, now resting across the other over his belly. You're not sure at what point you let go of the other.
"Sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I'm just- the longer I'm here, the harder it gets to really think about Earth again. I feel like that's all that's all I talk about, if I'm setting the subject."
>"About Earth? Honestly Anon I don't think you've ever really said much."
>You weren't sure talking would really help. Might make things worse, actually. You rub at the back of your head, looking up toward the moon.
You backtrack. "It's a lot to explain. Sometimes I think better of starting."
>"Well, /I've/ got some time," he says cheerfully.
>He wants to listen, sounds like.
>You blow out some air. Looks like this is happening, then.
>You decide to start off with something he'd understand.
"We're a bit like changelings, Moon Dust."
>"Really?"
"There isn't much magic to us, but... you know? As we learned recently, the changelings weren't even meant to be the way Equestria found them to begin with. However, presumably nobody – aside from perhaps Chrysalis herself – remembered or knew how to fix the problem."
You clarify, gesturing, "That uhh, HUNGER they had."
>>
>>30204362
>You notice that at some point between now and a few minutes ago, a cicada stuck up playing a single, unbroken tone in a nearby tree, and though they had seemed fully inaudible before, a few glugs and clicks from the streams below the boardwalk drift up to your ears.
>It grounds you, somehow, and a touch of the dread lifts.
"We're about where they WERE. Aaand it's been like that for as long as anyone can remember. There's not much paradise anywhere, of course, 'cuz misery over on one side of the world has a way of eventually announcing itself on the other."
>"Here's not much different! Before the caravans came all the way north, there was a lot of fighting between moths. It wasn't that long ago. Tarkin turned a couple of tents into what you see now."
>You smile at this. From what little you've seen of him, Tarkin, the 'Grand Moth', is a bit like the mayor of this village, though he tends to run things from behind the seens, more or less, and appears to be grooming Dawn Gleam as his successor for when the time comes, however many years down the road that might be.
"I mean, okay. Let's assume that everything works out for us apes, back home."
>"I don't see why you wouldn't." You laugh. That smarted. He bruised you like this somehow, without an ounce of malice in his heart. You resolve to start writing down these not-infrequent moments when little phrases like that evoke such twinges of emotion. Maybe – if lucky – you might be able to take the list back with you, when you go.
"But it's hard to wanna just head into the medieval days again. And knowing that I might HAVE to, it kindof... takes me outside of myself. It's part of the reason that I wasn't so happy for deciding to go off on some tour of Equestria, with you here. But my original reason for going... Thinking that there might be some clock ticking this whole time, how attached should I really get?"
>The moth sitting next to you stays silent, perhaps thinking your statement is rhetorical.
>>
>>30204506
>The moth sitting next to you stays silent, perhaps thinking your statement is rhetorical.
>You fidget.
>Finally: "What's over there, Anon?"
>You look up. The moth motions to a single, large tree growing up from a central, rounded area in the middle of the boardwalk. It's surrounded by a set of benches, about which many of the place's shops are arranged. You'd call it a 'town square,' but the moths always inform you that the settlement is not big enough to be called a town, and that the plaza about the tree is indeed not square.
"The lone maple?"
>Whatever you'd call it, when the weather is good, it's a popular place gather, sit, talk, and eat fruit slushies or other treats, which are often maple-flavored. It's considered a specialty.
>"Tarkin decided to stay here because of the sap from it."
>Since most moths have an impeccable sweet tooth, bothering to thicken the stuff into syrup is probably not even necesssary. Virgo and some of the others leave with a big barrel of it every fall and always came back with it empty, presumably making a fortune in return.
"It's still producing, right?"
>"Right."
>You aren't entirely sure where this is going.
>"We've tried planting the samaras, but it doesn't seem to ever take." He might be referring to the little helicopter-blade seeds it creates every season. The foals have a blast playing with them.
"Oh, uhh. Those flying things it makes?"
>"Yeah. Anyhow, we don't know why this tree can grow here, or why it won't clone from the roots."
>On being discussed, in the distance, the tree seems to decide to sway a little in the breeze, its leaves reflecting silvery light from above. You never appreciated this sort of peace back home. Perhaps this is a another thing you might take with you.
>"Do you think we should quit tapping it?"
>>
>>30204584
"Shit, is it sick?"
>"No."
"Is it... not yielding well anymore?"
>"Still as much as ever..."
"So, why stop, then? If it's still standing up to the tap okay, I don't see... what's the problem?"
>Somewhat sharply: "There's no problem, Anon."
"Uh. So...?"
>"Well, we might not have the tree /forever/."
"But that's a-"
>"Pretty dumb reason? For not getting too attached to something?"
>Of all the moths in the village, this particular one seems to possess a practical talent for making you feel like the largest fool in existence.
>If anything, he's gotten better at it since the time you spent away.
>Though you're sure he'll push it right over, your argument has one last pillar still intact:
"Shouldn't I be trying to figure out how I got here? Maybe so I can learn how to stay? Or at least know when I'll have to go back?"
>"Haven't you tried? It sounds like you'd be burning silk, Anon."
>This was a mothpony expression, which you'd heard explained while with the caravan. In the story behind it, an old hermit tries to discover an alternative way to make silk. After trying an array of methods, he concludes that he should study the smoke it produces. He burns through everything without discovering anything new, rather than stopping before he's lost too much of value.
>Come to think of it, you DO remember having the singular experience of being attached to various electrodes and other monitoring equipment with a feverish, purple mare speeding about between the different machines, looking at the readouts, muttering, and scribbling notes to herself. In the end, she did not come up with anything conclusive. Nor had the two Equestrian princesses even after long hours of scrying into whatever magical or energetic residues might have been left since your transport to Equus.
>>
>>30204865
"Euchh."
>You fall back into the fallow dirt behind you.
>He's right; even if you manage to keep yourself perfectly miserable for the remainder of your time here, it will hardly do a thing for the challenges awaiting you back home;
>Emotions aren't exactly the rubber object which will snap back to some preferred shape if stretched or compressed for too long; you aren't even saving yourself that much grief by minimizing the adjustment of going home, simply by trying to simulate your previous life, here.
>Taking a proactive stance to look for answers, you could spend all of your remaining time grasping at straws long gone in the wind, which wouldn't matter a lick if your arrival here in one piece is simply a freak occurrence, astronomically unlikely to ever happen again, least of all in perfect reverse of the first time.
>Looking over to you and noticing your new, energyless position on the ground, Moon Dust pronounces, "There you go! You're so relaxed now!"
>The creamy-brown moth-stallion climbs off of his spot and walks around to you, slipping the shades over your eyes as you lay there.
>"Now you look the part, too."
>You can't see a thing now, of course. It's completely stupid.
>You can't help but crack a grin.
>"Anon, would you like a drink?"
"Uhh."
>"I can make it extra weak for you."
>You facepalm. This bantam stallion. It's not often, but for as demure as he acts, you're certain this guy tries to one-up you when you're at your weakest, but something about him makes it very difficult to put up a fight when it happens.

Optional kicker:
"I-"
>"It's okay, Anon. I won't tell anypony about how beta you've gotten since you went on your little roadtrip."
"God damnit, Moondust."

Thank you both! Lately I've tried to focus less on sticking to an expected style and I don't know if that's changed it, or if it's just the camera angle. Here's a sketch from a different angle.

It's good hearing from you again, Breakfast, and yeah-- I don't know what it is about these threads, but I check every few weeks and got super excited seeing it actually pop up again

For everyone – what is it over the wall that Hexferry's looking at, do you figure? I'd guess something unusual.

>I originally wrote her as a little shorter yeah but my double dubs are better than your regular dubs which means I win this incredibly important argument so there
I'm pretty sure I picked up around the point you were establishing her character for real, and I remember that pretty much everyone was afraid of her. Although this was mostly due to personality, I tend to envision bigness or tallness as a thing for intimidating characters. It's pretty minor since moths can always just fly to reach high shelves or whatever.

>>30206703
>The thumbnail for >>30206594 looks like Sepia has a flower-garland
Great draw. I guess I never made note of it before, but I always got the same impression from >>30206594. I'd say flower(s) in mane make a lot of sense for Sepia, given her general disposition so it makes it that much easier to believe when zoomed out.

>>30206950
>burn it to the ground
I suppose this makes sense since fire burns up evil spores just as well as anything else (if not better), but there's the question of whether the unkind forces responsible for causing the spots of corruption throughout the forest have any sense of survival or idea that they might be systematically targeted... If that's the case, I would expect you'd have a lot of casualties on your way to conduct your second or third controlled burn. Given that some of the affected creatures are quite mobile, your party might end up starting to meet resistance long before they even reached the outer perimeter. Surely the moths would try other things before resorting to something with such a high chance of collateral losses.
>>
Screw it, I have a little inspiration for once. Moth time.

>You are Hexferry, and some weird wall appeared out of seemingly nowhere.
>It's really tall, so you'd have to fly up to see over it, but there's a ledge near the top so you can stand and see over it.
>Well, you haven't actually checked over it yet.
>So far, the stallions have been up there a lot, and that can't mean anything good.
>Virgo even fell from being up there too long.
>Weirdly, his only injury was a nosebleed, completely unrelated to his fall.
>You can't say you aren't curious, but...
>At the same time, you don't want to.
>You'd only look over if, like, there wasn't anyone around, or something like that.
>And you haven't been staking out this spot to wait for your perfect chance.
>That's just a coincidence.
>Coincidentally, you've been here for a couple hours.
>Exactly that.
>A coincidence.
>...
>Okay, it's really bothering you, and you've let your curiosity get the better of you.
>You can't let others know that, though.
>Caramel knows you have a bad time with curiosity, and she abuses it enough already.
>Ah, wait, here's your chance!
>Waspy is slowly floating down from the top, and he was the last one up there!
>You dart between a few houses, checking to make sure no one sees you along the way.
>Precision is key.
>No one has really been walking past, so you shouldn't really have to worry.
>But it's better to be safe than sorry.
>... Actually, maybe you're being a little petty about this.
>After all, something like this appearing from out of nowhere should be the talk of the village, right?
>It's only natural to want to check it out.
>>
>>30209809

>Brushing caution to the wind, you spread your wings and fly up to the ledge.
>You land daintily and check each side to make sure no one-
>Oh.
>You probably should've checked other parts of the wall.
>No wonder no one's been passing by where you were staking out at.
>Everyone's up here.
>It'd be easier to count the moths who aren't up here.
>You see Meisa, Lamp, Goldie, Robin, Minty, Ember...
>Tonic, Gemini, Moon Dust...
>After a little thought, this should have been obvious.
>Giant wall out of nowhere again, after all.
>You don't see a couple of the shyer moths though, like Plum and Shimmer.
>It makes sense. Either they can control their curiosity, or their unwantingness to be around others overpowers it.
>You nod to yourself.
>Well, time to actually check over this wa-
>Oh.
>What?
>The sight you see shocks you to your very core.
>It's a perfect reflection of your own village.
>Well, except for... its residents.
>You recognize most of them, but you also notice they're... different.
>There's a Virgo down there, and he... looks a bit smaller and more mare-ish.
>Actually, he might just be a mare.
>Meisa's wearing a sundress, flying slightly above the ground, talking with Caramel.
>Oh, and Caramel...
>She's wearing glasses and has saddlebags bursting with books at her sides.
>Is... Is that a turtleneck?
>Her hair is tied back in a bun.
>What is this hellscape you've feast your eyes upon.
>You look back up at Meisa, the one on the wall some distance away from you, just to make sure she's still up here and this isn't some elaborate hoax.
>No, she's still there.
>Okay.
>You look back down to check out other parts of the village.

>Moon Dust seems like the average male. Not like the average stallion here, but more along a regular average.
>He's sitting at a café table across from Birch; they're both drinking shakes or something.
>And Birch's hair's pretty frizzy.
>Welcome back to the age of jive.
>Wait, hold up, you think you see... Squeak, trying to round up the kids.
>Her hair is pretty neat, and she's wearing a dress.
>... You have to look away again.
>It's just too weird!
>They're not all... completely different, but they definitely aren't the same!
>You don't even want to see what you're like!
>...
>Actually, you hadn't even thought about that.
>If they're all down there, that means you must be too, right?
>... This is going to get surreal.
>You look back up and survey the area, checking specifically for another Hexferry.
>Do you actually hope to find her?
>You aren't sure.
>It's not like she'll be an exact opposite, so you shouldn't have to judge yourself off her or anything.
>... Right?
>Gosh, you could find everyone else so easily, why can't you find yourself?
>Ah, wait, there- No, no that's...
>Oh, no, that's Waspy.
>You're going to try your best to not remember that.
>... She's really flexible...
>Er, he.
>She?
>Definitely female in that village.
>Maybe that's why Waspy was on this wall so long.
>You're the only other moth here with a bee-like color scheme, you shouldn't have this much trouble finding-
>Your eyes stop and you pause.
>Not on yourself, but on someone else you recognize.
>It's Shimmer.
>She's... taller.
>And there are a lot of mares around the village staring at her.
>Is her hair blowing in the wind?
>Why is it so perfect?
>That's not even fair.
>>
>>30209820

>Virgo seems to be hiding a bouquet of flowers, ready to give them to Shimmer.
>... Why is female Virgo so shy?
>You can see how flustered she is from all the way up here.
"... I'm done here."
>"What, Shimmer too hot for you?"
>You fall to your side, barely still on the ledge, and look up at who just said that.
>It's Caramel.
>How long was she up here?
"C-Caramel! H-How long here you there?"
>Gosh dang it.
>She doesn't avert her eyes from the backwards village below.
>"That depends, how long were you entranced by our little cyan beauty down there?"
>Why is she always like this.
>You try to put on your best game face.
>Top Scrunch.
"What is this wall, and what is this backwards place?"
>"I don't know. Good to know public displays of affection are more openly accepted there, though~"
"What."
>"Yeah, there are mares kissing all over the place. What, didn't you notice?"
>No, you didn't.
>Well, you noticed what Waspy did...
>Why do you still remember that! You were trying to forget that!
>You shake your head.
>Caramel chuckles.
>"Well, I might have to stop calling you Hexxy-sexy, because the you down there is really challenging you for it~"
>... You what?
>You're instantly up and looking over.
>... There's no sign of you anywhere.

Kindof throws us into it a little fast, I felt like, and I missed the odd embellishment that you might've included e.g.

>It's not clear what the pen Anon builds for the critter he finds really looks like or anything, so it comes as a surprise that it's able to escape/outgrow it.
The scene at the end of this part with Ponks is great and we even get a good situational punchline out of it. Your pacing improves from here on out.

Oh my, thanks for the feedback!

This is kind of an old story - I was writing another story in the Strange Waifu Thread about a year ago, and some guy kept bugging us for mothpony content, so I basically wrote this to shut him up.

The basic premise is that mothponies weren't really well known in Equestria yet - that context is given in some throw-away lines here and there later in the narrative. I kinda prefer to start telling a story from the middle. And yes, I did do a bit of research before I wrote it. In fact, the character "Izzy" is based on the Isabella Tiger Moth, which begins life as the Banded Wooly Bear. So I had a bit of fun with that.

Anyhow, I'm pleased that you enjoyed it. Thanks!

Don't think the exact size has been ever precised. Most stories go with similar to that of regular ponies, given how they interact with species other than their own, including humans.

However, there have been a few stories concerning proto-mothponies, as per the ideas regarding their appearance first came to be. They had more insect-like features, pic related. This got mostly scrapped in favour of the more pony-like appearance, though it's had it's enthusiasts.

No, actually.

Mora's extra appendages are based off of coremata, also called "hair pencils" or "androconial organs". Certain moths have these to help them spread pheromones for alerting other moths to their presence. In some species it's only the males that have them, in others it's the females.

One would think so, right?

However, imagine how difficult it would be for a regular pony to comprehend moths are mutants. What trials would one need to undergo to trust a creature looking so oddly fitting within the radioactive landscape, yet supposedly, having pure origins.
That has some potential, I'd say that much.

Alright, that felt really emotional. In-depth. I got into it. Had the spirit of uneasiness in the the clutch. Glad I came to realize the ending is one of the possible ones. It really threw me off, feeling outta the place. Seeing where you were coming from with it, but... if that were meant to be true, making a joke like that on a so long-sought reunion makes Moondust feel... ice-cold.

Pun not intended in the moment of writing. Felt obliged to leave it nonetheless.

Could really chew into stuff like that. That kind of writing style, that is. Wondering what the other ending might be, as I make my way slowly down the thread.

I got a bit sidetracked by a phonecall earlier this evening but I've been itching to write some new green for the thread. I can probably manage a post or two here, then I'll pick up again tomorrow.

>Hexferry diligently trots back toward the grand lodge, having just a fetched breakfast for herself and Dawn Gleam.
>It consists of spiced, applesauce-and-cherry slushies in a pair of tall cups made from stalks of bamboo, which she'll of course have to return to Cinnamon later, once they're empty; apparently they are imported and extremely "humblefancy," as Minty described them, so Cinnamon quite justifiably wants them promptly returned.
>It's going to be a long day, but she's mentally prepared herself for it, having tried to shift her sleep-schedule over to the sunny hours to match that of Dawn Gleam as they make preparations to receive the wagons which will be arriving from the south early next month.
>She will be running errands about the village today until the sun begins to go down. There's no shortage of items on the todo-list.
>With this in mind, she makes a bee-line for the lodge, but something peculiar going on to the east of the plaza catches her eye first, and she stops by one of its benches, momentarily setting down the drinks on the seat.
>Hexferry peers over the back of the bench, a blank look painting her features as she tries to process the scene unfolding across the way. ( >>30205554 )
>Anon, lampmoth, Butterscotch, and Waspy are all milling about, most of them carrying long, sturdy planks of wood out from the house and stacking them in a open spot toward the south end of the boardwalk.
>Although Anon and Waspy are naturally diurnal, it's unusual for Butterscotch and lampmoth to be up much during the daytime. Something is *definitely* happening.
>>
>>30224163
>Next, the group carries out a set of sawponies (sawhorses) and several heavy-looking buckets, each wreathed in a rugged, multitudinous skirt of pockets, from which various saws, awls, hammers, files, and other tools protrude.
>Hexferry's brow unconsciously furrows as she gazes for a few further moments and wonders what all of this is about.
>Shaking her head, she decides she will simply have to ask of it later, if it doesn't become clear what's happening after events have had time proceed a bit more.
>Judging by the amount of equipment they're lugging out, they're probably going to be there for a while, so things might simply make /themselves/ clear, as the day wears on.
>Hexferry grabs the cups again in each hoof and flitters back toward the lodge.
>Once inside, Dawn greets her, removing the transparent green accountant's visor from her head and coming out from behind the counter to join her at the thick, squareish wooden table in the waiting room.
>If there were more than just the two moths there, it would feel extremely cramped. However, it's uncommon that there's much official business to be had by villagers at the lodge, so this maximum-comfortable-occupancy is rarely ever exceeded.
>The two mares chat, and enjoy the excellent craftsmothship that Cinnamon always puts into her treats.
>>
>>30224187
>As they reach the bottoms of their wooden mugs, Dawn Gleam fairly promptly nods, then gets up to return to her desk and abacus.
>Hexferry again pauses to stare at something, looking over Dawn's shoulder as she prepares to sit at the little desk which is partly tucked away behind the service-window over the counter.
>...It isn't an abacus /precisely/, since it actually features a small needle which scrawls things onto a fine scroll ledger. It had taken the expertise of lampmoth, Butterscotch, and Dawn Gleam combined to put it together properly, as it had been disassembled so that it wouldn't be damaged during shipping. Though a truly curious device to most of the moths, Dawn was supremely pleased that they had gotten it working. She would likely be putting it to heavy use today.
>Resuming her accountant's visor – which supposedly helps to make math somehow easier – Dawn mentions the first thing that Hexferry can do. As always, she is extremely courteous without being extravagant with time — businesslike, in a fashion.
>Hexferry is almost confused about how it's possible for Dawn to be such a pleasure to be around while simultaneously staying focused and keeping others focused as well.
>Now having a task, though, she blinks these thoughts away, and heads off on her first bit of duty, returning the cups to the treat-shop and passing the group of four again on the way to see Amata and Tonic at the hospital on the southeast end of the village.
>The working gang had hauled out still more objects, including a number of sandbags, a large coil of rope, several finer bundles of twine, a grinding wheel, some bits of firewood, a reaping scythe, and a CAULDRON, of all things.
>Hexferry can feel herself growing angry that a project of this magnitude might be underway for ANY reason, muchless one she's not been informed of.

>She huffs, shutting her eyes, and tossing her nose up into the air, continuing to walk.
>Doing so, she fails to see a very-confused-looking Butterscotch working about fifty paces away, squinting and trying to determine just what's gotten her goat. She fails to intuit that it's her and the crew's activities themselves which are doing Hexferry all the mischief.
>The dark-colored mare continues to the lofty hospital building to update the list of things needed to keep the clinic and pharmacy there properly stocked. She encounters no surprises and starts her return to Dawn with the notes for the next job she'll assign her.
>As she makes her way back, the four – naturally – are still laboring sweatily out on the boardwalk, and still – naturally – thoughtlessly ruining Hexferry's day in the process.
>They had cut several beams of wood and now lay them out along some lines of chalk which had been drawn by lampmoth, who stands presently holding an L-square, and pointing with a forehoof.
>The Death's Head moth now fully intends to confront Dawn about this when she comes through the door. Surely, she is being kept in the dark on purpose.
>As she reaches for the handle, she hears the sounds of banging hammers echoing across the boardwalk. Her ears flatten.
>She briskly opens the door only to find a note from Dawn stating that she'd stepped out to visit with Shimmer Light in order to determine what sort of items she would have ready to trade when the upcoming group of merchant moths arrives.
>Hexferry deflates; not only will she apparently remain uninformed about the work-gang's undertakings for a while longer, but she also doesn't get to visit her favorite mare in the whole village.
>Then again – she's struck – if there's any haggling over prices or items which are or are not up for trade in a few weeks, it's probably better that she not be involved. On a sufficiently bad day, Shimmer could easily make such an endeavor a vastly unpleasant experience...

>Dawn's note – penned in impeccably-neat hoofwriting – goes on to ask her to visit with Sequin, who should be expecting her; she's supposed to have some materials and garments ready and also needs to transmit a list of tools and supplies that she and Meisa have run low on.
>Hexferry sighs. She knew that today might be trying, but hadn't expected the annoying black swan of the sizeable construction-project going on in the middle of everything.
>She can at least look forward to talking with Shimmer about the conversation she's probably now having with Dawn. She knows it already, but she's always happy to have it reaffirmed that there's something of a special relationship between herself and Shimmer, which is most evident when compared to Shimmer's one-on-one interactions with other moths.
>Leaving the list from the hospital behind for Dawn, Hexferry motors her wings until she reaches Sequin's shop, which is along the south line of buildings near the plaza.
>In the distance, Butterscotch and lampmoth each use a hoof-drill to bore a hole into the longer two sides of the rectangular frame they've constructed. Anon takes measurements while Waspy lays out more wood.
/Well, it's not a boat, then. That narrows it down a little./
>A slightly stuffy wave of air hits her as she pulls the door open.
>She's met with a pained, slightly-askance look from Sequin as she enters.
>In a moment, this recedes somewhat as she spits out the needle she's just threaded, and anchors it into a nearby pincushion, swiveling on her stool to face her.
"Uhh, hi, Sequin. Is there something I can help you with?"
>"Have you ever made a pink mimosa before?" comes the flat, gravelly reply.
>Whoa. She sounds like she's suddenly taken up smoking. And not the kind of *controlled* smoking Tarkin does with that long pipe of his, no — the kind where it's nighttime and you stare into the fire and wind up breathing smoke until someone notices you're too close and pulls you away. THAT kind.

>Hexferry hesitates and recalls.
"Well, regular mimosas, anyways."
>"It's the same, but the champagne is dark rosé, instead of white. If there's no oranges, then mangos or goldenberries will do instead... bananas if you absolutely HAVE to."
"Uhh, okay."
>It's a strange request, but Sequin looks a bit put-upon, and Hexferry finds no real reason to argue. She moves off.
>As door closes: "And remember it's stirred, not shaken!" (I looked around, and mimosa recipes actually specify this.)
>At this hour, the Dustbin is probably about closed, but since Minty's café is often thought of as the place to go for a romantic dinner, they might have what's needed. They're closed now too, but Hexferry has a key;
>Luckily, she was the last one to shopsit for Minty and Birch.
>If it had been Amata instead, it would've meant another trip over to the hospital for the spare.
>Arriving around the back at the staff-entrance, Hexxy half-expects Minty to be awake and around for some reason, but finds this isn't the case.
>She locates an orange, a mango, and a sealed bottle of sparkling blush, which looks to be reasonably dark.
>She places these onto the counter.
>Then, the mare makes her way down the stairs into the village's large, subterranean yakhchāl, which is accessible from a number of village buildings that have stairways reaching down – almost unnecessarily many, in fact, but for each one, any excess heat that makes its way into the cavernous space has another way to escape, ensuring that the ice there stays solid for as long as possible throughout the summer months. In fact, it's uncommon to have to replenish it more often than every two or three years come winter.
>Hexferry heads back up with a small amount of ice to chill the drink, crushing the fruit into juice before shaving the ice in to cool it.
>>
>>30229186
>It turns out that there's more juice than she expected.
>It's probably enough to make another glass, which she could either drink herself or give to someone else.
>Since it isn't mixed with the champagne yet, she still has the opportunity to make the 2nd one virgin if it makes sense to.
>The moths she knows to be currently awake are:
>1. Herself, of course. Being only an infrequent partaker of the devil's drink, she would probably have it without any champagne, since she can never seem to gauge how much alcohol will give her a buzz versus how much will push her well past that.
>2. The gang-of-four working outside. Going out with only one drink *might* cause an argument, but this would give Hexferry a chance to ask what they're building, and also a chance to give out to them if it's something irresponsible.
>3. Amata and Tonic, who are both working at the hospital. It would probably go to Amata, since Tonic often acts like such a hermit; he might not appreciate something like that even if he took it.
>4. Sequin, though she's getting a drink already. Maybe she wouldn't mind getting two?
>5. Dawn Gleam, though it hasn't been long since breakfast. She might appreciate it even if she sets it aside for a while back at the lodge. If that happens, it will be warm by the time she drinks it.
>6. Shimmer Light who often seems utterly astounded (or irritated) whenever somepony does something nice for her. She might appreciate it most of all coming from Hexxy, but the hawkmoth is of course aware of her own bias when it comes to Shimmer.
>...Hexferry also worries that if the latter two are still meeting, she might be chastized for going to see Shimmer when supposedly working with Sequin;
>Dawn may have chosen to go herself so that the visit didn't just turn into social hour, as it might have under Hexxy.
>>
>>30229302
TL;DR: two related choices to make:
>A. Since there's enough stuff to make another mimosa aside from the one already prepared for Sequin, Hexferry can choose to drink it herself or give it to somepony else. Since it's daytime, most others are likely asleep, though she could certainly go check for somepony specifically.
Indicate a choice 1-6 from the previous post or 7 plus whoever your alternate moth is.
>B. The champagne hasn't been mixed in yet, so depending on who gets the drink, it might make sense to make it nonalcoholic.
Indicate "booze" or "no booze" in addition to your choice for A.

>grimdark and diabetes in the same thread
I think it's good, honestly. While grimdark shit can of course get out of hand sometimes, so can "LOL SO RANDOM CUTENESS OH-EMM-JEE" because it can readily lead to just a few anons pseudo-roleplaying a thread to death, and I think it can also result in shitty, dehumanizing expectations being placed on drawfags. We can probably all think of generals that have swung sharply between certain extremes, with little time spent at the balance-point between "dawww", "lel", "muhh dick...", and "jesus-christ-how-horrifying".

I might make the argument that the arrangement of having "options" is not too different from the show... sure, you have slapstick-y episodes where somebody gets the Stupid Ball for a day, or episodes that are pretty much wall-to-wall cute, but you also encounter real danger in things like the timberwolves. You also have opportunities for some seriously-disturbing fridge-logic e.g.:
>the fizzled pain-magic spell attempted in Magic Duel
>the implications of Too Many Pinkie Pies
>the literal lifetime of suffering endured by Cranky
>the existence and purpose of Tartarus
>etc.

There aren't any paths that secretly lead to ruin or anything. I only had a loose idea of how each path would work, so of course it's about to get a little more solid as I outline it now, but here goes...

>Juice to Hexferry
+Disposition-points gained with Dawn Gleam, Sequin, and working moths since Hexferry stays focused and has more patience and energy to deal with everyone. Would affect how I'd write certain interactions in future somewhat. Probably more Sequin, and also Dawn and (gay boring) economic-type worldbuilding as a result, since I think that's the most-logical way I can develop her.
>Booze+juice to Hexferry
Alcohol kicks in after helping Sequin. Squeak makes a comment as Hex passes by so she goes over to the moths building stuff and starts a silly argument. (Hilarity ensues?) Dawn Gleam doesn't flip shit but closer relationship with her also not formed.
>Juice to Sequin
Sequin refuses juice-only, so nothing special happens. Since Sequin is acting a little weird, Hexferry doesn't drink the thing immediately so the bonus from drinking it right away (top option) is forgone. Stronger bond with Dawn Gleam still happens.
>Booze+juice to Sequin
More Sequin in next story.
>Juice to building moths
Waspy, Butterscotch, and Anon explain what's happening while Sequin takes a break before receiving help from Hex. We learn earlier what's being built.
>Booze+juice to building moths
Not enough to get any of them drunk, but they notice it's alcoholic and ask about this. Exploration about Sequin's role in village and the other moths' views of her.
>Juice or booze+juice to Amata
More Amata in next story.
>Booze+juice to Dawn
Help Sequin. Dawn declines the offer and Hexferry drinks the stuff after work. Ember cameo.
>Juice to Dawn
More Dawn in next story.
>Juice to Shimmer
Help Sequin first, since Shimmer doesn't like cold stuff, then learn about Shimmer's discussion with Dawn.
>Booze+juice to Shimmer
...

(1 / 2)
>>
>>30237436
>Booze+juice to Shimmer
Hexferry always encourages Shimmer to try new things – in this case: alcohol. Shimmer reluctantly agrees and Hexferry heads back off. It might be something I'd just leave as a loose end to be referenced later probably by (You).

Question first. Why has the ending "A" been posted after ending "B"?

Is it meant to be a suggestion of "What would have -initially-been if not for what happened?

You sure have gone long-winded on this one. Overall, it feels as though you've mixed impressions from one of those "Princesses learn of human war" threads with that of the regular show discussion or EQG threads (the whole motif of possibilities etc)

It feels lacking. Sure, metaphysicality is all there, but it's lacking the backbone of reality to glue things together and make it feel as though those words are more than just fleeting thoughts, to be forgotten at the first distraction.

Also, if one's to nitpick, read this again and realize what's wrong:

> making it that much harder to do much other than keep right on melting there, much less make a cogent counterpoint.

That, as well as the proportion of the first part of ending A, tied closely to what's happened before it, to all the thoughts being thrown out there in one stream, makes one wonder if you haven't written it in one go and haven't gone through it yourself until after you posted it. Have you?

It feels incomplete, honestly. Seeing the gesture in the last sentences, but the lack of interaction with reality makes one go back to what has been already pointed out by the anon earlier - things continue outside of one's range of influence and happen, regardless of one's inactivity. Wouldn't that be a lesson for one, at least? Having come to that conclusion earlier already, should one really trace off and not focus on what is right now?

As said before, it feels off.

Like a paragraph mid-chapter of an another, longer story and not an ending to one as short as this one.

Wrote it first but called it "B" as in "a vinyl record's B-side". It channeled some irritation at the time of writing.

>mixed impressions from various threads
Similarities are coincidental. I lurk /mlp/ for drama and show-discussion, but don't really visit other greentext-y threads... MPG is my real home.

>words feel more like fleeting thoughts
Condensing a long-running, largely-unseen struggle is rough, especially for a blank-slate, pin-the-personality-on-the-character like Anon, especially when the setup is "suddenly it's 8+ months later and shit's changed." You're right that it's "tell"-y; not enough actually happens in the moments immediately described by the text.

>Runs together between branches, maybe didn't go through it enough
I went through it a fair amount. If it's the bit of duplication between branches you're referring to, I'll avoid that in future. The bigger disconnect was probably that the leadin + Ending B were written in November. Ending A was written this past week.

>It feels off
Confirms my suspicions. Not excusing myself from not doing better, but it's likely a confluence that lead to the green that was output:
>Should've written true "A" ending right away without diverting
Then, given the fact I fucked that up:
>Was afraid to craft backstory for everything that happened to Anon since he left with the caravan, or even as far back as what happened in his life before departing Earth just to express "Jesus do ever I miss Moon Dust and the moth thread, fml"
>Was afraid to commit to a fundamental change in the relationship between Moon Dust and Anon for the sake of a vignette, since it's hard to dismiss a characterization even if it's "just a one-off." Could go that way, but I'd want MDA's auspices before going as far as "Moon Dust moves on and Anon has to deal."
>Wanted to try and escape "just another Anon-&-Moony-cuddle-instead-of-talking green" so added a bunch of dumb words.

Thanks sick anon
Hope you feel better.

>Meanwhile, the wooden contraption being built – currently facing longways from west to east – has gained a pulley on its west side, a pair of vertical beams rising from the middle of the two longer-ends of the frame (struts), and a set of diagonal supports climbing to the top of each beam from the eastern end of the frame.
>A shorter, stout post has also been affixed westerly to the frame's southern strut. A largeish hole was bored from north to south towards the top of said post.
>A big dowel about the length of two mothponies nose-to-tail also rests nearby. It looks about the right size to slide through the hole.
>While lampmoth is using the twine to tie a whipknot at the end of a length of rope, the others take a moment to chat.

>"Not all moths raise their own foals, muchless name them, Anon. We're moths, not *ponies.*"
>Waspy is probably referring to the three *Equestrian* pony tribes with this statement.
"Well, okay but... that's weird, isn't it?"
>Waspy does not answer directly, instead pointing over at a big, rough hunk of marble that resides in one of the flower-boxes beside the steps that lead up to the plaza.
>After a moment: "What shape is this rock, Anon?"
"Uhh, I don't know. Spherical-kinda? Oblate-roundish? Ellipsoidal, I guess?"
>The hornet moth gestures. "Don't /describe/ the rock, just tell me what shape it is, *exactly*."
"I j- there's not a name for that *exact* shape. It would be a completely useless word."
>"Precisely, Anon. Sometimes it makes no sense to have specific words for things."
"But that's-"

>The earthling's confused look continues to linger, however.
>"*SQUEAK.*"
>Butterscotch steps forward. "Here, Anon. Allow me to demonstrate."
>The speckled white mare walks over to the moth working by the frame and gingerly removes the lampshade, placing it on her own head.
>She strides back. "Okay, Anon. Who's lampmoth now?"
>Anon's face twists up in indecision.
>"*SQUEAK!*"
>Waspy nods.
>After a moment of what looks like some painfully-intense cognitive processing, Anon responds:
"Fshhh. Alright... If BUTTERSCOTCH is 'lampmoth' now, then who's THAT?" Anon points over to the artist formerly known as 'lampmoth.'

The roleplaying game I've been participating in has come to host moth ponies at one point. One of them was meant to take after a Luna moth and I've decided to take a shot, visualising it, using the moth pony creator. Since this thread has already had Actias and Actues, bearing the same roots, I've decided to take a little different approach, focusing on the colours of the antennae and the underside of the moth's body, as referenced in the pic.
>>

The result was pic related.
What do you think of her, /moff/?
>>
>>30242412
I think my favorite part about the design is that you kept the colors true to a real luna moth. Mothpony wings tend to be opaque, and the clear wings are a bit flutterpony-ish, but they still look good. I enjoy the fluffier forelocks and the antennae are cute

"You have to NAME things to talk about them."

>Butterscotch returns the lampshade to its usual wearer.
>Under lampmoth's direction for the next step, Anon holds the final loose plank of wood upright in the frame at a slight angle just behind the high crossbeam.
>Butterscotch and Squeak thread the rope through the outer holes in the frame and around the plank's base and two short dowels each held by Waspy and Lampmoth.
>The loose ends are coiled around the rest of the rope and knotted off.
>Waspy and lampmoth then twist the two dowels in opposite directions, drawing them in close to the frame and tensing the rope.
>The rope's untwisting action presses the central plank forward into the crossbeam.

To be honest, those are some good questions that could easily set an arc of a story. The moths, learning of rot and how to deal with it - from records of the past to recent, alarming developments.

Hell, two of the moth greens I was considering wriitng had to deal with those issues. One of them was even meant to have it as the focus of attention... I hope I actually get to writing those one day.

Pic related was what first inspired me when thinking of this issue.

>what would a moths do
A good starting point would be your ideas about how/whether moth ponies would get involved in war against the Stripes. Would they choose sides? Would they stay out of it?

Then I guess a more general lore-question is whether e.g. griffons ever had to retreat into Stables or similar structures when the megaspells went off in Equestria/Zebrica/Zebrani/whatever. According to some maps, Griffonia/Griffonstone is not even on the same continent as Equestria. Would/did they all still need to go underground to survive? I would ask this in the FoE thread but apparently that's not a thing right now. I'd always considered that general a constant on these boards. I guess I'm an oldfag or something.

The FoE thread is dead. It was replaced by a discord server. Anyways, I already settled the griffin thing in my current setting. In my current campaign I just wrote it off that the yack and griffin homelands are completely fine and untouched by the war. I'm not sure how big moth ponies would be in the war or what they could bring to the table, maybe they would be better scouts because of their small frames and tiny size. Most likely moths would create a small kingdom ruled like Dave's Republic and thrive there in secrecy, hidden away from the rest of the wastes. That's what I think anyways.
>>
>>30256234
>The FoE thread is dead
I guess there's enough people who already enjoy FoE that it's not really like you guys need to have the visibility of a thread constantly being bumped to keep a up stable population (UNINTENTIONAL PUN)

>tiny
Just to be clear, moth-ponies aren't breezie-sized, though they are smaller than say a typical earthpony.
As scouts, they could probably sneak around a touch better due to their size, and you might headcanon that certain moths might be able to avoid danger better because of their antennae and hearing. I guess their rations might also be lighter/cheaper since it would mostly be sugar plus a few vitamins which could be reconstituted with water in the field. Some adult moths might also be able to take advantage of the fact they can eat cloth.. (Not all adults retain this ability after foalhood, but some do.)
Being partly insectoid and living off mostly carbs, I don't think most moths could heal as well as regular ponies.

I think your setup with the Griffons and Yaks makes okay sense, but it leaves open some questions.
>How were/are they affected by the Pegasus Enclave (or whatever they're called) blocking the skies? Does your canon take place before or after some holes get punched in the blanket? Were nations outside of Equestria even affected by that jazz?
>If things are better in Griffonstone/Yakyakistan, how are they dealing with refugees? I don't imagine most ponies would decide to stay in the Equestrian Wastelands if given a choice to leave.
>>
>>30256524
I think the moths would be able to fare better and avoiding food concerns pretty well. I also think they should have a bunch of racial perks that revolve around sneaking, survival, and sensing things, maybe moths should be innately more resistant to radiation but also weaker less resistant to physical damage than an earth pony or other race. I'm wondering what an epic level moth pone would be like.

Here's the expanded race list for the game.

Our setting is taking place thirty years before Lilpip leaves the Stable, so she hasn't even been born yet. The Yacks have been left alone by the enclave since they pose no threat to them and have a barbaric and technologically illiterate culture. The enclave haven't messed with Griffinstone and Griffinstone hasn't messed with the enclave. Griffinstone and the enclave have an unspoken peace treaty.

Okay so kind of a long answer but might be worth something.

https://derpibooru.org/515101 (safe)
My idea of where the moths are is: if you go east of the Badlands and just keep on going south around them through the Hayseed Swamps, the land eventually becomes less boggy and that's where you'll start to find mothponies. I think of Dust Valley itself (which contains the village where the thread moths live) as being north of most of the truly rotten jungle/forest deathscapes that you'll find further south, where settlements are smaller and more insular, the land a bit more hilly/mountainous, and the mothy tribal traditions and languages more intact. There, knowledge of the Rot is more intimate, since you're basically instantly fucked if you don't know your shit.

If a character learned to survive there, they might not find the Equestrian Wastelands all that bad if they had reason to visit them. They might be immune or have antidotes for some of the most wicked possible shit that the rest of the world's never seen before (and know to unleash some of it) and/or be totally collected around super-dangerous beasts after having dealt with them all the time back home. Something like that might make sense if you're introducing a non-PC.

Also, you might consider making a "friends with dragons" passive or something like that for the race. The thread has talked some about how moths and dragons have served to protect oneanother for a long time.

Oh... our party is in Vanhoover, but I could probably write in a few moth ponies. When I homebrew the race I think I'll let them be good at brewing potions and poisons like the zebras and I think it would be good if they had lots of resistance to disease(not sleep deprivation though because that would be silly). I also think I should give them charisma and speech bonuses when speaking to dragons. Do moths have the ability to speak to spirits?

>talk to spirits
Definitely not just in general.

Though there's been nothing in the thread about it as far as I'm aware, I could see a "commune moth with ancestors and/or forest spirits" sorta thing happen maybe depending on the moth's background (like if they've spent time in some tribal moth community that's done this), but if it's a different race of dead pones they're talking to, that might not help much unless spirit-talk is spirit-talk ignorant of race/tribe. Further just "spirits that were never alive as ponies and aren't land/forest-y" would be a stretch, beyond just the potential sensitive-antennae thing, but that's more detection/reception that talking two-way. Maybe if it's just a particularly talkative spirit who just wants to say things... but I'd argue the right unicorn might be just as effective as a receiver for such messages, depending on how magical/natural/unnatural/more-of-a-ghost-than-a-spirit the spirit is, and the moth's background as opposed to the unicorn's.

If you wanted to come up with some stuff about Saturniidae granting a moth some special abilities for the purposes of saving/helping mothpony kind then that would probably be a way for you to do spirit-talk (or probably a lot of other things) if you really wanted; Saturniidae is sorta the guardian mother spirit of the moth forests who holds back the Rot, according to mothpony folklore, so she could probably grant various blessings.

So I guess for special race-stuff, other than antennae-sense, night-sight, and not needing to eat as much as a normal pony (in exchange for damage being harder/slower to recover from), if you have more than one moth in the party, they could probably communicate/find eachother without using sight or sound because dust/pheromones.

I imagine beast-speak like Fluttershy's can go to any race, so that's not moth-special. If you want a goofy perk: backward thinking might make them better at talking to weird races, solving word/thought puzzles, etc.

Tack on that IRL, most moths can hear ultra high frequencies way the heck out of human ranges, and in addition to seeing well at night, some can see into the infrared and UV light-spectra because of their relationship with flowers.

That should give you plenty to work with. Hopefully you can balance out the good by giving them weaknesses against physical damage, inability to fly when it's really wet (just an idea), altitude-limits on flight (sub-cloud level, usually), and slightly lower starting strength (perhaps just due to their smaller size).

>>30257739

I must say, those are some good filenames.
Oh and the draws are even better.

Cool to see you're still kickin'. Your timing for checking back here is actually pretty good, considering the last few threads (last year May/June and this year April) weren't particularly healthy and kept 404ing from lack of activity.

I noticed if you tell NoScript to prevent JS from Moe from running, the site will still show posts and stuff and disabling Adblock/Adblock Plus isn't necessary. Some of there popup ads are extremely sketchy so I'd say that's the best approach (see pic). b4k seems less bad but it doesn't have as many threads saved.

>Hexferry finds some paper and writes down a quick note for Minty and Birch to let them know she opened the bottle.
>That way, they'll know to use it before it goes flat.
>Of course, she also makes clear she's happy to pay them back as well.
>Pondering it for a moment, the hawkmoth decides that it's best if she doesn't make any detours, nor risk getting tipsy when Sequin and the others are counting on her to help with these preparations for next month.
>Lifting the bowl with the remaining juice, she drinks it somewhat sloppily, spilling a few drops on herself and onto the counter.
>She gigglesqueaks at this and wipes her mouth with the back of a forehoof, before running a rag over the counter and rinsing off the utensils she used.
>If she'd been in company, she'd probably be beet-red and telling somepony off for making her do this and moreover drawing attention to it.
>Alone, however, it wasn't a big deal. A source of amusement, even.
>Her eyes sweep over the room to check nothing is left out of place, and she makes for the door with the tall glass for Sequin in hoof.
>Although it's nearing midday, some clouds are rolling in quickly from the west, partially-obscuring the sun and bringing some welcome relief to all those who'd been enduring its insistent heat until now.
>Flying up, Hexferry gets a glance at the contraption nearing completion in the distance.
>The overall shape is that of a rectangle, with two triangular braces rising up from the longer two sides. They're bridged together by a crossbeam over the middle.
>A length of wood in the center between them extends westwards and upward at an sharp angle.
>The faint glint of a metal pulley affixed to the near, western side can be seen in the remains of the direct light as lampmoth threads a rope through it, then looping it over the medial, rising plank and beginning to knot the loop.

>"*SQUEAK!*" Squeak voices a greeting to Hexferry from afar.
>The dark mare has nowhere near the set of pipes that Squeak does, so couldn't hope to be heard unless she got nearer but...
>Carrying only the one glass, she's able to wave back in response before she dips downwards toward Sequin's workshop.
>As she makes her descent, she ponders what the contraption might be.
"A swingset for the foals maybe? A weird seesaw of some kind? Maybe a leanto?"
>She shakes her head. Nothing quite fits.
>Hexferry opens the door to Sequin's, who seems to visibly relax upon seeing the vessel of pink liquid and shaved ice in Hexferry's forehoof.
>Putting her current work down, she flits over.
>"You are. The best."
>The blueish moth takes the glass firmly in one hoof and promptly has a sip.
>"Mmmf." She grunts briefly in approval and makes an "ok hoof" with her other forelimb as she does this.
>It's the pony version of a gesture Anon often does when he's being a jerk.
>In this case, though, Sequin's appreciation is genuine, and not intended to tick anyone off.
>Hexferry smiles.
"Rough day?"
>"Oh... it's getting better." The two mares exchange a brief look as she says this. Something more akin to the usual glint in Sequin's eye seems to return.
>By the tone of the voice, Hexferry groks she's asked the right thing, and suddenly feels a bit mushy inside, but in a good way...
>Even after making friends with Shimmer, she had worried that as time went on, and many of the older moths of the village became less active, her skillset as a decorator would not stack up to that of everyone else's in the give-and-take economy of the plaza-area; it's not the most-oft-called-upon talent by any stretch in a place with such little new construction.
>>
>>30268879
>Given lack of demand, she'd been considering moving to the commerce-town farther north at the fork, or perhaps leaving for Treble.
>However, this would be hard on her heart knowing that Shimmer Light would be likely to stay, in favor of the quiet remoteness of Hexferry's home village.
>Caramel and Goldie also showed no signs of wanting to relocate.
>Sequin's appreciativeness now and Dawn's pleasant air of collaboration earlier, both make her think that perhaps – just perhaps – there's a way she can remain here without being stuck enduring vastly unpleasant work in the meanttime.
>Though surely this chance is not written stone, the thought that it exists at all is a comfort.
>Hexferry gives a bit of a sigh, not quite sure how to put her next question.
"So, I don't imagine that's the whole reason you had Dawn send me here, was it?" Hexferry says, gesturing to Sequin's drink.
>She smiles and shakes her head as she finishes another sip.
>"No. I've made you a copy of the list Meisa and I put together of things that we'll need from the caravan which I'll give you. The other thing she wants is an account of how much fabric we've spun." {I'm proud that I was able to dangle so many participles there in her first sentence and still have it make sense. Go colloquial speech.}
"Oh?"
>"It's really hard to weigh before it's treated, so a lot of times we just process it all and then wait 'til the end for that part. I would've done it sooner, but if the number of finished garments bought last time are anything to go by, I wanted to have enough ready." {More questionable grammar. Yay.}
>Hexferry still isn't clear on why she was wanted. She remains silent, fearing she'll be forced to say or ask something dumb in a moment.
>Sequin picks up on her blank look.
>Thirty minutes ago, she might have shouted at Hexferry for showing such ignorance of her craft, and moreover of a rather important source of barter-revenue for the village.
>>
>>30268922
>But with the ethanol now in her system, and the promptness with which it was not only /fetched/, but also properly prepared, doing this no longer seems like the right course of action.
>Receiving no response for a moment, the Royal Flutterer pivots.
>"Here, lemme show you."
>Walking a few paces left past her work-table, she opens a door, revealing tall bolt upon bolt of variously-colored fabrics stored upright, placed evenly against the walls of the dimly-lit closet.
"Wow."
>Hexferry looks on in amazement;
>Even in the poor light, it's clear there's a true panoply to behold...
>She had no idea the village was capable of producing so much, and in such an array of different styles and patterns. Until now, she had thought that much of what Meisa and Sequin used was imported from elsewhere...
>Apparently, she'd been wrong.
>Gently, she strokes a hoof down the length of one of the rolls of material.
>It feels like silk.
"You... made this?"
>"It's been a good season for finding silktents in the forest. It's these early rains we've been getting, though some of the nagglebushes that Waspy and Virgo planted are probably old enough to attract more adults... yeah. It's went really well. {sic.} Lampmoth even made extra spools."
>Hexferry almost feels bad for knowing so little about something this fascinating.
"What can I do?"
>"They're heavy." Another jingle of crushed ice against the walls of the glass signals the mare has drained her mimosa down past the halfway point. A hint of the gravel on her voice from before has peaked back.
>She continues, "Grand Moth Tarkin has a large scales he stores at the lodge. We need to go set it up and then carry the bolts out to it."

She was intended to be a... Silver "y" (I assume it meant Silver Gamma) which straight-up had a silver y on each wing. Otherwise just brown and generally uninteresting looking moths. Either solely European, or just mainly European, they attack fields in massive numbers in seasons of food existing, then die hard when the cold comes. The facts of her being so common, so weak and such a parasite were initially reasons for her being so cold.
But then someone suggested White Spring and they were cute, so now she's that instead.

I thought about making another moth, having her be a Silver "y", but then I'd have to try juggling not-writing for two moths instead of just one.
I need to write more.

"I think it's about to rain though, Sequin. Is it really okay for some of these to get wet?"
>The mare smirks.
>"We can wrap them in oilskin and tare it ahead. Meisa told me about how they did that the very first scheduled caravan that came through. It was raining the ocean, but so many moths were talking cutlery up at the fork, the traders wanted to have every scrap they could get. Oh, pardon the pun. Anyhow, they weighed a bunch day-of right in the storm."
>Sequin happily drains the rest of her glass.
>"Are you ready?"
>Hexferry nods.
>The two mares depart for the lodge carrying the first bolt of fabric between them, with an oilskin tarp draped over the top in case of a sudden downpour. Sequin takes the lead with one end of the bolt, flying backwards, while Hexferry brings up the rear, holding onto her own side of its spool.
>As they move through the plaza, Hexferry can't help but crane her neck to see what's happened next with the contraption.
>A number of sandbags have been placed on the frame as if to anchor it down, and much of the equipment that had been out has been cleared away; only a bucket of nails and a few hammers remain; presumably the rest has been brought back inside.
>The builders are nowhere to be seen.
>Reaching the lodge, the pair sets down the spool.
>Swiftly, Sequin opens the west door, through which Hexferry has never been.
>She's beckoned to follow.
>Apparently, it's a shed of sorts, built into the side of the structure.
>It's quite spacious, which explains the crampedness of the lobby that lies beyond the east wall.
>Various mostly-large items are scattered about – festival streamers and other decorations, large cloth banners, the wooden signs of shops which must have long closed, and some other odds and ends such as empty barrels, urns, and sacks of seeds.

>"Can you get the other one?"
>Looking around, Hexferry spots the sister to the part of the scales Sequin has.
"Boy, this IS big."
>The other mare nods a with a silly 'I told you so' expression to her features.
>Outside, after untangling the chains which bind the two pieces together, it becomes clear what the hollow cross of metal at the midpoint exists for;
>Sequin flutters up and slides it onto a protruding iron peg which juts out from between the tarred logs a ways above the door.
>The hawkmoth had forever wondered why it was there, and now had her answer – it's the stable pivot for the old scales.
>Both of the scoops now hang side-by-side at about chest-level, bobbing gently in the diffuse light from the now-cloudy sky.
/Okay, what's next?/ Hexferry wonders.
>Sequin responds before anything is actually asked;
>"We need some pebbles."
"Pebbles?"
>Back in the shed, there are several thick baskets of river-rocks, all similar in size. With some effort, the mares haul one out.
>Glancing at the sky, Sequin wads the tarp into one of the hanging scoops and begins placing stones into the other until they come even, then tallying them quickly.
>"*SQUEAK!*"
"GAAH!" A startled Hexferry nearly falls over.
>Squeak, apparently, has been watching the process for a few moments now, though only making herself known presently.
"SQUEAK, IT IS NOT OKAY TO DO THAT!"
>"...*Squeak.*" comes her docile apology.
>Hexferry takes a breath.
>Before resuming her usual volume, the brown moth takes a few paces back so her voice is a bit less deafening.
>"...*SQUEAK?*"
>Sequin replies, "Well, I don't like to think about it much, but they want the weight along with the area because sometimes these bolts wind up as supper instead of the next coolest fashion. So it goes. Oh and this also gives us a density, which some designers really want, including Meisa; she holds some back according to how heavy or light they are."
>>
>>30276114
>As she says this, the hawkmoth lends her a hoof in placing the first bolt of fabric back into the tarp and covering it over.
>The two begin to stack the little stones against the added weight, which in the interim has brought one side to the ground.
>Over the gentle clangs and clacks of rocks being placed into the metal trough of the scales, Sequin offers:
>"Did you know that these stones are older than Tarkin himself?"
>"*SQUEAK.*"
>Sequin giggles.
>"Well, yeah. They're rocks, after all! But I meant that these belonged to Tarkin's village before he was even foaled. They used to use them to measure grain and other supplies before the troubles started. They hardly needed them after that, but Tarkin swore they'd be put to work elsewhere. When he made his travel group, he took these with him. They were all gathered from the streams near his village. Each one of them has the same weight, so you can just count them up without remembering which specific ones you used."
"Wait, really?"
>Hexferry was surprised;
>The process of finding this many stones with equal mass must've been painstaking; collecting quite this number probably took years of effort;
>It's no wonder Tarkin was willing to take these when he left, despite their weight and the bulk of the baskets.
>...Of course, it never occurs to her that there might have been so few supplies available that taking extras like the stones had simply not caused a dilemma for space or capacity.
>Fortunately, Hexferry doesn't have the direct experience to readily imagine such bleak times.
>...
>As the scales start to balance, Squeak changes the subject.
>"*SQUEAK?*"
"Oh. I guess you *would* know, wouldn't you? So, Squeak? What is it!?"
>"*SQUEAK.*"
"A c-catapult?! Th-th-that's ridiculous! Come on Squeak! What is it really? You probably don't know, do you?"

Definitely there are different types, though the differences between individual moths are sometimes finer than they might be between major groups like pegasi, myrmares, earthponies, unicorns, etc.

Pepper Dust is a good, obvious example. Not all drawings of him show it, but he actually has six legs instead of 4, presumably making him heavier and stronger than other moths, though perhaps worse at climbing walls/ceilings.

Some mothponies require their food to be mostly liquid (e.g. Shimmer Light) whereas others can eat things that are more solid.

It's been thrown around a bit by the thread that some babies actually look more caterpillar/grub-like in appearance whereas others resemble equines right away. >>30210856 features a period of pupation occurring before adulthood but this may or may not happen for all species. It has been the general consensus that foals only gain wings later. I'd think that viviparousness is also something that can vary across species.

Diurnality is definitely a difference between species of moths that's well established in the thread. Whereas most prefer night time, a few of the thread moths are better suited for waking during the day. Some might even split their most active hours evenly between dawn and dusk (the term for this is 'crepuscular').

It didn't get mentioned in the perk list earlier in this thread, and hasn't gotten a lot of discussion from what I know, but some moths IRL are naturally poisonous to predators, which is something that might repel monsters who'd otherwise take more than just a nibble.

Coremata like those that Mora (>>30219058) has would be another option not common to all moth pony species. Though making these extra appendages absurdly strong might be a little too /hentai/... I presume that they might at least be used to grab items or hold/fire extra weapons while running or flying. Though I get the impression this isn't the case for Mora, real moths can be retract these, making them hidden while not in use. That'd be your call if you implemented.

There's a couple other morphological differences which might be more cosmetic, but could still affect things such as trust or first impressions in your story if some characters haven't seen mothponies before. ("SHIT IT'S A FUCKING MUTANT.") This includes the aforementioned coremata, compound eyes, dark or light sclera, the hexagonal-eye trait, and also the spooky mouth that's a feature Little Light (see pic) and a couple other moths that have been drawn in the thread but aren't on the wiki... that one could actually have some niche uses allowing a moth to hold onto stuff and reduce spillage while sucking/drinking, though a situation like that might be rather specific. All renderings I've seen suggest the spooky mouth wouldn't be evident MOST of the time, only when a moth is feeding on certain things, startled, or wishing to give somepony a fright.

Finally, we haven't touched it in the thread since bat thread already deals excessively with hematophagy, but some real species of moths actually drink blood, and have a special proboscis to pierce skin for this purpose.

Remaining traits like phototaxis and photophobia/photosensitivity are also variable. I guess you might have nocturnal moths more sensitive to flashbangs or such, or you could even have them take handicaps during the day (but that assumes the sun ever comes out). Anyways, those traits might be played more like more personality quirks or preferences than actual play mechanics, though they'd work either way.

Down to little nitpicky stuff here...

If your game is super technical, better/worse performance in warm/cold conditions might also vary by species and amount-of-fluff, though this could probably be offset by equipment in most cases.

Pigmentation is also something that might affect a moth's ability to succeed in the wasteland depending on how drab their colors are, since the mating or warning patterns of certain moth species (especially on the wings) might serve to attract unwanted attention from enemy factions or the twisted monsters of the wastes (the ones that have eyes, anyhow). A simple cloak would solve this problem but it would still be in issue during flight or if the cloak were to be lost or stolen. If the NPCs in your story are particularly vicious, they might simply want to take brightly-colored wings as a trinket. For smaller moths taking cover, this potential handicap might be awash since they could hunker behind objects better, but this assumes they know where enemies are and have things to hide behind, though again this might only matter if wings are uncovered.

Conversely, certain other colors/patterns might serve as camouflage, barring access to/usage of other gear, and depending on terrain something made famous by the case of the Peppered Moth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppered_moth_evolution

The above points might or might not come into play if you need extra perks/flaws for moth-characters, and probably wouldn't matter much outside of extenuating circumstances, but of course, that's what FoE is really all about, so they might be worth the nickle.

From what I've read about coremata, it seems they're sensory organs and we would expect them to be sensitive. How about giving it higher perception or rather charisma because of the pheromone role?
>>
>>30279890
I think that would work, but that type of moth pony should only be able to secrete those pheromones once or twice per session.
>>
>>30279890
>sensory organs
Because lewd, Mora can presumably use them to do more than just signal and sense but however you want to set it up.

IMO it wouldn't be stretch to have moths who have coremata be able to physically manipulate objects with them, since pegasi can do the wing-hand thing, and some earthponies (ponk and treekick) seem to be able to use their manes/tails to do things that don't work in reality.
>>
>>30280125
There's a perk called "Tail Trick" in the game that allows you to use your character's tail as a prehensile limb to grab and hold light objects. Not sure if it can be used to fire and extra gun or stab more.
>>
>>30279989
How about one trait to share perception and charisma but one would have to decide whether to use one of the two?
>>30280125
I have no idea. They seemed more like hairy butts in moths rather than those weird tentacle things you find in other insects.

I guess since you're homebrewing anyhow you might add a "Tail Trickier" (which requires Tail Trick as a prereq) which would allow that sort of thing for combat purposes. You could make them compatible with the tendril-y coremata. (Not sure if you'll even offer the globe-shape.)

>>30280316
>globe-shaped coremata a gross
If it makes you feel any better, MOST moths have specially-adapted "scales" on or near the base of their wings. A typical moth uses these + wing-fluttering to spread the pheromone-y dust, rather than the weirdly-shaped sorta inflatable coremata structures.
>>
>>30280405
I'll have coremata moths start out with Tail Trick, that's a good idea.
>>
>>30280441
Have you thought about about a climbing-walls perk?
>>
>>30280550
I think that should be a trait for all moth ponies that don't have six legs. I'll add it.

Idea! The coremata have evolved into tail analogies. Moth pony tails ARE their coremata but only few species and/oder individuals retain the perception r/and pheromone ability. Compare it to Pinkie's tail wiggle sense.
>>
>>30281686
That could work but I kinda like the idea I already had for Dust Valley after the war... would this work?

Moths live in Dust Valley which is far southeast of the Badlands. To reach Dust Valley, one must travel through the Hayseed Swamps. Dust Valley is mountainous, which saved it from taking any significant effect from the mega-spells, because of this the valley’s residents, plant life, and animal life have remained largely unaltered over the course of two hundred years, the moth ponies became a secluded sub-species of ponies, rarely venturing into the outside world unless they absolutely had to. It’s extremely unlikely that you’ll find a moth pony out in the wastes, but it is possible. Most moth pony characters that begin life in Dust Valley will have no knowledge of the outside world beyond stories they’ve heard from their parents and elders.

Verbose anon from before, here. This seems fine to me given the fact that you have other kingdoms that survive alright (through presumably they keep out Equestrian immigrants somehow)...

In the thread's regular, non-apocalyptic canon, mothponies establish caravan-routes which (within the most-recent generation or so) make it all the way into Equestria, bringing prosperity and more of a shared purpose to moth country.

In FoE-verse, the caravans might still reach throughout the territory moth ponies occupy, but with the danger and hardscrabble of the wastelands, they'd have little reason to even go past the swamps in the first place. You might assume that something nasty eventually takes up residence in the swamps such that few sane travelers would consider venturing through. And/or – as presumably done in Griffonstone and Yakyakistan – they might set up defenses of some kind to keep Equestrians in the wastelands, either by encouraging monsters to occupy the interceding swamp area (sorta like the opposite of what Fluttershy does taming/helping nature) or by posting patrols, building traps, or all of the above.

It should be "antennae" not "antennas".
I'd increase the pathfinder radius to 30 meters at least.
>final perk is being a moth-alicorn
Eeeh. I'd change it to "Saturniidae's chosen" and have the moth be able to work magic or miracles with their wing-dust and/or antennae instead. (Saturniidae is the sorta deity-type entity the moths pray to.)
