It's plateaued over recent years. Not close to death but defiantly not the golden years anymore. Unless we don't have another major spark in the fandom than we may gain less and less traction within the next 5 years. The thing about /mlp/ in 2017 is doomposting is at a high due to various reasons and mods won't take action due to them not really caring.

Personally I think the fandom has been at a very comfy point since 2015. No flamewars and for the most part we're left to our own devices whenever we tell others about our interests because since 2011-12 the internet world has found other things that are relevant to talk down on.

It's certainly far from complete death as some fandoms are yet it has declined in the past years. This board still gets lots of traction daily as well as sites all around so there are still a lot of people that are part of it. You'll always have trolls that say its dying or dead but it had gotten so large to the point where it would take a long time for it to truly die.

EQD isn't dying either, they're 'going' to die because of the big hiatus incoming.
EQD is a special case because it was used as a platform to get horsefamous. Now that all these persons got what they wanted, there's no point in having this site around.
Rather, it's only use should be to find and share news about the show/staff/maybe some related fandom stuff like cons and shit.
Of course nobody goes to EQD to get pictures anymore, or to get fic reviews. Music maybe?

Note that most of the following does not apply to /mlp/. /mlp/ is merely a minority subset of the fandom and thanks to its ties to 4chan, will always be the 'black sheep' if you will.
Anyway, we need to explore what the MLP fandom consists of. When it started, I like to think the fandom was made up of men in the 20s age range. But since then I believe it's expanded to teenagers as well.
When the fandom broke free of its fandom origins, there was a lot of hoo haa about the fact that its viewers were apparently 'breaking the mould' and 'throwing away gender stereotypes and boundaries'! Even though that's all bullshit. I don't know why that happened, perhaps as a justification for men watching a show for little girls (as if you needed one, what's entertainment is entertainment).
So for a couple of years, bronies were a big thing. They wouldn't fucking shut up about how good the show was (it's decent really, but not amazing) and how they were making big strides in society. Obviously, this obnoxiousness was met with significant backlash, a mix of people not understanding them and others just wanting them to shut the fuck up and go back to their caves.
Meanwhile, within the fandom itself, the messages of the show inspired a 'love and tolerate' attitude in its viewers. In some regards this was a good thing, for the fandom experienced an explosion in creativity and websites designed to foster such (EQD, Fimfiction, etc.). On the other hand, it also created a hugbox environment. Everyone had to be nice to each other, like the ponies were. The intolerance of the outside world combined with the hugbox nature of the fandom created the perfect environment for the socially awkward to find a place where they felt they belonged. MLP and the brony fandom was a safe place for them. It was perfect.

The show creators only encouraged this notion, for they took to the fandom surprisingly well. They even turned an animation error into a fully fledged background character: Derpy (or Muffins, whatever). Over time, they would appeal more to the fandom's desires. Lyra and Bon Bon started popping up together, Derpy had more roles than just background cameos and finally... Slice of Life. These appeals to the fandom only reinforced their notion that they were a good fandom, and that the show creators were the best for appealing to their tastes.
Then, on the Season Finale of Season 3, something happened that almost broke the fandom: Twilicorn.
See, for all the developments of the cast, the status quo of the show is something that's relatively stable. But Twilicorn changed everything (or so we thought, at the time). I won't go through all the complaints about her but suffice to say, the majority of the fandom wasn't just unhappy, they were panicking. What if their comfy slice of life was changing forever, for the worse?
Granted, this wasn't the first time Hasbro had meddled with the show. However the writers had handled it well enough before (see Canterlot Wedding). Still, everyone knew that Twilicorn was a decision made by the suits, not Faust herself. So when Season 4 rolled around and the episodes were surprisingly decent, people forgave the writers.They knew what they were doing. Everything was fine. Everything was safe, just a little different, that's all.

To cut a long story short, all of the above has created a fandom who cling to their show with a desperate fervour. It's their safe space. To criticise it might damage the show and the fandom entirely. The fandom is certainly declining slowly (it reached its peak years ago), which only exaggerates the desire to hold onto what's left. Most bronies won't challenge the show or rock the boat too much; they're just here for simple escapism and the happy cute ponies. Nothing more.

Proof is Twilicorn. The show was supposed to end, that was the plan.
Hasbro didn't want a fourth season because the numbers were there, shows lasting longer than three seasons gets less and less ratings and good bye money. But DHX somehow convinced them to keep going. I'm sure EQG has something to do with that too. 'Let us make a fourth season and this EQG barbie prototype and see what happens?'
And EQG worked, and fourth season worked.

But if it all came to hasbro, the show would've ended with Twilicorn. That's why it happened, and that's proof they didn't give a fuck about the fandom.

And I don't really care about the other points really, I mean, it's a fandom. They're all hugboxes for people, a way or another.
There were the early fandoms like capeshits and then later sci-fi, that were for nerds, for people that 'weren't understood' and what not.
I don't see one kind of 'fandom' that isn't a hugbox, really.
